We do begin, though, with a developing story overnight, and that is the situation in ukraine, where protesters have now taken control of the capital city of kiev. This comes one day after a Peace Agreement was signed aimed at ending the nations threemonth political crisis and this week of bloodshed. President barack obama and russian president Vladimir Putin spoke for more than an hour following that deal. Richard engel is in kiev this morning with the very latest for us. Richard, youve been there this whole time following this situation. Whats the latest at this hour . Reporter something profound is under way. This morning, Government Forces are no longer in evidence here in central kiev, and the protesters are consolidating their control of the ukrainian capital. Government forces have abandoned the president s offices. The entrances to that compound now controlled by the demonstrators. Demonstrators are gathering in front of parliament. More crowds are walking through the streets as they are realizing that the government simply seems to have melted away. The president , viktor yanukovych, no longer in kiev. His whereabouts are not exactly known. Some Officials Say he is in the second city of this country, karkiv. Thats not been completely confirmed. Other reports are that he has fled the country. The protesters weve been speaking to are calling this their victory day. They say that their revolution for more democracy has now succeeded. Where this is going, however, remains unclear. Could the forces come back . We dont know, and there is a strange feeling of uneasiness as protesters are wandering through the mostly abandoned streets by the security forces, looking around and trying to see if this is really happening, have they really managed to isolate the president and take control of this city, and after that, potentially, the rest of this country. And after weve seen this morning, there would that be uneasiness. A quick question. As we know, president obama and president putin speaking. Does president putin have anything to do with this deal finally being reached . Was russia weighing in . Reporter u. S. Officials say that russia did cooperate in the negotiating process and russian negotiators were involved in the deal that was signed yesterday. And what happened was there was three days of horrible bloodshed, much of this in the square where i am behind me. Then yesterday there was this deal. President yanukovych signing it under pressure with mediators involved from russia, european countries, the u. S. Also involved by telephone. And then after he signed this agreement, giving away some of his president ial authority, things started to unravel. And then people woke up this morning, walked out into the streets and realized that the Government Forces seemed to be gone. Even the president s own residence, the president ial palace, which is just outside of kiev, has also been abandoned with protesters wandering through the president s private apartment. Like you said, what a situation this morning. Richard, thank you. Want to get you caught up now on some of the mornings other top stories. Jenna is here with those. Good morning. Hey, good morning. Hi, everyone. An unprecedented scene at the vatican today. Former Pope Benedict joined pope francis at a ceremony to appoint 19 new cardinals. As we reported friday morning on today, garrick was a highly respected foreign correspondent, but he holds a special place for us as the original news anchor and later cohost of weekend today. Garrick utley was 74 and is remembered by his friends and colleagues for his kindness and for being a true gentleman. That is the news. Erica . Lovely notes about that as well yesterday. Jenna, thanks. Dylan is here with a check of the forecast. Dylan, good morning. Good morning. A lot of cleanup after the severe storms we saw, thanks to this cold front that is now well out over the atlantic. And back behind it, the good news is its not going to cool down all that quickly. Were looking at temperatures today actually about 10 to 15 degrees above average. Washington, d. C. , about 63 degrees today, 52 degrees in boston. But on the flip side of that, look at the cold air that is surging into the upper midwest, where temperatures will be about 15 degrees below average, highs only topping out in the teens. Thats a look at the weather across the country. Clear skies this morning. A little bit chilly at least by our standards. 42 right now, 38, some other temperatures around the south bay. Looking up to clear skies and mostly in the 40s right now. High clouds will be coming in from the west for the afternoon but otherwise a fairly warm day. Highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. San francisco, upper skills. Low 70s in the north bay and the clouds begin to fill in for tonight with some patchy fog heading into tomorrow morning. And that is your latest forecast. Lester . All right, dylan. Thanks very much. The olympic winter games are rapidly coming to a close, but the action is not done yet, and there have been some pretty dramatic moments for the americans. A big win in the ski slopes, a crushing loss at the hockey rink. Keir simmons has been following it all for us. Hi, keir. Hey, lester, good morning. What a two weeks its been. The