movement to end her own life. tamron hall has the latest. good morning to you. >> good morning everyone. brittany maynard made the decision after being diagnosed with brain cancer. she went through with her promise, dying peacefully surrounded by loved ones. brittany maynard made her final facebook post saturday writing, good bye to my dear friends and family that i love. today is the day i have chosen to pass away in the face of my terminal illness. this terrible brain cancer that has taken so much from me but would have taken so much more. the story of the 29-year-old diagnosed with terminal brain cancer made headlines when she moved to oregon to take advantage of that state's death with dignity act. a video explaining her decision to end her life on november 1 went viral with nearly 10 million views on youtube. >> i don't have to die the way that it's been described to me that my brain tumor would take me. >> last week a new video, eluding to a possible delay. >> if november 2 comes along and i'm still alive i know we'll be moving forward as a family like out of love for each other and that the decision will come later. >> overnight a statement from an end of life organization associated with maynard read in part, she chose to abbreviate the dying process by taking the aid in dying medication she received months ago. she died as she intended, peacefully in the arms of her loved ones. there were heart felt tweets about her passing. her story compassion and fight will never leave me. she modeled the bravery of facing death with dignity. she, not cancer had the last word. she thanks family and close friends she called her ring of support before ending with a final message. good-bye world. spread good energy. pay it forward. her official owe bitary released reading she left this world with zero regrets on time spent, places been, or people she loved in her 29 years. >> seize the day. what's important to you, what do you care about, what matters. >> controversial but what a remarkable young woman to share it with everyone took a lot of courage. move on now. the weather is a big story. that brutal cold being felt by tens of millions across the east this morning. that after a nasty storm brought snow all the way from maine to the deep south. today's dylan dreyer is in a very chilly bangor, maine. i recognize that winter coat. i didn't think it would be out this early. >> reporter: me neither. you know, you left it was warm, you come back and it feels like the heart of winter. i know you were not gone that long. but it's not just me. even hardy new englanders say this snowstorm hit way too early and they are right. we have 14 1/2 inches of snow on the ground here in bangor, maine. that's typically what you see around christmas, not right after halloween. power crews were out trying to restore power to the more than 100,000 people that lost it. and it's not just the show but the cold stretches all the way down south. judging by this it's hard to believe that winter is still more than six weeks away. in bangor, maine this morning they are waking up to more than a foot of snow. mid fall and already heavy snow and 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts are making highways look downright wintry. snow dusting pumpkins and covering foliage, days after halloween. >> it's funny, yesterday you can see i was out cleaning my leaves up out of -- putting away garden beds. what a difference a day makes. >> in foxborough, massachusetts white weather could keep patriots fans down. >> this is football weather. >> more than 50,000 runners bundled up for the new york city marathon with low temperatures and wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour. making an already brutal 26.2 miles even more difficult. even for the professionals. >> very strong run. >> i feel like i fought the whole way. it's tough conditions. >> even the south couldn't escape early snow. cold temperatures from georgia to the carolinas. skiers reveling in the second earliest opening on record at north carolina's sugar mountain ski resort. >> great. they are great. just getting them warmed up for the rest of the season. >> so cold records were set in florida, yes, florida where cold air brought new lows to miami, daytona beach and orlando. so of course november wasn't off to a great start this weekend but the good news is we should already start to turn the corner, by this afternoon temperatures at least should rebound across the south and into the mid-atlantic. >> that's right. get back to normal. thank you so much. warm up. now we're also watching a major system coming out from the south. this is going to be a big impact for a wide swath for election day. from del rio, texas, dallas, on into houston and into oklahoma. we're talking some areas picking up 3 to 5 inches of rain and that's going to be spreading to the north. we've got another major system coming onshore into the pacific northwest. and that area is going to be looking over 48 hours from 3 to 6 inches of rain. that moisture down south, that's going to be making its way here into the northeast, and we may be looking at another storm system coming up this weekend. >> yeah. >> happy dance. >> all right, al. thank you. in the meantime, we're learning more this morning about what may have led to the tragic crash of a virgin galactic space plane during a test flight. in a moment we'll talk to the company's founder sir richard branson. first, nbc's jacob ras cone has the latest on the investigation. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. the ntsb wants to be clear these new facts don't yet tell us the official cause of the crash, that will take months and longer. but we now know video and flight data in and outside the cockpit appear to show mistakes by both man and machine. the unexpected announcement came overnight. a break in the investigation into virgin galactic's failed test flight that killed one pilot and injured another. the ntsb's acting chairman saying the tails or feathers of the space plane which are only supposed to deploy as the aircraft kree enters the atmosphere, deployed before the plane got into space. the ntsb saying video from inside the cockpit shows the copilot michael alsbury who died in the crash unlocked the feathers seconds after the plane's rocket ignited which is too soon. but the feathers don't deploy simply because they are unlocked. that requires a second lever. video and flight data confirm nobody pulled that lever. the feathers deployed on their own. seconds later the aircraft came apart. >> we are a long way from finding cause, we still have months and months of investigation to do, a lot that we don't know. >> it broke apart at 45,000 feet and this is the biggest piece of what is left. what would have carried six space tourists and two pilots into suborbit. more than 700 people have already bought tickets for a future space flight including justin bieber, katy perry and leonardo dicaprio. the travel community is mourning the loss of alsbury. >> he was a friend and colleague colleague. to all of us. never gets replaced. >> reporter: and the recovering pilot is recovering after surgery, he is well enough to talk to doctors but not yet to investigators. we expect that he may prove to be an integral part of understanding, matt, what actually happened on board that flight. >> all right, jacob, thank you very much. sir richard branson the founder of virgin galactic. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> i know it's early and the ntsb is saying it's going to take a long time to have concrete answers bse preliminary ideas that the copilot on this flight may have started the process of the tails or those feathers at the wrong time, have you seen that video, can you confirm that? >> i haven't seen the video myself. the ntsb or leading the investigation, and we don't buy exactly what they tell us. but if the deployment did take place early, obviously they are indicating that may well -- that may well be the cause. but we need them to examine that further and let us know. >> i know you're taking a wait-and-see approach, sir richard, but people are already wondering whether this accident and the death of this copilot is a crippling blow. there have been delays, setbacks in the past with this program. can virgin galactic survive the image seen around the world of that space vehicle coming apart at 45,000 feet? >> i think that if we can find what the ntsb pointing to, if that ends up to be the case, that is something which is easy to fix. and we can make absolutely certain that it cannot be done again in the future. so i think you know, we have a wonderful spacecraft, spaceship, wonderful engineers trying to make history and -- they are not going to 0 -- they are going to move forward and create a spaceship company that will be hopefully one day the marvel of the world. yes, it's been a horrible setback, particularly obviously for michael's family. and for mike himself. but we owe to the him to continue and that we will do. >> even as you say we owe to the him, i'm thinking back to the early days of the nasa programs going into space and it seemed at that time though they had tragic loss of life as well, that was about the advancement of science, it was about that giant leap for mankind and rightly or wrongly, people don't see your program in the same light. they think it's more of an expensive thrill ride. so is it worth the risks? >> absolutely it's worth the risks. our program is about many different things. first of all, it's about giving the millions of people who would like to go to space the chance to go to space. secondly, it's about putting up massive arrays of satellites to enable the 3 billion people who don't have mobile phone or internet access or wi-fi access to get them. third, it's about with point-to-point travel in the future in an environmentally friendly way in a fraction of the time it takes today. i can carry on. so, it's a grand program which has had a horrible seat back, but i don't think anybody watching this would want us to abandon it at this stage. >> >> i'm feeling great, so blessed to be in this amazing city. i have to thank mayor rahm emanual and the entire city for