Well talk to barry gibb later on. Also more on those overnight terror arrests seven days away from the Olympic Games. But let us start with our top story today. Belowfreezing temperatures ushering in another i da of potential problems across the south. This as officials in georgia face a lot of criticism over their handling of that storm. Nbcs tom costellos in atlanta. Tom, good morning to you. Reporter matt, good morning. 19 degrees here in atlanta. Ive been on the highways and the byways, if you will, the other roads, and were still seeing very slick, treacherous conditions. Black ice. I didnt see a single salt truck out there. Weve still got hundreds, even thousands of cars abandoned. All of this because of a sheet of ice and one to three inches of snow. Gridlock in atlanta. Thousands of people stranded in their cars for hours. I was in the car for 20 hours. 18, almost 20 hours. Reporter now the aftermath. Im not going to get into that blame game. Reporter why did things get so bad here . The error, and we have shared responsibility for the error, was everybody letting out at once. Which caused a massive traffic jam. The National Weather service had continually had their mojdsimojds i mojdsing showing that the city of atlanta would not be the primary area where the storm would hit. Reporter it was tuesday when crews began treating the roads around atlanta, but by afternoon rush hour, the city was paralyzed. Its been pretty, pretty rough. A total nightmare out here. Reporter by wednesday morning, the National Guard was mobilized to help. The greatest need has really been water and making sure that theyve been fed and keeping warm. Reporter 11,000 kids at a school had to spend tuesday night away from mom and dad, many on the floor in the school gym. The roads too dangerous for buss to take kids home or parents to pick them up. I was waiting for her. And she got on a bus like at 6 00 last night. And were just now getting here to get them. Reporter with abandoned cars and trucks littering the highways, home depots across the area stayed open, giving stranded commuters an unlikely place to crash overnight. I slept in the Hallmark Card aisle by some birthday cards, unfortunately. Reporter some slept on the floor of other retailers. Their stories shared on social media. Among the frustration came hope, strangers helping strangers. And a baby girl, Grace Elizabeth anderson, born on the side of the highway after her parents car got trapped in the congestion. Were hoping and praying that we were going to make it to the hospital on time, but, you know, its all good. Things didnt quite go as planned. Reporter in all, less than three inches of snow brought the city to a standstill. And the recovery is still under way. Theyve still declared a Civil Emergency here in atlanta. That will go till about noon or so eastern time, 9 00 a. M. On the pacific coast. They hope people will stay off the roads, kids are out of school and they want to give the city time to recover. There seems to be great debate over the answer of this one. Mr. Mayor, you have did the information you needed . Did you have the forecast you needed to make the right calls before this snow arrived . The answer is yes, but its not solely about my call. In the city of atlanta, we have the state, we have myself, and we have the School System which are all separate. And in the city of atlanta, we started our snow treatment at 9 00 a. M. After getting our weathercast between 4 00 and 5 00. And almost every photo that you just showed is not in the city of atlanta. In fact, within 24 hours, the roads in the city of atlanta were more than 80 passable. So i just reviewed your report, and it focused almost exclusively on our citys highways. Which the city does not have jurisdiction for, and most of those simply were not in the city of atlanta. And im trying not to play the blame game here. Sure. Im not pointing fingers at anyone, but then let me make it more general. Did officials of one level or another fail to make proper calls based on accurate forecasting that was coming from the National Weather service . Matt, heres what happened. We made an error in the way that we released our citizens. So the state made a judgment to release state employees, private businesses made that judgment, and i made the call, and aps made the call. If i had where was the coordination between those Different Levels . And i think you were at lunch with the governor as it started to snow. Did anyone talk to each other and say lets not release everybody at the same time . Ive already acknowledged that i think that that was a mistake. And i was at lunch, but i had already ordered our streets to start being pretreated by 9 00 a. M. , which is why on yesterday if the cameras had focused on the city limits, they would have seen that 80 of our streets are passable. And if you were in atlanta right now, you would see that the streets in the city of atlanta are clear. Weve had zero fatalities. Weve handled more than 797 accidents. And we reunited all of the children in the city of atlanta with their families. And mr. Mayor and the photos youre showing right now arent even photos of the city of atlanta. All right. Theyre obviously in the area surrounding atlanta. Let me ask you well, then yall should say that, matt. Okay. And im saying it right now. This is the surrounding area. Its easy for people in the northeast, i think, mr. Mayor to sit up here because were kind of used to snowstorms and maybe even snicker a little bit and say this was the result of inexperience. Did a lack of experience with this kind of weather on a regular basis play a role here . I think that it certainly plays a role. We dont have a Severe Weather events of this kind often in the city of atlanta or in georgia. And so i think its fair to say that it definitely played a role. But the city of atlanta invested 2. 