Including fallout from the clashes with White Nationalists and protesters in charlottesville, virginia. A suspect accused of ramming his car into a crowd, will be arraigned on murder and other charges. The fbi and federal prosecutors have opened up civil rights investigations into that crash. Vigils across the country to honor the life of Heather Heyer and other victims. Overnight, mike pence spoke out telling nbc news, dangerous Fringe Groups like White Supremacists and the kkk has no place in america. President trump has not singled out specific groups in his response to this weekends violence. Well talk about that with Jeff Sessions in just a moment. First, we have a team of correspondents standing by with the latest. Well start with tom costello at the scene this morning. Tom, good morning. Reporter quite quiet here. We have not seen White Supremacists here. But their message on saturday was that this country belongs to whites and the jews should also get out. We had an alteration between a White Nationalist leader and protesters. Massive demonstrations across the country. In seattle sunday, chaos and confusion, police deploying flash grenades there to. Across the country, in denver, new york, baltimore and houston. While back in virginia, a solemn gathering at a site where a woman died on saturday. This morning, 20yearold alex fields will be in court charged with seconddegree murder. Accused of driving his car into a crowd ofadministrators on pur. Killing 32yearold Heather Heyer. Her mother, devastated. Im very sad. Im very, very sad. But i cant be angry because angry will make me hate. And hate only leads to more hate. Reporter outside of toledo, fields mother said his arrest caught her by surprise. I just knew he was going to a rally. I try to stay out of his political views. Reporter a former High School Teacher says, fields had neonazi leanings. He thought the nazis were great. And hitler was great. The White Supremacy thing, he was into it. Reporter in charlottesville on sunday, demonstrators shouted down kessler. Who suggested police and counterprotesters were for the violence. That is the antiwhite hate. Reporter within minutes, the crowd rushed the microphone, punching him in the face before Police Escorted him to safety. And virginia is mourning the loss of two state troopers. Killed when the Police Helicopter crashed following the melee. Governor Terry Mcauliffe blamed their deaths on the White Supremacists. Get out of the country. Reporter the fbi, the department of justice have launched a civil rights investigation, to determine if alex fields planned the attack in which he mowed down people with his car. Heather heyer was allegedly killed, the 32yearold. Down the street from me, theres a makeshift memorial to Heather Heyer who died on saturday. Many people wearing tshirts with her picture placed deadcenter on the tshirt itself. Police charged one man with misdemeanor assault for spitting on that nationalist yesterday. Thank you. President trump has come under fire for not explicitly condemning the role of White Supremacists in those deadly protests. And that has many of his administration doing some damage control this morning. Kristen welker has that part of the story for us. Kristen, good morning. Reporter craig, good morning to you. There is mounting pressure on President Trump to publicly denounce the white supremacist at the root of the violence in virginia. He didnt do it over the weekend. And democrats and republicans are united. He needs to speak out more forcefully. This morning, the white house grappling with the ongoing backlash over the words that President Trump didnt say in the wake of the violent clashes in virginia. Not specifically calling out white supremacist groups behind it all. He missed an opportunity to be explicit here. Call this White Supremacists evil. Reporter the president s statement on saturday, seemed to suggest that everyone shared some blame. Hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides. Many sides. Reporter the president s failure to condemn the nationalists, significant because during the campaign, some of those groups supported him. And over the weekend, former kkk leader david duke said they were protesting in the president s name. Were determined to take our country back. Were going to fulfill the promises of donald trump. Reporter the reaction swift and angry. Including from republicans. Senator marco rubio urged the president to call them terrorist attacks. And trumps shortlimited communications director. He needs to be harsh in the nature of that. Reporter on sunday, the president s daughter ivanka trump tweeting, there should be no place in society for racism, White Supremacy. The white house trying to contain the fallout, saying the president s exclusion includes the kkk and all white supremacist groups. The top advisers clarify. I condemn the groups that espouse this hatred, i cannot be clearer. Was that terrorism yesterday . What terrorism is, is the use of violence to incite terrorism and fear. Reporter as a candidate, mr. Trump said labels are important. Critical to eradicating radical islamic terrorism. Anyone who cannot name our enemy is not fit to lead this country. Reporter now, the president s saturday silence on white hate groups is creating a deafening problem for the white house. The president was silent on sunday, including on twitter. He has sent out a series of tweets, this morning, including this one. Heading to washington this morning. Much work to do. Focus on trade and military. But still nothing about virginia. Were hearing from the Vice President , mike pence, as he begins a weeklong trip to south and central america. He