backing me. 65,000 fans joined me on the street here. what an amazing honor it was. >> what strikes me in watching these things, nik, you walk across that wire like you're walking to the bus stop or to the starbucks. you are so calm, cool and collected. was there never really a moment that you felt a little fear, that your heart rate went up a little bit? >> you know, there's no time for fear. i have to stay focused on what i'm doing. if let fear enter into my body that's when an accident can happen. i try to remain very positive and very focused and train properly. it's really about training and preparation, knowing i would be successful making this walk. i never would have taken that first step if i wasn't fully confident. >> that said, you were going to do a selfie at one point but decided not to. is that because conditions weren't sufficient to do that? >> there were a couple of big gusts of winds that hit me in the face and stood me upright. i was leaning into it. and i thought maybe i shouldn't do this. three-quarters of the way up, jim cantore warned me i was going to face more fierce winds coming off that building. to be honest, in the excitement or anxiousness, i wanted to get up there because i wanted to see how bad it was going to be. and at the end i thought i did that really quick. i should have stopped. but all's well that end's well. glad to be on solid ground. >> the next walk you did, of course, blindfolded. what's that like to have that sense taken from you? how important is your vision in doing what you do? how many adjustments did you have to make? >> up until recently i thought it was impossible to walk a wire without vision. my parents always told me to focus on the other end, that's the solid rock, and focus on that. you'll make it across to the other side. to take that important element out was extremely challenging and wire walking was definitely second nature to me. seven generations, it's in my blood. but definitely challenging mentally. it's very, very draining. there was no time to think about it. i knew i had to get over that wire. basically i told myself i'm going to torture you mentally for 2 1/2 minutes but i know you're going to make it safely to the other side because you're prepared. i jumped on that cable and here i am this morning. >> you make it look so easy. i know you're planning your next big stunt. feel free to let us in on what it is. do you feel in your heart you will know when enough is enough or do you feel that pressure to always be topping yourself? >> no, i really do feel like i'll know when enough is enough. it may be soon. my great grandfather did lose his life and it had to do with his physical ability. it wasn't his age but he couldn't hold on. i have been trained to hold on to that wire. knowing that that wire is there. if there's ever too much or anything i'll go down and hold on and wait for my guys. i do think there will be a time. when you think it's time, i told my family, let me know and i'll give it up. >> your encore performance, have you planned it? >> i'm working on re-creating my great grandfather's greatest walk in georgia, he did two head stands on the wire. i've never done a head stand on the wire in public. i'm training for that. i want to re-create that walk. i want to walk the wire with my great grandfather. >> nik wallenda, thank you so much. some of us can't do a head stand anywhere. >> i speak for the room, i think. i don't want to see him do a head stand. it's too nerve racking. >> can't he take up other hobbies? why is there water in your eyes? >> i just was so excited and hoping everything would be okay. when i laid my eyes on her i just was like there you are. >> she is so cute. >> she looks a lot like mike. the only thing i think vale has from me is the cheeks. every parent wants to shout it from the roof top. kw felt lucky that we got to do that. they don't send you a manual with what to do. mike practiced with the car seat and getting it into the car. we were struggling to get that car seat out of the stroller. mike had made a little sign on the computer that said welcome home vale and he put it in her crib which i thought was really cute. the first month or so i really checked out. it just felt important to totally focus on her and on family. everybody on the show came by and saw her. i pretty much didn't leave the house. if you wanted to see me or the baby you had to come to our apartment. she is a good eater but like her parents she likes to snack. she is drunk on milk. when she was 3 weeks old my mom and i were hanging on the play mat and she kind of rolled over. i asked my doctor what level of brilliance are we talking about. she said that is a fluke, don't get too excited. learning to give her a bath was a huge challenge. she cried and then i fed her and then i cried because it was so stressful. >> that feel good. >> now vale loves her bath. she can sit in it all day long. >> you know how much i love you? >> it will surprise no one that mike is an awesome dad. he makes funny faces and making the corny jokes. >> i feel like i can tell you anything too. >> wow. >> i