>> reporter: hi, savannah. this all went down at 3:00 a.m., midnight pacific time when a prisoner overpowered two private security guards who were watching him. the suspect is described as 6'1", 170 pounds. he was custody on federal bank robbery charges. they started suspect, a shot was fired. nobody injured. then a short time later they believe he got int carjacked a car with a woman inside and then took that vehicle some distance here. they're looking for the suspec but they believe he's changed vehicles. he's no lo toyota camry. adding to the confusion of the morning and frankly into the drama of the morning, an unrelated car chase on the beltway around washington, d.c. this morning and also i-95. police were trying to stop a silver pickup truck driven by a female suspect who we believe she's wanted in connection with credit card and forgery charges but that vehicle would not stop. it became very dramatic. the vehicle going up and over then crashing into several police cars. police cars crashing into the vehicle, three window of the vehicle to get the suspect out. so she is in custody. meanwhile the original suspect prisoner, is still missing here in northern virginia with this massive manhunt under way. >> a pretty tense morning outside of washington. tom, thank you. another major story we are covering this morning is t growing backlash against t law in indiana that some argue discriminates against gays. amid boycotts of the state, this is the glaring headline in says fix this now. and just this morning indiana's governor has scheduled a n controversy. nbc's gabe gutierrez is with us live. good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning. the fallout continues to grow, nine ceos have signed a letter delivered to the state's governor and state lawmakers asking them to change this law and on monday, marriott's ceo had strong words calling the quote idiotic. this morning, a stark editorial on the front page of "th indianapolis star." it comes after more protests outside monday night's city council meeting opposing indiana's new religious freedom restoration act up. >> indianapolis is open for business. that we are not going to stand for discriminati >> reporter: openly gay diver greg louganis -- >> tuc know, is -- it's discriminatory and hateful. >> reporter: critics say the law is anti-gay and it was passed partly in response to the state's ban on same-sex marriage being overturned last year, but overnight in the op-ed, mike pence wrote the new law co it mirrors federal law that president bill clinton signed in 1993. >> does this law allow businesses to deny services based on their religious beliefs? >> he drives home and we see two police cars right behind his car and he was like she's gone. >> i remember that night we all slept together. it was hard. >> the sisters are trying to remember their mother by how she lived, but are haunted by the unanswered questions. >> i was able to picture it and i kept replaying it in my mind. was she hurt? >> good morning you to. we have breaking news this morning. a manhunt is under way just outside of washington, d.c., this morning for an armed prisoner who staged a dramatic escape from area hospital. tom costello is at the scene with the latest. to tom, good morning. >> this started at 3:00 this morning here at inova fairfax hospital when a suspect by the name of osan asi being held on a federal bank robbery case overpowered two private security guards, took one gun, a shot wars fired, nobody injured. he then escaped. that led to a massive police presence here and s.w.a.t. teams surrounding the hospital going door to door, room to room looking for the suspect. they think he got out of the hospital by hiding in somebody's car and then eventually that car was crashed. he then fled the scene. meanwhile, adding to the chaos on the morning, an unrelated police chase on the beltway here, chasing a woman in a pickup truck. she was wanted in a credit card fraud scheme. the police actually to crash into her car, box her car in. they then had to smash the window to get her out. she was taken into custody. meanwhile, right now the chase continues looking for this original suspect who escaped from the hospital here. again, the name is wassen assaye. so far, nobody has been injured. nobody -- no other shots fired. but the police are very anxious to find the suspect. they think he's armed and dangerous here in northern virginia. natalie, back to you. >> tom costello in falls church, virginia, thank you. the "indianapolis star" is using the front page to join the national outcry over their religious freedom law. the paper is calling for equal protections to be extended to gays and lesbians. critics say the law allows businesses to discriminate against same-sex couples. indiana's governor is striking back with a "wall street journal" op-ed saying the law contains no reference to extoll orientation. authorities say the remains of more than half of the passengers in the german plane crash has been identified by dna. on monday prosecutors announced the co-pilot had suicidal tendencies before getting his pilot's license. it's believed he locked the captain out of the cockpit and deliberately crashed the plane into the french alps killing all 150 people onboard. the california fire captain seriously injured while battling a house fire is now fighting for his life. his horrific fall through a roof directly into the flames all caught on tape sunday. doctors say the 25-year veteran suffered life threatening burns to at least 65% of his body. he remains in critical condition. and an amazing sight in canada's arctic. thousands of reindeer made their annual spring journey this week. crowds came out in the blustery cold to watch the spectacle. more than 3,000 reindeer migrated from their wintering grounds. the crossing is an annual event in which the herders move the reindeer across the ice road. pretty cool scene. 