excitement, the glory, the despair and the drama continues right up until these final days. 18yearold Mikaela Shiffrin, the last to compete in the slalom finals. That event has been a disappointment so far for team u. S. A. One lone silver medal in the 5000meter short track relay. While the long track team goes home without reaching the podium for the first time in 30 years. In the last few days of the games, a reminder of past sporting scandals. Two athletes, german and italian, the first in sochi to test positive for drugs, both sent home. And controversy over the figure skating final rumbles on with news one of the judges is married to a former Russian Figure Skating Federation president , ensuring russias adelina sotnikovas gold despite a stumble, will be talked about for years to come. And just in case you werent feeling bad enough about the hockey, lester, for some of us, i think there may be some more bad news. You remember that company in illinois that put up that poster that said, loser keeps bieber . Yeah. For canada versus the United States. Well, we know what happened, so this is their response to that. Worst bet ever. I mean, theres going to be some people who think keeping Justin Biebers a good thing, right . Im not going to weigh in on that. I just want to say to you, happy birthday, my friend. Thank you very much. I know youd rather be home spending it with your family, but its wonderful having you here. 21, its great. Thanks, keir. Here is the latest medal count. Russia and the United States are tied for the lead with 27 medals. Russia has 10 golds and the u. S. Has 9. Norway and canada are next in line. Now, one of the american gold Medal Winners is right beside me. Mikaela shiffrin, who, as we mentioned, won the womans slalom, the youngest ever to win it at the olympics. Good morning and congratulations. Youngest ever, does that matter to you or just that you won gold . That matters. I always wanted to be the youngest to win gold. That was my biggest goal growing up, so im very happy. Im wondering if at some point you thought you lost it, though . We saw that point where you kind of lose control, the recovery. I dont even know how to describe it. Some people say it was bode millerlike. Did you think at that point you had lost it . Yes, i did, actually. What happened . I thought i missed that gate, really. I just it was a really quick section of the course and i got ahead of my skis a bit and just i mean youre looking at it now. Seeing it now and i know that if i got another chance you dont know how you did it. I dont know how i did it. If i had another chance, i wouldnt make the same mistake. I would say make the same mistake because you got the gold. Whatever works for you. You also have a cold. I understand you had trouble breathing coming down the slopes. Yeah, im still a little stuffy. My voice is normally more pleasant than this. You were competing with people with ten people or more mileage. Some people called you poised, come called you mature, prepared. Where do you think all that comes from, your sense of poise out there on the slope . I think it just comes from my upbringing. My parents are both really passionate, and weve always placed a lot of emphasis on just having fun and loving what were doing. So, as long as im loving it, i dont see any reason to be out of control. Well, you have been out there. You started skiing, what, in your front driveway. Yeah. I mean, youve been skiing since a kid. And because you were so young, your mom travels with you on a lot of your trips abroad and out of the country. Whats that like, having that kind of support . Its so incredible to have her right next to me. Shes one of my best friends and she has an amazing eye for skiing and she cooks amazing meals and she just helps me keep everything in perspective and stay on the course. She is right beside you literally as well. Im expecting some food. She just plugged your cooking. What was it like watching her come down yesterday . Oh, it was pretty magical. I mean, we just stood there and enjoyed the moment. I love watching mikaela ski. I just love it. I think shes a beautiful skier, not only fast, but beautiful. And it was incredible. I almost had a heart attack when she made the bobble, but then, of course, she recovered immediately and thank god. So, it was really exciting. That was, again, a demonstration of how poised mikaela is. Would you have expected anything less, that she was going to recover from that . Well, she had a race the last world cup race, she did make a similar bobble and she didnt recover as quickly. But shes a really quick learner and she learned from that. I think she probably learned from that race. And yesterday, she got right back on track. Instead of coming in eighth, she won. Well, it was something to watch. And i know youre both going to be celebrating. You get your medal tonight . Tonight. It doesnt feel real yet. Until you get the hardware, i know. To get that medal and bite a chunk off of it. Youve got a huge future ahead of you. Thank you. And thank you. First professional female player whos not a kicker took the field last night. First this is good morning nelly woah. So, we are also happy to report that its not just sochi enjoying some milder temperatures. This morning those folks on the