singled out White Supremacists, neonazis and the kkk, he defended the president for not citing those groups in his statement. Peter alexander is traveling with the Vice President and spoke with him oneonone. Peter, good morning. Reporter savannah, good morning to you. I traveled to colombia with the Vice President. During our interview, he did what many critics say the president should have done. He condemned White Nationalists, White Supremacists and neonazis. I began our conversation asking him why the president didnt call out those groups by name. President trump yesterday stated clearly that he condemns hate and violence in all of its forms. We will not tolerate hatred and violence of groups like White Supremacists and kkk and the neonazis. The extremist Fringe Groups have no place in the american debate. We condemn them in the strongest of terms. Why wont the president use those words . Why hasnt he . I think the American People heard the president idea, condemn in his words, organizations that purvey hate and violence. The American People heard him. What they also heard, peter, was the president calling for national unity. To be fair, some americans heard that. Others didnt, including orrin hatch. We should call evil by its name. My brother didnt give his life fighting hilter will for nazi ideas not to be challenged here at home. Was it a mistake for the president not the be more clear . If you were advising him now, would you suggest he do it differently . I think the president yesterday spoke into a national moment. Words that the American People needed to hear. We condemn acts of violence, acts of hatred. He said on many sides. Name those sides. What are the sides . As i said today, we condemn in the strongest terms, the hat terms the hate and violence advocated by groups like White Supremacists and neonazis and their ilk. Thats their one side and whats the other side as you say on many sides. As we look throughout the course of many years, weve seen protests turn violent. Weve seen Fringe Groups use peaceful protest and violent to bring violence in some cases against police officers. With respect there was only one group yesterday, mr. Vice president , killed an american. And were bringing the full weight of the federal government to bear the investigating and prosecuting that individual for that heinous act that took the life of that innocent woman. I will tell you, peter, that i take issue with the fact that many in the media are spending more time criticizing how the president addressed the issue. This is orrin hatch and corey gardner, sir. Im reading their quote. Many in the media spent an awful lot of time about what the president said instead of criticizing those who brought the hatred and violence to the streets of charlottesville, virginia. Reporter at the end of our conversation, i asked the Vice President if this was an act of domestic terrorism. He says it may well have been. He said the administration is exploring that. The president has directed the department of just toys initiate a full investigation into an attack that he said was eerily similar to other terrorist attacks around the world. Craig and savannah . Lets talk about the president s words that were focusing on at the moment and he said on saturday that this was an e greemgious display of hatred, bigotry and violence and he seemed to add on many sides. On many sides and he was asked and given an opportunity to specifically condemn White Supremacists who are protesting. Why didnt he call them out . He made a very strong statement that directly contradicted the ideology of hatred, hatred, bigotry, racism, White Supremacy. Those things must be condemned in this country. Theyre totally unacceptable, and you can be sure that this department of justice and his administration is going to take the most vigorous action to protect the right of people like Heather Heyer to protest against racism and bigotry. Were going to protect the right to assemble and march and were going to prosecute anybody to the full extent of the law that violates their ability to do so. You can be sure of that. Attorney general sessions, let me follow up a little bit, though. Because you say it was a forceful statement, but he adds that this violence thats been going on, this hatred and bigotry was on many sides. On many sides, he says, which seems to equivocate. What are the other sides . Well, weve had violence around the country in any number of ways over decades. Weve had these spasms of violence that are unacceptable in america. He did say he wasnt just talking about donald trump or barack obama. He said these problems have been going on for a long time. He said what happened in charlottesville is unacceptable. We need to find out what happened, that its wrong and we need to study it and see what, as a nation we can do to be more effective against this kind of extremism and evil, really. I thought it was a good statement, delivered just a few hours after the event. The next day, yesterday, they explicitly called out the nazis and the kkk. The president did not. Mr. Sessions, that came from the white house. It was attributed it came from the white house and it was authorized and heres a president , as you know, general sessions, hes not afraid to take to twit toteo chastise a number of folks, yourself included and not afraid to call out terrorism overseas, but here is a president that didnt do that. Why . The president did do that yesterday. That wasnt the president. Thats not the same as the president. Youre interrupting me. You asked me and i was giving you an answer. Go ahead. There is a white house spokesman that made that statement explicitly condemning these