lost and friend, the bridal party, family members getting the call they awaited for. >> there she is. >> baby! where are you? >> the happy homecoming today, thursday, september 18, 2014. ♪ from nbc news, this is "today." with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from rockefeller plaza. >> i'm matt lauer, and savannah continues on maternity leave. nice moment for the bridal party. >> captured that live, can't believe we had that moment, amazing. >> fell out of communication after the her cane in mexico, and, by the way, the remnants of that storm is causing problems in the southwest. >> it really is. this is a long lasting system. in fact, take a look at the flooding falling in the southwest. this was el paso, etexas, heavy downpours, flash flood warnings overnight, high water rescues, parts of i-10 shut down, and it continues today as we show you the latest, the rem napts of odile stretching from dallas to south of austin caught up in the stationary front. we are watching the activity, and it's going to keep falling, the rain will continue and continue. we're looking at during the day today that remnant low, what's left of odile, moves slowly east. as it does, heavy thunderstorms train over the area. we have flood watches and warnings on into west texas far east as austin. flood watches as far east as houston as well. rainfall amounts, though they don't look heavy, but an inch and a half to two and a half inches per hour in the southwest and up to 3 to 5 inches per hour in southeastern texas. that's where we look at the big flood threat. there's a lot of rain that fell overnight in arizona, and that's where we find dylan dreier by one of the washes, and that looks fierce behind you. >> reporter: good morning, al, these washes are designed to take water that rushes down the mountains and steer them in the right direction. opposed to this traveling along the roadways and in areas where we could see more flash flooding. a lot of the water is actually originating from mexico, the higher elevations out there that, which, as you know, was hit hard by the hurricane. combine that with two and a half inches of rain the area picked up yesterday yesterday alone, the fact that it's seen five inches of rain in the last 48 hours. that raises the flooding issue in the entire area. however, residents were on top of things sandbagging early and well prepared this time around because it was just ten days ago that the remnants of hurricane norberg caused so many issues in the same area. now the threat is pushing into new mexico and panhandle of texas so that's the next area we'll watch. al? all right, thank you so much. again, this will continue right on into the weekend as that system gets caught up along the front and mean more rain and more flooding for the midsection of the country into the southwest, guys. we're going to see the effects of odile into the weekend. >> amazing how long it lasted. al, thank you so much. a chilling terror plot foiled in australia overnight. supporter of isis were going to randomly grab people in sidney and publicly execute them. we have more on the story. jim, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. australian officials say counterterrorism police intercepted a phone call two days ago in sydney between amar, 22, and another, 33, believed to be a high ranking isis operative in the middle east running a unit in australia. according to the police, the ore was to show isis's reach by carrying out and videotaping a public beheading of someone, as you say, picked randomly in the streets of sidney. one still at large with an arrest warrant out for him. police say the plot had been in the works since may, and it was just last week that the prime minister raised the terrorist alert in australia from medium to high. this is just the kind of nightmare scenario, hoda, the u.s. and allies fear. in this case, dozens of isis veterans return from the fight to commit terrorism at home. this one, it appears, was caught in time. >> thank you so much for that report. in the meantime, the nfl deals with another domestic abuse case this morning. a member of the arizona cardi l cardinals now deactivated after being arrested. this as corporate pressure is on the league and its commissioner, roger goodell, mounts. peter alexander has the latest. good morning. >> good morning to you. as nfl kicks off another game tonight trying to put the crisis behind them, one more arrest offering a new face of the league's domestic violence scand scandal. the arizona cardinals' dwyer charged with aggravated assault after two fights in july. the alleged victims? if those religious sites are in danger, iran is prepared to defend them? >> translator: we use our capability. >> reporter: what else could be necessary? >> translator: what is necessary is very clear, but we say the red line remains a red line. >> translator: washington had faint hopes they could harnness the cloud in the region for some degree of collaboration in fight against isis, but the president has dashed the hopes soundly. natalie, now back to you. >> thank you. two suspects wake up in jail this morning after a wild police chase through the streets of los angeles. police tried to pull over a white van after someone reported it stolen, but the driver would not stop. police performed a pit maneuver, but the suspect kept driving, at one point, even on the sidewalk. the suspect allegedly hit a dog that's recovering this morning in an animal hospital. eventually, police surrounded the suspect and took them into custody. fortune smiles on a maryland math teacher, third person ever to win the $1 million grand prize on the "wheel of fortune" wednesday. the puzzle was a two word thing which se solved. after calculating the odds, she assessed the probability was low. i'd think so. a huge celebration there. >> that's the mom laughing there. >> that's a loud noise. >> don't you love when a teacher wins? aniston. she will reveal how she spend her time when she is not making movies. >> what could be a big break in the desperate search for a missing university of virginia student. new under surveillance video released tied to that case. >> reporter: good morning, this