One big critic, the republican governor rick perry has turned down an invitation to meet with the president at the airport, saying it wouldnt give them enough time to discuss the growing crisis. As for right now, the heaviest of rain is southeastern missouri, southern illinois. We have stronger storms through indiana right now. Thats going to be the area. A little further east we will see their strongest storms. We have 278 reports of wind gusts over 58 Miles Per Hour yesterday and 91 reports of greater than a quarter in am r diameter. We did have most of our flooding the last couple of days. In red, little rock, state new york is where we will see some of your strongest storms today. I want to point out where we have the flooding up and down the mississippi and to put it in perspective for you, 18 feet is where we have major flooding in the Mississippi River in burlington, iowa. The river levels are up closer to 24 feet. And it is going to take all week long before we even get closer to the major flood stage. The center of the storm off the coast of okinawa. The japanese government issued its highest level of alert, urging 600,000 people to evacuate their homes and take shelter because of this intense weather, because of the danger of storm surges. It is heading north, towards the main islands of japan where it is expected to reach a little bit later this week. Dont forget also that okinawa is home to 30,000 u. S. Service personnel. The breathless thrill of the six flags ninja roller coaster came to a screeching halt monday after a tree fell onto the rides tracks, slamming into the coasters first car. Lets begin this half hour with the defense resting at the Oscar Pistorius murder case. The latest phase of the end of the story of the trial being all over the world. Jeff, good morning to you. Reporter hey, savannah. Good morning to you. What a take. Only four months or so to get here. Whats important is were here. The prosecution has rested. Today, moments ago, the defense rested too. All the evidence in. All the witnesses heard. So the big question now, did Oscar Pistorius and his defense team do enough to keep him out of jail for life . Feeling the enormity of the moment Oscar Pistorius clenched his jaw in court, as his defense lawyer made the big announcement. We close the case for the defense. Reporter testimony is now officially over. And believe it or not, Team Pistorius is already laying the groundwork for a possible appeal, saying the tv cameras affected their defense. We were unable to call a number of witnesses who simply refused to testify because they say they dont want they are protected against television but they dont want their voices all over the world. Reporter so many witnesses over so many months trying to piece together what happened inside pistoriuss bathroom, when he shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius said it was an accident. Thought she was an intruder. And it is his own testimony that could decide his case. My lady, i didnt have time to think. I did not fire at reva. Reporter so testimony is over. Who do you think has the upper hand in the end . I still think the state. Their witnesses were more credible than the defense witnesses. As you said before, it is always going to come down to oscars testimony. He changed his version. He got agitated with the prosecutor. He broke down numerous times. So, no, not a good witness at all. Reporter heres whats next, his defense lawyer and the prosecutor will prepare closing arguments. Then its verdict watch. The judge and two assessors will deliberate. Who decides . It needs to be a 2 3 vote so the assessors can overrule the judge. Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder. Possible sentence, life in prison. But the judge can also find him guilty of two lesser charges. Murder, which means he didnt plan ahead of time. Possible sentence, 15 years in prison. Or culpable homicide. Pistorius was acting in selfdefense but was negligent. Possible sentence, also 15 years in prison. He is facing several firearms charges which could set him behind bars. We just learned Oscar Pistorius will have to wait even longer to hear his fate. Lawyers say they need more time to prepare their closing arguments. And the judge, shes giving it to them. How about it, do you think the defense raised enough doubt as to whether Oscar Pistorius intentionally killed Reeva Steenkamp . Reporter not so much, savannah. What they did is eat around the case. Trying to show he was anxious, fearful. But that was really undercut by the preparation getting that ph monthlong gap of getting the mental exam, which showed there was no incompetence. It showed his mobility even when he does not have his prosthetics on. Do you think it will have any affect on what happens here . It certainly could. The judge and the assessors are human beings. They saw it. It tends to undercut his defense that he is so vulnerable. He was so nearful. Here we see him being the olympic athlete that he is, very nimble, very much able to get around. Ale to walk back and hold a gun in his hand even without prosthetics. They had no choice. They had to put Oscar Pistorius on the stand. Did it help at all . Did that testimony help . No. I would give a d minus for that testimony. The worst thing, he went from changing his theory. From punitive selfdefense, i thought i was protecting against an intruder to a mental detect defense, i didnt know what i was doing. Quickly, where do you think the prosecutions case is weakest . The prosecution never had a smoking gun in this case. Their theory is there was a fight that night between Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp. They dont have strong evidence against that. The best evidence is what they started out with four months ago. Neighbors who said they heard a woman screaming before those gunshots went off. Also the fact that reeva was fully dressed in street clothes, the bathroom door was locked and a cell phone. Doesnt sound like someone just using the restroom in the middle of the night. Tim love is chef and owner of the Lonesome Dove bistro in texas. Also one of the stars of restaurant startup. Our Tasting Panel is in position, i believe, red did