"today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> and good morning. welcome to "today" on a wednesday morning. >> we have a new member of our team, he is hafry and has bad breath. a puppy. we'll tell you about that. >> an interesting story. let's start on a wednesday morning with our top story. defiant "charlie hebdo" releases its first issue since that terror attack. with the cartoon of the prophet muhammad on the cover. nbc's chief global correspondent bill neely is in paris. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning from paris, at this time almost exactly a week ago a dozen people lay dead in and around the offices of a magazine the terrorists tried to kill it off. this morning, "charlie hebdo" is back on the streets again seemingly stronger than ever. it looks like all paris wants to buy it. it's a satirical magazine that used to sell 50,000 copies a week. today the first of three million copies hit the street making it for this week not only the world's most famous newspaper but one of the best selling. on its cover which nbc news is not showing, a cartoon of a tearful prophet muhammad. they waited for it through the night, it sold out quickly. >> i tried to buy "charlie hebdo." but no charlie. it disappeared rapidly. >> reporter: this was the scene outside the magazine exactly a week ago. new video shows the kouachi brothers reloading. the police confront them, then reverse. one brother firing on the move, within seconds they would kill a policeman at point blank range. he was buried yesterday, a muslim policeman distraught relatives comforted by the french president after a massacre now claimed by al qaeda in yemen. in a new video they say they ordered the men to avenge insults against the prophet muhammad. in the french parliament lawmakers sang their national anthem and passed new laws to combat islamists. joining the debate a dutch muslim mayor who had a message for fellow immigrants. >> if you don't like western freedoms or cartoonists he says, just pack your bags and get out. in paris thousands of troops and police remain on high alert on the streets, too, three million copies of a provocative magazine. the massacre was a week ago but the grieving goes on. one of the cartoonists was laid to rest this morning, but the magazine is very much alive, 3 million copies printed and sold, 2 million more ordered in numerous languages, the cartoonists say it's a triumph for free speech. matt. >> bill neely live for us in paris, thank you very much. >> learning more this morning about a strange story closer to home. ohio man who has been indicted for threatening to kill house speaker john boehner. pete williams has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. u.s. capitol police say the man was a bartender at a country club, they say he talked about poisoning or even shooting the speaker for being responsible for the ebola epidemic. investigators say the man tended bar at a country club in suburban cincinnati where speaker john boehner was a member. they say in late october the man, michael r. hotel told police that boehner got him fired from his job. he told police that he was jesus christ and boehner was the devil and responsible for the ebola outbreak. investigators say hoyte told them after he was fired he heard voices on his car radio telling him that speaker baseballer was evil. police say hoyte also told them he had handgun at home which they confiscated. and they say his mother was worried about him in late october and took an assault rifle from the house. investigators say he e-mailed the speaker's wife debby, that if he really wanted to hurt him he could have poisoned his wine many times. >> the authorities would like him off the streets and get him under a course of medication and doctor's care again to help him get past these thoughts, these ideas of hurting someone. >> reporter: in mid december a judge ordered hoyte to undergo a psychiatric examination at a federal prison facility in massachusetts. no response from the lawyer appointed to represent him. if the government proceeds to trial, hoyte would face a maximum sentence of 10 years if convicted. boehner's office says only that he is grateful to the authorities for their efforts. >> pete williams in washington, thank you. >> the iowa ka discusses, the race for the white house is seemingly heating up on the republican side. there are reports that new jersey's governor chris christie is preparing to set up a political action committee. and he is far from alone. peter alexander in washington for us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning. here we go again. sources close to chris christie tell nbc news nothing is set in stone about setting up a political action committee but he seems interested. tuesday christie at times sound like he'd rather give a state of the union than state of the state. >> a shared -- >> reporter: that escalated quickly. the republican field appears to be filling up. >> we are a nation beset by anxiety. >> reporter: during his state of the state address christie seemed to target a wider audience than those in new jersey. >> we need a new jersey renewal, and we need an american renewal. >> reporter: attending this unexpected guest t protester who heckled christie at an event last fall. >> sit down and shut up. >> reporter: this time no confrontation. the 2016 field is shaping up to be both crowded and unpredictable with mitt romney apparently back on board even after two losing campaigns. adviser tells nbc news i'd be surprised if he didn't run. and romney is set to speak at a committee meeting in san diego this week. a romney reboot could put him on a crash course with jeb bush exploring his own white house bid. >> it would be messy, more about whose turn is it. romney or bush. rather than who is more conservative. >> reporter: does romney deserve another chance? >> it's a very open process. may the best person win. >> reporter: kentucky senator rand paul says the party needs to move