losing control of her car and plummeting 500 yards a ravine. why emergency crews say she owes her life to an app on her will cell phone and mrs. kloon oat case. amal clooney steps into the spotlight without her husband just weeks after their lavish wedding tackling a controversial case hundreds of years in the making. today, wednesday, october 15, 2014. ♪ ♪ ♪ from nbc news, this is "today." with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning. welcome to "today" on this wednesday morning. i'm matt lauer along with fatly morales, tamron hall and al roker. savannah continues on maternity leave and we start with unsettling news on this ebola crisis. >> frightening indeed. >> it is our top story, breaking news from texas. presbyterian hospital who cared for thomas duncan has now been dieing nosed with that virus. kate snow, what can you tell us? good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a total of 77 health care workers at this hospital came into contact in some way with thomas eric duncan. two of them, both women. the newest being a woman, as well are being treated in this hospital for ebola and this morning at a news conference that just happened, a county judge here says well had could be more coming. at the apartment complex where the newest ebola patient lived on her own, city officials started knocking on her neighbor's doors at 7:00 a.m. >> this is a heroic person, a person who dedicated her life and has -- and is dedicating her life on helping others. >> city officials say they learned about the latest case overnight and moved quickly to decontaminate common and outdoor areas. it is unclear exactly when this health care worker entered the hospital, but she came down with a fever on tuesday and was isolated within 90 minutes. all of the health care workers who cared for erric duncan are monitoring either at the hospitals or at well home. >> we have a situation involving 77 people. we are preparing contingencies for more and that is a very real possibility. >> reporter: this new case comes as there are complaints about the hospital. late last night a labor group that represents nurses headquartered in california held a conference call with reporters saying they had heard from several nurses who work at texas health presbyterian hospital and had some of them on the line. the nurses at this hospital are not in any union and they wouldn't give detail on how many nurses they were representing or what roles they held at the hospital. they said the nurses wanted to remain axe nonmouse for fear they might lose their jobs. statements to reporters that were from the anonymous nurses describing what happened when thomas eric duncan arrived by ambulance. >> mr. duncan was left for several hours not in isolation in an area where other patients were present. subsequently a nurse supervisor arrived and demanded that he be moved to an isolation unit. yet faced resistance from other hospital authorities. >> before he was isolated, they said, duncan came into contact with up to seven other patients for at least three day, they said, nurses did not wear pull protective gear, but flimsy generic knowns that exposed their necks. staff moved in and out of the isolation unit without being decontaminated, nurses had only optional training on ebola. this morning a hospital official responded to some of those criticisms saying it's clear there was exposure somewhere, some time in the treatment of duncan, but he said they do not think that they have a systemic institutional problem here. he said hospital staff now do have the appropriate protective gear and no one wants this done right more than they did. the cdc now has a rapid response team here. tom frieden, the head of the cdc said they wish they had done that sooner. if they had they might have prevented others from getting sick. matt? >> kate snow, thank you very much. silvia burrwell is the secretary of health and human services which oversees the centers for disease control. good to see you. good morning. >> good morning, matt. >> a second health care worker at texas health presbyterian hospital in dallas has now tested positive for ebola. do you have complete confidence in that facility that that facility can can treat these two patients now and give them the the best chance of survival while maintaining protocols that will prevent this virus from spreading even further? >> first, i want to express our thoughts and prayers with both of the patients and all of the health care workers that are treating those patients both at the hospital as well as the state and local and federal officials supporting them. >> with regard to the protocols that are in place, right now as the cdc director announced yesterday we have added additional staff from the cdc, two of the nurses from the the emory facility that treated dr. brantly are there on site to do peer to peer training. there is a 24/7 site manager who will be overseeing the way that the equipment is put on and taken off. >> with all due respect, madam secretary, you're