Reporter a slow procession of dignitaries escorted mr. Obama while the iconic swiss guard stood at attention. The president and the pontiff exchanged warm greetings. They sat down in the popes study as photographers snapped away, then were joined by translators for their private meeting. In an interview out this morning with an italian newspaper, the president said he wanted the main topic of his conversation to be about income inequality across the globe, saying its not just an economic issue, its a moral issue. After the meeting the two exchanged gifts. The president presenting the pope with a custommade seed chest, featuring vegetables and seen grown in the white house garden. Its not the first time president obama has met with the head of the Roman Catholic church. He sat down with Pope Benedict in 2009. At least when it comes to economic philosophy and social justice. Its worth noting that yesterday the vatican put out an official press release, not highlighting the way president obama and the pope agree but the disagreements, calling this a complex time, noting that the fact that the pope disagrees with the president s contraception on health care and not happy about the growing movement of gay marriage being legalized in the United States. Lets follow up that. Do we know anything about the tone of discussion when those subjects, the ones you just mentioned, and some others where they disagree with brought up . We know that the president really wanted to talk about income inequality and he keeps bringing that up, had that interview with the italian newspaper. Its our understanding the pope himself was not going to be digging into the details and getting into the pointed ways, somebody who is a very close watcher of the Catholic Church said he would be acting more like a pastor, that the more pointed disagreements were going to come up in a meeting afterwards that takes place between the vatican secretary of state, the president , even john kerry would be in that one and thats where these political disagreements, the issue of religious freedom, which, of course, we have that Big Supreme Court case tackling on that issue of contraceptive coverage, thats where these topics, uncomfortable tomeks, frankly, for the president politically were likely to come up. Stand by. Anne thompson who has covered the pope joins us as well. Timothy dolan cardinal said he thinks the president can benefit greatly by listening to the pope because he says the holy see is one of the best listening pul t pulpits. Do you agree with that . Absolutely. You look at the impact the pope has had over his first year, the issue of poverty and also the issue of immigration. His first trip outside of rome was this little italian island where immigrants from north africa come over. The big issue with him, i can bet it was a big issue in their discussion. Chuck, just to finish it up, the pope enormously popular, some 80 of catholics say they favor theyre in favor of him. 60 say that he has renewed their faith and support for the church. Is there something just rubbing elbows with the pope for president obama . Reporter lets remember one in four americans are catholics. And so yes, i think that the president , particularly right now, where his own Approval Ratings are not so hot, just being seen with the pope, particularly in some places where there are a lot of catholic voters in the United States, its not going to hurt. There are new developments this morning in the search for malaysia air flight 370. For a second time this week the operation had to be suspended due to bad weather. But a thai satellite has detected 300 objects floating in the indian ocean near that search area. Lets get to nbcs keir simmons following all of this from kuala lumpur this morning. Good morning. Reporter savannah, good morning. It is so frustrating. Nine aircraft, six ships set off to try to get eyes on those 120 objects seen in the ocean by that french satellite, but the weather had cancelled the operation just as you say, a thai satellite reportedly spotted 300 objects that need to be checked out in that same area of ocean. Cancelled, the search for debris grounded again due to more bad weather, even as thai satellite images were said to show hundreds of objects in the crucial search air off australia. And while Malaysia Airlines met with families today in china, two news conferences in kuala lumpur were called off without any explanation. While a u. S. Lawyer representing many families arrived in beijing and claimed they have key questions they want answered. We believe that were going to be able to prove that the fleet of the boeing 777 has a design defect with the fuselage, with cracks in the fuselage. So we dont really need to wait for the official investigators or for the wreckage of the plane. Nbc news reached out to boeing. It had no comment. The 777 does have a strong Safety Record and authorities said the plane was fully serviced and maintained. Malaysia airlines said it was aware of the lawsuit but the families remained its top priority. Meanwhile, the son of captain zahari, pilot of flight 370, defended his dad in a newspaper interview. Ive ignored all of the allegations, he says. I know my father better. His daughter was on flight 370 for her honeymoon. This is her . Yes. For him, another day without a search is heartbreaking. You cant hold a service or a funeral or