groups by name, and im sure hell talk again about it soon. Today. With the president of the United States is going to explicitly condemn these socalled altright groups and White Nationalist groups. He will be speaking to the people today. Im not sure what hell say. Thats my understanding, and hes been firm on this from the beginning. He is appalled by this. General sessions, the daily stormer is a neonazi publication. They didnt just celebrate the president s comments and they saw it apparently as some tacit sign of support from their side. This is what they posted shortly after the president s comments in part, and i think we have it here on the screen for you. President trumps comments were good. He didnt attack us. Nothing specific against us. They go on to say he said that we need to study why people are so angry on both sides and he implied the antifascist are haters. He said he loves us all. When asked to condemn he just walked out of the room. Really, really good. God bless him. Thats from a neonazi publication. Isnt that proof that the president didnt stand up sufficiently to White Supremacy on saturday . Theyre simply attempting to legitimate themselves in any way possible and well come after them for any vileations of the law and the president has condemned them by name and will continue to do so, and i am confident that the American People will reject this kind of evil ideology, and we need to take it seriously. It does appear that people are amazingly on naziism, and i think we take this seriously and go at it directly, morally, legally, politically, legitimately and any way possible to reject this kind of ideology that causes division and hatred in america. Its just not part of our heritage. Sir, before we let you go, we havent had a chance to speak to you since the president has made several remarks made to you, his own attorney general. My question to you is has the president apologized for his kind of public scolding of you . Have you spoken to him about it especially in light of the fact that youre out here this morning defending him . Well, i believe in the president s agenda. I believe in his leadership. He has a right to scold his cabinet members if hes not happy with them, and he has a right to have people in his cabinet that he believes will serve his agenda. Did you deserve that publicly like that . And talking about the issues that face us right now, and i appreciate the opportunity to serve in his administration. Has he ever apologized for doing so publicly . He has not apologized. Hes quite frank about his concerns and he expressed them openly. Lets end on that note. In the heart of one of the most expensive neighborhoods, in one of americas most expensive cities lies Presidio Terrace, historic and iconic with its manicured lawns and towering palm trees and multimillion dollar mansions, this is as exclusive as San Francisco gets. Tina lamb and husband Michael Chang are the newest arrivals to the neighborhood, taking in their new surroundings for the first time. Its Pretty Amazing this is now our street. They didnt buy one of the homes. The stake . The street. Thats right, the street. Up from the sidewalk to the outside going right along here, too, its all included. They snapped up Presidio Terrace and all its common areas for just 90,000. I dont think you can buy a bathroom for that much money. Thats because the Presidio Homeowners Association didnt pay its 14 a year tax for over 30 years so the city put it on the auction block. When we first got this property on the auction we had no idea that this is exactly what it was, but now that were walking here for the first time like this its Pretty Amazing. That didnt sit well with the residents so they sued the city and the couple to undo the sale. Their main complaint. The tax bill was being sent to the wrong address, and that the city made no reasonable efforts to inform the association about the auction. The city says its a closed matter. Its really the Property Owners responsibility to make sure that theyre uptodate on their taxes. Real Estate Attorney Michael Mclaughlin says that while homeowners should have kept the address uptodate, its a big punishment for a small mistake. Someone at the hoa screwed up here. Thats obvious, and thats a really big mistake, but its a clerical error. Tina and michael arent sure what theyll do with the property, one of the ideas making a buzz . They can count. And they learn to count a quarter one time. At age 4, you can learn that you can shop and Exchange Money for different things. Age 5 and 6, they learn you cant leave the store without paying for things. By the time theyre 7, they start to get the idea of value. A younger kid will think, i want those five pennies. An older kid will understand a nickel is the same thing. And by age 8, they start to get the idea of the future and saving for things in the future. Thats where it gets really interesting. And lets talk about how you can impart those lessons. Im guessing a lecture is not going to do the trick. Visual helps. Our kids need to see money, which is tough because we direct deposit our checks. Everything is on plastic. They need actual cash. And they probably should start with three very clear jars. One for saving, one for spending, one for giving on their dresser. And you can tell them how you want them to allocate the money they have. And you cant just say save. You have to say save for something. And then, help them track their way there. Much in the same way, you know how you do a growth chart . We have a growth chart at home where we mark them. Yes. You can do that for their savings goals so they can see theyre making progress. One thing you