plaza chose a great day to stop by because its a little more mild here in new york this weekend. The good news is, lester, by the time you get back, the cold weather should be back, too. No, no, no. I dont want to hear any more arctic vortex is here. This is my idea of what a Winter Olympics should be like. You put that weather in your carryon, then, and bring it back to us. Meantime, there is a lot to get to. We want to catch you up on the mornings top headlines this hour. Protesters fanning out across ukraines capital city and that countrys president leaves his official compound. It all happens a day after a peace deal is signed aimed at ending political unrest. Former Pope Benedict making history this morning, meeting with pope francis for a ceremony, greeting cardinals who will one day choose the next pope. And boats rushed to the rescue of residents in pennsylvania trying to flee floodwaters there, this as a stormsoaked northeast braces for a bitter finish to the month of february. And still to come in this half hour from sochi, it was a lastditch effort for a u. S. Speed skating medal in sochi, and this quartet of talented athletes brought it home. Ill talk with the fourman team that claimed silver in the mens short track relay. They also happen to make great hat models. I just want to point that out. And later, fourtime olympic ice hockey medalist julie chu will be here to talk about tomorrows closing ceremony. Great well look forward to that, lester. Were also looking forward to seeing you in some giant, fuzzy hats as well. You do the rapping so well, we figured maybe, yep, do a little shopping . Its an iconic symbol of russian fashion. Apparently, theyre as popular as ever on the streets of sochi. I understand we may have some as well here to try on and model. Its a good day when we can put a russian hat on. In fabulous colors. I used to do that look. In the 70s, we called it an afro, but except you didnt take it off. And as we kick off a special week here devoted to body image, this morning youll hear us talk about some of the struggles we faced as we were growing up. We know we are all in this together. But first, we do want to take a look at this dramatic photo, the photos that made headlines across the country this week. Its tough to forget the image. A desperate woman jumped out of her suv. It happened on the middle of a highway in miami. Starts giving cpr to her 5monthold nephew. A photographer who rushed to the scene to help, then when he was sure that help was there, started capturing the frantic scene with his camera. The baby survived. The incident on this miami highway was broadcast live on local radio. We have several reports of a woman exiting her vehicle, screaming for help. In photos released from the hospital, sebastian appears much better now, thanks to all the strangers who joined to help him. Doctors say they dont yet know why sebastian quit breathing, but they believe his condition will improve. Meantime, his aunt is thanking everyone who stopped in that traffic jam to help her, and she and the doctors are urging everyone to learn cpr to save a life this time. Such a great reminder. Mark, thank you. Want to head outside to dylan for a final check of the weather on this saturday morning. Not bad out there its not bad, already in the 40s. Enjoying pretty nice weather out here. Your birthday today. Yes. How old are you turning . Im 16. Sweet 16. Did you bring the nice weather here . I did. Thank you very much. It gets even better around here tomorrow, but we do have some snow, especially out towards the rockies. Thats where were looking at our next bigger snowstorm. Of course, they expect it this time of year. Winter storm warnings and watches in effect all through the northern rockies, even stretching into some of the valleys, down towards billings, where we could end up with about 6 to 9 inches of snow. But in the higher elevations, easily a foot to a foot and a half of snow through the day today and into sunday as well. Elsewhere across the country, that cold front finally exiting the east coast, but its not too cold. The midatlantic actually topping out in the 60s today. We should be 63 in washington, d. C. For the afternoon today, a few high clouds going by but a very nice forecast today with partly cloudy skies due to those high clouds heading into the afternoon and just some morning fog that will start to cloud things up around this time for tomorrow morning. We should see highs in the low 70s around san jose today. Upper 60s closer to San Francisco and 70s in the north bay. T is your latest forecast. Lester . All right, dylan. Thanks very much. U. S. Speed skaters are not heading home emptyhanded, thanks to the mens short track relay team. They battled hard against russia for the top spot on the podium, and while russia may have won the gold in the 5000meter relay, the u. S. Team walked away with the silver, the countrys only speed skating medal of these winter games. Im joined now by that fourman team, chris creveling, j. R. Celski, Eduardo Alvarez and jordan malone. Good morning, guys. Congratulations. Thank you. Thank you very much. Make you feel like, we got a medal out of this thing . Very relieved. Chris, tell me about this race now. First of all, two china and netherlands went down almost