>> 7:05 west coast time you've got more information. what is the latest? >> well, we've started to see a little weakening so it's a category 4 but don't be fooled. that does not mean this is not still a very dangerous storm. it is a monster. and in fact, the hurricane force winds right now from the center of this storm stretch out about 75 miles per hour and then the tropical force winds stretch out almost 190 miles from tip to tip. so we're watching this closely. it's latest location right now as we said, a category 4 storm with 150 miles per hour winds, 450 miles southeast of here. moving west knot west at 16 miles per hour. tonight it strikes the bahamas with winds from 75 to 80 miles per hour. 5 to 10 foot storm surge. then is paces cuba and makes its way toward florida. the sometime late saturday night into sunday morning 150 to 175 miles per hour winds. storm surge 7 to 10 feet. rainfall 8 to 16 inches. it continues up the spine of florida. sunday evening in central florida still with end withes between 75 and 100 miles per hour. that's a category 2 storm with a storm surge of 3-5 feet and then continues on into northern florida and the southeast. the this is going to be a one-two punch on both sides of the coast. the reason for that, the state of florida along the peninsula is about 150 miles wide. this storm, hurricane irma is about 650 miles wide. as it makes its way to the north, that storm surge is going to come into -- winds from the east and that will cause the storm surge in soet eastern florida upwards of 10 feet. then as it pulls away to the north, the winds shift around and we'll see a storm surge that's pretty strong along the west and southwest coast of florida and so you can see those storm surge warnings anywhere from five to ten feet. to give you an idea of ten feet, the bottom of those windows, that's ten feet up there. so the water will come in that high, guys. >> all right. thank you very much. we'll be back with you many times this morning. of course the problems tied to the evacuations in south florida r not limited to the roadways. take a look. thousands of people finding themselves stranded at the airports desperate for seats. and overnight, a police-involved shooting at miami's airport caused even more problems than delays. miguel almaguer is there. >>reporter: good morning. thousands are pouring into mia every hour. desperate looking for those last seats out. as you mentioned over night there was a shooting at the airport. that's raising tensions for so many who already are at a boiling point. the mass exodus from south florida turned violent as fun fire rang out at the airport. police say a man with a knife somehow got on to the tarmac. when confronted by officers he ran into a restricted area and tried to get on to the roof. an officer shot the suspect. passengers ordered to evacuate a termin terminal amid the chaos. >> nobody got hurt aside from the perpetrator. none of the workers downstairs or any passengers. >> reporter: a bizarre moment inten fiing the anxiety at the airport where a different kind of storm has already made land fall, thousands of flights canceled before the arrival. >> i had lshd paid $100 for a round trip ticket they canceled and trying to ask me to pay another $900 for one way. >> reporter: massive crowded airport is not a shelter. across the southern end of the state, major airlines suspended service. >> im egetting anxious right now. i have a family to go back to. the so i'm just really worried right now. >>reporter: making matters worse, there's trouble at sea. the two busiest cruise ports in the world affected by the incoming storm. some 40,000 passengers impacted by irma. many now shipped back to miami with nowhere to go. >> i think this is unprecedented. i've been here 60 years. and i've never heard of this kind of evacuation. maybe it should have been dropped off somewhere else. >> reporter: this morning tens of thousands are filling irma's wrath. some cruise ships headed out to sea while others are returning to port, a massive storm wreaking havoc from out at sea to back on land. >> just kind of anxious and worried about if you're going to get home or stuck somewhere. >> reporter: some 4600 flights have already been canceled so many of desperate to find their way out. patience are getting short and lines are getting longer. back to you guys. >> thank you very much. >> we are joined now by phillip levine, the mayor of miami beach. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> you have not minced words.yom a nuclear hurricane. and i know evacuations are your number one priority right now. how is that going? is the city essentially empty? >> it's going very, very well. i think i described it as a knew clear hurricane because of its devastating effect on the islands on its way towards florida. the evacuation has gone very well. as of yesterday, i'll see the streets of prooem h. miami beach quiet. empty, completely empty. now of course we're going to continue today. we need everybody who's watching or listening to know we don't want heros, we want safe residents. they should leave here if they have not left already? miami beach is a great city. you know that. you're also the home of a lot of senior citizens. did that population pose any specific challenges in terms of getting those people to safer ground? >> we're very close. we know our seniors lif. also have a homeless population as well as special needs. we took early steps to make sure we identified all our seniors and make sure they have the ability to evacuate the island. we have buses, we have trolleys, shelters in the mainland for them to go. the and that's gone very well so far. >> you must have a to-do list that is pages and pages long. setting evacuations aside because i know that's number one, what are the other concern the you have now. >> i think the two primary concerns number one people heed the warning and of court the potential devastating effects from the storm. the sea water, huge storm water surge big concern that we have. and number 2 the devastating potential effects of the wind. we've done everything we could do to this point, puts in portable pumps, generators, already raised roads, but it's no match for