recommend, is that kids start a business. That brings us to j. J. Thats your expertise, starting businesses. How do you get kids starting in Something Like that . Kids are natural entrepreneurs. Were talking about earning the money. My kids this summer have had lemonade stands and dog walking services. You have to tap into that natural entrepreneurship that they already have. And then, support them with it. They say i want to do a lemonade stand, dont say im tired to get the lemons. Go with them tohe tto sre. They have to see the money. Let them see the lemons cost money. You have ideas about how to drive home the lessons. Play the business games. Ask situational questions. What do you mean by that . Im an entrepreneur. I cover it. My husbands an entrepreneur. We play games like, theres an empty store front at tend of our street. We say, okay, kids. Theyre 7, 8, 9, my kids. If you can start a company, what would it be . Now, who do you think would go to that . What do you think the price point should be . What are the issues with that company . Love that. Thats what happens when j. J. Is your mom. Fried chicken. On my death bed, i want Fried Chicken. Chicken, corn flakes were going to bread it with. Flour. Were going to make a brine. Were going to start with that. We want to get water boiling. Four cups of water. Were going to put in all of our ingredients to make this brian. Bay leaves and peppercorns. Juniper berries. Are juniper berries hard to find . If youre going to your regular store, youre probably not looking for them. If you cant find them, put in basil, anything you want. You bring this to a boil, chill it overnight. And you put it in the next day and bring in your chicken. Why cowe brine again . To bring in the flavor. Juiciness will keep that together. Get that brining overnight. Youre going to par cook this. You want to get the chicken just cooked. You cook it before you fry it . Yes. You dont have to worry about overfrying your chicken and having it overdone. A little chefs pro tip there. Yes. Well make the coating. Just want to get your flowur ina bag. Go ahead. And you can just dump your corn flakes right in here. I made a mess of them coming down. You just use your hands. Go ahead. You crunch it up in the bag. Thats kind of fun. Its really nice. This is the finished coating . This is the finished coating here. You just need flour and butter milk. You take the chicken. Its all par cooked and cooled. Youre going to roll it in the flour. Roll it in the butter milk. And you batter it up like this. And you have perfect chicken. To be clear, this is not a lowfat recipe. This is not lowfat. Dont go there. D go ahead. Its 375. You want to cook it until its nice and golden. Dont overcrowd the fryer. Okay. You want nice, crispy chicken. How many do you think we can get in there . This is a pretty good size. We can fit four to five pieces in this one. I notice youre frying the dark meat. Theres light and dark meat. The dark is my favorite. Nice and golden brown. It comes out like this. And you can sprinkle a little salt over the top. Its great. Crispy, crunchy. Really cheap corn flakes. Really good chicken. And nice, crispy, inexpensive corn flakes. We have a nice blueberry sweet and sour to go with the chicken. Can you make this the day before . Yes. You can make this two, three, four days. Water, sugar. Ketchup here. Cornstarch and vinegar. Were going to put that all in here. And bring that up to a slow boil and stir it. Its going to make this nice sauce. Ladies, whats the word down there . Loving every drop of this. The crust is so good. This blueberry stuff is delicious. Can you swap out the berries . You can use any freeuit. You have the sauce. Dump it in while its warm. And it will sort of cook itself. And then, we have to have some potato salad because were having Fried Chicken. You called this the perfect potato salad. I dont see mayonnaise or mustard going on. We need something refreshing. We have a vinegarbased potato salad. I have shallots that i macerated. Macerated is a fancy word. Pickle it. Pickled shallots. And just some olive oil. And a nice sprinkling of dill. And you always want to you want to have nice potatoes. And really work on forktender. Forktender. Dont want to overcook them. Dont want to undercook them. Just right. It takes a little practice. It will be perfect. We can twist this up. Salt and pepper to taste. And for dessert here . Two breaking news stories this morning, one in san leandro where 880 is set to reopen soon after it was shut down in response to a shooting this morning. That happened around 3 00 this morning and police say the passenger of the second car shot the driver in the head. That driver is in critical condition. Police shut down the southbound lanes of i880 while they were investiga investigating. The suspects have not been caught and there has been no motive identifying. In san jose, the other breaking news story, a shooting, this one injuring five people which happened around 10 30 last night on vista glen drive. Police say the victims were part of a vigil for people who died in a motorcycle accident. According to police, it was a driveby shooting. The five victims have no lifethreatening injuries but police have not given a motive and have no suspects in custody. Contra costa county public works started construction on the byron highway between Alameda County and community deablow. That continues through august 25th. There were these greatlooking cocktails. A different piece of fruit in them. And i said to sheinelle, can i have a i forgot i cant have a sip. Youre like, its okay. You can have a sip. Thats how you know i was done. Dylan says i can have a drink . Yeah, go ahead. After it was done. Im telling everybody. I just drank and everybody was like they couldnt believe i shared a drink. We jump and hop a lot. And when girls, especially, when we know the words to a song, were right up in your face, singing. Dylans in my face. My husband looked at me. We are back with curtis stone, who is our cohost this morning and right now this is good stuff. He is going to share some of his chef secrets that will change our lives in the kitchen. Starting with eggs. I get asked a lot how long can you keep eggs. You never remember when you buy them. Five or six weeks. Five to six week physice weeks kept at the right temperature. If you drop one in the water and it sinks, its fresh. We have fresh eggs. Thats good to know. Because the shell is porous. What will happen is a little air bubble will form once that egg white starts to dehydrate. Thats a telltale sign. Thats a good one. Now i want to test my eggs because i have no idea when i bought them. This is a way to protect your knives and not get cut. This is one of those things that we always have lying around. The center of the paper towel we have in the kitchen. You can flatten it out like that and then just put in the spine of the knife up against it. Just allows you to keep it safe. Perfect fit. Anyone reaching into the drawer will never cut their fingers. Yes, this one is my favorite price. Free. And you know what, ive lost a couple of them over time. So, this is you lost a couple knives. We should locate those. Lost a couple fingers. So, this is a good way to lose a finger. See how the board is slipping around. If youre trying to chop on it, a bit of a moving surface. One thing we always do in the kitchen and professional kitchen is take a wet piece of paper towel, put that down and then your board wont move around. Thats great. Another little tip. You know, sometimes youll cut garlic on a cutting board and it gets stinky and. And then i cut apples the next day and no good. The best move here is to get yourself fresh ginger. I like to grate it on to the board like that. And then sort of rub that in. The ginger will lift most of those flavors that youll find that harbor in the board. The ginger will lift that up which is a nice little tip. Thats interesting. Ginger is a great tool in the kits kitchen because as a marinade it tenderizes meat. Pork chops or steak whatever youre cooking grated ginger like this into a marinade. Thats oil and garlic and thyme. It adds some flavor. It smells good. It smells good, isnt it . Its fresh and delicious. It has a tenderizing property. It doesnt affect the flavor. No, youll get the ginger flavor, which is a good thing. Wow. Make that for me for lunch. It smells good. This is my last kitchen. Went from eggs to the egg carton. Now were sort of getting plastic egg cartons i like to use a container. If youre doing a stir fry or whatever you can chop up onions or garlic or whatever the ingredients are that youre using. Instead of getting bowls out of the fridge, this allows you to get a variety of different ingredients at your fingertips. Every one of these are good and usable. The condemnation came because people wanted the president to be more forceful and explicit and already today weve seen some real world fallout from that. The head of one Company Merck has withdrawn from his Manufacturing Council because he wasnt more explicit on saturday. This is an opportunity essentially for the president to in the eyes of his critic get it right the second time. We have heard his top advisers including the attorney general, including his Vice President mike pence say what the president did not. But right now i think the eyes of the nation are waiting to see if the president will be more explicit and what he will have to say about this. His surrogates certainly over the weekend were in defensive mode defending the president saying that he was perfectly clear in his condemnation here. So is he in a little bit of a spot of not trying to do a redo . His advisors say that the president was very clear, but on saturday afternoon when he spoke, the president was not in fact clear. He was not in fact explicit. While he did denounce the violence, what he called hatred, bigotry and violence, he then added the phrase on many sides. And repeated it for emphasis with an Unnamed White House spokesperson later following up to clarify the next day that the president of course would include White Nationalists, White Supremacists, members of the kkk in that group. But again, those are words that have not been heard from President Trump himself, at least not to this point. That may change now in the nooenext couple minutes, but well see. You heard as you talked about him call out some of these groups by name. Why is that notable . Here he did exactly that, something that again he declined to do over the weekend. A couple other points briefly. It was notable that the president omitted the three critical words that people talked about quite a bit over the weekend on many sides. You heard him again denounce hatred, bigotry and violence, but this time he did not add that phrase that brought him under so much fire on saturday afternoon. He also did not discuss the issue of domestic terrorism. That this has been a president who has been quick to denounce acts of terror both in his campaign and his administration overseas, but he is not calling that here. Again, his attorney general Jeff Sessions who was on nbc news this morning talked a little bit about that this when he was speaking about what happened in this incident. There is a Legal Definition that needs to be met, so perhaps that is why the president stayed away from doing that.
