This morning, the quickthinking pilot who got the plane down safely. Hero stabbed, spencer stone, one of the americans who stopped a terrorist on a french train knifed nearly to death. This morning the latest on his condition and the hunt for suspects. And terrifying plunge, a group of hikers falls into a river in new zealand when the bridge they were walking on suddenly snapped. But amazingly, everyone is okay today, friday, october 9th, 2015. Announcer from nbc news, this is today, with matt lauer, and savannah guthrie. Live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. And good morning, everyone, welcome to today on a friday morning, weve got willie in for matt. The most exciting news for air travelers we didnt mention in the open, boeing is developing a plane going to be ready next week that has overhead space, can you fit your bag in the overhead. There it is, wheres the angelic music . Bigger overhead space. Well show you that coming up. But first the days top story, the washington whiplash, Congressional Republicans if turmoil after the man expected to be the next house speaker, congressman Kevin Mccarthy dropped out of the running, shocking everyone. Could one former speaker be angling for the job now . Nbc National CorrespondentPeter Alexander has the latest from capitol hill. Peter, good morning. Good morning to you, you said it congress is in chaos now, its still entirely unclear which republican will emerge the unifying figure in the party. Several highprofile members are now pushing for the former Vice President ial nominee, paul ryan, to reconsider and throw his hat in the ring. The chair declares the house in recess. Its a question consuming the capital. Who will inherit John Boehners gavel as house speaker. I think i shocked some of you, huh . With Kevin Mccarthys stunning decision to pull out of the race all eyes are San Francisco cussed on paul ryan. Ryan insisted hes not interested, but wouldnt rule out a run. Still, ryan, boehner and mccarthys top choice may be the only candidate who can unite bitterly divided House Republicans. Maybe we can persuade paul. Paul, he ran for Vice President , hes a real conscience of the party. The speaker doesnt have to be a member of congress, which explains why former st. Peter, newt gingrich, who resigned after a republican rebellion two decades ago said he would consider a return. This is why George Washington came out of retirement, because there are moments you cant avoid. Just this week, a conservative republican warned any candidate for leadership who has committed misdeeds should withdraw from the race. But mccarthy dismissed that as his reason for exiting. No, come on. Boehner has said hell stay on as speaker until a reelection for his replacement in the coming weeks. With Congress Facing a staggering todo list. Just weeks left to pass a spending bill to keep the government open, raise the countrys debility limit or face default and pass a critical bill to repair americas roads. Democrats warn the disarray comes with consequences. Were concerned that the board of directors of the gre greatest country on the face of the earth is dysfunctional, unable even to select a leader. But on the campaign trail, donald trump gave himself a pat on the back for mccarthys move. Into zbl theyre giving me a lot of credit for that. Because i said you really need somebody very, very tough and very smart. Less than 24 hours after mccarthys stunning announcement, right now in the building behind me, House Republicans are trying to figure out whos up next and what the path forward looks like. Savannah and willie . Peter alexander, thank you. Chuck todd is the moderator of meet the press. Kevin mccarthy this time yesterday looked like a guy who was going to be the next speaker of the house, he stunned a lot of republicans in that room. How shocked were you to hear the news . I wasnt shocked that mccarthy was going to struggle. I thought his future was going to be at the benghazi committee. If Hillary Clinton got the best of the benghazi committee, i thought his speakership candidacy was in trouble. I guess im shocked that he didnt even try to see if he could get the votes he needed by the end of the month. On that front what happened yesterday clearly shocking. Whats happens next . Because you have a vacant job over there in the house of representatives. The speakership, its a powerful job. And yet you dont have people falling all over themselves to fill it. Nobody wants it for the very reasons why john boehner is leaving the job. The place is impossible to run right now. Its going to be impossible to run during a president ial election. Particularly the primary. The same forces that are dividing the Republican Party, trump, carson, fiorina from bush, rubio, all that stuff these are the forces in the house that are basically saying we dont want the same people running the house. I think that thats, i think mccarthy was, was going to be boehner 2. 0, i think a lot of conservatives saw that and i think thats why they were trying to torpedo this thing. The name on everyones lips in washington is paul ryan. He was the running mate to mitt romney in 2012, a guy highly respected among conservatives and republicans on the hill. Hes a guy who also has said i dont want this job. What are the odds that he ends up being the speaker . I think theyre getting higher and higher. I think paul ryan is a man who can be convinced of saying youve got to do it for the party. I think the best scenario that those that want ryan to do this, is basically saying hey, you only have to do the job until the end of 16. You dont have to pledge to do it. Just be the temp at this point. Do whatever it takes to be, to fix this thing for now. So i think the scenario is ryan will do this, but only temporarily. Hell have to answer the call, chuck todd, thank you, sir. Democratic president ial candidate senator Bernie Sanders will be chucks guest on meet the press. My wife and three children were christmas shopping. Tractortrailer broadsided them. The video is aimed at highlighting bidens resilience. Showcasing the moment in 1972 when a car crash killed his wife and daughter and left his two sons seriously injured. Biden, who had just been elected to the u. S. Senate for the first time decided to serve amid his tragedy. By focusing on my sons, i found my redemption. In a statement, the Senior Adviser to the group said nobody has more respect for the Vice President and his family than we do. Obviously we will honor his wishes. Its really my family and i have the Emotional Energy to run. Did also comes as biden is grieving once again. Having lost his son, bo, in may. The Vice President has acknowledged hes not sure he has the strength to run. Now that sixfigure ad never officially aired. Meanwhile, the new yorker is reporting that biden staffers were briefed by the Democratic National committee on filing deadlines, an indication he could be leaning towards yes. In the meantime, its this cold front thats bringing most of its rain just south of st. Louis right now. This is a cold front thats actually going to slowly spread eastward through the day today. And then as it slowly moves through South Carolina, well see heavier pockets of rain develop across the western part of the state Early Saturday Morning but as we go into saturday afternoon, this area of low pressure develops and this is going to be the reason why we could see some areas of heavier downpours. Also, more of an easterly component to the wind. Thats going to increase the regular high tide. So we could see more coastal flooding.
