hearing two off-duty oakland firefighters were shot here outside of the gordon biersch brewery in japan town. one was killed. the crime investigations unit is still here. this happened at 9:30, and they are still here some six hours or so after this all happened here in downtown san jose. still a lot of unanswered questions. police need to know what led up to this incident here in japan town. police say the victims were attending a weekly music festival. not the restaurant but the brewery. and for some unknown reason investigators say they were shot across the street from the brewery. police detained one person after a short pursuit. they are canvassing the area at this hour to make sure there are no more suspects that may have been involved in this incident. sources tell me the firefighters were young, fresh out of the academy. this morning still few answers as to what led to the shooting. >> the details are still pretty sketchy. we don't know what led up to this altercation if there was an altercation. it appears to be a random act. we don't have a lot of details at this point. we have a lot of neighbors calling in about somebody running through the neighborhood, and we were able to detain an adult male in the vicinity so we're still investigating to see what his role is. >> reporter: and i'm told from sources that firefighters were with a larger group here with the suspect. the weekly festival. one of them off-duty was killed here in downtown san jose. we're being told by some of the responding officers they're surprised this happened in japan town, usually a very quiet, peaceful area. not last night. i'm damian trujillo. now to "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live at valley medical center. kris? >> reporter: hi there, marcus and laura. a huge tragedy for the oakland police department, but law enforcement and fire protection are a close knit group. we have seen a number of fire vehicles and police vehicles here at valley medical center where we are this morning. we know they arrived here in a mass group this morning as they were making their way here to find some comfort in being together after those two oakland firefighters were shot off-duty. as damian reported the firefighter here has very serious injuries and his fellow firefighter did not make it after the shooting last night. a san jose police officer told me that he wouldn't expect that any of the oakland firefighters were here right now would have anything to say this morning, but if that changes, we will certainly give them the opportunity. if they want the space, we will second attack that occurred in cambrils after the barcelona van attack. this is a look we saw briefly of the growing memorial. the total number of people killed now stands at 14. this is what the famed las ramblas looks like. cafes and shops are reopening. they say terrorists will not stop them from living. >> this as the manhunt for the driver who rammed his van in the barcelona streets is still going on. three suspects arrested. five other suspects were killed by police in cambrils after they drove a van into a small group of people there. 14 people have now died in both attacks and more than 100 are injured. isis is saying that its soldiers are behind this killing, but they have not provided any evidence. a bay area woman is in a desperate search to find her husband. the two became separated during all that chaos in barcelona. >> she and her husband jerry tucker were shopping when she says he left to find a bathroom. she hasn't seen him since. we spoke to her last night on the phone. >> within seconds after that there was screaming and yelling and i ended up further and further away. >> and nunes says she's reaching out to the u.s. embassy and hospitals trying to get updated 24/7. good friday morning. as we start out with some mostly clear skies a live look outside at three of our micro climates in the south bay at 62 degrees. we're at 63 degrees now in the peninsula and 59 degrees in san francisco. the north bay at 56. some mostly clear skies. as we look at our high temperatures today, we'll be heading up to 90 degrees in livermore. concord up to 90. san francisco will keep temperatures in the 60s. we'll have some lower 80s in san jose. heading over to mike now, a traffic alert for the north bay. >> we have this video in the newsroom here. this is the result of a big rig fire that currently closed 680 southbound in solano county. you see them addressing a fire just off the roadway. there's a tractor-trailer -- the trailer itself has to continue to be offloaded and cleared from the roadway. southbound 680 blocked through solano county. let me show you where this is. north of the benicia bridge. we are looking at that drive as we come down through the area. a jam coming off 680 and 880 so you're okay heading through fairfield. we'll track this all morning. so far you're forced off and then back on to the freeway. we'll watch as the headquarters. wall street could see a few more red arrows at the opening