definitely don't want to paint a completely rosy picture. it's hard. >> you know we didn't get any sleep last night? >> you get very very exhausted. i'm terrified to come back to a job where i have to speak for a living because i honestly have a very hard time right now putting basic sentences together. you can do it. matt would be so gracious about that. he would never tease me. you smell good. i was thinking a lot about coming back to work and it's bittersweet. because this time has felt so precious and magical. i'm going to work. i'll miss you every second. feel like a different person in a lot of ways and i hope a better person for sure. because now i'm a mom. >> you woke her up this morning to tell her good-bye? >> yes. that true love i realized, was the love that was missing inside of myself. >> reporter: for yourself? >> for myself. >> reporter: causing her, she says to make choices that were hurtful for her, starting years before. you write in the book about a scene when you're on the phone with your boyfriend and your agent is watching you plead with the boyfriend on the phone for yourself and then you come back into the room and she says wow, you have self esteem issues. >> right. >> reporter: you never had contemplated that you had low self esteem? >> no. i thought i was the tough girl from the bronx, had it all together. i was out in hollywood. nobody -- i had so much common sense and street smarts and all that kind of stuff. >> reporter: how does that work? someone has low self esteem but they're on television they're confident enough -- >> in one area. >> reporter: right. they're on stage, looking sexy, looking hot and that doesn't go with low self esteem. >> i had this confidence in what i could do. i did not have so much confidence in who i was and what i had to offer just as a girl. >> reporter: can you work to figure out why you thought you were so unworthy in love? >> it's still a work in progress for me. it's how you feel as a child. being a middle child and being invisible sometimes and trying to get the attention. what did i do? i overachieved. i ran track and won medals every weekend or i would go on the show and steal the show. that would give me a confidence. but there was a part of me that just wanted love that just wanted to be you know -- that felt like she wasn't worthy of love which is why she was trying to do all this stuff. >> reporter: she says that's why when one romance ended she would jump right into another without a break, always mistaking passion for real love. >> reporter: gives me a little comfort and gives me a little -- we have a little chemistry, boom we're in. >> reporter: when you broke up with ben afflec marc anthony was there and, boom you were in. >> you're right. probably my first big heartbreak and one of my friends that came into my life and said i'm here. what you need to know is nobody can save you or heal you. only you can do that for you. >> reporter: and now she's doing it. for the first time in her adult life jenny from the block is living single. breaking from boyfriend casper smart earlier this year. you're alone now. >> yes. >> reporter: are you scared about that? >> yeah i do. i get scared. >> reporter: you get scared? >> yeah i get scared. it's not normal for me. but i also know that i can't make decisions based on the fear so that when a person does show up i'm like this is so nice. yeah come on. let's move in together you know. or i go let's get to know each other. are you good enough for my kids? >> in your visits here it's occurred to me that you're kind of a private person. in a book like this by its very nature you have to reveal things about yourself. were you worried about that? >> yes, absolutely. i used to think i could never write a book because i don't want to talk about that person phoning at 4:00 in the morning drunk. then you realize you don't have to include that story. and, secondly my wife died a couple of years ago and, you know i had also lost my parents when i was young. >> and i think a brother. >> and a brother. >> within a short period of time. >> within a short period of time. i had lost three members of my family by 20 and i had to figure out how to be happy because my natural orientation was to be happy. then at 60 the same thing. i thought oh, i see a book. >> you write about nancy. one of the things i loved reading about, she was very funny. >> hilarious. >> very funny. >> you tell a story about how when you would two would argue, she would demand to speak to ed grimly. >> she liked ed grimly better than me. at times -- ed always sided with her. so she would say, i don't want to talk to you. you're being obnoxious. i want to talk to ed. oh miss nancy, how boring is he? he's so obsessed with himself and, my that's a pretty top you're wearing. okay go away ed. >> done. i win the argument. >> yeah. >> you talk about some of the people you know in hollywood and not in a name droppy way, kind of a matter of fact way but you talk about having a chance to meet some of your idols. you went to broadway and sat next to katherine hepburn. >> i did. >> it didn't