there were plenty of surprises as well. ruling the roost, "birdman" took the night's top honors. winning best picture, begs original screen play, and best director. the film star michael keaton spoke after the the best picture win. >> great to be here, who am i kidding. this is great fun. >> but the legendary actor came up empty in his first ever oscar nomination. >> this is my career. >> instead the top acting award to two performances about crippling diseases. >> wow. >> "the theory of everything" eddie redmayne best actor. >> i'm fully aware i am a lucky, lucky man. >> for his complex portrayal of steven hawking during his decades long struggle with ala. julianne moore her 1st oscar for portraying a woman fighting early onset alzheimer's. >> this is no such thing as best actress as my fellow nominees. >> patricia arquette received one of the biggest ovation, not for her achievement but her message while accepting the oscar for best supporting actress. >> equal rights for women in the united states of america. >> and j.k. simmons rounds out the winners taking best supporting actor for portrayal of a brutal music instructor. he had a softer tone in his speech. >> call your high notes lady gaga teamed up with surprise guest julie andrews. and a moving performance of glory from "selma" brought the crowd to tears and their feet. rookie host neil patrick harris brought the curtain up and stripped down to make his first gig a memorable one. >> i first of all neil patrick harris is ripped and as the guts of ten men, i thought that performance of "glory" was amazing. >> the tears in the audience watching was so powerful. >> what stood out to you? >> definitely the six-pack on neil patrick harris. >> i thought he did a good job with the opening act as well. it was strong celebrating hollywood and movies. >> the music was tremendous from lady gaga to the point about "glory" shutting down the house. that ovation you could feel it watching it. it was incredible. >> we'll have much more on the oscars including some of the social messables that seemed to dominate the evening, and of course a lot of the fashions on display as well. we'll talk about those as well. >> we've got a lot of news to get to. there is heightened security at the busiest mall, the mall of america. and this comes after threats of violence at major shopping centers by the terror group behind a deadly attack in africa. let's get to kristen welker in bloomington, minnesota with the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. the mall of america is one of the busiest shopping centers in the world and this morning officials here are working around the clock to make sure the public is safe. several law enforcement officials say people should continue to go shopping, still they are calling for extra vigilance as this terror threat put this community and the nation on alert. heightened security this morning at the iconic mall of america in the wake of a video released by the somali terrorist group al shabab talking for attacks against malls specifically naming this one. the group has claimed responsibility for the 2013 terrorist attack against the westgate maul in kenya where more than 60 people were killed. >> terrorists like al shabab look for soft targets like the west gate mall. they can cause a lot of death and get a lot of attention. >> reporter: the department of homeland security says it's not aware of any specific credible plot against the mall of america, or any other shopping center in this country. johnson is calling for public vigilance. >> i'm not telling people to not go to the mall. i think that there needs to be awareness, there needs to be vigilance. >> reporter: a senior obama official says so far al shabab has not shown an ability to major operations outside east africa. the still the group hopes to m speier lone wolf operatives. >> al shabab doesn't have the great capability to direct it themselves what they hope for is inspired actors around the world to do their bidding for them. >> reporter: al shabab has been aggressively recruiting westerners including in minneapolis, a city that has a large somali population. the clock is ticking as congress is in a bitter battle over how to fund dhsf. congress can't resolve differences by friday the agency which oversees much of the security operations will run out of funding. matt, back to you in los angeles. >> kristen welker at the mall of america, thanks so much. millions of people across the south are dealing with an icy commute this morning as yet another storm rolls through. after a brief warm-up, over the weekend temperatures are now plunging once again. the weather channel's mike seidel is in dallas. