and a record performance from prince on saturday night live. one long end, unforgettable eight minute set and setting the internet on the process. today is sunday, november 2, 2014. this is "today" with lester holt and erica hill. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning everyone. welcome to "today" on a sunday. i'm lester holt along side kate snow and dylan jones. erica is a few miles in statton island about to run in this new york city marathon. thank you for sitting in. >> no problem. sitting here is the easy part. go erica go. >> we're excited about this. she's been training for a long time. i think she had to put the prince performance in her ipod. it might help her. >> it was like eight minutes or something. >> she was rocking the house. we're going to share some later as well. weather is our top story with the temperature falling and winds picking up. advisories and alerts in effect across the country. this after the extremely rare early november snow in parts of the south. we said dylan is in maine tracking it for us. what's it like up there? >> reporter: if i go to bermuda for one storm, and this is what i get. back at it in the snow. it's not unusual to snow in early november in maine. it is unusual to get a foot or more this early in the season. normally your first foot or more snowstorm arrives at the end of december closer to christmas. this storm system also produced unusual snow all the way down south. a second storm system produced rain and snow out in california. these two early season snow storms making a mess of both coasts. winds nearly 50 miles per hour slammed into massachusetts late saturday. storm tested new englanders watched the ocean wash over the sea wall. >> we were in the blizzard of '78 so it's nothing new for us. >> reporter: fans in north carolina braved blizzard conditions to watch appalachian state bury georgia state on the snowy field. >> lots of layers. >> reporter: elsewhere in north carolina, a half foot of snow was more than enough to send cars skidding off the road. georgia roads were too in the early hours of saturday morning. it's never snowed this early in columbia, south carolina. temperatures were in the 80s a few days ago. a vacation lodge in the tennessee mountains tweeted these pictures, nearly two feet of snow. in chicago 65 miles per hour wind gusts knocked down poles and swept swells onto the drive. parts in ventura county, it's a heavy mess. 11 homes were evacuated. firefighters rescued a man stuck waist deep >> northern california was unprepared for nearly six inches of snow, so early in the season. >> first snowfall is always the hardest because it hits us the fastest. a lot of people don't really know what to do. >> and we are in the thick of it here in maine right now. heavy rain is falling a little further to our south, especially across cape cod as this storm system makes its way up into the north and east. most of snow we're going to see out of this system is going to fall in down east maine. we're looking at the heaviest snow to arrive now, stick around this afternoon and quickly race around early tomorrow morning. by monday, for the monday morning commute, the precipitation will stop following. in this area of bangor we're looking for 8 to 9 inches of snow. same goes in caribou. i want to at some point out this cold system is dragging in the cold and wind look at our freeze warnings. we've gusted 40 miles per hour wind here. >> that bermuda trip seems so long ago, doesn't it? >> it seems forever ago. >> we'll get the rest of your national forecast. let's take a turn now into the tranlic crash of a virgin galactic space train. the debris spread across five miles in the mojave desert. we have the latest. >> reporter: that second pilot is not physically well enough to speak to investigators yet. he may prove to be an integral part of understanding what happened here as we get our first up close look at the massive debris field. >> the debris field is scattered across five miles of the desert, mostly small unrecognizable pieces of composite materials. this is as far as they want me to go so as not to appear of the investigation. they do not want us to touch any of the pieces of what's left. the largest piece of wreckage landed 20 miles from the space port. of course it was a lot bigger, 60 feet or so long, a wingspan of 30 feet and 18 feet high. this is what would have carried six people plus two pilots. after the first day, in the first of its kind investigation, the ntsb is confirming what photographs of the accident appear to show, the space plane came about during flight. >> the question is why did that happen that's what we're exploring. >> friday's explosion killed co-pilot michael als bury. now the first person to die during a commercial space flight. and the other test pilot, siebold parachuted out and was injured. >> this is sometimes just what happens is what some in the industry have say. more than 700 people have already paid a quarter million dollar eaches for a ticket aboard the space plane. >> when i heard about it, it was shocking, a punch in the gut. it doesn't give me any pause other than the fact that i know that there's going to be a couple of years delay in my flight to space. >> nbc has an agreement with virgin galactic to tell he vice -- televise the initial flight with passengers. >> it could be a big setback. >> this is a big week in politics. the last minute scramble for votes ahead of tuesday's mid term elections. at stake, the balance of power in the u.s. senate and a lot of voters wondering what will change if republicans take control. here's is kristen welker. >> it's the final push before election day, president obama campaigning for senate candidate gary peters who is expected to beat his opponent. >> when you step in your voting booth, you are making a choice about two different visions of what america is about. >> with his approval ratings in the low 40s, most democrats don't want the president anywhere near them on the campaign trail. in the battle ground states of iowa, colorado, and north carolina, he's been noticeably absent but this election could be do or die as he hits the final stretch of his presidency. >> democrats in the senate have protected this kind of protective shield for president obama for the past six years. if he loses that, he's going to have a much harder final two years of tenure. >> what could change if republicans pick up the