right out of the gate. Exactly, right off the start we had an opportunity and we seized it, and we finished the race in second and we seized that opportunity. So at one point, you were in the lead with about 15 laps to go. Yes. What did that feel like . That was our opportunity to take over the race, you know, and make our country proud. And all these boys out here with me, we made a great race and made our country proud with a second place. J. R. , everybodys been talking about the troubles the u. S. Has had, both on the short and the long track. Team usa won ten speed skating medals in 2010, six of them in short track. What has been the problem up until now . You know, its just different circumstances, man. Were in a different country, you know, halfway across the world, and i just think that, you know, we put a lot of hard work in and people dont really see that, but were dedicated to the sport, and its tough to come away with only one medal, but at least we got one. Its a nice, shiny one. Its a great won. Eddie, thank goodness for second chances. Not only did two competitors fall, but you guys almost didnt make this. You had fallen, were almost out of the semifinals, but they allowed you in. Explain what happened. I was going on the inside of korea. Just so happens that i clipped his left hand, which kind of sent me flying into the boards. Its definitely one of those calls that could have gone either way, but it went the way we wanted it to, so we advanced to the final. Were walking away with a silver medal. Very cool. And jordan, you showed that in the final race, you whipped out a texas flag for your celebration. Where did you have that hidden . I actually had it in the locker room. I didnt want to jinx myself and bring it out on to the ice. But you know, i flew the American Flag first and i flew it with these guys. It was an extreme honor. Then in texas, we get a little more specific, so i got to fly the texas flag four years ago, and i flew it now, and i really, i make a lot of people at home very proud by doing that and thats why i do it. I could almost hear the roar from texas when you whipped that flag out. Yeah, exactly. Look, you made everyone proud. Great race. Congratulations. By the way, j. R. , i ran into your folks shopping on the streets, and i said i hope to see the guys on the today show this weekend. We came through. Good luck on your medals tonight. I know its going to be an exciting night for you. Be sure to catch the olympic events on primetime tonight on nbc starting at 8 00 7 00 central. Were back right after this. This morning, the today show is kicking off an indepth look at body image in america. A Little Something we call love your selfie. A new today aol poll finds twothirds of us worry about our appearance more often than we worry about money, relationships or even health. And all week long on today, well be talking about how to embrace your body, flaws and all. And to kick things off, we are sharing a few of the things we love about ourselves and a few that we dont. My bodys constantly changing. Ive had two kids. Things just dont work in the same way that they used to. I would say my body is fairly petite. Not too skinny, not too heavy, but appropriately athletic. Lean but with problem spots. I was a very awkward child. My glasses actually took up the majority of my face, but my teeth were growing at the same time, so i had giant teeth and giant glasses. I used to hate the locker room in junior and Senior High School because i had this incredibly skinny, sunken chest. From the neck up, i was aesthetically challenged, and my peers did not stop reminding me of that fact all throughout high school. Like a lot of middleaged guys, you know, i have to worry about the belly, and thats what im obsessed with, trying to avoid the pot belly. Ive never been a big fan of my arms. My arms are never going to look like some other arms. You do your best to accept that and move on. I have really bad scoliosis. Im always trying to stand up straight, but then i look at pictures and im really not standing up straight, no matter how hard i try. Im very comfortable in my skin right now. I feel good about the fact that i am a constant work in progress. Ive always liked my eyes, so thats an easy one. I would definitely say smile is one of those things that i love about myself. Sometimes in the gym i get nice compliments about my calves. [ laughter ] when i think of beauty, i think of confidence. Heres what im going to be today because this is who i am, and take it or leave it. I love the moments, honestly, when my kids say things to me, like mommy, youre beautiful, and im in pj pants and my hairs in a ponytail and im not wearing any makeup. That f these sweet, little boys can think their mom is beautiful because they love me for who i am, then thats a great day. You have to figure out what your beauty is and appreciate that, and all the other stuff, those are just going to be Little Things that are going to add to it, little icings on the cake. We do all need to love ourselves a little bit more. Take that picture of yourself, love your selfie and love yourself. I dont know how you guys felt, but i found it very awkward to be asked those questions about, you know, your body. It was that in itself was very difficult. I think