go so well? >> no. it was a play "royal family". there's an empty seat beside me and suddenly i hear excuse me get out of my way. move that umbrella, you id not. it's katherine hepburn. i'm thinking i'm not going to say anything. i'm going to be very cool. act one ends and rosemary harris does a dramatic diatribe and i turn to hebburn saying isn't she classy? and she, because i'm talking to her like a real person says she certainly is. you know rosemary has this ability to be real -- very much like the best people you can ever imagine in your life as she's saying that i'm thinking i'm talking to katherine hepburn. i say to her, well miss hepburn, you're no slouch. and she looks at me and says thank you. and then she turns to the person. do you mind if i change seats? >> losing her hair. >> in sixth grade, she's not going to school. >> no, tutored the whole year. >> how did she handle it? >> it bothered her, made her sad. >> after months tethered to a chemo bag, she's now in the final maintenance stage of treatment. she returned to school full time but for some reason she felt the rules had changed. >> some of my friends i used to talk to didn't talk to me. >> why do you think they didn't talk to me? >> because they didn't understand what was going on. >> she was just real quiet. i kept saying is everything okay? she's like yeah. i didn't know if it was her treatment making her tired and wiped out or if someone was picking on her. >> okay. just like yesterday -- >> after being tipped off that cassidy was feeling left out, her english teacher called in an assembly to introduce the kids to cassidy the star, not cassidy the kid with cancer. they began to understand but it didn't grab there. they were inspired to make a second video, of is seventh grade video of what it means to be truly brave starring cassidy. >> we wanted to make the point that she really isn't different from all the other kids. in this version cassidy walks the hallways and sits alone in black and white. her classmates grouped in bright colors ignore her. >> we'll have a few brave students hold up signs that say brave. they realize they can break out of their click. >> walk to the cameras. >> the students spend hours creating their masterpiece. >> camera crews, line up your cards. >> several days later, the big premier. it's cassidy's first time watching the video. >> ghs "truly brave" video. ♪ see your true colors shining through ♪ >> how do you think it changed cassidy? >> believe it or not, you'll start when they're toddlers. it's not one big part. when they're toddlers you use the very correct names for their body parts. >> i tried. they didn't like it. cassidy insisted on wang and jinah. >> she might call her elbow something else, as long as she knows and the kids know what the real language. >> why is it so important to have the real language? >> it teaches them how to be more comfortable in their bodies and we know researchers might not have sex as early as other kids who don't know the right language. it builds a sense of self up. i know what's mine. i know what you and cannot touch, and that's okay. >> according to the new age of puberty for boys i was told you should have their talk before their 9th birth day. now it sounds like sooner. >> in preschool you'll talk in very simple terms. if they ask you questions, you answer honestly. by elementary you want to be talking about anatomy, what intercourse is how man and female bodies fit together like puzzle pieces. >> should you wait till they ask you. some kids just mature later than other kids. you don't want to rush them in -- >> you don't want them finding out on google. >> playground talk right? you want to be able to give them appropriate and true and factual information. but don't overtalk. if they say, hey, will you tell me about blah blah blah and you say sure what do you want to know? they might say nothing, that's okay i'll talk to you about it another time. sometimes we as adults feel like we need to give more information. >> kids don't even get to have a childhood anymore. >> you're racing through everything. >> it's unbelievable to me. >> i think, too, parents worry about having this conversation because they think if i talk to my kids about contraception and about sex, it means i condone it. that's not the case at all. you're still going to talk about your family values and beliefs, that comes init. the studies show that kids who have open communication with their parents about sex are actually less likely to have sex in adolescence. >> by junior high they should know everything? >> by junior high they really need to know. what i see in my practice is kids in junior high, seventh and eighth grade are starting to experiment. i know it's awful to think about. but we want them to be educated. if we start these conversations early so they're open and comfortable with us as parents they'll come back and talk to you and say this is happening, this person is doing that i don't want to do that and start to do "what if" questions. what if all your friends are hooking up and you don't want to, what does that mean?
