come? and surprise of a lifetime. the woman who showed up at her own wedding without knowing in advance it was happening. we'll show how her fiance pulled it off. december 28,2014. 28 2014. this is "today" from navy base news this is "today f. from studio 1a rockefeller plaza. good morning and welcome to "today" on a sunday hornmorning. i'm lester holt. >> a lot of news breaking overnight. let's get to our top story. disappearance of air asia flight 8501. there were 162 on board the jet, 155 passengers and seven crew members, most of them malaysian. >> according to the air traffic controllers t pilot asked to change course because of stormy weather. there were apparently dense storm clouds in the area. >> the plane was lost 42 minutes after take over after darkness falls. there's no sign of the aircraft. the search has been halt added for the fight. >> katie is at the airport where the plane was headed. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. of 155 passengers the vast majority were indonesian. it was supposed to get here 12 hours ago but dropped off the radar somewhere over the java sea. this is the third incident with the malaysian based airline this year alone. an emotional scene at the airport in indonesia as families learn the plane carrying their loved ones is missing, lost somewhere over the java sea. i hope for a miracle, and may god save all of them said one friend waiting for news. the plane was on its way from surabaya to singapore when the pielot climbed to avoid clouds. there were thunderstorms in the area around the time the aircraft disappeared. this is temperature third incident involving a malaysian air lyle the malaysian airlines flight from march that's still missing. that from bay jing carrying 239 passengers and crew. then there's mh 17. it was shot down over the ukraine this summer. today, more questions and heart ache from those who want to know what happened to their loved ones. >> reporter: there are 47 friends and family here. they're sequestered from the media. we did see a few of them earlier and they were, as you can imagine, very distraught. they're looking for answers trying to find out exactly what happened. officials know where and when it dropped off radar. that should give them a better idea, but we're going on 14-hours now since missing and still no sign of the plane: guys back to you. >> heartbreaking. katie, thank you. >> mike bettis has been monitoring the weather there. >> it's not unusual. the suddenly trade winds produce stormy weather. you can see that on the satellite map. all between where it was expected to land in singapore and the flight track would take it through the seas. the problem is we have thunderstorms for recovery efforts. we know the pilot asked to change altitude. but the storm tops were at 50,000 feet. unfortunately, we get a lot of turbulence all the way to the top of the clouds. even if it was changing elevation, it may not have made any difference whatsoever. it's an unfortunate situation. they do their best to get around these things. >> greg fizen, good to see you. we see it all the time especially in the summertime here in this part of our country. pilots deviates around these thunderstorms. what is the danger of a plane flying as cruise level flying into thunderstorms? >> one of the big issues with these types of thunderstorms that blossom 30,000 40,000 50,000 feet is the activity within the thunderstorm. the up and down draft. the potential for hail and icing conditions. those types of winds and gusty wind conditions that could compromise the structure of an airplane, it creates moderate to severe turbulence, in some cases, extreme turbulence. we saw this with air france 47. you may not be able to maintain control of the airplane. >> you mention the plane that left brazil to france. that was outside of radar coverage. in this case this plane was under full radar coverage at the time so if it fell from the sky or even broke up wouldn't radar have continued to pick up a hit of at least metal falling? >> well in these dense thunderstorms, you can attenuate the signal. you may not have a good reflective signal and then all sorts of electrical signals from the aircraft. the transponder and radio communications were working up until a point but then lost both radio and the transponder in this particular instanls. that could indicate an electrical problem on board the aircraft whether it was prior to a loss of control. >> and of course weather is the obvious thing we tend to look at. but you as an investigator know you approach these things in an agnostic way, any possibility is still alive until you can rule it out. what others things might cause a plane to disappear from radar? >> the best evidence we have and no we have no real investigative activity taking place until we find the damage and get a recorder but from an investigative standpoint what kind of weather did this have prior to departure, what was the flight plan that was planned and why was it they didn't see this or at least monitor it better flying through this convergence zone? you have to have a way to fly out, a plan "b" if you will and then what the crew may or may not have had to outclimb this thunderstorm. if we're talking 50,000 foot con consecutivecon vektive activity they should have been able to get help from the airline dispatch folks. that will be a big issue, what in fact may have been the decision maker for this true. i don't see anything other than that because we don't have a lot of information but it looks like weather will be a primary factor that will be investigated by the teams from indonesia, singapore, and malaysia. >> we appreciate your analysis. thank you so much. a greek ferry caught fire overnight. betty has more on that. >> a dramatic rescue effort under way off the coast of grease. passengers and crews trapped aboard a burning ferry this morning. battling heavy seas to get to the stranded boat. it's miles from gorfu. it's not any danger of sinking. it was from greasegreece when the fire erupted. the slaying of two patrolmen, tens of thousands of officers gathered for the officers saturday. they turned their backs when the mayor spoke. the somber and divisive gathering. >> reporter: slain nypd officer ramos got a sendoff, not only to service and dedication to his community, but his commitment to face family as well. >> to the ramos family we are all lucky to have rafael. >> reporter: the vice president echoed in words that was echoed by the turnout, came country wide. marches of support far beyond. salt lake city boston so when an assassin's bullet targeted two officers it targeted this city. and it touched the soul of the entire nation. >> reporter: speakers included governor andrew cuomo, police commissioner bill bratton, and mayor bill de blasio ignored by some outside. >> feeling of betrayal is strong. >> reporter: inside, the mayor received a warmer reception, his officer saying the sole focus is unifying this city and honoring the lives of the officer. >> you can see in his family can see what kind of parent he was. what kind of husband he was, what kind of son he was. >> reporter: he was, mr. biden said a cop for all the right reasons. doctors are discussing when they will okay former president george w.h. bush. the 90-year-old is improving but is expected to stay in a houston hospital for now. the man who shot and wounded pope john paul ii made a surprise visit to the vatican and the tomb. men at aliaja laying flowers on the pope he tried to assassinate in 1981. the gesture comes 31 years to the day. pope john paul ii was cannonized into saint hood this year. it's a couple days until new years. the famous crystal ball getting fixed up for the moment that drops from the flag pope at one times square 2015. around a million people are expected to pack new york city streets as they count down to the new year. hard to believe it is already upon us. >> and you'll be there?
