Will the company get out of the dog house today wednesday, january 28th, 2015. Announcer from nbc news this is today with matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning. Welcome to today on wednesday morning. Matts got the morning off. Got the shovel out. A lot of snow at his house. Check out marshfield, massachusetts. Weve seen images. Look at this. Storm surge, the waves froze on the homes and the trees. Waves coming over the homes and into the street ahead. Thats amazing. The storm and its aftermath our top story. The impact of what ended up being a record setting storm in parts of new england. To dylan dreyer, shes in marshfield about 30 miles south of boston along the coast. Dylan, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, savannah and man, are we happy thats over. New england took it on the chin with this one with Tropical Storm force winds and feet of snow. In marshfield we saw the storm damage these homes and now in ice. As the Atlantic Ocean came crashing in and flooded these streets at high tide, all of the water now is frozen in place. The blizzard of 2015 is for the record books. Under siege by the ocean, the storm surge punching out a 50foot hole in the sea wall in marshfield, massachusetts, one of several communities at the mercy of the tide. It makes sense to get out and to a safe shelter. Reporter hard to find shelter on an island. Nantucket battered by winds 80 miles per hour. Virtually everything we had has failed including as of right now our 911 is not working. It was stated by one individual we had to revert back to 1950 technology to stay in touch. Reporter people across new england call this blizzard wicked and not in a good way. Snow everywhere, nearly 3 feet in places not counseleding the mounds created by plows. If a car wont get you there a snowmobile will do the job. The storm that slammed new england pummeled eastern long island. But the main punch of the storm only glajsed new york city and northern new jersey. The statue of liberty watched the blizzard come and go. Some people felt the same. Couldnt have been worse. We got off easy. Reporter a forecaster with the National Weather service apologized tweeting he made a lot of tough decisions expecting us to get it right and we didnt. Once again im sorry. A city shut down, businesses and Public Transportation closed. Add in the cost of snow removal one expert estimated 1 billion in losses across the northeast. But its not all about dollars and cents. As the snow piled up, so did the images of the storm on social media, people sharing the amazing views from a romp in the snow on video to a moment of sheer joy frozen in time. These homes also frozen in time here in marshfield. Yesterday, just about everything, ever where, was shut down. In crew hardy new england fashion we saw a Dunkin Donuts truck making a delivery this morning and in this area thats always a good sign. They are running on dunkin. Thank you so much. William pittman is the chief of police on nantucket. Good morning to you. Good morning. I guess the first question is how is it that youre able to talk to us . As i understand it power was cut off to much of the island. Well, were back on line, were back in the 21st century, i guess. And what is the situation there . How are folks dealing with it . Its a tiny island and bore the brunt of this storm. Its amazing how people do here. You know, everybody pitches in, everybody does something, they have got a plow on the truck they use it, if they have got a house thats warm they let the neighbors join them. You know, it does very well in a storm like this. This was a tough one, it was the worst ive seen in the ten years i lived here. I know you had to use the school as a shelter, the hospital lost power for a while. And i understand actually during the height of the storm there was a baby born. Yes. Actually i think there were four of them potentially going to be born. We were a little concerned about that because theres no way to get off island if something would have went wrong. And how are you doing today . Now its the cleanup begins, the sun comes out hopefully, you are able to assess the damage. Are you getting what you need . How bad do you think this will be . I think were going to find a lot of damage on the erosion area on the east coast of the island and probably the south shore. Down town i know weve got some structures that are having issues. The water was up to their foundations, so maybe even higher. Our building commissioner is going to be down there at sunup starting his inspection. Food service establishments, Grocery Stores were without power for a long time, thats going to require the Health Department and those folks to make sure food is still safe. So were not out of the woods yet but were headed there. Were sending our best to you, chief, and all of the people of nantucket. Thank you so much. Thank you. We didnt have time to ask the chief to expun knowledge your record when you were 19 and a little incident. I wish you were kidding but youre not. It was not chief pittman who made the arrest. Thats all behind us. Lets turn