six seats they need to win the senate? republican and democratic sources say lawmakers and the white house could work to find some modest common ground on prek education, minimum wage and taxes and trade. minority leader mitch mcconnell has backed off the battle cry of repeeling obama. >> i would like to put the senate democrats in the position of voting the most unpopular parts of this law and see if we can put it on the president's desk. >> but of course the president has veto power, meaning any major changes to his signature health care law are unlikely. also unlikely passing big pieces of legislation like immigration reform. but first it's up to the voters. and chuck todd is moderator of meet the press. chuck, kborng good morning. >> it's good to be up here. >> let's catch up on what everybody needs to know on tuesday. you've got a lot of really tight races where we don't know which way it's going to go. >> it's amazing. we talk about all this potential republican momentum. they might win the senate, eight of the ten battle ground states in the senate are apology less than 5 points. the math for the republicans is in their favor but it's not guaranteed because there's some uncertainty with the voters. they want to punish the president. they are not happy with him. they haven't bought what the republicans are selling. >> people are just frustrated with the system right now. >> they are angry at incumbents, at washington, they don't like the dysfunction, what we're seeing is incumbent republican governors are struggling, in kansas -- if you are in power, you are not being trusted and people are unhappy. >> and because of that, you are seeing a lot of third party candidates, independents getting in there. >> we have the kansas race, which may be the epitome of this. greg orman, this independent, neck and neck, a long time incumbent is pat roberts. we're seeing libertarian candidates and other candidates, they are polling above normal because they are none of the above. >> what about what kristen was talking about. what happens if, we don't know how it's going to go, if republicans get control of the senate, they got the house already, what does that look like? >> that's been part of the frustrate -- republican candidates think they haven't closed the dale, they don't have nothing to run in. they don't know what the republican agenda is going to be if they get control of the house and senate. the question does it get antagonistic? the republicans say we've got to show our brand is a mess, we only won this because we weren't him. we got to show we can do that. if they want to do that, taxes is possible. there are small things that can be done. the 2016 race is looming and it's very possible it starts so quickly that it just drowns out anything in washington. >> it's going to be an interesting night on tuesday. >> i think it's going to be election two months, it could take us two months to know who controls the senate or not. >> because of recounts. >> recounts, run-offs. it's going to be a wild night. >> you'll be there for all of it, chuck. we'll talk to you a little bit later about previewing what's coming on "meet the press." we begin in the bahamas are authorities are investigating what caused a cruise ship to run aground on its way to palm beach, florida. it happened friday night. the cruise line says the 960 passengers aboard the bahama celebration were told to put on their life veses. the passengers were spherried to miami. a cruise scheduled for tomorrow has been schedule -- has didn't canceled. now to maine, a deadly house fire that ripped through a party house. five people were killed after a halloween party. at least seven people were able to escape. one person is in critical condition at a burn unit in boston. >> a young man jumped off the porch. he was totally engulfed with flames. he was rolling on the ground. >> the fire completely gutted the 90-year-old structure which housed two apartments. investigators looked to see if there was any code violations in the house. a ride at walt disney world will be open today after it caught on fire last night. a park goer captured this on a cell phone. officials think that ash from a show landed on top of the ride. it was a heart warming reunion after the dallas nurse reunited with her dog. pham was the first person who contract ebola in the united states. bentley as you can see was super excited to see her again. shawrg her with kisses. >> it's like christmas literally. it's such a joyous occasion. >> she says bentley turns two this month and she's excited to pick out his gift. it's so heart warming to see these videos. often sometimes when veterans return home and they see their dogs or cats or any pets, there's something special. >> unconditional love. >> i was covering ebola in dallas and people care so much about the dog. >> they are close to us. i have been spanked by viewers here twitter. it's bangor, maine. >> i was born there. so i know. >> we say all that because we want to go to dylan who was in bangor, maine, with the rest of the forecast. >> don't worry, lester. appalachian has been a word messing me up. i am in the snowstorm. there are thousands of people running the new york city marathon. it's going to be sunny and dry. very windy. we have win advisories in effect. we could see sustained winds 20 to 30 miles per hour and gusts up near 50 good morning. 7:16 the time right now. you can see we're waking up to clear skies. if you haven't switched the clock over we're at 6:16 in case you're watching. i want to take you to hillsburg in north bay because we have chilly air this morning. you may have had to turn the heater on like i did last night. 36 degrees in the north bay. it's chilly and chilly temps will remain in place all day long. and that is your latest forecast. back to you kate and lester. >> dylan, thanks. up next, a brave young woman told she may have weeks to live getting set to play moms know that no two mouths are the same. that's why there's a listerine® product for every mouth. one to clean your whole mouth. one for those hard to reach places. one to protect kids mouths from cavities. even one to freshen breath on-the-go. with over 100 years of innovation in oral care... there's a listerine® product for every mouth in your house. for cleaner, healthier mouths go beyond brushing alone. listerine®. power to your mouth ™. how to shed pounds this winter. there. no more drafts. finally.
