>> reporter: there are no signs behind us, we are joining you a block from where the shooting happened in this private neighborhood. police are still trying to determine motive. neighbors on the 2900 block heard gunshots about 9:50. police say since it was late, neighbors weren't outside, you didn't see a lot, except there was possibly a pickup involved in the shooting. >> had some neighbors call reporting they heard shots and female screaming in the area. more officers responded and we found a female and male victim with the same gunshot wounds. they were immediately transported to the hospital. the condition is not known at this time. >> reporter: police say the female was 29 and the male 28. they aren't sure of the relationship, husband and wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, but they were living together in the home. police say the suspects were all wearing all black. that's all they have to go on. if you have any information, call concord police department. sharon katsuda, today in the bay. >> thank you very much. developing overnight, a state of emergency has been declared in north carolina as protesters clash with police a second night in a row. arrests and riot gear. police decked out in riot gear, firing tear gas into a crowd blocking the interstate. the violence only escalated from there. one person is in critical condition after being shot by another protester. police are stressing the shooter was not a police officer. >> i don't know, they just shot somebody, he was laying there in front of the omni, there was blood and a crowd of people, i don't know if he's dead. >> four police officers were also injured in that melee. the charlotte community is reeling after a black police officer shot and killed a black man named keith lamont scott during an investigation at an apartment building. we will look at the damage left behind in a live report in the next hour. until then, go to nbcbayarea.com for continuing coverage. at home. students at san jose state are feeling uneasy. >> that's right. they discovered a swastika and hate filled graffiti in two separate dorm rooms. someone made one made of name tags. in the other case, a swastika and hate language were posted in a seven person suite at campus village. the incidents prompt calls from students for meetings. right now, we are gathering more information. and we will have a live report at the bottom of the hour. 4:35. a tragic accident in the sierra, nevada takes the life of a grad student. she was killed sunday while climbing. 26 years old. grad student from stanford school of medicine studying immunology. she was climbing near bear creek spira, lost her footing and fell more than 800 feet. it marks the second tragic accident to hit the bay university or the university in the bay area this week. monday, we reported the death of a san jose student who drowned in a lake east of fresno. still no answers as to what caused a scent that sent dozens to the hospital with breathing problems. this is the oil slick. undergoing see the coast guard was out in force, trying to clean the san pablo bay. that may be to blame for the scent. authorities are looking at the tanker, the one called namuna spirit docked in rodeo. it could be the source of the spill. >> we don't know. there are a lot of unknowns. this is one possible location. >> they can't say if there's behind the calls to 911 and dozens of visits to the emergency room in the area. vallejo issued a shelter in place that's now over. oakland police debut a new sub tags. but it is a whole lot more. only a few blocks from freed month high school. oakland police say it is a station for kids to do homework, work on computers alongside officers. opd says it is another way for officers to interact with the community. coming up, cool conditions to start your first day of fall. anthony, can you feel it the second you step out or what?
