morning. welcome to "today" on friday morning i'm matt lauer with tamron hall. savannah and al are in phoenix getting ready for super bowl xlix. savannah, what's with the down coat. is it that cold out there? >> it's not that cold. it's rainy. i can't believe it. >> it's chilly. you can see your breath. it's been raining unusually wet. >> yes. >> so you are well within your rights. >> the weather is a little bit i guess leaving a little to be desired. >> and we've been taking turns washing watching the footballs for the nfl. >> is so i won't get fined. >> apparently not. >> al, we've got a big storm out east. >> we do. and that's our top story. we've got another snowstorm that is going to blanket the northeast. as you take a look we're watching this, and it is going to be bringing a real mess. and then there's a second storm coming back in. the rain that's here is going to make its way across the country causing major problems. >> we've got dylan dreyer in stanford, maine. good morning. what do you see? >> reporter: i'm seeing more snow, savannah. that's on top of the 32 1/2 inches of snow this area picked up from the blizzard. that's the highest total all across the state of maine. now, i started off the week with my yard stick. it was too big to measure the 2 inches in pittsburgh but now it's not each close to being big enough to measure these mounds of snow piling u. crews have been working around the clock to just put the snow anywhere they cap. the mountains are grow, and storm weary residents and crews have another six to 12 inches of snow to deal with. i couldn't have done this week without the blue mobile. we started in pittsburgh earlier on monday when the storm was in its infancy. we met up with the blue mobile to get us through the snowy streets of boston. my crew got us to nantucket amend here we are in stanford, maine. new storm, more snow. matt. >> dylan, thank you. meantime, the fate of two isis hostages uncertain this morning, a day after a deadline passed for a prisoner swap to secure their freedom. nbc's bill neely is in amman, jordan. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. i'm outside japan's embassy in jordan where the vigil, the wait continues. two nations a world apart but yew united in horror at this hostage crisis. anger and anguish in jordan, no deal for their hostage, for his family it's overwhelming. they are desperate for the life of this pilot to be spared. the terror group isis which is holding him says it will, if this woman is freed. she's a failed suicide bomber on jordan's death row. but it's threatening to kill this japanese journalist if the deal isn't done. the deadline at this border crossing has passed, jordan is demanding proof from the terrorists. >> we have asked for a proof of life and we have not received anything as of yet. >> reporter: japan is in shock, isis has killed one japanese hostage already, the mother of the latest kenji goto pleaded for her son as did his wife. >> i fear that this is the last chance for my husband. i hope our oldest daughter who is just 2 will get to see her father again. >> reporter: japan says it won't do deals with terrorists, but it's clear jordan is ready to swap for thepy lot. she was part of a gang that killed 60 people ten years ago. her suicide belt failed to detonate. this is an ordeal for the pilot's family as the sun set deadline was followed by silence. and still no word this morning from the kidnappers, isis, japan and jordan say they are working closely and round the clock to find out what on earth is happening with the lives of their hostages are still hanging in the balance. >> bill, thank you very much. excruciating for the families. now to a story out of los angeles overnight. a deadly hit-and-run involving notorious rap mogul suge knight. betty nguyen is here with the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. knight is no stranger to run-ins with the police. he is under arrest on suspicion of murder. >> what was the fight about? can you say anything about the allegations against you? >> reporter: suge knight surrendered for questioning this morning after allegedly running two men over with his truck, injuring one and killing the other. authorities claim that the mogul plowed into a group of people in compton thursday, shortly after an argument. >> it looks like he drove backwards and struck the victims and went forward and struck them again. >> reporter: his truck was found in an empty parking lot. >> people we talked to said it looked intentional so we're handling it as a homicide. >> reporter: his attorney says his client was being attacked and in an effort to escape he hit two other people. >> there is an investigation going on. let the sheriff's department conduct their investigation. >> reporter: suge knight is known for cofounding death row records in 1991, one of the biggest hip-hop label, launching the careers of popular rappers like snoop dogg. he has a history of legal troubles. he served for years for violating probation from a previous assault, returning to prison again in 2003 for assaulting a parking lot attendant. just last year he survived being shot multiple times a it a hollywood nightclub, if if convicted in this latest incident suge knight could face up to 30 years in prison. authorities say the hit yamd run happened after a shoot for an upcoming movie. still no details on what started the argument. >> betty, thank