Welcome to philadelphia. This is the final day of the Democratic National convention but about last night. I was trying to figure out how to describe it. I think potent is the word that comes to mind whether youre a democratic or republican, you have to agree that was a series of very powerful speeches. Now the pressure is on Hillary Clinton. Its her night tonight. This is the biggest speech of her career. Lets go down to Andrea Mitchell at the Wells Fargo Center on the convention floor. Good morning, andrea. Reporter good morning, savannah. Barack obama passed the baton to Hillary Clinton. In perhaps the most powerful speech of his presidency. A political embrace that would have seemed unimagable when they battled each other for the white house. After a fiery 44 minute speech from the current commander in chief president obama returned to the Convention Stage laying out a passionate case for Hillary Clinton. This year in this election, im asking you to join me to reject cynicism and reject fear and to summon what is best in us to elect Hillary Clinton as the next president of the United States. Reporter urging democrats to turn out on election day. Theres never been a man or a woman, not me, not bill, nobody more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States of america. Reporter mr. Obama sought to bring the party together. Channeling his 2008 rallying cry. Democracy isnt a spectator sport. America isnt about, yes, he will. Its about yes, we can. Reporter then turning his attention to donald trump unleashing a series of pointed attacks. The donald is not really a plan guy. Our greatness does not depend on donald trump. The American Dream is something no wall will ever contain. Our power doesnt come from some selfdeclared savior promising that he alone can restore order as long as we do things his way. We dont look to be ruled. Reporter besides president obama, a powerhouse lineup took took to the podium defending clinton including new york city mayor Michael Bloomberg, an independent. Im a new yorker. I know a con when i see one. Reporter Vice President ial nominee tim kaine breaking into spanish. [ speaking spanish ] sharing his values as a missionary in honduras. He never tells you how hes going to do any of the things he says hell do. He just says believe me. Reporter perhaps the most fiery speech of the night came from the current Vice President joe biden. I know what shes passionate about. I know hillary. Reporter acting as chief attack dog, biden delivered. Hes trying to tell us he cares about the middle class. Give me a break. Thats a bunch of malarkey. He has no clue about what makes america great. Actually, he has no clue period. Reporter voters will hear from clinton herself when she takes the stage tonight after four days of hearing democrats vouch for her, this is her big chance to sell herself. Matt and savannah . In terms of the staging, the choreography and impact of last night alone, what would you give it . What score . 10 out of 10. I thought they had a perfect night last night. Whatever you think of president obamas policies, as a political messenger, hes in a league of his own. I would say 8 out of 10. Joe biden, the current Vice President , delivered a stronger message than tim kaine, the new nominee for Vice President. They had to put him in the prime time hour. You cant bury your own Vice President ial candidate. I think some people missed the strongest speech of the night. Weve seen pieces of the speeches now but in terms of strategy, i thought the whole night had several points where it seemed they were reaching out to the center and not just center, reaching out to republicans. You had tim kaine saying if you love the party of lincoln, we have place for you here. You had president obama reaching out. You had Michael Bloomberg speaking. When you sit in the hall, youre aware of how the hall is reacting. If you take your interview with president obama, Michelle Obamas speech monday night and president obamas speech last night, this is a family worried about the kind of country their daughters are going to grow up in. I thought the of two them delivered speeches designed for the tv audience to say to republicans this is who we are as a country. They took on trumpism more than they took on trump. I thought that was a direct appeal to independents and swing voters. I want to go back to joe bidens speech. You talked about that a second ago. Probably the most powerful of his career but was it impossible to sit in the room and not think what could have been . If you look at the polling right now, donald trump has a real shot at the presidency and the reason is hes doing much better than mitt romney or any republican recently with blue collar white voters. States like specifically, ohio, even maybe michigan. Joe biden was the first major voice at this convention to talk to those voters. If theres one thing democrats might regret this week, they didnt focus on that enough. Very quickly, i thought it was interesting that the president and tim kaine took on the issue of trusting hillary. Tim kaine made it direct. You can trust hillary because. Do you think that was effective to take on that elephant in the room . Highlhts her vulnerability. We talked about 20point deficit she has with