beyond romney. >> i think he had his chance. >> reporter: likely joining wisconsin governor scott walker, ted cruz, and former arkansas governor mike huckabee moving conservatives with his new book, skewing the first family's parenting skills and accusing jay-z of crossing the line from husband to pimp when it comes to his wife beyonce. neither beyonce nor jay-z or the white house has responded to the comments. as for mitt romney he is speaking on board a retired aircraft carrier in the san diego bay. >> peter alexander, thanks. >> natalie is here with an emergency on the international space station. >> right. good morning. the crew of the international space station had to take emergency precautions this morning after alarms went off on the american side of the station. tom costello covers nasa. he is in washington. what's the latest? >> reporter: nasa is stressing everyone on board is safe but out of abundance of caution all six crew members moved to the russian side of the station, out of fear of a possible ammonia leak. earlier this morning an alarm went off on the american side of the station. mission control reports it saw an increase in water loob pressure and increase in cabin pressure which could indicate an ammonia leak, something very serious. all crew were told to don oxygen masks. they since removed the masks, nasa now says this could be a false alarm, mission control is trouble shooting. natalie. >> tom costello following the breaking news. thank you. >> a big discovery overnight in the search for wreckage of airasia flight 8501. the fuselage has been locate. singapore's defense minister said the words on the side of the wreckage confirm that it is the plane. the airasia flight crashed as it was traveling to singapore with 162 people on board. >> utah police are calling it a good call in more ways than one. a 3-year-old boy was able to help police locate him after his mother's car was stolen while he was still sitting inside the car. a daily routined turned into a night more after a thief stole her car with her 3-year-old son inside. elizabeth says she was dropping her brother off at daycare when she went back outside, her car which she left unlocked and running being driven away with her son strapped in the back seat. >> may baby's in there. what if he throws my baby out. >> reporter: police learned that she had left her cell phone in the car. officer smith dialed her number. >> and he called hoping to get somebody. >> 3-year-old aiden answered the call. >> he knows my pass ward. >> after the thief abandoned the car an officer instructed the child to honk the horn until someone found him. police located the vehicle. >> you told them what you did, did you honk the horn? you did? >> she is thankful that her son is a cell phone savvy toddler. >> i'm glad we found him as fast as we did. >> the suspect likely took off when the child answered the phone in the back seat. police are still looking for the suspect. >> facebook is planning to post amber alerts. the media giant is teaming wake-up the national center for missing and exploited children so when a child is abducted users in the area will see the alert on their news feed. they will contain a photo and link to the missing child's poster that they can then share with friends. >> a teenager is called a hero this morning for helping save the life of a police officer who went into cardiac arrest. jamal rutledge was charged with criminal mischief and burglary when an officer fell to the ground in the ft. lauderdale jail. rutledge got up to see what was wrong and then started kicking the security fence and yelling for help. other officers were able to restart his heart. rutledge and the officers will be honored at a commission meeting next week. good for him. >> thank you. hello, mr. roker. it's chilly. >> we've got freezing rain going on down south along the mid-atlantic states and snow making its way as far as cape may, new jersey. check out i-40 in north carolina. chapel hill had accidents, cars, two at least we know of, flipping over. we have accidents all throughout the area as we watch these icy condition conditions or starting to see the snow to the north. let's show you what's happening. the low pressure offshore, it's bringing in colder air, a little bit at the surface. we're watching this cold air coming on in and as it does it's keeping temperatures at or below freezing but we've got moisture coming in off of the atlantic and that's creating this icing condition. we have freezing rain advisories from huntsville all the way to charlotte and winter weather advisory up in southern new jersey. we're going to watch mostly for ice upwards of a quarter of an inch while that probably won't bring down power lines it will make for messy roads and probably delays. freezing fog in central idaho, in california as well. light snow making its way flew the central great lakes. sunshine but very chilly and breezy with wind chills in single digits throughout the northeast. we're going to get to your local forecast coming up. hi, at san francisco, looking very pretty. you can see all across the board here in the bay area. microclimate showing you a clear sky, which is really good news considering the fog we had to get through yesterday. but here's the deal. temperatures are very cold this morning. we're going to end up in the mid 60s. 62 degrees in san francisco. 