smith. b. smith with style for almost a decade. she was also a famed restaurant tour decorator, author former model. b. smith did it all. so it was a shock to her fans and friends when last year at 65 the one of a kind woman revealed she was battling alzheimer's. i recently sat down with her and her husband for a candid conversation. you look as beautiful if not more beautiful than i have ever seen you. just the position of alzheimer's, what is going on inside as opposed to outside. how do you deal with it b? >> i deal with it in a practical way. i know that i have got a problem. it doesn't make me happy. sometimes it makes me teary. but because i have great support, i'm doing fine. i'm doing really good. >> b started noticing problems with forgetfulness a few years ago. her husband of 23 years also started noticing changes. >> going from being a multitask person to more of a sequential person, which was different. or doing things that were a little out of the ordinary sort of like well, what was that? >> do you remember sitting in that doctor's office and getting that diagnosis? >> yes. i had tears in my eyes. at the same time i said i'm not going to give to it. i'm going to fight. i'm going to fight. >> when you heard this, this is the woman you love and have spent a good part of your life with. what was your reaction? >> well, first of all, you don't believe it. there is total denial. then you go to a point of anger and a point of frustration and sadness. you go to a point where you curse god and say why? she doesn't deserve this. if anybody didn't deserve it, it's this woman. because she's the sweeter human being bar none. there is nothing in her that is mean or conniving or manipulative about her. and you say, why? and then after you curse god, you apologize. >> b and dan decided sharing her alzheimer's diagnosis with the public could bring awareness to the disease. even if at times she struggles to find the right words. >> i want people to know that i have early on set. >> it's tough. >> but i'm going to wash my tears and just continue to go back and be a better person than i have been in the past. >> that includes shooting a public service announcement for the brain health registry who needs more patients for clinical trials for all brain disorders. >> i'm b. smith and i suffer from alzheimer's disease. brain disease affects millions and unfortunately minorities are under represented. >> for b, the struggle continues. she became disoriented and wandered through new york city for over 17 hours. >> i thought i lost her. it was like living in a nightmare but then you are awake. and i just got on my knees and prayed. >> when you finally saw dan and you realized that he was so worried, how did you feel? >> i felt a little bit like a bad girl. a little bit. but i wanted to be free. that's what i wanted. >> kind of a taste of your old life? >> yeah. uh-huh. >> she slept for a day. she slept for 18 hours. 16 or 18 hours. and she had blisters on her feet. >> b. and dan know they will continue to face challenges like these in the future but they try to hold on to the present as much as possible. dan, when you think about b.'s future, what do you think about? >> the first thing is to try to create the best possible moments we can have. if i had to do it over again, i would have been happy for her to choose me as i would have been to choose her. >> it seemed that you are still fighting. >> i am fighting. i'm fighting right now. i will be fighting. >> we will fight. there is only one way. forward. that's it. not an (scal): good day, m'lady! i am sir-can-a-lot, here to save you from another breakfast bore. wake up those eggs with glorious spam! see what spam can! do... at spam.com here's my buddy, wrangler in the orange room. hey, buddy, good to see you. welcome back at 8:43 now with important tax tips to help you save big this year. wean the filing deadline just over a month away new rules and ways to maximize deductions you want to know about. we have a financial editor and let's start with the affordable care act and what people need to know. >> the affordable care act, big news this year. this is the first year you basically say you have coverage or face a penalty. so while you are filling out your taxes, you're going to have to check a box if you have coverage through your employer or through the exchange. if you didn't you have to fill out a form. it's a new form number 8965. basically either says i am exempt or have to pay a penalty. $95 per adult, $4750 a kid. up to $285 a family. >> that's the tax credit. >> tax credit is the way to make tax credit more affordable. if you claim your credit, you claim it when you bought your policy. or you will do it now with another form 8962. and you're basically going to say, here i'm eligible for this. >> every year we are told to use the money in our flexible accounts on else you may lose it. >> right. but this year you may not use it. they can allow them to roll over $500 for next year. check with your benefits department to see if they allow you to do that. if your company slides the deadline a bit to march 15th it gives you two days to use up the money in your flexible spending account. you can buy stuff like this which many people don't think qualifies, stuff like a first-aid kit. there's a website called fsastore.com. >> you can have a lot of fun with that money. >> vitamins. >> tax tips and grabbing every deduction every year. >> right and often you have to itemize to get the deductions. if you itemize, you can write off state income or sales tax. many people look at this and say, of course state income tax is the no-brainer. it's not if like many people you bought a car or some other purchase last year. in that case state sales tax may win out because you can add that big amount of tax to your deduction. >> right. >> so look for that. >> what if you are out of a job and looking for work. can you deduct that? >> 2013 was a great year to find a job, which means many people are eligible to deduct their job hunting expenses. you have to have been looking in the same field in which you were originally working. and it goes under the category of miscellaneous expenses. so it's your job, if your expenses came together to be 2% of your income and you itemized you can write it off. >> i have to get to that one. avoiding an audit. >> make sure you report all of your income. many people are freelancers and that means they have a stack of 1099s and a couple of w-2s as well. all of the income has to match or they will send you a letter. >> reading about the scams out there. how can you report? >> file as soon as possible. the scam that we are seeing is people's tax refunds are being swiped. it's a form of identity theft. >> how? >> it's a form of identity theft. someone gets your social security number and files a tax refund in your name. we are seeing it in particular with the state. they are filing as if they were you and grabbing your refund. if you get a notice from the irs that someone else filed under your social security number call the police and file a police report. let the i.r.s. know and let the credit reports know and put a freeze on your credit. >> good information. great to see you. >> you, too. up next who is getting creamed? why the pies are about to start flying on the plaza. but first, this is "today" on nbc. >> yeah. she had gotten on the jittany and came in to see her doctor a bus, from the hamptons to manhattan. the bus was not supposed to -- she got put on by dan's daughter to come back to the hamptons. the bus was not supposed to make any stops between manhattan and south hampton. unfortunately, it made a stop at 40th and 3rd. she got off, wandered the streets and took the staten island ferry, sang and danced with people and ended up at a diner near their home. luckily, one of their friends recognized her and -- can we just roll it back a second. i don't have it here. we want to mention that maria shriver has a alzheimer's campaign with the alzheimer's association and a nonprofit with women's nation which maria founded. so they are working together. >> al such a powerful interview. go online to watch it. >> yes. it's amazing. meanwhile, al, let's take a look outside at the weather. >> is it raining pies?