a hurricane, let alone a hurricane of this historical magnitude. >> when you talk about history, 1926, the great miami hurricane, that's the last time miami beach took a direct hit. the "new york times," i don't know if you saw this. the they did a comparison of what the ocean front area looked like then versus now and tried to calculate what the damage to be from a storm like this. do you even have numbers in your mind? >> we don't have actually have real numbers but we understand it's very serious hurricane. the number one priority are the lives and safety of the people here. we'll deal with the fiscal destruction post hurricane. >> all right. the miami beach mayor. we know it's a busy morning. >> we're pulling for you, mr. mayor. >> thank you very much. >> regardless of where it hit, south florida is going to face high winds, dillylan has more. >> the storm surge can be one of the most dangerous. rapid rise in water levels. sometimes several feet in just a few minutes. it's all caused by the push of that water on shore as the hurricane moves other the ocean. imagine taking a squeegee and dragging the top layer of the ocean on shore. they can flood at high tide on a sunny day. the forecast of about five to ten feet that will inundate parts of miami and cause potentially devastating flooding. and the winds, the high rises in the miami area. so winds change speed with height. so for example 100 miles per hour winds at the surface translates to 130 miles per hour at the top of a high-rise. the windows in these newer buildings after hurricane andrew are designed to with stand 175 miles per hour winds but you have to keep the windows shut as the winds rush down the billing they create that intense vacuum effect that can suck things out. if they are not shut properly can can cause significant damage inside. also, speaking of winds, there are more than two dozen cranes scattered around miami. the cranes' counter balances can weigh up to 30,000 pounds so they did not have time to remove them before the hurricane's arrival. people that live near those cranes are being urged to evacuate because they're ekt p etded to just spin. they're going to let them loose and spin in the storm. there's no saying just how long they can spin for. irma is different than harvey because the storm surge and winds will be a much bigger threat than the days of flooding lain h. rain we saw with harvey. >> remember hurricane sandy. the crane came tumbling down and dangled. we had to evacuate the streets below. we know the dangers that cranes can pose. >> there was a miami construction official that said if you live next to a crane i can't tell you it's safe to be in a building nearby. a lot more on this storm. now we want to move this to this breaki breaking news. mexico's most powerful earth quake in a century. it sparked a tsunami warning and this morning deaths they don't have to leave the area, but they need to get out of the storm surge areas. but those high-rises and construction, we're going to see a tremendous amount of damage based upon this forecasted track. >> craig, will you explain to us right now, what's going on with fema? take us into the war room. describe what the operations are like right now. >> they're moving and trying to prestage everything they can to get ready for the initial response back end, supporting florida governor scott and the team here in florida, the florida national guard and first responders. but the challenge is going to be florida's peninsula. so as much as people are having trouble going north, it's going to be just about as difficult heading south. particularly as damage starts in the southern part of the state. but that forecast track has a hurricane going right up the middle of the state. so those highways are going to have a hurricane on it before you can even get to the people that are being hit by the storm in the beginning. so prestaging, getting things set. but the other thing they're having to factor in is how much is this storm going to slow down or prevent immediate response based upon where it's at on these highways. >> and craig, we look at this, and we can't help but think about fema and how stretched thin it must be. there are wildfires out west. there's obviously the hurricane harvey recovery efforts. and now this. you're a veteran of those enjoyable washington funding battles. does fema have enough money? would you be worried if you were in your old job? >> well, the congress gets the supplemental. that gives the cash for the immediate response. obviously, we're going to need more money or fema is going to need more money for harvey. now with irma, congress will have to take some hard looks at how we fund disasters, reauthorization of national flood insurance program. and make sure that when we rebuild, we're not just building it back the way it was. we have got to build the future risk. i'm tired of people debating climate change. it ain't about climate change any more. it's about climate adaptation. we have to build for our future risk, our past is not the best indicator of what these risks have been. we have seen it time and time again. we build it back, it gets destroyed. we have got to do better this time. >> craig, your insight is valuable. thank you very much for your time this morning. we appreciate it. >> thank you. let's go back to al. he's got the national forecast and also the latest on irma. he's on miami beach this morning. al, people come down here. but, boy, i've got to tell you, it is rough. it is going to be a rough change, and a big change along that horizon. all right, let's look at the comparison of andrew to irma. and it is kind of interesting. category 5 storm andrew back in august, 165-mile-an-hour maximum winds. the radius for this was 45 miles from the 74-plus-mile-an-hour winds. the time over florida, four hours. now contrast that with irma. and as craig fugate mentioned, the track of this comes straight up the spine of florida. and so the time over florida could be 24 hours or more. maximum winds so far have been 185-mile-an-hour. the storm diameter, a third larger than it was for andrew. so right now irma, category 4 storm, but it could intensify again. we could be seeing reintensification of