5 million in snow equipment. And that was the reason that is the reason that right now our streets are passable. And real quickly, nobody loves monday morning quarterback, im sure you dont like it right now, but the only thing useful from a monday morning quarterback is lessons. Whats learned from this . Matt, what is learned from this is that the state, the city, the school board and our private businesses need to stagger releasing our citizens to go home during Severe Weather events. I think it would have made a major difference if we had released our school and parents first, if private business had had been left second, and then if government had left last sending home nonessential employees and retaining the employees we needed to keep our city safe. We have breaking news in russia this morning with a week to go until the winter olympics, officials have identified two suicide bomber responsible for the attacks that killed 34 people last month and arrested two suspected accomplices. As athletes, their families and fans are starting to make their way to sochi, today russia trying to reassure them and reassure the world that these games will be successful, and most of all will be safe. Russia today identified the two suicide bombers who carried out those twin suicide attacks over the new year in the city of volgograd and also said forces had had arrested two suspects accomplices. Two brothers from the republic of dagestan that according to russian officials helped transport the bombers to their attackers. A senior Russian Security official said that he had no intelligence of any suicide bombers on the loose, no reports of any suicide bombers having made their way into sochi. And he said most of all, there is no intelligence whatsoever according to russias view of any Credible Threats against the games. So what were seeing are two very different messages. One in media reports and coming from u. S. Officials, that there is a threat and that its real and that today russia stressing it has everything under control. A new Study Suggests Childhood Obesity starts at an early age. Researchers say if a child is overweight in kindergarten, he or she is four times more likely than normal weight children to become obese by eighth grade and likely remain obese into adulthood. Children who were large at birth and overweight by kindergarten were found to be at the highest risk of becoming obese by age 14. And one researcher says schools should focus on kids who are overweight and try to encourage exercise and healthy eating. Well, new hope for children with peanut allergies. An experimental therapy that slowly introduced small amounts of peanut flour into an allergic childs diet has shown promising results in britain. After six months of treatment, more than 80 of the children who ate a handful or could eat rather a handful of peanuts while experts are encouraged, they warn this is not something, though, that parents should try at home. Peanut allergies do affect about 1 in 50 children worldwide. And well never be royals but that doesnt mean we cant be served a beer by one. Many are starting to wonder whether the pop star is spinning out of control. A crush of cameras, screaming fans and the cops met Justin Bieber as he arrived at a Toronto Police station late wednesday. Inside bieber faced an assault charge from december when he was in charge for a maple leafs game. The limo driver claims he was repeatedly hit in the back of the head by one of the passengers. Its uncleared if it was bieber or a member of his entourage. Something has happened in the last six months where he seems to be going off the rail. Reporter he was also taughting his new music video on instagram. But lately hes drawing more attention for his brushes with the law than his music. Earlier this month police in l. A. Raided the singers house after he was accused of egging a neighbors home. No charges yet. And more than 166,000 people have signed a petition asking that he be deported. Hes due in court march 10th. Reporter good morning, tamron. Were expecting a verdict in this case within hours. And the speculation is that amanda knox along with her former boyfriend will be found guilty. It was the last chance for amanda knoxs defense. In closing arguments before the two judges and section jurors, the lawyers argued that probability was not sufficient to convict. Both knox and her codefendant maintain their innocence in the murder and brutal Sexual Assault seven years ago of knoxs roommate. Rudy, a drifter and lowlevel drug dealer, is serving a 16year sentence for the murder. Knoxs verdict was later overturned. Then Italys Supreme Court rejected that decision, ruling that more than one person participated in the crime. Knoxs decision to boycott the appeal and follow the case from her hometown seattle may have hurt her standing with the judges. Its strictly not required to attend by law. Reporter the alleged murder wep weapon was subjected to another round of investigation. Again, no dna from the victim. The prosecution is now suggesting the motive for murder was a heated argument over bathroom hygiene or stolen money. Defense lawyers today called the prosecutions conclusion shocking. The victims family is expected to be in court for the verdict, waiting like the press and the public in florence for the italian courts to deliver justice for the third time. When you were diagnosed the first time with Kidney Cancer, i think, emma, you were in sext gra sixth grade, is that about right . You noticed she was tearing out the napkin and putting them in a notebook. I found out she was tearing them out and dating them. I found out later that the reason she was doing that was she was trying to keep a piece of me. What did those notes to you when you heard that diagnosis, emma . I guess they meant i would have a part of my dad with me, no matter what happened, this were always there. You kept writing the note and now youre diagnosed with cancer a second time. And in some way they go from being inspirational to in some way a father keeping a promise to a daughter. Absolutely. Last fall theres always been an implied promise in our household that she would have a note in her lunch, a hand packed lunch and a note from me. Last year i read about this great guy alex