frigid outbreak that's going to continue. in fact, this is looking at the snapback of the polar vortex for next week. this is even going to be colder than right now. but in the meantime, what we expect to see today, atlanta at 26, kansas city 18, and feels like 27 degrees in washington, d.c. and our highs today are going to be well below zero. tallahassee at 16 degrees below, make that 58 degrees int tallahass tallahassee. 16 degrees below average. indianapolis, even atlanta for today, a high of 47 degrees. 18 degrees below average. that's where gabe gutierrez is now and everybody is feeling the chill. my friend, you got puffer on and people are going to be staying in it a while. >> reporter: good morning. i don't know how i feel about this rokerthon. two days ago it was 60 degrees now we're dealing with temperatures about 26, 27 degrees with the wind chill it feels much colder. we'll take it. other parts of the country dealing with worse. in the northeast these are pictures from social media from new york, new jersey, and philadelphia. they dealt with snowfall. in wisconsin with brutal snowfall for a little bit there. they are used to this type of stuff in december, but this is november. then in colorado as well, denver seat record low, negative 14 degrees. the south has also seen a little bit of snowfall, memphis and little rock. thankfully in atlanta we do not expect a repeat of what we saw last winter when two or three inches of snow and ice brought this city to a standstill. no precipitation is forecast until sunday. and then by then forgiven. other news, doctors in nebraska are getting ready to treat the tenth case of ebola on american soil. the patient is arriving from sierra leone where he had been working as a surgeon. kristin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're learning more about the surgeon who tested positive for ebola on monday in sierra leone. dr. martin salia is a permanent resident in america. a spokesman at nebraska medical center said medical personnel on the jet will evaluate him and if he is stable enough for transport he would be brought to omaha sometime saturday afternoon. the medical center is where two other ebola patients were successfully treated for ebola. salia would be the only known ebola case in the u.s. dr. craig was released. salia's son said hopefully god's grace, service, a scathing report that allowed the intruder to enter the white house this past september. this morning ipts raising tough questions for the agency. peter alexander is at the white house for us this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this is a nine-page review for the department of homeland security. nearly everything that could have gone wrong did and it also lays out what happened when omar gonzalez got through the front doors here at the white house, where he didn't run past agents, he walked. this is the home video of fence jumper omar gonzalez armed with a knife running across the white house lawn in september. a highly critical new report from the department of homeland security reveals exactly what happened that night. after barging through the white house front doors knocking a demale secret service officer to the ground gonzalez walked past the officer, who accidentally grabbed a flashlight instead of her baton, before pulling out her gun. ignoring commands to stop he turned left and walked into the east room, then turned around and tackled by an officer in the hallway. the report adds the counter assault team didn't immediately enter because they were unfamiliar with the layout of the white house. and waited to get into a tactical formation before going in. >> this was just an unfortunate group of mishaps that all unbelievably happened at the same time. >> reporter: the review blames the secret service for performance, organizational, technical and other failures. it found as the secret service alarm systems and radios failed to work and many of the officers on duty didn't see gonzalez as he jumped the fence. afung the failures the inaction of a uniformed secret service canine handler in a van whose ear piece was out and wasn't listening to his two-way radio. instead the officer was taking a personal call on his cell phone. and only saw gonzalez after seeing another officer chasing him. the head of the house homeland security committee told nbc news more hearings are planned. >> this is a premier federal law enforcement agency that really has gone awry. >> reporter: the secret service says it's changed its training and procedures, still law enforcement official tells nbc news that so far no one has been placed on administrative leave as a result of this report and at least for now the individuals involved remain on their posts here. >> peter alexander, thank you very much. >> to chilling new threats from isis. a new video the group lashing out at the west. the man thought to be behind the mess is the leader some believe had been silenced for good. richard engel is in turkey. >> reporter: good morning. not just new data, there is new data that has come out from a respected british think tank that shows that u.s.