died in an avalanche. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engle reached base camp, he is back in kathmandu this morning. describe what you saw for us. >> reporter: good morning. first of all a bit of news. we spoke to three rescue pilots, all of them have told us that they do not believe that there are any climbers who are still trapped or stranded on mount everest. that most have made their way down to the base camp, the place where we visited today. and are making their way off of the island -- off of the base camp, or they have already been evacuated. the base camp is where the main avalanche occurred and when we were able to visit it today we got a sense of what happened. on saturday around noon when the earthquake struck, a large piece of ice and snow and rock broke off of a mountain overlooking base camp. it fell with incredible speed, that avalanche swept through the middle section of the base camp, taking away tents, sending some climbers hundreds of feet in the airment of it also wiped out the only medical facility on the base camp, killing at least 15, maybe 17 people. maybe more. they haven't been able to go through all of the snow banks and there is still some efforts underway to locate the remains of climbers or sherpas in the area to assist them. we did see some bodies coming out, there was one body marked in a body bag, it said unknown body. so clearly the identification process must go on. it was really only when we were there today that we actually understood what happened, how this long base camp which is at 17,600 feet was cut in half by a falling glacier. >> richard engel, thank you. imagine it takes climbers days and days and days just to get to base camp. luckily richard got in in a helicopter. getting the people off that area is going to take a long time. >> absolutely. there are survivor stories as well. a man pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed hotel in kathmandu. he told rescuers he was banging on debris hoping someone would hear him but had nearly given up hope. despite that news, many villages remain hard to reach and the death toll is rising. miguel almaguer has more on that. good did morning to you. >> reporter: matt and savannah, good morning. we're 45 minutes east outside of kathmandu, in a small community that was really hit hard by this massive 7.8 earthquake. this is the area where the fairfax county search and rescue teams, the crew from virginia, has come to look for survivors. they have picked this spot for a reason. this area was highly packed with thousands of people, this residential community, many of these homes and apartment complexes are five stories high, built primarily of brick and wood. you can see folks here are digging for survivors. because for several days they say they could hear people calling for help here. they could hear them banging on any kind of wood or brick they can find. so crews have picked this area because they believe there is a possibility there are survivors here. crews say they will be out over the next several days, they are fairly optimistic with the help of locals, they will be able to find anyone who may have survived this earthquake. as you know in haiti they found folks up to a week after. so, later on today they will be out here and a crew of 11 also with search teams and dogs, looking for any sense, any possibility that folks have survived this earthquake. today at this hour, you'll see the locals out here doing what they can to try to clear debris, to look for neighbors, to look for friends and family that are still trapped here. they believe hundreds of people may be buried in this one community is alone. crews have a lot of work ahead of them. matt, savannah, back to you. >> thank you so much. that bird's-eye view shows you the scope. >> here at home supreme court justices are going to weigh the historic argument in a case that could bring same-sex marriage to all 50 states. while we wait for a decision the issue is quickly becoming a major factor in the 2016 presidential race. nbc's andrea mitchell has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the supreme court was deeply divided on an issue that gained widespread acceptance across the country. since the last presidential campaign and could transform this one. it looked and felt like a political rally, one of the hottest issues of 2016, now in front of the supreme court, people lining up for days to get inside. >> when do we want it? now. >> marriage brings together men and women to reproduce the human race. >> western civilization for thousands of years. >> we are criminalizing christianity in this country. >> there is no longer any room for religious liberty. >> ted cruz got tripped up on the issue by holding a political event last week at the manhattan apartment of two gay business partners who later apologized under pressure from the gay rights community for hosting cruz. hillary clinton who did not endorse same-sex marriage last time she ran is now firmly on board, issuing a campaign video to prove it. >> i was actually thrilled when you recently urged the supreme court to rule in favor of marriage equality. >> reporter: our new nbc news poll shows that 59% of americans support same-sex marriage. this is a problem for republicans in a general election campaign unless of course the court rules in june it is a constitutional right, and that would end the political debate. matt. >> andrea mitchell in washington for us. thanks very much. natalie is following a story in washington, a
