Officials underestimated isis and overestimated the ability of the iraqi army to take on that terror group. Nbcs chief Foreign CorrespondentRichard Engel is in turkey along the syrian border. Richard, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, this seemed to be a very candid interview, the president blamed the former u. S. Backed Iraqi Government for allowing isis to flourish and said american intelligence didnt fully appreciate the threat. The u. S. Military reportedly launched more air strikes overnight, after pounding isis in syria over the weekend targeting the militants, their Oil Facilities and armored vehicles. But isis isnt in retreat in syria. Its fighters are advancing on cities close to the turkish border. And in iraq, the militants are again reportedly on the edge of baghdad. On sunday president obama told 60 minutes u. S. Intelligence failed to see it coming. Well, i think our head of the intelligence community, jim clapper, acknowledged that they underestimated what had been taking place in syria. He didnt say that just say that we underestimated isil. He said we overestimated the ability and the will of our allies, the iraqi army, to fight. Thats true. Thats absolutely true. Its a major intelligence failure. Islamic radicals expanding in syria and iraq for two years. They bragged about their growing strength on line, 14 journalists often reported that foreign fighters were streaming into syria. We interviewed them as they went in. The rise of extremism in syria and iraq was no secret, now the president said america is leading the fight against the radicals. America leads. We are the indispensable nation, we have capacity no one else has, our military is the best in the history of the world. And when trouble comes up anywhere in the world, they dont call beijing, they dont call moscow, they call us. Reporter so the u. S. Is now leading an International Coalition against isis, and likely will be for years. Matt. Rich arld engle, those comments making headlines and they are going to continue. There will be more fallout over the coming days. Also now to the medical mystery in colorado where a group of children is showing poliolike symptoms including paralysis. The question, could those symptoms be linked to the dangerous Virus Outbreak that has spread from ten states three weeks ago to now 40 and washington, d. C. Hally jackson is in colorado. Good morning. Reporter good morning. The cdc says its concerned about what its calling this cluster of kids so many children showing these same symptoms at the same time and in the same place. Nine children have been treated at this hospital for a week or even paralyzed arms or leg, and were learning there may be a tenth child showing the same symptoms at a different colorado hospital. At this denver play ground the kids all smiles, some parents on edge. It actually terrifies me having three kids and one who has severe asthma. A common cold is no longer a common cold. Reporter nearby the hospital where doctors say nine children showed symptoms similar to polio. At least four of those kids tested positive for enterovirus 68, a rare strain of a common virus that acts like a bad cold and can make it hard to breathe. This year enterovirus 68 has been confirmed in 277 people, mostly children. Across 40 states, plus d. C. It is a bit of a mystery right now but like any other mystery, we have some clues. Reporter this doctor says the nine children in colorado are up to date on polio vaccinations, still they are trying to figure out if there is some link to enter ro virus 68 a similar cluster of cases hit california in 2012. Thats when this child had trouble breathing before his left leg stopped working. He was never tested for the enterovirus but diagnosed with poliolike syndrome. It was the hardest thing that i think i heard. Erin understands what the families are going through. My whole purpose is to let these families know theres hope. Reporter hope this medical mystery may be solved soon. The cdc wants doctors now across the country to report seeing any similar clusters of kids dealing with these symptoms, muscle weakness, pa ralties. Three children are stilling treated at this hospital. So far no deaths have been linked but the agency is doing tests after a toddler in new jersey died after a respiratory illness. New questions about the secret service and its ability to protect the president. A searing report in the Washington Post claims the agency grossly mishandled a shooting that occurred at the white house in 2011. Nbcs Kristen Welker has more on that. Dp good morning. Reporter good morning. The president and first lady were infuriated with the way the secret service handled that shooting and this comes as the agency is already investigating an unprecedented secure breach earlier this month when a man jumped over the fence of the white house with a knife and entered the unlocked front door. With the secret service under scrutiny for this fence jumping intruder new revelations about gun shots fired into the executive mansion three years ago. This is where investigators believe the shots came from. Reporter the Washington Post reports back in november of 2011, Oscar Hernandez fired a semiautomatic rifle at the white house while parked a quarter mile away. Initially there was confusion. A supervisor that night on duty calls out stand down, disregard, its just a construction noise. Reporter it took four days for the agency to realize the white house had been hit seven times. The discovery came only after a house keeper found broken glass on the truman balcony. There appears to be a bullet lodged in a window sill and certainly a bullet hole in one of the Central Glass windows. That is, again, right outside the familys living room. Reporter sasha was home at the time with her grandmother. The president and first lady were traveling and didnt find out for several days. It was an usher who told the first lady assuming she already knew. Aides have described the president and she as both fuming. Reporter a secret Service Official says an investigation was launched immediately, other Law Enforcement agencies were notified. Hernandez was arrested and is now serving time in jail. I know the secret service is on top of this and will take every step to correct problems. Reporter but on capitol hill concern. I got serious questions about the leadership and protocol of the secret service. They have had far too many problems. This is not something that is acceptable. Reporter secret Service DirectorJulia Pearson will answer some of the tough questions when she testifies before a Congressional Committee on capitol hill tomorrow. The secret service says it has enhanced security and surveillance after both the 2011 shooting and again after the recent security breach. One more point that shooter hernandez is serving 25 years on terrorism and weaponsrelated offenses. Matt. All right. Thank you very much. A former secret Service Agent who served on president obamas personal detail, she was assigned to the white house residence on the day of the shooting. Evi, nice to see you. Good morning. You did not personally hear the shots. Were you aware a Major Incident occurred . No. I didnt have any personal experience on that day with the incident as we rotate shifts and whatnot. There was that delay in which the shots were found and i think thats really what the consensus here is that this concern is like why does it take a significant amount of time to find this out. When you think about what went on, five secret Service Officers on the white house grounds thought they heard gun shots. People actually witnessed the gunman shooting in the direction of the white house. A woman in a taxi tweeted about it. A firearm and nine shell casings found that same night in a crashed car and two secret Service Agents were on the scene of that crash. Yet it was a house keeper, four days later, who sounds the alarm. How does that happen . Complacency. You think about it day after day youre there, nothing ever happens. And then also the idea of the shooting that took place almost to the complete opposite side, its on constitution avenue. And its the inability to connect those dots. In addition to that its also failure in the chain of command. When you have supervisors not really listening to the people underneath saying this is what i saw. Complacency . Im surprised to hear you say this. These people are protecting the white house and the first family. It means when you get used to nothing ever happening typically, when something does happen sometimes you fail to connect those dots. When you are being there and theres not an instance thats happening. A lot of that job is waiting for the threat to come. And so you have that combined with the fact that these shots were taken at a significant distance as well. When you add this to the situation with the prostitutes in colombia and the guy last week or earlier who gets to the front door with a knife, what needs to change . How do you accommodate for that complacency . Its a lot more than just that. I think at the end of the day its the management style. You see event after event after event, this is where you have to stop investigating you have to investigate the incident but look inward and say what are we doing as a whole. That starts where, with leadership, management. You have to see where are we failing, why are people failing. Need to change . The leadership needs i think to broaden its mind, bring in new perspectives, its an agency thats quite old and kind of done its thing for a significant amount of time and its worked up until now. This is when you have to change with the times to be progressive, to prevent stuff like this from happening. Thanks for your perspective. Appreciate it. Lets go over to tamron. Thank you very much.
