president trump signed that executive order banning immigrants with the focus on certain countries. he calls it extreme vetting. some say it is amounting to a ban on muslims. fallout this morning from president trump's move to make good on a campaign promise. >> new vetting measures to keep radical islamic terrorists out of the united states of america. >> reporter: at the pentagon yesterday, trump signing an executive order to ban immigrants from the muslim countries. for the next 90 days. the order stops short of an all-out ban of muslims. >> donald trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. >> reporter: but it sparked outrage. the aclu calling the order quote a euphemism for discriminating against muslims. the dean at princeton said quote to defer travel from outside the united states. trump signed the order after the meeting with british prime minister theresa may. the two trying to focus on what they have in common instead of differences like whether russia should continue to face sanctions. >> we will see what happens. it is early to talk about that. >> reporter: trump expected to speak by phone with russian president vladimir putin. accused by u.s. intelligence of conducting a hacking campaign to help trump win the election. >> as far as putin and russia, i don't say good, bad or indifferent. i hope we have a fantastic relationship. it is possible. >> reporter: he is also expected to speak with angela merkel. now trying to build ties across the world as commander in chief. if not with the press, but here at the home. >> i think the media is the opposition party in many ways. the opposition party is losing badly. the media is on the opposition party's side. >> reporter: trump is scheduled to speak today to the leaders of japan and france. we are also told he will sign more executive orders. not clear what those orders will executive order on friday. 85,000 syrian refugees who came here on the program last year ending that. in addition to that, seven muslim countries for the next 90 days. no immigrants from those countries. first of all, ari, is this legal? is this something that could be challenged in court? is there any evidence that these refugees from syria pose a risk? >> no, in fact, this order focuses on countries that have not been the source of the 9/11 attackers or subsequent terror attacks. that makes everyone wonder where they got the list of countries. it will be challenged in court. monday will be the first challenge. >> already? >> yes. they have 20 individual plaintiffs who are going to argue it. is it likely to be upheld? probably. we can say there is great executive authority in the area of immigration. is it written as religious ban the way trump campaigned on? no. it doesn't touch on the large muslim countries in the world or saudi arabia who sent hijackers over here. it takes a list of countries flagged under other programs as dangerous and says we will suspend immigration from them. >> elise, how does this play politically? >> it is controversial when over the summer, trump raised the statement and he wanted to have a muslim ban. you have leaders like paul ryan saying this is against america and what america stands for. we will see a ton of outcry continue over this over making this about religion. and less about and it is unclear how it will improve national security. ari pointed out no refugee or immigrant from any of the countries affected under the ban have committed an act of terrorism in the u.s. since 1975. >> let's talk about the fact that president trump will talk to russian president vladimir putin today. he said friday it is too early to lift the sanctions put in place because of meddling in the u.s. elections. they me this, will the president face political backlash at home from congress if he lifts sanctions? >> this is another issue where if trump decides to lift the sanctions without having any results or without having russia making any progress toward the sanctions that were put in place because of the territorial annexation of crimea. this is trump doing nothing. this is theresa may's sticking point when she met with trump. she wants to say we will not lift anything. >> we heard from kacie hunt at the white house. president trump is considering more executive action. with the immigration, that was the 14th executive order in seven days. tpp, obamacare, the wall, now immigration. one of the complaints against president obama was he was a guy that liked to legislate using the pen and work around congress. how is that different this time? >> not different. >> and republicans who are upset when obama did that should be upset right now. there is no consistency. >> i missed it. >> you could get whiplash on that. i will say what we have seen from donald trump is a mix. executive orders that do a lot. reverse mexico city policy. on abortion is one example. this is real and suspends the immigration. we have seen others that have symbolic. he likes gathering reporters in to sign things. the obamacare executive order is doing nothing. in the sense it just says i don't like obamacare. you notice today after the executive order today, obamacare still exists. he is working on laws. he cannot change by signature. >> steve bannon was talking to "the new york times." he is calling the media the opposition party and we should quote shut up and listen. there is so much talk and the fact that this is a campaign to sow doubts with anything the media says. are we the new enemy? >> whether you are a journalist or american citizen, you root for the president. you want the economy and america to be strong. what steve bannon is saying who risk their lives who do reporting are an enemy of the state or political opponent of the government. >> anytime you hear something you don't agree with, you say it is fake news. >> that may be part of the motivation. i want to be clear. it is false. it will not change how i do my job. i will not be harder or