We have some information, but we want to give her a chance to settle down and be with the family for a moment. What do you know about the suspect in this case . Hes got a criminal history. He was already wanted in charles city, virginia for attempted murder, abduction, aggravated assault, a variety of charges. He was convicted of rape here in philadelphia back in 2005, and he has a very extensive criminal history, violent predator, very fortunate to get her back alive. You called him a thug yesterday. Any evidence he targeted her in particular . Well, they didnt know one another before hand, and it could just be a chance encounter. I mean, well know more when we have a chance to sit down and thoroughly interview her and interrogate him. Hes held now on charges that were filed by virginia as i mentioned before, and so we still got a lot of investigative work to do, but this was a stranger abduction as far as we know right now. This case got so much notice, of course, because of the Surveillance Video that captured this violent abduction. In your mind, is that piece of videotape what made the difference in this case and led finally to her rescue . Theres absolutely no question. Ive been in policing for 46 years, and ive never actually seen a kidnapping on video. It really did add to the sense of urgency. We were able to get it out to the media right away. That followed by a couple other pieces of video that we were able to obtain through the course of the investigation, and that led to a tip of an individual who had sold a car to this person. We contacted authorities in virginia, found that he had a warrant, able to track him to jessup, maryland, and we had a task force put together with atf, fbi, and u. S. Marshal service, and the Baltimore Field Office spotted the car, conducted surveillance, and he stepped out of the car momentarily, they took him down and not have a hostage situation and rescue her. It worked out great, and its unusual because usually the longer the things go, the less likely you are to find a victim alive. I know. You must be happy to have a happy ending. I get a little tired as the days go on, but i feel good. Obviously, as you know, Texas Health Presbyterian hospital has been criticized quite severely for some of the things that happened while mr. Duncan was under their care. Did you feel prepared by the hospital, by the nursing staff, by the management of the hospital to deal with an ebola patient . You know, we did not get much training. The first time that i put on the protective equipment, i was heading in to take care of the patient. So we didnt have excessive training where we could don and put on and take off the protective equipment until we got a level of being comfortable with it. I didnt have that. One of the most talked about aspects of your story, amber, the fact that after mr. Duncan passed. A couple days later, you into you to see family and friends in ohio. Did you talk about that trip with anyone at the hospital . Did anyone tell you not to go . No, i was never told that i couldnt travel. I talked to my icu management team. I actually called in on monday to verify that i was permitted to travel and then again i was at work on like tuesday or wednesday and i talked to management in person. And they said the cdc said it was okay to go. When you were still in ohio, the reporting has been that you called someone at the cdc and said, im going to come back to dallas and there have also been reports that you were feeling feverish at that time. Is that true . That is completely false. I never felt like ive read that someone said i felt weird or didnt feel right . Im a nurse, im a medical term i can use to quantify how i was feeling. I felt fievenl i felt normal. But that sunday when i heard about my colleague nina coming down with the virus, i was floored. I was afraid for myself and my family because i did everything that i was instructed to do every time and i felt like iffy na can get it, any one of us could have gotten it. So when you decided to come back to dallas, did you call anyone as a precaution and say, look, nina pham has come down with ebola, im about to travel to dallas on a commercial plane, is that okay . I never had a number to call the cdc directly. I would always callpy contact at the Health Department and then when i was in ohio before i was scheduled to leave, because i was so afraid of what could potentially happen, i did ask them. Well, is there anything that, you know, you guys can do to send for me . Do i need to leave earlier . You know, because i was worried. Im sure you read some of the reports that said the Amber Vincent was a nurse and how could she have gotten on that plane . It was careless and reckless, how did that make you feel in. It made me feel terrible. Because thats not me. Im not careless. Im not reckless. Im an icu nurse. I embrace protocol and guidelines and structure because if my daytoday nursing, it is a matter of life and death and i respect that fact. And you are still a nurse. Im wondering if you were called to do it again, to treat another ebola patient, would you do it . Absolutely. Nursing is what i