anything like that. No. Give us something. Show us something. To make us believe. Then we can proceed with our lives. Reporter and that father says he, too, has been approached by lawyers. He says he cant think about that right now, guys. But that he may well sign up and himself be involved in some kind of lawsuit. Thats thats right heartbreaking. Thank you very much. Authorities in Washington State say 90 people remain missing or unaccounted for following that devastating mudslide over the weekend. And while authorities do fear they have discovered eight more bodies, the number of missing is going down. With no sign of life in what is left of oso, stories of survival here seem even more incredible. Were under the mud and water and im sliding and im tumbling and it stopped. Reporter Robin Youngblood rode a wave of mud a quarter mile. The 64yearold cant believe this is what she survived. It must have been going 150 miles an hour. I mean, i just had time enough to say oh, my god, and then we were hit. Loanna says shes lucky, too. It looks like a bulldozer that was dozing down 100 trees at a time. Reporter she was home with seven children, a Slumber Party coming to an end when she called 911. Houses are gone reporter everyone made it out safely, but what happened here is still fresh. I was thinking, well, this is the end, im going to die. Reporter there hasnt been a rescue in o since saturday was hoisted to safety by randy fay, but fay couldnt find jacobs father and three brothers and sisters. And you hurt for that kid and the mom. But the Silver Lining is mom and kid are back together. So thats what you hang on to. Reporter this morning 90 are missing, down from 176. Natasha lost her mother saturday but is still waiting for word on her 4monthold baby. All she has left is pictures and memories. I have lost my baby and my mom. She was the most beautiful woman. Reporter the debris field that took so many lives is 30 to 40 feet deep in spots, as tall as a fourstory building. There were two reports, one in 1999, another in 2010, that warned the county the mountain was dangerous in the exact area where the earth gave way. The community did feel safe. They understood that risk. I think we did what we could do. Sometimes large slides happen. Reporter what happened here was unthinkable to most and now so is the grief. For now rescue teams call this mission a search mission, not a recovery. But they do admit if anyone is alive on that mountainside, it would be a miracle. Matt . Savannah . Miguel almaguer, thanks. A lot of heavy hearts for the two men who were lost, being remembered as heroes who raced into a massive inferno trying to save lives. 2 43 p. M. , the heart of bostons fashionable back bay erupts in fire, eventually growing to a ninealarm blaze. Strong, gusting winds ripped the flames throughout the residential building. We just saw smoke coming out and some people jumping from the windows above. And then all of the firefighters coming. Reporter lieutenant eddie walsh, 43, a dad with three kids under 10, and michael kennedy, 33, a marine combat vet, were among the first to respond. They rushed into the basement. Within minutes, a mayday call. Numerous firefighters trapped. Mayday, engine 33 engine 33 is a mayday. Engine 33 has a mayday. Engine 33 is a mayday in the basement. Ive never seen a fire move that fast and create such havoc in such a short period of time. Kennedy was raced to the hospital. He did not survive. It took some five hours for his brothers to recover walshs body. We moved lieutenant walsh, he was taken out the back through a line of firefighters with their helmets on along with the state police, shut down stowe drive. Everyone saluted them, and eddie was taken for his last ride. Reporter investigators say the inferno seemed to have started in a basement apartment as they try to figure out what caused such devastation. The scene of this blaze is just a short distance, a couple of blocks from the finish line of the Boston Marathon where those bombs exploded last year. Many of these firefighters were among the First Responders on that tragic day, a tragic, very emotional anniversary is just coming up a few weeks away from now. Tamron . Ron, thank you very much. Curtis became trapped on tuesday as a raging fivealarm fire spread through an apartment complex with nowhere to go. He was forced to make a daring drop from a fifth floor ledge to a balcony below. Moments later, he made a daring leap to a waiting fire truck ladder and seconds later the building begins to collapse. Hes here this morning with firefighters Brad Hawthorne and dwayne wyble. How incredible is that to see how close you came . I saw the flames coming from the front side of the building but i didnt realize it had reached to that magnitude around the back side and the corner. Basically i was on the last corner of the building that didnt burn. Youre a supervisor. Little did you know how fast it was moving. At what point did you realize im trapped, theres no way out . Actually, i got up there with a fire extinguisher and tried to slow it down for them to get there and it was pretty well contained. It want spreading at that point and i went down actually below and looked and it want spreading and i my boss actually called me, David Harrison called me and said where are you at . I said im up here. He said you need to get down now. Thats when i saw the smoke