softer on the administration because of it. it is obviously concerning when you have members of the government who have all of the powers of the government saying that a free press is the political opposition. that is not now we see ourselves. that is not the work we do. when you look at the history of the country. it is not a great sign when you have government officials saying. that mr. bannon may have political reasons. he may want to discredit the work out there for whatever reason. he may like a good fight. they decide it may be in the political interest to have fights with tv hosts than chuck schumer. it is conservatives to say lets keep government out of the press. the trump administration is taking a stand in the fight against abortion. vice president mike pence made headlines friday as the first ever sitting vice president to attend the march for life event in washington. nbc's kristen dahlgren was there. >> reporter: on the national mall, one of the issues that divides the nation taking center stage. >> i am pro-life. >> reporter: the anti-abortion movement finding new life in the new administration. >> this is a new day. a new dawn for life. >> reporter: promises from one of the president's top advisors and for the first time ever at the march for life. a vice president. >> we will not rest until we restore a culture of life in america. >> reporter: for those marching since the roe v. wade decision. many in the crowd were newer. kristen hawkins organized student marchers. >> this is the first generation of young people that reject abortion. >> reporter: americans are deeply divided on abortion. 59% say abortion should be legal in all or most cases. 37% oppose it. but in his first week, president trump signed executive order that bans foreign aid to groups that discuss or give counselling for let's look at the headlines this morning. serious allegations on baylor football team. they committed 52 acts of rape over a four-year period. the lawsuit filed friday by a baylor graduate who said she was raped in 2013. baylor has already fired its president, athletic director and football coach. investors thinking they would get rich on "hamilton" tickets got taken. two men in new york accused of a ponzi scheme. the men raised $81 million claiming they had big blocks of tickets to the show and a plan to re-sell them for a profit. the feds say there was never any deal. the money went to personal expenses like jewelry and tuition. a frightening moment caught on camera. a pickup truck in syracuse, new york, slams into a bus. six were treated at hospitals. the 82-year-old pickup truck driver swerved to avoid traffic. it happened earlier this month, the video emerged friday after a freedom of information request. the comeback of tiger woods seems like a case of two steps forward and one step back. woods missed the cut friday in the first pga event in a year and a half. after shooting a 76 followed by a 72, tiger said he needs to get more rounds under his belt. hollywood is suspect stole it while on the run from them. our nbc chopper was overhead. the dramatic scene played out yesterday evening. you may have seen it on our 5:00 news. as police chaserd the man through a busy construction site where he was trying to hide. one of three men police spotted in a stolen unmarked police car earlier yesterday. two men were arrested immediately, but that third guy, he jumped out, started running, and put part of san jose's japantown on lockdown. police had rifles drawn searching cars and homes for that suspect. >> when we attempted to take him into custody he resisted. one officer deployed a taser in an effort to overcome the resistance. >> all three men are now being questioned in relation to the bank robbery which happened thursday in scotts valley. staid-wide building regulations going into effect immediately all aimed at preventing a repeat of the deadly berkeley balcony collapse. new standards voted on yesterday by the california building standards commission would improve construction of all exterior balconies and walkways. in 2016, 64 killed after it was determined an apartment balcony in berkeley had not been properly constructed. coming up maker of sophie the giraffe says you carefully clean the surface with a damp cloth, but never emurse in water. these types of rubber toys are a commonplace for mold because we use them in baths. they thanks. investigators are confident all three men involved in a bank robbery are behind bars this morning. this happened after a wild 30-hour manhunt which had residents in several south bay neighborhoods on edge. we have video from downtown san jose last night. you can see this stolen chevy malibu being towed away. law enforcement officers were looking for this car. the bank robbery suspect stole it while on the run from authorities. before that, our nbc chopper was over the dramatic scene y d yesterday evening and police chased this man through a construction site where he was trying to hide from them. he's one of the three men police found in a stolen police car yesterday afternoon. two men arrested immediately. the third jumped out running putting parts of san jose's japantown on lockdown. police had rifles in hand, searching cars and homes for that suspect. >> when we attempted to take him into custody he resisted. one officer deployed a taser in an effort to overcome the resistance. >> all three men are being questioned in relation to the bank robbery, which by the way, happened at a bank of america on thursday in scotts valley. danger from above for east bay drivers. cars along high 24 along 680 getting hit causing sun roofs and the windshields to shatter. suspecting someone is throwing things at the cars but don't know for sure. the chp wants to know who or want may be behind it and urging drivers to report incidents including where and when their car was hit. just shy of 5:59 coming up on "today in the bay," treated to a once in a lifetime