66 degrees for today right here in beautiful san jose. getting into your friday, a little shower activity on the way, but we'll stay nice and mild between now and then. >> and that's your latest weather. >> thank you. a police officer in montana has been cleared of wrong doing in the deadly shooting of an unarmed man. in a newly released dash cam footage you see both of the incident and the response. we should warn some may find this disturbing. >> reporter: it looks like a routine traffic stop. >> why are you moving your hands so much. making me nervous. >> reporter: then officer morrison -- >> i will shoot you. >> seconds later three shots are fired. >> hands up. hands up. >> reporter: one of the four men in the car, richard ramirez who wasn't armed later died. >> he put himself at risk when he need not and had to act to save himself. in doing so, someone was needlessly killed. >> reporter: the dash cam kept rolling catching the officer minutes after he pulled the trigger. this was the 5-year veteran's second deadly shooting in as many years. in 2013, he killed another man after he reached for what was later found to be a bb gun. cleared by a coroner's jury of criminal action in both cases, the officer faces no criminal charges. >> the public got a thorough presentation of evidence that was our objective and seven citizens made a decision and informed decision. >> reporter: the ramirez family told nbc news they are shocked by the verdict and are planning to bring a civil suit. as of this morning, officer morrison remains on the police force. for "today," miguel almaguer, nbc news, los angeles. >> in other news a question, is it happening at your child's school. with common core standards increasingly taking hold across the country more school administrators are saying they simply don't have enough time in the day and that is leading to a growing number of them putting an end to recess. kerry sanders is in orlando. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. common core sets standards and for kids to prove that they have reached those they have to take exams. now, teachers say to teach kids to pass those tests they need more time in the classroom. so they had to cut something. recess. kids often joke it's their favorite time of the school day, recess. in orlando, recess is no joke. now when the school bell rings, at 23 elementary schools, it's off to another class, because principals have done away with recess. >> they have become machines that produce data as opposed to children. >> reporter: standardized tests known as common core exams often determine a teacher's pay. sometimes even their job. so instead of 20 minutes on the playground, teachers are using the extra time to teach to the test. >> because so much of the money is tied to the school's scores and their grades, everybody is pressured. >> there are usually two sides to every story. not so with recess. >> reporter: in orlando in a standing room only school board meeting tuesday, parents protested the cut. as nationwide more and more school districts are eliminating or considering cutting recess. many experts believe recess actually enhances learning and losing the unstructured play time robs kids of the ability to learn important social skills. >> at the end of the day who cares if you have straight a's and you get a scholarship to harvard if you are socially inept. >> school administrators say they are sympathetic but the clock is their enemy. >> we will come to a place in florida and probably nationally we have to add nate we don't have enough minutes in the day to get everything done that we would like to see accomplished for our children. >> so that would be of course the simplest of answers of course, just make the school day longer and work recess back into the school day. but administrators say that of course means it's going to cost more money and add minl straighters here and most across the country say it's money they don't have. >> thank you very much. i'm sure we all have opinions, three kids, let me tell you, they need recess. they do. >> it's not a luxury item. i wonder what the viewers think. >> recess was my best class. i was good at it. let's go in the orange room and talk about i don't know how much after discussion it is but people really did want to weigh in on it. the question we posted at today.com. you want to see the results? here we go. 99% say of play games together or imagine together is just as important as learning. i'm a school bus driver and makes me mad when the school punishes a child. they need an outlet for that energy. yes, and as a >> i don't know what happened there. >> 7:30 now on this wednesday morning, january 14th 2015. a day that will live in infamy. one of those puppies is going to call studio 1-a home and be called a guide dog. >> let's just say, this isn't just a short-term thing. this dog is going to live here for 16 months. >> right. >> that's a long time. >> a member of the family. let's take a look at what's making headlines this wednesday morning. astronauts on the american side of the international space station have been evacuate over the russian side. an alarm went off overnight and nasa said the crew was moved as a precaution. >> a branch of al qaeda released a new video overnight. it again claimed responsibility for the terror attack in paris offices of "charlie hebdo." the first edition of the newspaper was released 3 million copies sold within a few hours. and lawyers for dzhokhar tsarnaev are asking a judge to suspend jury selection for at least a month. they say last week's attacks in france could lead to extraordinary prejudice in that case in boston. and just ahead, an emotional interview with the husband of brittney menard the woman who decided to end her own life after battling terminal cancer. her husband is speaking out about that choice and what he does to honor his wife. meredith vieira is here to share their conversation. and on a lighter note we are marking 63 years of "today" this morning. and carson you've got a trivia question for us. >> i've got a few. here is your very first. happy birthday by the way, everybody. who was the first sitting president interviewed right here on "today"? keep those guesses coming #orangeroom and we'll see how you do. >> thanks carson. let's begin this half hour with a remarkable rescue at sea after a man fell overboard from a cruise ship. here's nbc's janet shamlian. >> reporter: it was like a movie scene. a man falls from a massive cruise ship becoming little more than a speck in the water off the coast of mexico. then seemingly impossible. another ship sails by. a young girl and her dad hear screaming and then spot the man and call the crew. >> it was very rough that day, high winds, high seas. it was hard to spot the man in the water. he would actually disappear sometimes behind the waves. >> reporter: david hern was on the "disney magic" and knew the p.a. announcement meant man overboard. he took this rescue video at 6:30 in the morning. he says they lowered a life boat into the water but the weather worked against them. >> i knew i heard mr. mob, mr.