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. not a great way to start off a week, yet another winter storm, this one dumped over a foot of snow in colorado, here in dallas/ft. worth we had freezing rain, a lot of sleet and even snow. almost nonexistent rush hour and the threat for ice moves into the deep south later on today. across north texas, including here in dallas, hazardous roads making it tough for commuters this morning. overnight crews were pretreating roads and cautioning travelers. meanwhile, parts of tennessee were glazed over by a rare southern ice storm. followed by high winds. >> the wind was going so hard. >> reporter: snapping tree limbs and leaving tens of thousands without power. >> it sounded like gun shots. it was popping noises, then you would hear it hit the ground. the big whoosh. >> reporter: at least 22 were killed in tennessee half due to hypothermia. heavy snow was caving in rooftops across new england, like most of the northeast, philadelphia's roads are covered in slush. >> streets are very slippery. >> reporter: homes dressed in ice. >> want to be a snow man. >> she wants to see the frozen house. >> reporter: most of the country is either digging out or bracing for another storm, looking for light at the end of the tunnel. in boston they have been buried under 99.9 inches of snow. and they are there eight inches from the all-time seasonal snowfall record. back here at dfw international airport airlines have canceled more than 1,000 flights and highs today in the 20s. the average high for this date is 62 degrees here in dallas. al. >> that's right. it's a bad situation, mike. it's just going to get worse. in fact, as we look now you can see the icing starting to push into the dallas/ft. worth area. it is going to be a real mess coming in. in fact, we expect to see significant icing later on today. the 32-degree line. winter storm warnings, thunderstorms as well. and as the morning wears on into the afternoon that pushes into parts of arkansas, louisiana, on into mississippi and alabama. look at the ice amounts we're talking, a quarter inch of ice to a tenth of an inch, that is significant icing we're going to watch. other part of this, the cold air that's going to be funneling in. the polar jet stream really taking off and pushing down to the south. as it does, we are going to see temperatures start to drop. so these are current temperatures. minneapolis, it feels like 11 below. 15 below in chicago, 9 below in columbus, 12 in bowling and buffalo feels like 20 below. temperatures right now are as high as they are going to get. look at what happens during the afternoon as we see temperatures start to plummet and they keep dropping right on into tomorrow morning when the bottom drops out we're looking at single digits in the northeast, record to near-record lows. savannah, tamron, natalie, we have cold air and a reinforcing shot of cold air on wednesday. >> we needed that rain. al, we'll catch up with you. natalie's here with the news and it's good to mention this fight over funding for dhs. >> the president is meeting with the nation's governors at the white house days before the department of homeland security budget is set to run out. homeland security secretary jeh johnson laid out the implications of a looming shutdown for the governors on sunday. 30,000 would be furloughed if funding runs out this week. the rest required to show up without pay. the budget standoff around the president's executive action on immigration. at least 11 students at wesleyan university in connecticut were hospitalized sunday after apparently overdosing on a drug known as molly. two students are in critical condition and two are in serious condition. school officials say the students took the drug on saturday night. >> a happy ending for some girl scouts in california after someone ripped the cash box out of their hands and took off. it happened outside of a grocery store where the girl scouts were selling cookies. police say a man walked up, snatched the box that had about $600 in it and ran away. 10 minutes later one of the moms saw him get into a car, she wrote down his license plate, police caught the man and the scouts eventually got their money back. police even then ended up buying the rest of the cookies. so good happy ending to that story. >> wow. okay. >> thank you. let's send it back out to al in los angeles. >> hey, let's take a look what else is going on around the country. you can see that ice storm is a big swath of problems. we've also got wet weather making its way through southern california, beautiful in the pacific northwest. the mid to upper 50s. chilly conditions here, there, in the northeast. we're going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds. 7:13 good monday morning to you pipe' meteorologist christina loren. big difference in temperatures between san martin and san francisco, a 20-degree difference that has everything to do with where the wind is. we're getting that fierce wind in san francisco, anywhere between 13 to 17 miles per hour sustained. meanwhile no wind in san martin letting the cold dense air settle in. wind advisories should expire by 10:00 a.m. temps in the mid-50s by noon, mid-60s to finish off the day. >> and that's your latest weather. >> now to the first part of our exclusive interview with the family of kayla mueller. the american hostage who died while in the hands of isis. the family had to keep quiet during her captivity, hoping it would keep kayla alive. her parents marcia and karl and brother eric are speaking out. >> i'm still in denial. i expect her to come through the door. >> i hope i never forget that everything happens for a reason. >> kayla mueller was passionate and fearless and tomorrowed to go to turkey's border to help. >> were you afraid? >> i you saw such a joy in her with helping. it was something she was called to do. a long time ago i accepted they can't control my kids. i have to put her in god's hands and let him take care of her. >> it was her passion. it was us her friends and close friends. didn't