bell. europe and asia are both lower today. stocks sold off yesterday on disappointing earnings and concerns about president trump's policy agenda. the dow had its worst session in three months and its second worst day of the year. look for consumer sentiment, the dow dropping 274 to 21, 750. the nasdaq down. facebook is testing a feature in the news feed to provide custom links to individual users. the company is seeking ways to increase the amount of time that you spend on the social media site. each selected item and the featured topic tool includes a few sentences of text on a subject, a link to a story and photo. facebook, twitter, snap chat and google all offer competing tools to find trending news. google expanded its youtube tv streaming service to 14 new markets to reach half of u.s. households. an additional 17 will launch in the coming weeks. youtube tv is partnering with sinclair and will air off-duty firefighters were shot in san jose's japan town. sadly one has died, another injured seriously at the hospital right now. we understand there are two recent academy graduates. police don't have a motive right now. they do have one person in custody right now. we have damian trujillo outside of the gordon biersch brewery in japan town. he is live on the scene there. kris is gathering any information she can from the hospital. it's 4:45 right now. this is still a few blocks outside of the main strip and there's a preschool so that's a few blocks away from the school. we're following. >> and a lot of police in the area as that investigation continues this morning. >> a lot of people are getting up this morning -- >> it's friday, getting ready to head out the door and the weekend. the same weather that we had yesterday continuing into today. a live look outside we do still have clouds overhead and temperatures right now in the mid-60s in san francisco. upper 50s to lower 60s elsewhere. it is a cool start. we are looking at high temperatures today in the south bay reaching 83 degrees. we can see the bottom of the screen we're going to head to the peak of the heat within the next couple of days and cooling down a few more degrees. it will still be hot in the tri-valley and the delta. antioch up to 92 degrees. oakland will be at 73 degrees there. the peninsula, san carlos, at 75 degrees for a high today. the mission district, 67. santa rosa, 85. warmer than yesterday. and in napa 82 degrees. if you're looking out the window let's get started with getting ready this morning. a great day to start out with a light jacket and then maybe a nice summer dress or something that will help keep you cool as temperatures heat up later today. if you're going to be heading to napa valley today it will start out with a few clouds. temperatures at 60 degrees and then we'll be at 77 degrees by noon. a pleasantly warm day. we're so excited to clear the shelters this weekend. we'll be out in berkeley with the ice cream truck. you can stop by and check out some of the pets if you're not really ready to make a decision, just go there and see some of the puppies and kittens. i'm sure you'll make a quick decision. we'll have some low 70s as we go through the day. beautiful weather in berkeley and also in san francisco we are going to have 50 shelters get off and then back on to the freeway. it's not a lot of reroute as far as mileage goes. this is a problem for folks traveling through the north bay and the benicia bridge. interstate 80 is just fine through fairfield, vallejo and into the crockett area. we'll track that as the morning continues to build. the rest of the day moves very well. no problems. no backup at the bay bridge toll strong-armed robberies reported on buses in the tenderloin, south, northern as well. in one case the woman was assaulted by a group who stole her phone. now we have a photo here. this man one of the suspects arrested in the case. 19-year-old clay dos from antioch along with three other minors were arrested. the crime rate is going up. last year for the second consecutive year violent crime numbers went up. according to federal data it went up more than 4% in 2016. more than 1,900 people killed. that's the most since 2009. violent crimes are still down more than 50% since the early 1990s. it is 4:49 right now. new this morning a third cal ballot has been filed, a movement calling for the golden state to secede from the rest of the country. they call for a constitutional convention, wants the u.s. congress to make changes to the constitution to allow a clear and reasonable path to, quote, complete independence. another initiative cleared to collect signatures ro crime investigations unit has left the scene. blocked off between 7th street in downtown san jose. across the street from the gordon biersch brewery, not the restaurant and bar but the brewery, in japan town. here is the information we have. police are not confirming or saying anything official about the profession of the victims but sources tell me they were, in fact, off-duty oakland firefighters.