not answering my question. >> do you have complete confidence that that facility can successfully treat these two patients without spreading this virus further some. >> matt, what we have put in place are what we believe oversight and assistance in the implementation of the protocols that we know can work and have worked over 30 years in terms of fighting ebola. >> we've got some non-union nurses going to labor o fishes in nursing industries saying look, there were no protocols. we had nurses leaving the isolation unit without being decontaminated. wouldn't it be safer and more prudent right now to take these two patients and move them to one of those four special isolation units in some other location like emory or in nebraska, just until you can check, double-check and triple check the protocols, the procedures and the facilities in dallas? >> matt, what we'll be doing is making sure that with regard to the patients we have two things that are priorities that we work with our local chinning in clin we're providing the best care for those patients and we're doing everything we can to protect health care workers. we will keep all options and krrgzs right now, the first patient, the first health care worker is being treated in the hospital and the second is in isolation there. we will ton monitor the situation, and our people are on staff, on site doing that right now. >> let me ask you about the comments from dr. frieden from the cdc who now admitted that the cdc did not act strongly enough, they did not send a robust enough infection control unit to that dallas hospital. this stunned me, madam secretary, because we've been talking about the outbreak of ebola in west africa for months and we've been talking about the fears of it coming to this country and now we have the head of the cdc saying when it did come to this country and presented in the person of mr. duncan in dallas the cdc did not do enough, how can that be some. >> the cdc sent a team in place and sent a team of epideem yol gists and infection control people and what i think we could have done much better is the oversight of the implementation -- >> do you have confidence in the cdc and dr. frieden. >> i do have confidence in the cdc and dr. frieden. we will be september 11th a flight team to maintain the oversight and the implementation of the protocols that we know have worked whether that's in nigeria or the previous cases that have happened in emory and nebraska. >> silvia burwell. i know you're busy. thanks for your time this morning. >> happy to be here. thank you, matt. >> natalie? >> matt, thanks. the deadly storms that have hammered the south this week took aim on parts of north carolina with heavy rain and damaging winds overnight and this morning the severe weather threat is shifting into the northeast and today, dylan dreier is in north carolina. >> as the system spreads east it's starting to transition into a heavy rain event which is what we're starting to see here in durham. from here on out we're not going to see as many strong, gusty wind reports. unfortunately and sadly the same cannot be said for areas in the south. charles wynton, a marine and father of four was will killed when a tornado hit his home. we spoke with his family. this wasn't the first tornado to tear through juliana ornsby's hometown of arkansas, but it was the first time her home was directly in one's path. >> i feel like it's a nightmare that's not stopping. >> she and two of her siblings were home with their parents when the ef-2 tornado tore through their neighborhood. the 111-mile per hour wind blowing their house to pieces. >> all i saw was a wall all coming at me and my bed flipping me through the air. >> all three children and their mother survived the storm. eddie, a former marine, did not. >> he went through two tours in iraq and a tornado killed him. >> he's gone. everything that -- he's not going to be able to do now. he's not going to be able on see any of us graduate or walk me down the aisle. >> the children's mother remains in critical condition this morning after undergoing surgery on tuesday, suffering neck, back, lung, spleen and liver damage. the children suffering bad bruises and cuts, but mostly in a state of shock, remembering their father and hoping their mother survives. >> she's my hero. if i lose her, too, i don't know what i'll do. >> such a heartbreaking story. as i mentioned before, heavy rain is now going to be the big concern, but we still could see an isolated wind gust up to 40 to 50 miles per hour, but it's really the flash flooding that will remain an issue as this storm makes its way into the mid atlantic and eventually up into the northeast. al? >> that's right, dylan, thank you so much. in fact, just a little while ago we had a tornado warning up for parts of about 50 miles west of washington, d.c. we have the severe thunderstorm warning there damaging winds. some of the tornadoes are brief and could be wrapped in rain and hard to see. the baltimore, washington, area. this system will be pushing through rather quickly and we could see moisture wrapped, and we're talking one to two inches and it could be up to four inches of rain especially as you get on up into new england. and here is the latest on gonsalvo and it's 665 miles south-southwest of bermuda and 1 125-mile-per-hour winds and we expect it could become a category 4 storm by wednesday and it takes aim west of bermuda. so we'll continue to rack this because they, as we said they got hit by fay last week and now a storm with 120-mile-per-hour winds could be devastating. >> thanks very much. tamron is here with new air vibings against isis overnight. >> a u.s.