matter. >> you knew what a dangerous place this was? >> oh, yes. >> she worked for support to life, helping refugee families. >> did you know she was planning to go to syria? >> no. >> what do you think you would have thought? >> as her mother i wouldn't have let her go. i would have talked with her. >> unbenounced to them when her syrian boyfriend was called to help a doctors without borders hospital, she insisted on coming along and days later her parents got the call they feared most. >> it was 5:00 on august 5th. they said she had been detained because of support to life and they were sure it would be okay. that's basically what they said. she was detained, but not to worry. parquet>> kayla was in the custody of isis, then hardly known. >> when did you realize how serious this was? >> that day really. >> after that first call. they not only took our daughter but a year and a half 18 months of her life. >> there came a time where i understand you heard from her captors. what can you tell me about what they said? >> they gave us her full name and said she was with them and she was their prisoner and told us what we needed to do to get her home. >> i feel we had a chance to get kayla out. we were in communications with them unlike the other families. how do you raise $6.2 million? it pretty much made it impossible. we feel they did want to release kayla. >> unable to raise the money and barred them from paying a ransom in any event, they can only watch as the other hostages were brutally executed one by one. >> how did you handle such a thing? >> i thought and prayed that she would be freed. >> do you feel the government did enough to help her? >> i think they wanted to but i think again the policy and i don't think anyone had any idea this group would be as powerful as they were. they just thought of them as a gang or thugs. but again, it goes back to we are so isolated in america. we are so in our own little area that we don't see what's going on over there during this time. >> the u.s. traded five taliban for bo berg dal. >> the whole situation, the demands got greater and larger and they realized they had something and if they are going to lead five people go for one person, why won't they do this or that? >> did you feel why that trade is okay and something similar is not okay for kayla? >> actually we asked the president that question when we were in the white house. that was pretty hard to take. >> earlier this month, the muellers's worst fears were realized. isis claimed kayla had been killed in a jordanian air strike. >> did you hope against hope that somehow it wasn't true? >> yes. >> that's all that group does is lie. they lie and it's a propaganda thing. they try to push their agenda. we had faith. >> ultimately you were given some kind of proof so that you knew. >> uh-huh. publicly we asked for them. they should have told us rather than tell the world. they should have told us. we asked that they knew how to message us. to message us. and they did. >> you are always learning about yourself through other people. >> she was loving. she was joyful she was peaceful. >> kayla taught us so much. and i think that's what i will remember about kayla being our little girl. >> now the muellers are devoted to continuing kayla's work. >> we want the world to help us let kayla still use her hands to give to the world and to help the people that are suffering. especially the syrian people right now. they have been through so much. that's what kayla's heart is right now. >> they are an extraordinary family who dealt with something with extraordinary grace. >> why she was such a special young woman as well. incredible. >> we have so much more to talk about. next hour we will tell you about how kayla is honoring her. what they believe about how she was treated in isis custody and they shirt with us something special and dear the last letter kayla wrote from captivity. a lot of people asked was it naive of her to travel to that region? we will have the family's response and more of the interview including the response to disturbing reports that kayla may have been forced to marry an isis fighter in captivity. we will talk about that with the series of early morning car fires in camp bell may have been intentionally set. all three cars burned in the parking lot of an apartment complex near winchester boulevard. investigators do not believe the fires are connected to similar car fires in the south bay just a few months ago. one man is under arrest accused of stealing money from a girl scout troupe. the girls were selling cookies in front of a san jose satisfyfeway when someone ran up swiped the cash and took off. 23-year-old cody gintz later came back to the parking lot to get his car. officers got his license plate, nab himd and a cash pot containing more than $100. the oakland coliseum commission is apparently on the clock tweb comes to a new raiders stadium deal. the proposed shared stadium in southern california may be the best game plan if progress on a new bay area stadium does not have one within the next month. coliseum leaders fear new issues over public money for a stadium may be insurmountable. we want to check >> it's a campaign to encourage reporters on ask women more than who are you wearing? i think her point is that she wanted to be more about your brain than what you look like. >> what about julianne moore?