8:05 now. let's get a check of the weather. >> i found this sign out here. this is alex. it is her 16th birthday. she said if she gets on tv, she'll get a car from her dad. >> yes glchlt is dad watching? >> ready. >> you said running. maybe not. that's what's trending today. >> work on the jokes. meantime day two of our special series "do you believe?" this morning the very big question who is god today. jenna bush hager is here with more on that. good morning. >> good morning. according to our exclusive survey two-thirds of u.s. adults believe that god exists. but research shows fewer americans, especially young people are affiliated with an organized religion. i recently met up with three religious leaders trying to change all that answering big questions along the way. >> god is jesus. >> god is love. >> god is possibility. >> reporter: who is god is hardly a new question. but it's one that is asked of today's religious leaders all the time. >> i'm judith smith, the pastor of the city church in seattle, los angeles and gautuadalajara. >> i'm rabbi sharon in los angeles. >> when they all know god. >> god sent his only son of the world. >> god says okay abraham. >> reporter: although there are differences in theology one thing all of these leaders have in common is their desire to help their congregation find a meaningful and especially modern relationship with whomever they believe god to be. >> the sentence was imprinted on my mind in my heart, and it was you'll be a preacher to your generation. >> the bible declays he who knew no sin became sin for us. >> reporter: pastor judith smith commutes weekly from his home in seattle to los angeles where his services in hotel ballrooms draw huge crowds. even a few celebrities like justin bieber. >> people are looking for a cause of visiting themselves and they want to know that their life matters beyond the 9:00 to 5:00 the checking savings account and having a retirement fund. >> reporter: jason kennedy finds judo's approach more reflts.levant. >> church is different these days. i grew up it was stiff and you couldn't wear a hat. >> people want an off-the-chain experience. this is hot. i want to cry, i want to dance, i want to move. ♪ i'm free ♪ >> reporter: reverend jackie lewis in new york at a protestant church using the old to attract the new. >> this is an old traditional building. when you walk into the door there are these loving people at the door who hug you before they know you. and you look around the room and there are old people and young people and, you know every ethnicity, every tribe represented. >> reporter: inclusiveness, she says is often what attracts the newest members to her congregation. >> it took me time to realize that god loves me no matter what. whether i'm gay or whether it is. >> when i come to church i believe in hope more than anything else. >> reporter: talk a little bit about why some religion can be -- can feel exclusive. >> i don't want to work for the god that isn't for the woman. i don't want to work for a god that doesn't respect a man. i don't want to work for a god who doesn't respect catholic nuns and priests. and we ask god to love god and expect that god loves all the people and that there's faith and grace for all of the people. >> reporter: rabbi sharon agrees. >> it's not just us opening our hearts to god but also trying to receive what it is that we can hear back. >> reporter: although she draws hundreds to her services she uses smaller house parties like this one to maximize connections. ♪ >> part of my job, i believe, is to help people recognize that within our tradition, which is 4,000 years old, there's incredible depth, incredible beauty and majesty and mystery that can help them each of us actually live life as incredible meaning and purpose. >> what's going on from god's perspective? >> it brings a dialogue which you don't really get a lot of especially with other experiences with religion. >> reporter: the intimacy of a home she finds, makes asking the tough questions easier. why do bad things happen to good people? >> i don't think god makes bad things happen in the world. i think god helps give us the strength to survive and persevere and find meaning in our suffering. >> reporter: despite their influence, none of these leaders have all the answers. but they say it's that doubt that puts people of all faiths in the same boat. are there moments when you lose your faith? >> i think a faith that's big enough to hold anger and to hold resentment and to hold struggle and wrestling is a faith that can hold me. >> in loss and pain and grief, there's always doubt, but i think what makes faith beautiful is that there are moments of doubt. >> i haven't lost my faith in love. i think everybody wants to feel like their lives have an impact. and our faith should give us that. >> and all three leaders are making a huge impact in their communities and beyond. in fact middle church here in manhattan has been hosting first responders. they are right across the street from that building that, you know, exploded last week and they've been helping the entire week. but i just love these people because they were so open. >> that's what i love is you see more and more that more churches realize the need to just be open and accepting of people of all faiths. >> and not so rigid. it was pretty incredible. >> jenna, thank you very much. and you can hear more from those religious leaders on our website at today.com. tomorrow on "do you believe," we'll tackle the question can you be spiritual without being religious? interesting question. savannah? all right, matt thank you so much. well democratic senator elizabeth warren joins us now. she, of course has taken on wall street and now some members of her own party are saying she should run for president against hillary clinton. one of her priorities in office is giving middle-class families a fighting chance which, by the way, is the title of her new memoir which is actually out in paperback. senator warren, good morning. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> now, you didn't think you'd get away with this interview without me asking you point blank, are you going to run for president? >> no. i'm not running and i'm not going to run. you know i'm in washington. i've got this really great job and a chance to try to make a difference on things that really matter. i think we need to lower the interest rate on student loans. i think we need to put more money into medical research. i think that we need to raise the minimum wage. nobody should work full time and still live in poverty. i think we need to strengthen social security and expand its reach. there's a lot to fight over right this minute. >> let me make sure that we underscore this and maybe bold it and put it in all caps because i have to tell you, i have read every single interview you've done in the last year where people asked you, will you run for president? and it had seemed that you were hedging a little bit in the past. i don't hear that hedging now. are you unequivocally and categorically saying i'm not running for president in 2016? >> i'm not running. i'm not running. you know though what i am doing is a set of issues that are powerfully important, and it's a big part of why i wrote this book. >> you care so much about these issues. your supporters say well then you're the person you're the perfect person to go in and fight for them and take them on. they're afraid that hillary clinton won't give voice to these issues that you care about. >> i see it as right this minute we've got a lot of places that we need to be fighting on core issues. like i said, student loans. i've got a student loan bill. it is obscene that the united states government is making a profit off the backs of our kids. and i'll tell you something. that's really personal for me. i'm somebody -- my daddy ended up as a janitor. my mom worked a minimum wage job at sears. the only way i got to go to college is because of a $50 a semester commuter college. and that opened a million opportunities for me. it's something i talk about in the book. what it created for me. so i ended up in the united states senate. i want the same kinds of opportunities for our kids today. i want a world where every kid gets a fighting chance. >> this is something you obviously feel passionate about. you came out of the private sector, came to washington for this purpose. because you care about those issues i have to ask you whether you think hillary clinton as the democratic nominee presumably in 2016 is she the right messenger for that? do you think she will give a credible voice to these issues of whether the middle class is getting a fair shake? >> well i think we need to give her a chance to decide if she's going to run and to declare -- >> we know she's running. we know she's running. >> -- and to lay out what she wants to run on. i think that's her opportunity to do that. but this is really the point. i think that everyone. this is really the point. i admit that everyone needs to be talked about in every race and every part of this country about how it is that we build a future. because right now washington is working great for those who have money and power. it's working great for those who can hire armies of lobbyists and lawyers. it's not working so great for the american people, for real families. that's where we have to make a change. >> possibly i'm beating a dead horse, but did you ever entertain the possibility of running for president? >> here to talk about faith religion, and spirituality. from new york, reverend katherine henderson and professor of religion. such a pleasure to have you with us. let's start off with the question, it seems like more people recognize the need for spirduality. what do you see assed the major change? >> i grew up in an orthodox home and i came back to my home faith. my religion as a duty. it was a media experience. people have an order where god was something they department feel was immediate for them. they shifted towards experience. that was the juice of the religious experience. we don't want the ideas that speak. the spirituality is brigging backed in experience back into the context where it's mored in and more experiencial and more tangible. >> how do you keep them relevant so that they can apply them to modern life? >> well, i think that where i see young people, millennial, the 20 and 30 somethings as well as seasoned leaders, they are often out there on the streets. we have seen not just religion and traditional spaces but people out on the streets. the last time we were together, hussein and i were on a wooden ark at the climate change march. rolling down the street on a flood bed truck. we had an imam and a rabbi and minsters. that's not a joke. we were there together on the ark and it was an intergenerational event. a lot of young people are really looking for meaning and for justice. how are we going to create a world that is a world of human flourishing. >> before we go, whatever the age group what advice tough that applies across the board? how often do you see something like that? >> what's amazing is at auburn seminary where i work, we are a leadership development center. so i have trained more than 5,000 folks. and this kind of coming to a life of meaning wanting to make the world a better place with everything we do there's a trend here. and as a dad who worries about my kid and who worries about the planet, this is very good news. >> i've seen a resurgence of faith among young people today that i haven't seen since the '60s and '70s when the jesus people -- that's what they were called then. is that true in your experience?