donald trump on questions of trustworthiness. Reporter House Speaker paul ryans office emphasized putin should stay out of this election. But no one in gop leadership condemned trumps remarks. Most republicans staying silent. Many National Security experts stunned by trumps stance. Former nsa director Michael Hayden appointed by george w. Bush telling bloomberg, perhaps he doesnt know what hes talking about and a trump gaff making headlines. Tim kaine, who did a terrible job in new jersey. First act he did in new jersey was asked for 4 billion tax increase. Not very popular in new jersey. He still isnt. The problem, tim kaine was the governor of virginia, not new jersey. Trump probably thinking of tom kean. The former governor of new jersey. Trump on the campaign trail later today. Lets turn back to steve and nicole. Is this one of those occasions where you have something that gets Foreign Policy establishment totally exercised that people have this collective outrage but if youre a trump voter and supporter, good for you. There he goes telling it like it is. I dont imagine donald trump is going to lose any support he already has because of this. The question though is donald trump pulled into the lead in one poll. Lagged behind in the others. Those few swing voters that there are, does this unnerve them. Thats the potential problem. I talked to them yesterday on the way into the arena and they view the day as success because theyre in the news. The Trumps Campaign goal of the week was to get in the headlines every day to knock democrats off message. What will he say tomorrow to take the attention away from hillarys speech tonight . We spoke with her exclusively as she was putting the finishing touches on her speech and i started by asking chelsea what it will feel like to watch her mother accept the democratic nomination for president. Ill try really hard to not cry. I just think my heart will burst. This election is so important to me because i am now a mom. As proud as i am of my mom, its about my children. I couldnt imagine a better president for them. I couldnt imagine a better grandmother for them either. Just standing there thinking about my children looking at my mom, it will be overwhelming. Youll set the table in a way for the most important speech of her life. What do you want to say about her . That people dont know because your mom, your dad, your family, theyve been in the public eye for decades. What dont we know . I hope to convey even just a small sense of why i am so proud and grateful to be her daughter. Why im grateful for the example she set for me as a mom. I hope that people will just get a sense of why im so proud to be standing it will be a deeply personal speech. This is not a speech that will try to separate her from donald trump . Im going to talk as her daughter. Im an only child. A unique position that i have and i hope that people understand even more when im done than when i started about why i love her so much and admire her so much. You know your mom as well as anyone. You hear the things that are said about her all the time. Lack of trust. People have negative comments and negative ratings are high. There has to be a disconnect in your mind between the person you know. How do you explain the disconnect . It is such a disconnect. What you were saying and what we heard last week in cleveland, thats not the person that i know. Thats not the person that i grew up with that im so proud to stand beside and introduce here in philadelphia. How do you put that in perspective . A lot of gratitude. Incredibly grateful to my parents for always believing in hard work and believing in never giving up. Also a lot of humility. I feel its important to me to support them, to respect this opportunity and this trust theyve been given by democrats and i certainly hope my mom will prevail in november. How do you digest that . Matt, as proud as i am as a daughter, my most Important Role now is as a mother. When i was watching what was happening, what was being said in cleveland last week, i kept thinking about what my mom had said repeatedly when people asked her similar questions. Shes tough. She can take whatever people say about her. Its harder for a family member. As a mom, what i found so disturbing were things that were being said on a national stage. On the stage and off the stage around the convention about women, about minorities, about muslims, about immigrants. Thats not what i want my children to hear. Thats not representative of the country that i want my children to grow up in. And so that actually i found far more upsetting as a mom, as a woman, as an american and even as my mothers daughter than anything they said about my mom. I wonder if you can have an impact here as a daughter. By the way, this goes both ways. Your mom and her surrogates have been out there saying some pretty terrible things about donald trump calling him a fraud and a bigot and things like that. Youre a daughter. You know ivanka trump. Would you consider her a friend . Absolutely. Why not convene a summit . A childrens summit. Maybe just a daughter summit. You and ivanka sit down over a cup of coffee and discuss tone and discuss what its like to hear those things coming out of the other candidates mouth about the