we were -- we didn't have as much and then i thought we'll be okay. and then you start adding people. the strays start coming who don't have a place -- before we knew it, you weren't -- 20 people were there. we're trying bustling around, trying to get everything ready and when all of a sudden, one thousand, about a thousand geese this tall landed on our back lawn. i don't know where the heck they heard about the storm, i guess. they were landing -- and our dog that's what lola does, she goes out and gets them off the lawn, well, i can't believe the flutter of wings. and the amount of turdlets that wept flying when the geese went flying in somebody else's yard. well, lola decided to -- the dogs wanted to roll around in it, half an hour before everybody is coming. you think you have trouble. >> i was early. >> hoda -- >> you knew i was in trouble too. >> you had a look. >> i was like -- >> you're not having it. >> we're not ready. >> regis was there. >> regis was give you quite the time. >> he was. but he -- there is regis and joy. he thought it was video. i was like stop talking. it is a picture. then he said, i've got to give you something and you must show it on the air. i go, what? >> regardless of what you heard, i got along fine with gelman, 15 years. come on. >> that was a fun day. >> and i have one of you. we showed them all. no, i showed you -- i have one with you and bambino. >> oh. >> it was a blowout. what a bad -- >> when the very, very first play of the game happens, and, you know, peyton was like, hike, he didn't say omaha, the ball went flying and it was a safety. and when you start off the game with an oh -- it was like, you sort of knew. it reminds me of what -- you know when you start off your day and it is crummy. i was walking my dog and fell down on the ice a couple of weeks ago. and you already know that that day is going to be crummy. >> you want to say, really? is that the way we start. >> you can't unring the bell. sometimes bad things keep happening. that's what happened. >> i know. there is always somebody that wins and somebody that loses, it is hard for people that are diehard fans to keep things in perspective. but our dave won the pool around here. >> i forgot to give my 100 bucks. and then they said, you left, you forgot -- they had to put somebody else in the pool. you know who they put in? dave. and dave won 400 bucks. davie, good for you. >> we're happy for all you winners out there. >> seattle did really, really well. >> i'm happy for them. first time they won the super bowl. just great. because you know what, spread the wealth a little bit. beautiful talent, beautiful people. okay, good for them. on a sad note -- >> what a shock. >> turned on the news, caught up on what's going on and to find out that philip seymour hoffman had been found on his bathroom floor in his apartment in the west village and gone. couldn't resuscitate him. they are alleging -- because there is no toxicology reports. >> the autopsy is coming and a lot of papers are reporting there were needles and drugs found. i was surprised he was 46. i didn't realize -- i feel like he's been around for a long time, so many different movies. >> such a character movie. he would never do anything to change his face to look younger. he was all about the roles he would play so he could disappear into them. i think he struggled with addiction since his early 20s. so that takes a huge toll on you. >> to find -- i sort of vaguely knew he had children. i wasn't sure. but to come to find out he had three kids, all young. >> very private guy. >> right. and he was -- he had a long time girlfriend, i guess. >> also alleging they had recently broken up and don't know if that what sent him into a tail spin. but, you know what, look at the -- how many oscars, won the oscar for "capote," nominated many times, revered. i think he won a tony maybe or was nominated for his work en broadway. he's -- he was a magnificent talent. but by all accounts loved his kids. >> pictures of him with his kids out and around. >> so many people think if they could just get fame, if they could just get money, just get that kind of respect, but it is not about that. >> he was battling demons through a lot of his life. >> we send our love to his family. >> definitely. for the game, you were watching the game, people watched for the commercials. one thing was interesting. joe namath came out. so wild. >> some things never change. >> they call him hollywood joe. broadway joe. >> broadway joe. >> broadway joe. he was wearing that big fur. and he wore that in the '70s. he wore it again. >> lock at him back then. >> that's a different -- that's a puffier one. >> but still, the same family. >> yeah. yeah. >> i'm surprised peta let him get away with that, you know? what if it was your child? she really wants to waken hollywood to the fact she feels, she believes this man molested her as she was a young child. her brother, he went on twitter and defended his sister. he's a biological child of woody allen and mia farrow and said they put the part where -- before or after annie hall, talking about the golden globes awards. >> when he was honored. >> first of all, you know, why would she say certain -- they're saying mia put her up to it. no child wants to talk about those kinds of things. >> 20 years later. >> it is the most painful thing in their lives. why do they want to expose it, talk about it. >> she changed her name. she tried to move on. she lives in connecticut under a different name, but for whatever reason, this -- this part of her life is still haunting her. >> we had a statement from woody allen's publicist. he said, mr. allen read the article and found it untrue and disgraceful and he will be responding very soon. and it goes on. >> there was an investigation the time, no charges were brought. they did find -- they did think something happened, they just couldn't prove something had happened. >> 7 years old, too fragile to testify at that time. >> and now the statute of limitations -- >> exactly. >> a little bit about philip seymour hoffman. we covered him, but what do we know? >> the autopsy is taking place today at his west village apartment. we don't know a whole lot. we know there were bags of what is suspected to be heroin found in his apartment, eight bags of this substance. we'll find out more after the toxicology reports come out. it is shocking. everyone in hollywood is mourning, grieving, from tom hanks to different co-stars he had in various