is the area where police now believe hannah graham was last seen late last night. they started looking for the man that they believe was likely seen talking to her just moments before she texted her friend she was lost and the second the cell phone went silent. overnight they released under surveillance showing this man following hannah graham in a downtown pedestrian mall. two minutes later graham is seen walking with the same man following her. shortly after it was released, police say the man in the video showed up at the police department and admitted following hannah because she appeared distressed, physically intoxicated adding he wanted to make sure he was okay. the man said he never talked about her and stopped fol her after he saw another man approach and put his arm around her. he told police it seems the other man either knew hannah or were trying to help. they are now looking for that man. meanwhile, other under surveillance images show her from earlier that evening outside a monita irish pub where she is seen walking by herself but never goes pence the bar. ten minutes later the second year uva student can be seen running then walking in front of this charlottes villegas station. police say no one seems to be chasing her. a frustrating police chief wednesday begged for answers. >> i'd be very disturbed that someone in this downtown mall did not see that young lead. pick up the phone and tell us something. >> students painted this plea for their classmate's safe return. meanwhile, graham's parents issued another statement wednesday saying it is totally out of character for us not to have heard from her, and we fare foul play. i had a chance yesterday to speak with the parents of a 20-year-old woman abducted and killed in this same area in 2009. they told me they feel a special kinship to heather graham's parents. at this time the police insist the cases themselves are not connected. nonetheless they have looked at the area, that rural area where the first woman's remains were found. they are also asking people who live in this area, especially if they own large tracts stranded by hurricane odile. they had no way of reaching out to their families until last night. here comes the bride, finally. the families of a california bridal party are breathing a sigh of relief there morning after hurricane odile slammed into cabo san lucas, mexico sunday stranding them without cell service. the bride and her seven bride made arrived after odile clobbered the popular resort dad? >> e he looked like my older son's age and he walks home or can walk home all the time. >> if he looked more distressed like scared or lost. >> experts say at that age, kids won't always do that. kids would be screaming. they want to seem like they are in control and figure it out for themselves. >> you have kids like that age going to school themselves on their own. >> my niece did about that here's special anchor maria schriver. >> it's kind of like a full body buzz. i kept pushing out everything else in my life. >> reporter: in high school, andrew fulton was your typical good kid. a shy honor student and talented musician. but behind his family facts, andrew says he was an addict. not of alcohol or drugs but to the internet, surfing the web and playing video games up to six hours a day. what was it about the computer that hooked you? >> really like a therapeutic release. because you don't have to think about anything. all that social anxiety i felt in school just went away because i can be whoever i wanted to be. you kind of stay in that little high. >> reporter: his parents says typical teen behavior. >> it didn't raise alarm bells for us because he was still very successful kid. >> that's what teen boys do. they play games and it didn't jump right out and say, this could be aticketive. >> reporter: but in his first month at college andrew's habits spiraled out of control. >> i stopped going to classes and gained like sometimes 16 hours a day all through the night. sometimes i had like a piece of bread and cheese, that was my meal the whole day. >> it had such a hold on you? >> yeah. i kept doing it as long as i could. >> reporter: by the time his parents caught on. he flunked out and lost over 30 pound. >> i opened the door to a shell of a son, someone i didn't recognize. >> reporter: experts say getting hooked on the internet can be as debilitating as drug use. according to a survey, one out of ten people may show signs of internet addiction. well, to recognize this disorder in china. not so here in the u.s. the american psychiatric association saying further study is needed. >> i find it's a great puzzle because this is such a huge problem. >> reporter: hillary cash runs restart t. fishs international program for internet addicts him cloelt e loelted outside seattle, it's treated dozens of pen like andrew with same to hims. >> academic failure, poor few tristian. all these are the negative consequences of the videogame plays. >> reporter: is it like coming offer off a drug? how is the parkinson's? >> i'm feeling better than when i had to get up at 4:30 in the morning and do the 12-hour days because -- >> you had to get up early just -- >> so the medicine would kick in so i could drive, a 45-minute drive and my kids were waiting outside the door to get in to have breakfast before class at 6:45. but i have a wonderful neurologist at the cleveland clinic. i just -- oh, my. just amazing. and i think they worked on what they call the parkinson cocktail of the right medicine blend through the years. and i'm telling you, as long as i get some -- get enough rest, i'm ready to party. >> it is fun with her. >> i bet it is. >> sometimes it is harder to be the one next to the person, the one who loves the person who is going through something than it is to actually go through it. you want to take it on yourself. i know she keeps you positive. we can tell just now. >> yeah, yeah. that's how she's been her -- as long as i've known her. always had this positive attitude and she doesn't let anything get her down. she's just a go getter and if something will start to get her down, she fights that much harder. >> and did you know she had written the letter to us?