-led air strikes against isis are not slowing the group and the video appears to show the leader is alive and well. he is perhaps the most wanted most dangerous man in the world. the last time we saw abu bakr al baghdadi was in early july when dressed the part he declared himself the ruler of his so called islamic state. then he disappeared. as isis fighters terrorized through syria and iraq. attacked daily by u.s. air strikes. until last week, iraqi official claimed one of those air strikes killed home run maybe just injured baghdadi. it seems those reports were wishful thinking. on thursday in an audio recording which isis was from baghdadi a man sounding much like him called on others to join the cause. and unleashed, quote, volcanos of jihad. >> showing that he's getting a lot more credibility and more support. >> reporter: isis has proven effective as a propaganda war attracting more than just disillusioned lone wolves. a dangerous egyptian group pledged allegiance to isis as did an entire city in libya run by militants. baghdadi thinks he has a state and is looking to expand it. in the new recording baghdadi no longer seems content to recruit >> i would take it if it came to me. if something happened i wanted to be right next to my guys. >> you felt like this was probably going to end right there for all of you. you thought you were going on a mission that would end in kill or capture for all of you. >> we were pretty sure it was a one-m hif one-way mission. >> what is your mindset. >> this is why we're here, why we joined the military, why we became navy s.e.a.l.s. the country asked us to do this, we're going to accept. >> you walk in the room, bin laden is on the third floor. >> yes. >> what happens? >> he was on the third floor. i was behind one man. we went up a stairwell through curtains and there were some unknown people there, they turned out to be women. he sort of pushed them back and fell into the hallway. in order to absorb what he thought would have been a blast. he gave his life so the guy behind him could get a shot. >> the point man, the navy s.e.a.l. who was leading, pushed the women away from bin laden. >> yes, he didn't know it was me behind him. he knew it was one of his guys behind him. i was able to turn right and i was a few feet away from osama bin laden. >> let's focus on that. was it your sense he was hiding behind the women. >> he was in a room behind another woman. >> he was standing. >> yes, on two feet, yes. >> did you immediately recognize him. >> immediately in half a second. he was not surrendering. what he was doing was -- it was within my rules of engagement. if anyone is going to be wearing a suicide vest it's this man. just because he's not surrendering he could what we called clack himself off. he needed to be shot. >> when you took that shot what was going through your mind. >> this wasn't my first mission. probably 400 plus. i took the shot that was my primary threat. i went to the secary threat, clear the room and make sure the other two in the room were properly taken care of. >> in retrospect now, take a moment back and reflect on it. how did he seem to you? did he seem in those moments in the dark defiant, aggressive, resigned? >> all he seemed to me was he was not surrendering. i can't say what he was thinking. had he surrendered we would have taken him. he could have been a lot of intelligence, obviously. he was not surrendering and he was a threat. >> you stood over him and watched him breathe his last breath. >> i did see that, yes. >> could you describe that moment? >> again, it was sort of surreal, another target we did. not the most difficult target we'd ever done. i've seen that before. i saw it again. it was more of a thought of okay, time to do our job. we have a little bit of time to find more stuff, find more intelligence to properly defend this country courage l further. at that point it's like, wow, we might get through the mission. >> you make it seem like another day at the office in some ways. when did the momentousness of this hit you? >> i had to clear the threats in the room. his wife was on the room, amal. there was a 2-year-old in the room as well. we made sure he was next to his mom because when we're on these targets one of the things we do, if there's kids involved we try to make sure they're not more scared than they need to be, because they had nothing to do with this. when i went back, other s.e.a.l.s were in the room. i actually stopped. one of my friends was looking at me, i asked him, what do we do now? he said now we go find the comput computers. okay, okay, i'm back. let's do this. >> there are two conflicting accounts of what actually happened. another fellow s.e.a.l. said he finished off bin laden, that first s.e.a.l., the point man as you call him, fired a shot, a fatal shot and that he came in and finished him off. he in essence takes you out of the story. is he lying? >> no. i can't only speak for what i saw. this is the fog of wa are. to say this mission and the last few moments were high stress would do a great disservice to high stress. we're at the top of our game here. i can tell you what i saw and what i saw was i went up the stairs behind the first guy as the number two man. i turned to the right and osama bin laden was standing there and i shot him and i killed him. there's no controversy as far as i'm concerned, fog of war. this was a very good thing that we did. >> every s.e.a.l. that went in there is an american hero. >> absolutely. >> why single yourself out and say but i'm the one who shot him? >> well, i was never going to do that. that wasn't my plan. because i came up to the museum to donate a shirt. i thought the shirt and the american flag would be the right thing to do. while i was there, i met a lot of 9/11 families. just them telling me i could give them closure, help the healing process, even today as i walk around, you know, the port authority police department who -- 37 papd officers went in and lost their lives from rookie up to the chief. for them to say, yes, it was our job but we lost so many great americans that we lost little league coaches, going to funerals of fatherless children. what you're doing, not what i did, what i'm doing now, telling the story is helping them heal. that's worth it to me. >> some of your fellow s.e.a.l.s, former supervisors say it betrays the s.e.a.l. ethos to make yourself public saying part of this code is i do not advertise the nature of my work, nor seek recognition for my action. what do you say to that? >> even people that weren't on mission i have respect for their opinions. they did respond and they should respond. i respect a response. but you know, one of the things we fought for was freedom and a lot of these freedoms, free speech, free opinion. i hope they don't think i did the wrong thing. i