that had it started to spread and from there i knew i was in trouble, want going to be easy to get out. You found the balcony and then theres that moment you swing to the fourth floor. Whats going through your mind or is it all instinct at that point . It was pretty much a survival instinct, yes. The heat was so intense. These guys can tell but the heat. That was the on option. Brad, let me bring you in here. Youre at the end of the ladder there, you bring it close thanks to dwaynes most excellent driving to get it in that spot. Did you tell curtis jump or did he just lean towards you in that moment . I told him to hold up for a second, get the ladder at the right angle and all. He held up. He was very calm, cool and i waved him on and he made a leap for it and i told him to hang on, it was going to be a little jerky on the way down. And we see just seconds later, the building starts to come down. Dwayne, youre the driver, you have this great reputation as a great driver in houston. Thank you. You swung that ladder just in time. Look curtis said, we had no idea there was that much fire and how fast it moved. But i new ones he was on the end of it, i knew captain hawthorne was in a position to protect both of them and i could move it away as quickly as possible. But it surprised every one of us how quickly it came down after they were on there. These firefighters say, curtis, you were very calm and collected. Did you feel that wayin si insi . I think i was super focused to make sure it turned out right. What would you want to say . I was running away from the inferno trying to save myself, these guys run to and into infernos trying to save other people. I shouldnt even be here. For years some have argued College Athletes have been paid. Football players at Northwestern University have been granted the right to unionize. A branch of the National Labor Relations Board has ruled that players are technically employees. Northwestern said theyre going to appeal this. Was the success of it what was tearing the relationships apart . In a lot of ways, yeah. People could buy into our stories, they could identify with us, care about us as people and it also fueled the music in a really subjective, powerful way. That second record rumors, turned out hit after hit and became one of the best selling albums of all time. You can go your own way, go your own way you can call it another lonely day nearly 40 years later the band is still performing their big hits like go your own way. Constant reminders of a time in their lives that was filled with both pleasure and pain. Took this love and i took it down every night when lindsey and i do landslide by ourselves, i believe we go back to the moment that landslide was written. While most stores manage to please most people, there was a tremendous difference between best and worst. Heres an abbreviated ratings list. Tell us about the stores at the top of the list. In the past decade theres been a tremendous steadiness to the ratings. The good guys are the good guys over and over again. Wegmans, trader joes is great because its a National Grocer and costco falls short on service but they do well on price. The lowest on the list, the Walmart Super center. What were people saying was wrong here . 28 of the people on our survey went to walmart br where it fell short was its service, it was subpar and perishables were not too good. We reached out to walmart. They said over the last several years weve taken significant efforts to help improve the quality of our meat and produce and weve seen our customer respond positively to these changes. We offer customers 100 guarantee on meat and produce. If theyre not satisfied, they have to just bring back their receipts. Lets go to the irritants. Number one, too few open checkouts. 19 was the average. Walmart, 50 of the customers said that. Congested aisles, out of stock advertised specials. This gets under peoples skin. Its the lost leaders that come out in the flyers. And scanner overcharges. People should be outraged over that. And they say consider where you want to shop. Some of the kids, particularly boys, think their role is to take care of mom. Right. Right. My kids do think that. My son asks me every day, mom, who are you dating . You need to have two happy parents and i love dating and im having a blast doing it, but it is really none of my kids business. I know what you mean by that. In the early stages, did you say to your kids, look, here is whats going to be happening, did you explain it or do you just kind of wait to see when it presents itself . Good question. No. I think sometimes it is very helpful to explain it, just to let them know, mommy and daddy are not going to be together now and thats hard, and each of us is going to try to meet new people. I dont think you go into the romance immediately. You just say, you know, there are people out there for friends and we are going to do things. I think one of the other issues is, it is different if the person is divorced or widowed. Because there are issues having to do with going back into the grief and sometimes children have a very different arc of grieving than their parents do and not all kids do it the same way. It is a lesson for kids, its a lesson for parents. I think it is interesting that your boys are seeing you happy as youre engaging. And thats very important, so that they dont worry more.