do. Then youll have this beautiful applesauce, basically done here. You could eat it like this, nice and chunky, or puree it in the food processor. How did you make it pink . Because of the skin. You have more fiber and antioxidants. You put that in the fridge and scoop it out. You can eat it plain or we like it on our overnight oats and quinoa. Thats another great make ahead. Adds a little vitamins to your kids breakfast. Absolutely. Takes two minutes. I like it. Now we have blueberry breakfast bars. We mix up our dry ingredients. Add the oats, brown sugar, salt and baking powder. What are you adding that to. This is whole wheat flour. We will add the butter and well get our hands a little dirty. Okay. Want me to do this . Okay, yeah. Put your hands in, mix it up a little bit until we get this nice crummy mixture. Beautiful. Beautiful. That is awesome. Thats all you need to do. You end up with great crumbs and we save a couple and a half for our topping. This becomes the crust. We add a egg white and stir that up. Okay. And then well also ahead some blueberries. Do you fold them in . Gently so you dont bruise or mush them up. Once it is all combined, it goes into our parchment lines baking pan. Press it down there. Smoosh it. Smoosh it down a little. There we go. This bakes in the oven for about ten minutes until it is just a little cooked. And we end up with Something Like this. Okay. So now were going to spread just blueberry preserves. Thats all it is. I guess there is a lot of good vitamins and amazingly high in nutrients. So many antioxidants, right . And then the oats also and the whole wheat flour and then the crumbs on top. These are the crumbs we saved from before. Okay. Thats it. It goes in the oven for 30 minutes. How long can these keep in the fridge . You can keep them for three days or freeze them, wrap them individually and stick them in the freezer. The kids like the taste . Thats the whole thing. I think kids and grownups like the taste. Leann stratford knows all this so well. At the age of 42, she moved home to care for her father, who was battling cancer. After his passing, in 2006, leann faced more challenges, her mother had begun showing symptoms of the early stages of dementia. When my father was initially diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus, he had such a will and desire to live, and he was given four to six month sentence. And i said, dad, you know what, dont worry about it, im going to research some alternative things and were going to really, you know, sustain you. And he actually lived another two years, and he held out until his 50th wedding anniversary with my mom. Yes. And then signs of your moms dementia must have been so excruciating. Devastating. She started going into a depression after dad passed. And, you know, i started noticing Little Things, and it was at that time i felt i needed to have a conversation with her about, you know, what is next . We have got to get some things in order. Conversations, dale, that a lot of thats what dale knows about. The conversations are so important. And good for you that you thought and decided to have that conversation. You had a wonderful relationship with your mother, so much of what we need to Pay Attention to is what is our relationships . What do we say and how do we say it . It is often determined by the relationship. We may not be the person to be the news teller. We may have a doctor tell us, a friend help us if were not the best person. But the conversations do have to happen. They dont have to happen all at once. It is a series of conversations and and things too. A lot of things. Living wills, taking away the car keys, about what are the other ones . Finances. Living safely. You may live in a house that is well suited, but the fall may be concerning you so you may want to help your parent i think your parent may feel like youre imposing rules on me and why . They in a not see what youre saying. Did your mom see or notice did she trust you . Her independence is always very important. And i think she knew that, you know, that she was going through a change, and she wanted the help. When i she did . Yes. When i decided to have the conversation with her, she was relieved that i was willing to talk about, you know, finances and what do we do with the house and so on. Shes an only child. Thats burdensome at the same time and also you dont have a lot of other siblings complicating what to do. It can be a plus or mine us. Sometimes the complications is a different point of view which be can be helpful or they can talk in a way you cant. At the same time, you have this on your own, but you know youre doing this directly from what she wants. I think what is also important is to Pay Attention that you raised the issue of independence. Even when youre helping, you dont want to take away a persons independence. It is who they are their identity, their role in the family. So what you go for the strength. What are they still able to do . How can they help you manage what needs to be done so that the theyre still feeling respected and have a purpose and meaning. Thats what this whole thing is about.