hope they see i'm doing it for the right reasons. the reason is this platform i've been given, helping 9/11 families and helping vets. i got out of the navy before my 20-year mark. i experienced what it's like to transition without a pension. now i've started a foundation, pecial operationsg. vets that didn't do 20 years get out and transition. we gave our first grant out. that's to help with a lot of the bills, post traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury. we gave our first grant to a former s.e.a.l. team 6 member. they had maxed out their cards, they didn't know what to do and now they're getting help. >> bob o'neill, wish we had more time to talk to you. >> so do i. >> you think about that moment every day? >> it's a lot of urgency, a lot of exuding urgency, and a lot of cia jargon, which is a lot harder for me than medical jargon was. >> and sprinkling in a little arabic and farsi. >> yeah, i was going to say something -- >> like a party trick? >> yeah, hold on. [ speaking in foreign language ] >> what does that mean? rokerthon? >> no, yeah, it does, in farsi. >> rokerthon is the same in every language. what did you say? >> if one acts, act as a liberator. or so they tell me. >> you convinced us. >> this show is really cool. a lot of people excited and talking about it. and it feels to me kind of like a thread we're seeing in tv right now. you have strong women in these sort of politically related shows, whether it's homeland or your show or "scandal" is another one. what attracted you to this role? >> i think for me, what i found most interesting about it was the idea of sort of looking at the cia from a different angle. we haven't really seen this side of things, the analysts and langley and how they're responsible for sort of sifting through all the intel that's brought to them by the cia operatives and the assets out in the field. and they have to, you know, sift through tons and tons and tons of intelligence to narrow down the most critical threats and what's real and what's not and what's just chatter and what's actionable. so i kind of wanted to show that vibe and it sort of has a bit of a, like -- i hate comparing things to things, but it's sort of like newsroomy meets west wingy, meets "homeland." >> i'm in. >> you had me at "homeland." and you know, perhaps these strong female characters, not just your character, but the president of the united states is played by alfre woodward. the fact that the female is kind of besides the point, they're just good at their job. >> exactly. and that's what was really important to me about it. let's not make a big thing about the fact it's a female president and a woman that's her briefer. let's make it that they're there because they're exceptionally good at what they do. that they have earned this place and it's not about, you know, them using their feminine wiles or what not to get there. it's just their talent, their ability, their level of intelligence and commitment to the country. >> you've done something recently, katherine, i thought was so cool and impressive, which is you've changed the way you think about your career now that you have children of your own. and in fact, you want to do roles that make your daughter proud. what'd you mean by that? >> well, i've always gravitated towards characters and stories that i find some measure of hope or inspiration in. you know, i just want sort of more uplifting stuff. that's just what appeals to me. and i have to feel on behalf of my kids, i just sort of want to tell those stories. how we survive, how we grow, how we learn from our mistakes, versus get, you know, demolished by them. >> and we're seeing picture of your two darling kissed. what we're not seeing is the 34 pets you have. did i hear that right? >> al, thanks a lot. you'll want to pay attention to this one. this morning on a special snooze or lose, an eye opener for all of us who don't get enough shut-eye. al is an expert at this point, after that 34-hour rokerthon. and in just a moment, we'll g the results of his alertness test. but first, we've all heard how dangerous drowsy driving can be. and this morning, "today" national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is going to show us. >> this affects all of us, right, from college kids to senior citizens and everyone in between. new numbers out this morning, and they are staggering. take a look over here. because of drowsy driving, 100,000 car accidents every year. 71,000 injuries, and 1,550 deaths, all caused by drowsy driving. so we set up an extreme experiment, even perhaps more extreme than rokerthon, because i put myself to the test. 30 hours awake, a little less than roker, no sleep, no caffeine, but what would happen behind the wheel? my eyes may be open, but doctors say i'm essentially asleep right now, swerving behind the wheel of a car, all the effects of drowsiness. a stress on the body that can have deadly effect. in june, a driver for walmart awake for more than 24 hours, police say, struck a car carrying actor tracy morgan, seriously injuring him and killing his close friend. and it can happen to anyone. >> nicole was a very bright, cheerful young lady. >> reporter: at only 18 years old, nicole lee had her whole life in front of her. >> my sister was an amazing young woman, full of life, and she was taken from us instantaneously. >> reporter: the virginia tech freshman was returning from a long day of skiing. her friend fell asleep behind the wheel. >> there were no skid marks or braking. he hit a tree on my sister's side of the car at full speed. >> reporter: to show you just how dangerous it can be, we set up a test at the skid harbor driving school in connecticut. >> hi, jeff, how you doing? >> what are we doing today? >> take you through some technical obstacle courses and see how you drive. >> reporter: it's the middle of the afternoon, i'm wide awake and it shows, pulling off tight turns. >> good, nice and smooth. >> reporter: and