-led coalition launched a massive round of air strikes against isis in and around the the syrian town of kobani due to the ongoing threat with turkey. the militants who have besieged the town for weeks were still on the attack. violence erupted in hong kong again this morning as police clash with protesters. officers armed with pepper spray pushed back the crowds and the operation came after a large group of protesters blockade tunnel expanding their protest zone. 45 people had been arrested in today's clashes. >> a frightening scene played out late tuesday night on a casino-bound tour bus after a man stabbed two passengers. the suspect was later shot and killed by a state trooper. a passenger reportedly attacked two people. the bus driver pulled into a construction zone where a state trooper was actually stationed. police say that trooper shot the suspect outside the bus when he refused to stop his weapon. one of the stabbing victims was also hit by a bullet, but is expected to be okay. now to the cliffside rescue in northern california. a young woman drove off a mountain was plucked to safety after spending nearly a day trapped in a ravine. nbc's miguel almaguer has the report. >> reporter: the daring rescue came in the nick of time. melissa vasquez hoisted to safety after plunging 500 yards in her car down a cliff. when emergency responders found the 28-year-old she had been ejected laying face down in a ravine. >> their timely response was key in getting melissa to regional medical center of san jose. vasquez was driving across this mountain road monday when she flew over an embankment. police say her onstar system alerted authorities to the accident. investigators used a find my iphone, a device from her ipad to pinpoint her general location. 15 hours later, rescue teams found her in thick brush after a night alone. >> technology had a large part to do with this. not only in her having that on her phone and having the ipad, but my ability to take screen shots and get those screen shots out to searchers within minutes of me locating where she was. >> airlifted to a local hospital, vasquez is suffering from serious injuries, but this morning doctors say she'll survive. a dramatic crash with an incredible rescue. for "today" miguel almaguer, nbc news, los angeles. >> what a story, and by the way, two pretty incredible catches in tuesday night's mlb playoff game and only one of them came from a player. adam jones hit the foul ball toward the seats, but royals third baseman is there to make an unbelievable catch, over the rails. yeah, right? that is amazing. there were fans there to catch him, but earlier, take a look at this in the game. it was a tv cameraman with the catch. >> are you kidding me? he makes the one-handed catch without the glove without losing focus, by the way, on his job. they had three games and zero leads in that series and that is awesome and some fishermen hoping to get some bite had serious competition in north carolina. i think you know where this is going. about a hundred sharks in the midst of a feeding frenzy. they look like birds. they were targeting a group of bluefish. the men kept their distance, but still managed to reel in some dinner for ems thises and the sharks got some too, so everybody is happy. it's 7:16. >> sharnado 3. >> when are they going to call us? santa is here. incredible neiman marcus christmas book. things you can't afford. or most of us can't but incredible. >> that's early. >> you and i grew up -- >> no question. >> those cars. >> oh, they were my favorite way to spend the weekend. >> let's go inside tamron is at the news desk. got all the headlines. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news from texas where a second health care worker who treated thomas eric duncan has been diagnosed with ebola. nbc's national correspondent kate snow is in dallas. kate, good morning. >> tamron, good morning. we're learning more at this hour about the woman health care worker who is the second to be infected with ebola. she's being treated here at the hospital. she lived on her own, in an apartment complex just a few miles from here. overnight officials learned about this case, and by 7:00 a.m. this morning local time they were knocking on doors of her neighbors handing out flyers to reassure the public. now they've already been decontaminating the public areas of this apartment complex. it's unclear exactly when this woman came to the hospital. but we're told she began running a temperature yesterday, and within 90 minutes of arriving at the hospital was in isolation. she is one of 77 workers at the hospital who came into contact with thomas eric duncan. the man who died last week. they're all monitoring their temperatures now, either here at the hospital, or at home. a county official warns that there may be more cases to come. meantime nurse nina pham says she's doing well. she says she thinks she has the best team in the world of doctors and nurses here. the cdc is investigating the procedures used at the hospital. but this morning, a hospital official says they have the appropriate gear now, and there are no systemic or institutional problems. >> all right, kate, thank you very much. earlier today, health and human services secretary silva burwell told matt what steps are being taken with local hospitals to make sure they properly handle any ebola cases. >> first, that there's appropriate identification when there's entry into a lot. say, for example, in an emergency room or other entry point. and then the second is, once that patient is identifying and a confirmed case of ebola, that we have appropriate treatment in place. cdc will be on the phone from the start and be flying in immediately when we understand that there is a case. >> secretary burwell also told matt she has service in cdc director tom frieden who admitted tuesday that his agency could have done more when the first ebola patient was diagnosed in dallas. a second day of violent weather brought record rainfall and at least two tornadoes to the atlanta area. high winds knocked down trees and sent large limbs crashing through rooftops. power lines were also pulled down leaving about 50,000 customers without electricity. we are now less than three weeks from the midterm elections, and with that in mind nbc news and "wall street journal" are out with a new poll about voter attitudes. chuck todd is nbc's political director and of course moderator of "meet the press." what have we learned? the folks at good house keeping put them to the test. how are you? >> i'm great. >> let's talk about halloween and costumes. you put costumes to the test. >> we have a controlled chamber where we took swachs of eight of what we thought were most popular costumes and set them on fire. federal regulations state if it goes up in flames in under 3.5 seconds it is dangerously flammable. we did have a costume that failed the test this year. >> this is the costume right here. this is a costume, a barbie costume. >> it is a barbie princess costume. the danger is that the lining -- you will see it is a papery feeling lining. that went up in flames in under 3.5 seconds. we tested it ten times and then we sent it to an outside lab that was recognized by the consumer products safety commission and confirmed our results. this is still available online. i caution parents if you purchased this costume our engineers say cut out the lining. that is really the dangerous aspect of this costume. >> we did get a response from the maker of the costume. they said in their testing in 2007 that it did pass their tests but the costume was discontinued in 2008 and it still can be found. >> we found it online. it still is available for purchase. my caution to parents if you have this costume, cut out the lining. >> the rest works. >> the rest is okay. let's move on. we did find safe costumes. >> anna from "frozen". >> this costume is great. you want to look for synesthetic fibers in general, decorations like glitter tend to be dangerous. when we set this on fire it melted. it didn't burn. the sleeves did ignite but they extinguished very quickly. >> you have to be concerned with sleeves, then. >> absolutely. fabrics like this do tend to burn but this passed our safety test. it is not considered dangerous. >> i glitter, which is a concern but not in this case? >> you cannot tell how flammable something is by looking at it, and this seems to be a hazard but snow white is safe, it passed the test and it met federal regulations. >> that's great. beautiful. now tell me about this. >> sparkle witch. again, it's sparkly but not a concern? you're the father of a son as well. it must have -- going home to your child, it must make you want to hug them that much more. >> for -- i don't know however long. reading a script where a child was in jeopardy, it's impossible to do. you don't even want to -- you don't want to have it enter your imagination at all. but this was such a profound story, i thought. an interesting way of telling the story. the music is really inspiring, what they do there. obviously as a parent, trying to deal with all the violence that we have in our country right now, a lot of it is violence that i didn't experience growing up in school. and i was talking to anton and he said, you know, they had to live with the idea of shootings and mass killings on a daily basis in school. so, as a parent, you want to figure out, what's going on?