i to sample the finished product. Good to see you. First the show restaurant startups. Youre putting your own money into this . Thats right. Theres no judging to it. Its an investment show. Its about really letting people know what it takes to open a restaurant and hopefully making peoples dreams come true. We make an opportunity to invest in them. Any trepidation of putting up your own cash . Its a bit of a beating. But we did sign a lease here. Things are happening. Its a real show. Its really happening. Excellent. This is your Favorite Chicken recipe. This is the one you love the most. Where do we start . This is you call it chicken under a brick. This is actually called spatchcock chicken. I dont know if we can say that on tv. You just did. You take a whole chicken like this you buy at the store. Then we have the back of the chicken. What were going to do is take some scissors and we just cut like this and cut the backbone out of the chicken like this. Okay . And those are meat scissors that will get through the bone. Just a clean pair of scissors is good. Well take the other part of the spine out like this. While im doing that, mix up the seasoning. Whats in here . Chili powder, some chili flame, garlic powder, onion salt. Mix that up. And we take the chicken and fold it out. Now youre all butterflied. So we press it down like this. Now i need you to season the heck out of it. Dont be shy. Youre from texas. You know what . Let me tell you something, if you cant season something, you shouldnt be on the show. So we add a bit of peanut oil here. Were going to get it really hot. This pans nice and hot. Im going to throw it in the pan like this. Look at that. Wow. And thats what you want to hear. You hear that sizzle, right . Now, to make it cook evenly, thats where the brick comes in play. Ill let you wrap one. Foil has seasons to it. Theres a shiny side and a dull side. The shiny side should be facing in, the dull side facing out. See how its kind of dull . Yeah. Foil will peel off if you dont do it right. Put one brick on this like and another. This is fun. Its fun. And everybody has a chance to be involved in this. So then were going to let this sear for about ten minutes. Then im going to put it into the oven like i do here. Then by the magic of tv here see. Let me get that for you. Open that up. Right. Were going to pull one out. It takes about 45 minutes in the oven. Ten on the searing and 45 in you can do this on the grill. Bricks on the whole time then. Lets look at our panel there. How ro r you doing . I have a question for tim. Does it have to be a brick . Could you use a boulder or an anvil or Something Like that . Heres the deal, savannah. I knew that question would come from you. I think whats special and works about this movie in particular is matt is so good at creating these emotional pieces and very kind of intimate portrayals. I think if i have a line about what matt does, hes constantly making stories about people trying to be brave. And so you have that what matt does so well partnered with this giant, beautiful, epic summer movie with amazing 3d stuff. And he succeeded in creating a big summer movie with those specific little stories and emotional connections. Its true. Its a gorgeous movie. Theres plenty of fights if thats your thing. But plenty of story here too. The apes are realistic. They are not real apes. I understand you were acting across guys in unitards. There were a lot of grown man in unitards in the forest. Id never done anything like this before. But those who created gollum, our main character. Its incredible what they do. But luckily andy is such an incredible actor that youre really just doing is scene with this incredible actor talking about missing not knowing where their family is or so it wasnt as hard as it seemed. After the first five minutes of going yes, youre in a unitard. Were not at the gym. Im in normal clothes. You get past it. And its really remarkable what the guys who do all those movies are doing in this. You shot on location. Beautiful scenery. But you were kind of in the middle of the nowhere. I heard you were roughing it. No cell phone service. No. And people dont like that these days. No. Would have been, like, freaking out. Thats always a good idea for a half a minute to not have a phone. And we were in these beautiful forests. You know, i was around all boys. I was the only girl. So they were talking about, i dont know, race cars and whatever they were talking about and i would have my little books and find some mossy little perch and read my nerdy books for awhile. But it was gorgeous to be there. You know, it was a really great thing. And especially to work with my friend matt again. I love seeing you in the americans. You get all these great costumes. I loved hearing what you said about the first time you saw yourself on set at dawn of the planet of the apes. The americans is all about cat eyes and way too tight jeans and high heels. And then in the woods no makeup, frizzy hair, about 18 sweatshirts on. Old, dirty. I was like this is not what i look like. Wait, someone i cant do a movie like this. Thats where we could see stronger storms especially in through western pennsylvania and western new york. Wouldnt be surprised if an isolated tornado pops out. I love the speed photographer where you have a seed and it starts sprouting and by the end its decaying. I wanted to see that. I knew me and ethan would be getting old in front of everybody. And i think we get disconnected from that were human beings and were organic material and we do age. So it was exciting, but also kind of shocking to see yourself so rapidly get older. So in the course of the movie, i had my daughter and i sent my son to college and i got married and divorced along the way. Ethan had kids, got married and divorced. I love it when people are going through whether a down sizing or by choice to make a career transition to get into nonprofits because it is rewarding and they think they cant afford good corporate talent. You go in there and take a step back financially and it is very rewarding. Once you get in the swing of it you become more marketable within the arena and you can get a job for more money.