youre right, it was. One of the things, though, that i think was a positive that came out of it, because i think we all can probably make a list a mile long of things that we dont like about ourselves or things that we think are flawed that probably, you know, most of the world would disagree with. It was a great exercise to be forced to pick something about yourself that you like. You do like. And to make yourself talk about it. We all have so many positives, and if we could all focus a little bit more on that, i think we would feel better about so much. I think we do that as a society. Its so easy to talk about what we dont like about ourselves. Its the first thing that comes to mind i want to fix this, this and this. To finally sit there and someone says what do you like about yourself . Youll see it really changes your attitude about Everything Else and how you approach everything. And watching it again and hearing yourself say it, its like, oh, yeah, i guess i do like my smile because i said it. You know those glasses . Killer glasses bring them back. Im going around here in sochi showing everybody my calves, so, anyway. Next week youll hear from the rest of our colleagues, matt on how he feels about losing his hair and savannah on her height. And everyone from cameron diaz to Michelle Obama will weigh in on this conversation. Thats coming up. And also on mondays show, our friends and colleagues will be saying hello without any makeup in the morning, and you can get in on that action, too. So, as youre sharing your selfies with us all week long, on monday were encouraging you to take a makeupfree photo, share it on twitter, share it on facebook, use loveyourselfie. And lester, dont worry about it, because you look great without makeup. Were off on monday, though. Isnt that our day off . We are off on monday. Thats just a coincidence. Still to come this morning on today, its been an exciting two weeks, but its going to be time soon for lester to say so long to sochi and come back here, but not before talking with one of our favorite athletes, fourtime olympian julie chu, who is playing a very big role in sundays closing ceremony. That lets say no to soso. Lets turn on a faucet of ideas. Lets go off the grid, but stay on track. Lets soak it up here. Save it there. Then, lets line it up and knock it out. Lets do this. More saving. More doing. Thats the power of the home depot. Select mosaic tile, your choice now just 6. 98 each. Its hard to believe the Olympic Games are coming to an end, but of course, not without a big show. Tomorrows closing ceremony is something you wont want to miss. And with me now is a fourtime olympic ice hockey medalist whos been selected to carry the American Flag tomorrow night, julie chu. Julie, good morning. Nice to have you here thanks, lester. Its great to be here. And i put on the outfit. This is the official closing outfit for team usa. It is, its awesome, and you look great in it. Ralph lauren has done an amazing job outfitting us, and this is absolutely awesome. Its a great look. I didnt put on the hat. I left it back there. Forgot my hat. Tell me how psyched you are to be chosen by your teammates to carry the flag. I think im so humbled. I dont even know how to express it. When i first found out, i kind of stuttered, and im not usually at a loss for words. So, what an honor. And tremendous team usa effort here in sochi, and a great honor to be able to represent usa, and hopefully, my teammates really well. Youve had you know, you and i chatted yesterday on the heels of the silver medal finish in hockey, the loss to canada. You guys really seemed to have gotten a great attitude about it. I mean, you came youve been here four times now. This is your fourth Winter Olympics. Yeah. Walked away with a medal in each one. How are you feeling right now . Completely blessed. And youre right, as we chatted yesterday, it was still pretty raw, the emotions of trying to be the best in the world, to want to win a gold medal. But as time ebbs a little bit, we get a chance to kind of talk about that moment, talk about our journey, spend time together with not only our teammates but our friends and family, with the great supporters. Its awesome. We had such an amazing time. And its going to be a pretty cool ending, all of you going through the stadium tomorrow with you holding the flag. It wont be on a hockey stick, will it . Im trying to finagle the hockey stick. I dont know if theyll let me. If there was an opportunity, would you like to play again . I dont know. My sole goal was to get through february. So, ive gone through this olympics. Ive been so blessed, as ive said before, and i loved every moment. So, after this, ill be able to wrap my mind around what the future holds, but until now, im going to enjoy the next day and a half. Its been great seeing you. I sat with your folks the other day during the game, such nice folks. Im so sorry they yelled a little bit. A lot, a lot. They are certainly your biggest fan and were fans of all youve done. I dont know if i want to take this off. This is a fun look. It looks good. Youre rockin it. Youre rockin it up next, i sipped the vodka, tasted the food, now its about the fashion, because whats a trip to russia without the fuzzy head gear . This is today on nbc.