last-minute lane changes, never hitting a single cone. that was a piece of cake. >> then i went home and kept myself awake for nearly 30 hours. >> it is about 1:00 a.m. and fatigue is starting to set in. we are deep into the infomercials now, 3:00 a.m. late-night pizza run. back to the driving track to see how i do. >> how we doing today? how you feeling? >> tired, but actually, i feel fine. i feel like this is the kind of situation that a lot of people drive in. maybe i could too. >> remember, any of the cones we hit, they're considered a crash. >> a little jerky. >> ali little bit. >> sorry. >> this time, i failed my driving test, again and again, and again. ugh, it's frustrating. >> he's struggling. >> dr. charles sizeler of boston's brigham and women's hospital is one of the country's leading experts on sleep. he analyzed our video for signs of trouble. >> it's a dramatic distance. he's certainly impaired and struggling to stay awake and at any moment could lose that struggle. >> reporter: just a few experts of what experts call microsleep could be the difference between life and death. >> most people don't realize that part of the brain can be asleep while another part of the brain is awake. so you may be able to keep your foot full throttle on the accelerator and yet not have the judgment area of the brain engaged. >> reporter: for my final test, i began to drive for several miles, simulating a long highway trip, the deadliest for most drowsy drivers. my eyes are having a hard time focusing. that's when the instructor surprised me with an unexpected line of cones right in my path. >> all of a sudden it happened, huh? >> that could have been an accident. >> that could have been a car, that could have been a person, it's scary. >> we easily could have stopped, but by the time that jeff put it together, it was too late. >> doctors say losing sleep for one night is the equivalent of being legally drunk. and here's a tip there experts. the best indicator that you're about to fall asleep behind the wheel is falling asleep behind the wheel. many of us, at least, have had that moment where you feel yourself nodding off and you jolt awake. you get that false sense of security that once your adrenaline is going, you're safe to drive, but doctors say that's the number one indicator that you will fall asleep again and nod off within a couple of minutes. thank goodness al doesn't drive, he rides his bike. so we're god on that. >> we've all been there, it's scary. thanks a lot. >> al has been through a lot in the last few days. he just completed a guinness world record, 34-hour weathercast. let's check in with dr. ana creager, good morning to you. >> before we talk to you, al, physically, right now, you've been up well over 34 hours. how do you feel? >> i don't feel that tired, but i actually tried to sleep, catch up on sleep earlier in the week. but i know you can't >> doctor, i mean, after 34 hours like this. what would you expect to see in al? >> good morning. congratulations for all your efforts and getting this record. now your brain and body may not feel as rested because over this whole period of time and lacking sleep your brain energy has been drained. so the brain processing is speed and all the energy that goes through the body and really circulates through the organs is being depleted. you're going to feel very tired and you're going to know some changes you may feel edgy or irritable and your appetite will definitely change because the brain is looking for high-energy foods, let's say. >> an alertness test. you did one before al started this 34-hour marathon and then after. how big was the difference? you know the skin gets dry and itchy when the winter sets in? >> with the lack of humidity, we lose a lot of moisture in our skin. when you start with the face, what you want to do is change up some of your products. you want to gently exfoliate using something soft like a wash cloth and change to a soapless cleanser. all these products can be found in the drugstore. and if you take a little bit of this cetaphil cleanser and use the wash cloth to gently exfoliate and move on to applying a moisturizer, something that contains an spf, ceramide, a moisturizer. >> what about the lips? >> if you take a toothbrush and lightly exfoliate -- >> rub a dry toothbrush on your lip? >> or even with a little bit of water. and apply some aquaphor or neutrogena lip balm, something to hydrate the lip and make it feel better. >> what about that lovely rudolph nose some of us get? >> you come in from the winter, your nose dilates and the blood rushes to it. so take a little bit of neosporin or any antibiotic ointment, put a little bit on your hand, and apply a little bit of cortizone, an anti-inflammatory, mix these together, and apply it on to that red area on your nose, you'll see a big difference. >> what about your hands and feet? >> the hands and feet are going to crack and get fissured and irritated. take your hand and soak it in water with a little bit of oil, take it out and pat dry, and you apply a moisturizer. and you're going to look for something that says it's a hand cream or cuticle cream and apply it on there. and the reason to use this is it's rich in hyaluronic acids, there's more emollients and oils, and take some saran wrap or any plastic wrap and then the gloves, the glove is key, put a glove on to your hand and that will make a huge difference. >> what about the feet real quick? >> if you want to improve the feet, do the same thing as your hand, but exfoliate, get rid of the dry, dead skin, apply something with lactic acid and put a sock over it to put the moisture in. >> my hand feels fabulous. dr. wattenberg, thank you so much. coming up, we'll celebrate rokerthon with a little surprise. first, this is "today" on nbc. al, make yourself comfortable. the ordeal that is rokerthon is behind you. there's only one thing to do now. and that's to get a call from a special guest. sir, are you on the line?