films and he was a character actor. beloved by all of his followers. and it is still a shock to many. people in the west village were talking yesterday to nbc news and saying he was a family man, three kids in elementary school and he took the kids to school. he rode around on a bike with new york yankees hat on. he did not want the celebrity fans and the paparazzi following him around. it is shocking to know he was even battling these addictions still at this point of his career. >> wasn't in the tabloids, never saw him -- >> in rehab a year ago and battled early on in his career. but didn't see the stuff that would make you -- >> thank you. thanks for covering this. do you have -- what a segue. do you have extra toilet paper rolls hanging around? >> what if a stranger stopped breathing right in front of you? >> we kick off life saving lessons today and we're starting a critical lesson in cpr. connie harvey is a certified cpr instructor with the american red cross. how are you doing, connie? >> how are you? my kids learned how to do it in grade school, when they were young. cody got up about two months ago, man was choking to death, went right over and he saved him. >> heimlich. >> all those years before. >> it is empowering, that's for sure. >> it sounds weird, sometimes you're not sure if cpr is what the person needs. how do you know? >> you want to begin -- if you see somebody that falls and collapses you want to make certain they are unresponsive. make certain they're unresponsive. >> so what do you do? >> we train to use your personal protective equipment. if you don't have it, don't worry about it. but if you see someone down, tap them on the should and shout, are you okay? are you okay? >> okay. >> if there is no response, have someone call 911. you want emergency help as soon as you can. then you open the air way and check for breathing. you're looking toward the feet, looking for the rise and fall of the chest, listening for air to escape or feeling breath on your cheek. if you don't have any of those signs, do a quick look for severe bleeding and then start cpr. >> where do you put your -- the heel of your hand. >> the heel of the hand in the center of the chest on the breastbone. >> on the breastbone. >> push hard and push fast. full cpr includes 30 compressions and two breaths, cycles of that. >> 30 compressions? >> that's right. at a rate of about 100 beats a minute. and that actually -- there is music that a lot of people understand, stayin' alive. the beat of that is equal. one and two and three and four and five and six and seven and eight and nine and 10, and 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30. >> what are you doing? >> two breaths. >> what are you putting on his mouth? >> breathing barrier, personal protective equipment i talked to you about, that is just to help prevent disease transmission. >> what if you don't have that? you take a chance? >> absolutely. a lot of first aid kits have these. if they have them, we recommend you use them. if you don't, don't worry about it. the other thing we have is compressions only cpr, someone untrained or unwilling to perform the rescue breath, keep doing the chest compression. >> and do it until somebody comes. >> keep doing this until somebody who is trained comes along and can take over for you. and until the scene becomes unsafe, or until an aed arrives and is able to -- use the aed the minute you get it. >> you did mention if you see bleeding, though, if you do see bleeding, should you not do the -- not attempt anything? >> no, you still want to get help, but also want to just deal with what is the most significant thing at the time. if there is severe bleeding, perhaps somebody else can help you try to suppress the bleeding by applying pressure. >> show us with the little babies. >> with the little baby, there are a few changes. that is you use your two fingers and then you put it in the center of the chest. and you're going to, again, do about 100 beats a minute. but when i did the breaths on the adult, i tilted, i pinched the nose and put my mouth around the victim's mouth. when i'm working on a baby, you put your mouth around their nose and mouth. >> because they're so little. >> pull it back? >> they're actually seem like they're contradictory, but that's what gives them their potency. the first is a sense of exceptionality, that you're special. that can come from many sources, like an innate talent or a parent that instills that sense of you're special. the second quality is almost the opposite, a sense of insecurity, that you need to prove yourself, that what you have done isn't quite enough yet. and final is impulse control, which is strictness, discipline, ability to resist temptation. >> what makes this controversial is you broke it down into, i guess, ethnics or cultural groups you say some are more likely to succeed than others. >> yeah, but, you know, the book is about individuals, not groups. and there are many, many individuals not from the groups we're talking about who have all these qualities, have all these triple package qualities. president obama is a great example. justice sonia sotomayor, another terrific example. >> these are groups you identified and studied? >> but we want to say there are way more than eight groups. >> of course. >> in the book we say there is literally dozens of groups outperforming the national average. >> egyptian american -- >> i hoping we were in the pool. >> why not? is that because of the way they have been raised? i have an asian driver, a chinese man with me for 30 years, i say why are all the -- >> everybody says that. it is this high expectation idea, which what do you mean by superiority and insecurity? that's a high expectation. you can be the top, you know, that's how much we believe in you. you've got it in you to be it. and now you've got to be it. if you're not quite good enough just now, now you have to work hard. >> seems like you're if the child of an immigrant, you have some of that. my parents are very strict and expected things. you think as it waters down as it goes down. does anyone sort of wind up in the same pool as -- >> one of the most interesting things we found in the course of our research, you know that asian-american kids, famously score higher, better grades. it turns out in the third generation, no difference whatsoever between -- >> very much -- >> not innate. not biological. it is culture. it is working hard. and our question is how are they doing it?
