Freezing temperatures may be to blame for this break. Those 35 homes wont have water until noon today. The 16 inch pipe that ruptured was built nearly 70 years ago. The Virgin America flight crew was preparing to land at jfk last night when a green laser beam hit the plane. The aircraft was flying at 6,000 feet, just four miles from the runway. He thanked people he had never met for something they did long before he was even born. Today in the bays Garvin Thomas has this mornings bay area proud. Thanksgiving day, 1944 is a big day in this familys history. Its a day richard zimm is thankful for 71 years later. You notice over in this corner here at the Infantry Museum in fort benning youll find a collection of world war ii era building. Richard came from walnut creek to soak up the history. Its not really buildings he came to see. Its men. These are the people who saved my fathers life. Herb zim was a member of a u division. When i would ask him for detail he would say i dont want to talk about it. I cant talk about it. In fact, about all richard could get out of his father before his death was that during the battle for the french city of metz he was trapped behind enemy lines for eight days before being rescued on thanksgiving day, 1944. It was all richard knew, until about a year ago when he began searching for more information about the battle. It was the start of a journey that eventually took him to eastern france. And with the help of a local woman, he searched for the very location of the most Pivotal Moment of his fathers life. As we were close to saying were not going to find it, i looked over and i saw this ruins, concrete ruin off in the distance. I tears coming down my face. It was the most spiritual moment of my life. Still, knowing the place and knowing the story, are not the same. Which is why richard has come to georgia for the 66th reunion of the 95th infantry. The iron men of metz. 15,000 served. Only 14 are here. Most of them as we know are gone. Whoever is here, i personally want to thank. They saved my fathers life. And richard made a point to talk with each of them. Until one night at dinner. He found just what he was looking for. Two who had indeed served with his father. We were cut off. One telling a very familiar tale. For eight days we had nothing. Dont let anybody out, its horrible. It may come this direction i dont know. She said get in, she was hollering at people to get in and dont go out to the parking lot. And there was a bunch of people in there after that. Everybody was looking at me and freaking out. Horrible thing to remember. I dont know what i looked like. But im sure it wasnt pleasant.