person that you love. It never occurred to me. Its something i would consider. I think it was clear last week when ivanka introduced her dad that shes so proud of him. I hope it will be at least as clear why im so proud of my mom when i introduce her here in philadelphia. And yet clearly ivanka and i have different views about who we think should be our president and who we think youre both daughters. You both love these people. Its clear, chelsea, that donald trump is willing to bring up some of the darkest moments of your familys past as an issue. Would you sit down with ivanka and say that shouldnt fit into the rules of engagement . Well, i dont expect her to always have to defend her father. I mean, i think its clear that mr. Trump is running his campaign and saying what he thinks is important in this election. I think what were seeing here in philadelphia is a strong contrast to that. My mother is not engaging in divisive speech. Did you write your own speech . I was breastfeeding aidan and practicing with megan, and she was giving me feedback, and i was exchanging ideas. Even aidan contributed to the speech. So much discussion about what your dad would be called if your mom becomes the next president of the United States. Have you talked about it at home . We talked about it because weve been asked about it. We weve been asked about it. What does he want to be called . He likes to harken back to irish roots, he would like to be called first laddie. Im voting for first gentleman. I decided after only one day of matt love, im going to first laddie. I like that better. It has a ring to it. Interesting to see how she does tonight. I dont think she loves the spotlight. Stepping on that stage is going to be a big deal for her. Can you imagine the pressure for any of these children of political candidates. Now hinckley could be released as early as next week. That order is sparking a dispute within one of americas most prominent families about the man that tried to kill their father. This morning a family feud over the release of John Hinckley jr. From a psychiatric facility 35 years after hinckley shot president Ronald Reagan outside a washington, d. C. Hotel. Members of the reagan family now speaking out. While reagans oldest son michael suggested its time to forgive hinckley tweeting my father did more than say the lords prayer. He lived it in forgiving John Hinckley jr. Maybe we should do the same. For reagans daughter, patti, a different reaction, releasing a statement in part saying forgiving someone in your heart doesnt mean you let them lose in virginia to pursue whatever dark agendas they may still hold dear. And everyone has an opinion. Hillarys long journey had an unlikely beginning. She was a gold water girl in a republican family. In college, she was out front in feminine and antiwar politics. Her commencement speech against the war was the beginning of her public life. Challenge now is to practice politics is the art of making what appears to be impossible, possible. At yale law school, she met an equally ambitious politically passionate soul mate. It was the beginning of a storied and stormy relationship. Public in good times and bad. Hillary went home with bill to arkansas but they had bigger plans. Lawyer, walmart board member, governor of arkansas and at bill sides when he ran for the gold. And we all met jennifer flowers. Bill survived with hillarys help. I sit here because i love him and i respect him. I covered their arrival in washington with the gores. It was a new generation. The clintons were like the homecoming queen and king. There were some tough times in the white house. The suicide of vince foster. The collapse of her Health Care Plan and monica. Hillary was humiliated but she didnt cut and run. The two hillaries, tough in public, but warm, loyal to friends and others in private. She wants to not be seen as vulnerable and frankly maybe what America Needs right now is to understand that this is a vulnerable woman who cares deeply about her family and their family. Hillary easily won a senate seat in new york. It was the perfect launching pad for president. But it was a newcomers turn. President obama, however, gave her a high profile consolation prize, secretary of state. And she became a nonstop globetrotter. Benghazi, libya, republicans made it her fault. Even though their own investigations couldnt quite close the deal. And now she is the first woman to be an election away from the white house with the former president at her side. All new this morning, two teens suspected of setting fire to a a Community Center last week will not be tried as adults. The District Attorney says the 16 and 17yearold have been charged in juvenile court. Investigators say those teens confess ed to setting the fire, but theres no evidence that it was an intentional act. Its about 2 million worth of damage as a result. People who run the center say they are now trying to find new homes for many of its summer programs. And resources right now are strained and concerns high u over the deadly wildfire that continues to tear through the county. Evacuations are now being expanded from the fire that started six days ago just north of big sur. Its grown from 34 up. And 3,500 firefighters are still on the scene.