>> i heard he was on the starboard side and man overboard. >> the 22-year-old fell from the oasis of the seas. we are grateful for the other ship's assistance royal caribbean said. they haven't released the man's name but he is okay. david kern said it was pure luck. a ship in the right place and persons alert at just the right time. >> it was surreal. didn't expect to see that on my cruise. >> nbc news. >> lucky man. >> everybody was banking on that. >> we are telling you this morning about the lasting impact of an infamous call in an nfl game when a replacement referee made a controversial call. he is opening up about how it changed his life and not for the better. joe has that story this morning. good morning. >> good morning. that game took place nearly 2 1/2 years ago and many feel the controversial conclusion helped bring an end to the lock out. fans players and coaches moved on. not lance easily. he is spoking out about his battle with severe depression. some called it the fail mary and others the inaccurate perception. the call during the seahawks and packers game in 2012 where even the officials were fill ins in the labor dispute seemed confused. in the end his ruling stuck, touchdown seahawks. >> never in a million years did i think my name would be out there like that and it would blow up like it did. >> the players and the coaches blasted the call and president obama said the game's out come was terrible. the revs were mocked on late night tv including snl. >> you wanted the best and getting replacement revs. >> e-mails and stuff i had to turn over to law enforcement to run every to make sure we were safe. >> he seemed confident on today. >> did you make the right call? >> yes, chemo and radiation were available to her. but, would it have added to her life? we were being told maybe another month or two. she decided she wanted to live the six months. >> she pent her last months hiking, traveling, all the things she loved most and making her own choices. >> she applied for it and was granted the prescription for aid in dying medicine. i picked it up and man. >> you picked it up. >> she was in the farmalaska doing the things she set her mind to do. >> she was in a hike getting in the things she wants to do and you are at a drugstore picking up the medicine that will take her life. >> the pharmacist explained as soon as she saw what it was for, there was this look that i imagine anybody would have like oh wait a minute. that's what this is. yes. >> brittany's husband said his wife knew exactly what she was doing. she didn't want to suffer and towards the end, she was rapidly deteriorating with frequent seizures and headaches and pain. >> her symptoms were a constant reminder that she was sick. >> you said that when she passed it was clear that she was no longer in pain. >> it truly was the most peaceful experience that you could ever hope for when you talk about a person's passing. >> if i were sick the way she was i would want to die in my sleep. she planned everything out. she wanted specific people in that room for her which she called it a room of love. >> the suffering and the torment and everything she had gone through, that was finally lifted. >> and later this month, brittany's home state of california will be reviewing legislation to legalize aid in dying, but dan admits it's an uphill battle because of religious and political groups that oppose it. >> not seeing enormous momentum? >> there are some puppy rules. seeing eyes he's going to be a guide dog. we don't want him jumping on people. the person he may be going to is not going to necessarily see him necessarily. so we wouldn't want him to jump up and hurt them. also, we don't want the puppy to eat anything off the floor because if you're blind or visually impaired you can't see what they are eating. it takes a lot of practice reward for not pigging things up off the ground. >> can he go on the couch? >> no. >> just a thought. >> as much as you want to cuddle him on the couch with you, he can't go on furniture. it's really important. as a guide dog they don't get out in furniture. they would be out in public and you wouldn't want them to get up on furniture they shouldn't be on. >> outside of the plaza, what kind of experience will this be for him as a guide dog? >> it's a great socialization experience as puppy raisers. everything the world has to offer. so some day when they become guidedogs they can go into the world confidently and know things are things to tackle. >> he just walked into the camera. >> this is your third time raising a puppy. >> yes. >> what does it mean when you hand off the puppy to the person who is going to be with them. >> it is so amazing. the first dog i raised, pwuldboulder, is a working guide dog. and his owner said he's not just a dog. he's part of me. >> where is he going to be at nighttime? it would be great. i would love it. >> are you superstitious about that. will you wake up with a coffee is and listen? >> i'm very superstitious about everything. but i'm actually going to be on a plane going to l.a. for the critics choice awards. maybe i will buy the internet just in case. >> i think it's important just this time. it's a heartbreaking role. we see a woman diagnosised with alzheimer's so young, at the age of 50. >> that's right. >> we watched her deterioration. you really plunged yourself into this world in terms of research. >> well it wasn't something i had very familiarity with. i'm lucky, i haven't had any personal