you. there's new information this morning on the measles outbreak tied to disney theme parks in california. more cases are diagnosed, health officials believe they know how this began. dr. natalie azar is a news contributor. they say this was probably brought to the united states by a foreign tourist who went to the theme park and then spread the virus. why is that significant? >> i don't know how much it's going to -- we can't close our borders, we're not going to have the same conversation as with ebola. this is issue is that internationally we are certainly seeing much lower vaccination rates than we're seeing here. we said from the beginning that our outbreaks in this country are due to two things, importing these cases from abroord as well as our non-vaccination rates. >> it's prompted dramatic action from a doctor in california who says he will no longer treat any patients at his practice who have not been vax nalted for measles. he says this, quote. parents who choose not to give measles shots they are not just putting their kids at risk, they are putting other kids at risk especiallien my waiting room. howe do you 2350e8? >> it's a very inflammatory comment. legally we are bound to treat patients and we can't discriminate on the basis of philosophical or religious beliefs, that is my first comment. his concern about saying that these unvaccinated children could potentially expose other people in the practice, is incredibly important and valid. so i think this opens up a discussion and i think it's something that the medical community as a whole is going to have to grapple with. >> a lot are going to talk about this. before i let you go there are face caises in phoenix where the super bowl is. should people be concerned if they are going? >> if you are unvax nalted you better think twice about going. what is a wha a measle virus loves, a lot of people in close quarters, this is exactly the kind of atmosphere that a virus can spread. if you have young children and not vaccinated you have to stay home. obviously this applies to adults as wet. we get more emotional when it comes to children. people have to be aware. they are making preparations, they say we have measles outposts and looking for people who might have the tell tale rash, et cetera. it's a big deal. >> natalie azar, thanks so much. good to see you. >> natalie is only assignment. tamron is in with the headlines. >> good morning. the taliban is claiming responsibility for an attack in which a gunman shot and killed three american contractors and one afghan man. it happened thursday in military section of the kabul airport. the taliban fighter wore an afghan police uniform and infiltrated the ranks of afghan forces to stage that attack. >> a showdown on capitol hill thursday after some protesters interrupted a hearing, just before former secretary of state henry kissinger was to testify about global challenges. >> arrest henry kissinger for war crimes. >> the disruption lasted about two minutes. officers led them away. senator mccain apologized to kissinger and lashed out. >> you know, you're going to have to shut up or i'm going to have you arrested. if we can't get the capitol hill police in here, immediately. get out of here you low life scum. >> the incident raised questions how the demonstrators could get so close to kissinger without being stopped by security or police. >> some tense moments on a boston commuter train thursday after a train car filled up with smoke. cell phone video shows a man smashing a train window and several passengers climbing out. apparently they had trouble getting the door open, the transit authority blamed the smoke on a propulsion system failure and there was no cause for kernel or danger. >> a jockey is facing felony charges accused of zapping a horse with a buzzer during a race. officials say it happened earlier this month at the sam houston race park in texas, 43-year-old roman chapa won the race. it looks like he is holding something in his left hand. buzzers are used to send an electrical shock through the horse making the animal run faster. if convicted chapa faces up to ten years in jail. >> a happy ending this morning for a koala bear we told you about earlier this month. the bear nicknamed jeremy, he gained attention after being pictured receiving treatment for his burned paws. he made a full recovery and released back in the wild. jeremy was injured in a bush fire. a photograph of him lying with all four paws soaked in a medical solution was shared on social media. matt, as you well know there was a campaign to knit gloves or other koalas but he is better and back in the wild. >> that's a good outcome. >> it is. >> the cutest ugliest things in the world. they are really kult. >> until you realize they are wild. >> thank you very much. back out to al in phoenix, mr. roker. >> hey, well, we've got this storm system that's causing rain here in phoenix. it's going to spread across the country. here's where it starts off. we've got wet weather today in to friday through saturday as it makes its way we're watching rain and then icy mix develop, from st. louis, chicago, spreads to snow, cleveland by sunday morning we are looking at this spreading into new york. sunday afternoon it makes its way further to the east, and we are talking generally by sunday night about 3 to 9 inches of snow that will continue into monday into the northeast with some places
