[ evil laugh ] only on "gma." ? i'm very impressed, michael. you got that. >> wow. oh -- all right. we got it. good morning, america. happy halloween. and take a look at our times square audience. so many little ones getting in the spirit. everyone so excited. adorable. >> they are ready. >> yeah. we're all excited. we have some major surprises coming up for everybody out there. because there's so much going on behind the scenes. i don't even know what's coming up. >> a lot of fun coming up. i hope lara looks a little scary. that is all coming up. first, the fbi bombshell. they are now searching through thousands of e-mails connected to hillary clinton aide, huma abedin. and the fbi director under fire for making this public so close to an election. dozens criticizing him in a new letter. veterans are criticizing him. all of this could shake up a close race for the white house. the new poll shows the candidates one point apart. team coverage this morning starting with pierre thomas in washington. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, george. the fbi director is in the midst searing attack, now under intense pressure to say whether this new batch of e-mails potentially connected to clinton are significant or not. this morning, armed with a court order, fbi agents are set to begin an intensive effort to go through thousands of e-mails which sources say are connected to huma abedin, one of hillary clinton's closest confidants. sources familiar with the case tell abc news, these e-mails were discovered while the fbi estranged husband, anthony weiner. in connection with a sexting scandal, allegedly involving in minor. the fbi wants to know if the e-mails contain classified information and if they're connected to secretary clinton's private server. fbi director comey's disclosure congress that he was re-igniting the probe has formed a barrage of attacks unleashed by democrats took aim. >> in july, the director said no reasonable prosecutor would move forward. and there's nothing that we have been shown, nothing the director has said to alter that conclusion. >> reporter: senate minority leader harry reid issued a blistering attack. questioning comey's integrity. writing he regretted working to get comey confirmed. because i believed you to be a principled public servant. with deepest regret, i now see that i was wrong. last night, abc news obtained a letter penned by former attorney general eric holder and dozens of other former prosecutors and high-ranking officials, including republicans, criticizing comey. many of us have worked with director comey. all of us resp but his unprecedented decision to publicly comment on evidence in what may be an ongoing inquiry 11 days before the presidential election leaves us astonished and perplexed. republicans were quit to defend comey. >> we both encouraged him to make sure they had as much information as possible to make development that the bureau is taking the correct steps. >> reporter: in the clinton case, comey has worked with unprecedented measures. he held a press conference on why he was not pressing charges, although he was pressing her actions. >> there is evidence that they were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive highly classified information. >> reporter: justice department officials had advised against alerting congress, citing the department tradition of not talking about ongoing investigations, and not doing anything that would be seen as influencing an election in its final days. >> and pierre, one of the other things we're learning is they knew about these e-mails several weeks before they briefed the fbi director. >> reporter: george, a source tells me there was a lot of back and forth among agents about how to best proceed. the agents on the weiner sexting scandal are different from those that work on the clinton server issue. they said it was complicated involved, so much remains to be seen. >> let's bring in dan abrams now. you heard what they said, and they say they're astonished and perplexed because justice guidelines say you don't comment on investigations, or this close to an election. >> you have to look at what happened in july. where he holds the press conference. that was in july. that was controversial in and of itself. once he talks to congress about the details of the investigation, you can argue that he's stuck between a rock and hard place now. the problem was the execution. the fact that he didn't provide any information. that they may not have seen, it seems any or most of the e-mails that they were talking about. then james comey then tried to backtrack a little bit, makes an internal comment in a letter to all of the fbi, trying to provide a little more context. bottom line, this is why federal and local authorities often say, we can't comment on an ongoing investigation. why? because it leads people to start >> and because of that vacuum, he's under pressure to put out more information closer to an election as they go through the e-mails. >> i don't expect he'll do that. i don't expect we'll hear anything else from james comey. but let's also point out, it is very unlikely this is going to lead to any kind of criminal indictment. they are looking at these new e-mails. they are not revisiting the old investigation. they're not looking back and saying, did we get it right the first time? this is just a question of, is there something new that will surpass that very high legal standard which is intentional mishandling of classified information. obstruction of justice. >> it's easy to run computer programs to show whether or not these e-mails are duplicates of what the fbi already has. if they can determine that quickly, wouldn't he be obligated to put that out? >> yes. i would expect him to say something if those are e-mails they have already seen. if they have to go through all of these, i don't expect we'll hear anything. >> okay. dan abrams. thanks very much. all right, now, with just eight days to go, hillary clinton and her team are fighting back. she and her campaign are calling this unfair treatment. cecilia vega is with the clinton campaign in westchester, new york. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: good morning to you. they sure are fighting back. i was on this plane behind me when they learned about this political bombshell. the clinton team was completely shell shocked. this is the october surprise one saw coming. hillary clinton on a swing through florida this weekend, but noticeably absent, her closest aide, huma abedin. rallying supporters, clinton tried to move past that political bombshell. >> there's a lot of noise and distraction, but it really comes down to what kind of future we want. >> reporter: her campaign had been riding high about the state of the race. instead this morning, team clinton is rocked by her e-mails once again. >> some of you may have heard director sent out yesterday. about her opponent, donald trump. she is really trying to focus on her closing arguments and move past these e-mails. robin? now to the republicans and donald trump's response to the new fbi revelations. his campaign doubling down on its effort tot paint clinton as corrupt. they take a fresh look at blue-leaning states. abc's tom llamas is here with more on their strategy. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning to you. the trump campaign feels they now have an opening in some of those states. they hit new mexico yesterday. michigan today. and though they're not as organized, or major outside event. is this fbi announcement big enough to change the trajectory? >> as we talked last week, i thought it was around a five or six-point race, but for a major political meteor. well, victory, which was two or three. no telling where this ends up in the next two or three days. >> sounds like you're saying absent new information, clinton still on track to win. >> i think right now, suspect on the run for days accused of killing two family members, shooting police officers, live-streaming his escape. well, he is now dead after a shootout with police overnight. abc's steve osunsami has the dramatic details. >> reporter: he was running from the law for a week. but the long arm of authorities caught up with 38-year-old michael vance late sunday night the 38-year-old refused to give up and died in a shootout with police about 130 miles northwest of oklahoma city. police had been searching for him since october 23rd. he was accused first of shooting two police officers, and then car-jacking a couple as he fled. he shot another woman in the thigh, and then drove eight miles to a home where police say he brutally killed two famy what frustrated police more was when he went to social media to brag about the story. >> let me tell you, it hurts. >> reporter: he live-streamed his getaway. >> wow, that really hurt, see, i'm bleeding where the police shot me. >> reporter: authorities caught up with vance sunday morning when police spotted him leaving a campsite. a county sheriff pulled him over at 9:30 p.m. they traded bullets. vance escaped that shootout but was cornered by the oklahoma highway patrol 45 minutes later, end. multiple agencies responded. one officer was shot in the shoulder. we're told his injury are not life-threatening and he is being flight about to take off from ft. lauderdale was evacuated because of a bomb scare. a passenger on the spirit airlines flight reportedly saw text messages on the two other. s -- passengers on bombs. there, sunday's 6.6 magnitude quake is the strongest to hit italy in decades. and officials say this man climbed into the panda enclosure at a zoo in china all to impress some women. the panda began (baby laughs) you're confusing me with your countdown. time for the big board. team of insiders standing live with more on today's top stories. sunny hostin right here at the table. we'll get to you in a minute. we begin with the dramatic american airlines fire on friday on the tarmac in chicago. aborted on takeoff, and now the ntsb is investigating, revealing blaze. want to talk to david kerley about this. we see the video from hector, a passenger on the plane. showing just how chaotic it was in those few moments as the takeoff was aborted. what have we learned since then about what caused all this? >> they actually saw the fire and the flames outside, and the smoke. they wanted to get out of there. what happened is that 767 is on the runway. it's getting ready to take off. throttled up. the pilot hears a bump. turning out, it was the right you're compressing the air to explode it with fuel. and what happened was that the engine let go. a part in the compression section blew up. it's called an uncontained failure. parts hit everywhere. one part hit 3,000 feet away, another hangar. and so with the fire and the flames, everybody's coming out. it's that compression part that actually was the problem. the question actually is -- the good news i would say is look that wing has a fuel tank in it. that's where the fire and flames came after the engine blew. everybody got out. that's the good news. you have an in general failure, everybody got out without injuries. >> that was powerful. 3,000 feet away? >> it was. the engine is built if you have a failure like that, most of the parts are supposed to stay inside. an uncontained failure, they fly everywhere. it's the worst kind of engine failure you can have on the ground. >> very fortunate no one was hurt. as the investigation continues to go forward, what will the ntsb being looking at and are there worries about other planes with this engine having the same problem in the future? >> yeah, it's not just american airlines that's worried about this. this is a error by about the entire fleet, and the question is, is there something wrong with that part that failed in that specific engine? that's what they want to know. if that's the case, it will be a change on all the engines on all the aircraft. >> that's something we have to keep our eye on. thank you, david. a new report is questioning the dna evidence that exonerated the ramsey family in 2008. sunny is here. what can you tell us?