the page, though, al. Lets talk about some of the forecasting. For the storm, obviously this storm took a turn no one predicted. We actually did see this in a sense coming, if you want, we actually said anywhere between 9 and 18 inches of snow. Well, we ended up getting almost 10 inches at central park and 12 inches at laguardia airport. But, the bulk of it was on the island and as you moved up into new england. And the american model actually handled this better than the european model. So, nobody likes to be wrong, we didnt get three feet of snow in the city but i think we saw a lot of people make the right decision to shut things down and in fact, mayor de blasio is coming up to talk about it. What do you think of the meteorologists in the Weather Service apologizing . I think he felt a lot of pressure and nobody likes to be wrong, and i think he stepped up and said hey, we blew it. Were human and were going to try to do better which we all feel in the weather business. Thankfully many were safe in the storm. Thats the bottom line. Obviously the airlines were scrambling now to deal with the backlog of canceled flights. More than 7700 over two days, tom costello back at laguardia airport. Good morning. Reporter willie, the good news its open. Boston to philly, weve got 650 cancellations today alone, here at laguardia the cancellations are mostly on the departing flights, because the planes arent here yet. System wide for the airlines this is really going to be a day of recovery. With the snow cleared out, the ramps and runways in new york back in business overnight. But inside the terminal, it was still dead quiet. Cynthia spent the a second night on the cots anxious to get home to the bahamas. I doze off. Dont sleep soundly by no stretch of the imagination. After a whiteout as boston logan and digging out in the northeast the airlines say this morning they will be back in the air. Once it stopped its not like a light switch. You cant just turn it back on. It has to go through a process. More than 7500 cancellations have passengers stranded across the country. Frustrating. Even in chicago. Im a little frustrated. I want to get home in my own bed. The passengers stranded on that Virgin Atlantic flight at jfk monday night cant wait to get out. Among them photographer felix koonce. Passengers being mostly british, all that, quite optimistic, not much yelling. At Laguardia Cynthia also doesnt care much for yelling or snow for that matter. I think so. And the quote that is better in the bahamas has really proven to be true. I can testify to that. It may really be better in the bahamas. Simt it always better in the bahamas. One quick update on amtrak. 720,000 people ride the northeast corridor. Guy, back to you. The bahamas sound pretty good right about now. Thanks, tom. This morning the fbi is investigating another round of online threats against airlines, all posted tuesday night. Including one targeting delta flights. Two others landed shortly after, and another had yet to depart. All six arrived safely. Its just the latest in a series of online threats against airlines this week. Five other flights made emergency landings over the weekend after similar threats were posted on twitter. Two of the planes were headed to seattle. This is the first time ive been in a situation you had two aircraft fairly close in arrival time for them to be considered a security situation. Another one of the threats prompted f16 fighter jets to escort two planes to safety in atlanta. All those were later cleared of security concerns. And arrived safely at their destination. While Security Experts say the ip address of the twitter user can be tracked they do have to take each one of these seriously and respond accordingly. Savannah, willie, back to you. Thank you. Peter alexander has the latest. Good morning. Reporter willie, good morning. Four days until the super bowl. Im already hoors. The debate boils down to one thing. Whether you believe that a locker Room Attendant could have intentionally deflated a dozen patriots footballs in 90 seconds or less in the least likely of places. The big es story in football may come down to a bathroom break. Nbc sports is confirming that the nfl interviewed a patriots locker Room Attendant about deflategate. A source says footage captured that attendant taking both team footballs the in a private bathroom for about 90 seconds before bringing them onto the field. 90 seconds seems more than enough in a bag that zips open if you have the needle. Reporter as the game inches closer so do plans for post game celebrations including Vince Wilfork who got cornered by the daughter of a teammate. A question for you. Go ahead. Are you guys going to take me to disney world if you win . For you, yes. Sometimes you got to have a secret weapon to get some of the players to open up. She was a cutie. All the talk about deflategate focus really is going to be on security. The secretary of Homeland Security jay john so will get a look at the venue with the chief Security Officer to see the precautions in place for the biggest game in america. Back to you.