contact with alzheimer's disease. i said i didn't want to represent anything on camera that i hadn't actually seen. so i spent a lot of time talking to people at the national alzheimers association, new york alzheimer's support. i asked them how they felt what could they explain to me went to a long-term care facility, went to mt. sinai. i was administered a cognitive test. >> and you talked with people actually suffering with the illness. >> oh, yeah. >> that is so interesting and remarkable about the portrayal. it shows they are still real people. even in the title "still alice". >> it is not like you are suddenly obliterated. everyone is still there and people are living with it. how do you live with cognitive decline. how do you keep yourself going, relationships going, your life going. >> did it have you feeling reflective? there are some things so heart wrenching about alzheimer's. a person actually watches their world slip away. >> we tried to make the movie not with a sense of loss and diminishment but appreciation in what we have and what we value and who we love. our directors is als. it was really challenging for him to be there every single day. but there are also a couple -- when richard was diagnosed he said well what do you want to do? they decided they wanted to make movies. what we do who we are, what we love all of those things are valuable. >> it's a big moment for you. a big moment in your career. but you had quite a few big moments. i want to talk about the early days. >> okay. >> like in the '80s you were a soap star. >> thank you. i was on a soap opera. >> you won a daytime emmy didn't you? >> i did. >> tell us about yourself in the early days of being an actress. >> oh, my gosh. it was funny. i was telling my friend elaine who does my makeup; do you remember the cafe that was here? a lot of my friends waited tables. i thought i would get too overwhelmed with the people. i don't know. i feel like it was -- i kind of can't belive it. i can't believe i've been doing it this long. i can't believe i came to new york saying i want to be an actress. >> i read that you said you were kind of a goody-goody. the other actors would go out to the bars. >> i'm still a goody-goody. i still am. like to be prepared. it makes for boring television doesn't it? >> at the time, no, and i kind of told her, don't do this. there's no guarantee. these are criminals, you know. but in truth, when i talked to cyber security experts, they said you know, all the cases we've heard of they have gotten their files back. >> did you think of going to the police? is there anything they can do or is it out of their hands? >> people do go to the police, fbi, there's been police departments, one in tennessee and one in massachusetts that have paid these ransom ware ransoms themselves because they've been hacked, files have been captured, and there's nothing you can do. this is being called the age of computer viruss. >> the fascinating thing here is your mom decides to pay the ransom, she tries to do the right thing because of the value issue and timing issue, they locked her files permanently anyway. they said you did not get it to us on time, and then, she did something extraordinary. >> they raised it to $1,000. she was looking at a $1500 tab, and she wrote them a note through this message interface that the ransom note provides access to. and she just explained what happened. it was the week of thanksgiving, the banks were closed. >> tried to do this and that. >> i had all the issues, there's a snowstorm in massachusetts and incredibly, a couple hours later he key arrived. >> do they have any idea who's doing this? >> first thing is not open attachment or download programs from sources you don't know about. if it looks funny, don't install it. the second thing is to have some antivirus or antimalware on your computer. >> is that a given? usually you feel like it's in there. >> it is now. microsoft has them, it's available for free, windows defender and you can download something for windows 7, microsecurity essentials. you have to download it, but it is free. >> what freaks people out when the ransom ware takes over, they're going to lose everything, records their photos. >> everything. >> the reason is because they haven't backed it up. >> yes. >> that's the next step. exactly. the first thing is to have a, you know, antivirus and make sure you're updating your computer web browser, but the next big thing is make backups of your computer. >> how? >> there are a couple things, the easiest way is to get an external hard drive like this. get it at the store about $100 plug it in, and you can back up all your files that way. once a week, once a month, but there are also a bunch of online services that'll do it for you too. what's nice about this it's about $5 a month, but it'll back everything up for you. you can go to places like crash plan, it's about $5 a month, and these services basically will download a program and back everything up to the cloud. what's great about this, say your computer was stolen or there was a fire, you've got a koim in the cloud that you can then restore to a new device. >> solved the problem. >> she would have been okay. >> okay. so, when you talk the browser, what do you want update your browser? most the of the time it updates automatically, if you're using an older version internal explorer can get viruss and having these you know, different security problems. if you lose like firefox or google chrome browser if you're using an older version that's a good idea. >> she was telling us this is not new. this has been around for since the late 1980s, does the technology for the hackers continue to stay one step ahead of what we can buy? >> that's the bad part. the technology is not new, what is new though is they are using these encryption technology is nothing to do but paying. the only way you can get in is if you have the key unfortunately the bad guys have the key. >> is this something that's unusual?