sheen and he started this movement called promise cards and because i said i would. They say he had two passions, blowing things up, so there were explosives are pipe bombs, dynamite, everything around them all the time and drugs. So they were always dealing with that and went through 57 nannies and care givers in these kids lives coming and going. None of this many screened. Some of them tried to help. Some of them were part of the brutality. You followed their journey. I know georgia wants to do some advocacy work so there hopefully is an up side to their story and their lives. She said their inheritance is blood money. And she said she would have traded places with anybody at any time, and so does the son. I want to get your thoughts. Justin bieber, making headlines the last couple weeks, the egging incident, the drag racing, speeding and now he may have assaulted a limo driver. What advice would you give this kid . You worry about it because theres nobody in the loop who has the authority or the power to grab this kid by the scruff of the neck and say, come on, dont do this to yourself. Hes on selfdestruct. I dont think everything hes accused of is as bad as hes saying but hes under a spotlight. And i dont see one person of responsibility and maturity talking in this kids ear saying, hey, calm down before you blow it all. Let me tell you, hes had a big 15 minutes but it can sure be over. In texas, a High School Student bullied. Her family said shes going to sue. Is that the right way to handle the situations . The schools always get involved. The schools say if it doesnt help on campus, we cant help. Wrong. Theyre your students. You need to help. And parents, dont run to the school with your hair on fire. You need to address this. M. , Metro Atlanta is added to the storm watch, which included amounts of snow. Then by monday evening, it was upgraded to a Winter Weather advisory for hazardous condition, early tuesday morning, Winter Weather advisory upgraded to a warning, eight hours later the snow starts and thats when all hell broke loose. There it is. The warning is there. You cant claim you didnt know it was coming. Some of the scenes, people sleeping at home depot, sleeping in their cars and giving birth on the interstate. There have been a lot of Great Stories of people going out and buying food and water, walking the highway. Teachers improving in these classrooms. So many kids had to shelter in place in their schools, principals and teachers did such an incredible job. The mayor was on earlier, and matt was asking if officials made errors in preparation. Did officials of one level or another fail to make proper calls based on accurate forecasting that was coming from the National Weather service . Matt, heres what happened. We made an error in the way that we released our citizens. So the state made a judgment to release state employees, private businesses made that judgment and i made the call and aps made the call. And where was the coordination between those Different Levels . I think you were at lunch with the governor as it started to snow. Did anyone talk to each other and say lets not release everybody at the same time . Ive already acknowledged that i think that that was a mistake and i was at lunch, but i had already ordered our streets to start being pretreated by 9 00 a. M. That was too late. That was too late. The mistake the mayor made and it went down the line, the mayor, the governor, other mayors and state and school officials, there is no coordination. They should have a plan. This happened in 2011. They said this is not going to happen again and, boom, it did. And all people want from their elected officials is that, you know what, you have a plan. And a coordinated plan between all agencies that need to react. They didnt have one and the people of that area paid the price. Its not just the mayor of atlanta. Other mayors and municipalities. If youre above 25, youre overweight, over 30 youre obese. How do i find bmi . Because its a ratio and high squared, its easier to go online and do a weight calculator. Men and women are calculated identically. But men are more muscular so their numbers are a little higher. The ill Health Effects are equivalent for both sexes above 25. Next one is 16. And this has to do this is for men and women, has to do with respiration rate. This is the number of breaths a minute you take. The average is 10 to 18, around 16. Were supposed to feel all the fabrics and stuff. Yes. It feels like the fabric of our life. Yes. So one of the things i think people think of, when you dont get enough sleep during the week, you think on the weekends i can make up for it. Is that part of the deal . You know what . Actually you do. Youre going to be tired on the weekends, youll probably sleep more, but the problem is that dont take into consequences of what happens the next day. If you get one hour of sleep less in one night, you can show signs of aging. We see increases levels of inflammation and increased level of heart attack by losing i should be dead. Many of us never get that kind of sleep and havent for years and years and years, why are we functioning at least at half level . Your function may be at half level, if you were sleeping more, that seven, eight, nine hours of sleep, you would be fufrnsi in functioning at a higher level. Research after Research Shows that. Some people take an aid that helps them sleep. I heard it is better to take the sleep aid and sleep than to not take it and not sleep. The research at nih showed we get 11 extra minutes of sleep when we take a lot of those sleep aids, especially prescription sleep aids. There is consequences associated with that. Shortterm use, theyre wonderful to do. Longterm, not such a great idea. There is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for insomnia that works better than sleep medications. You say avoid any kind of stimulant or depressant after 7 00 at night. Actually, yes. A lot of people 8 30. A lot of people do use alcohol in order to help them fall asleep. It will make you fall asleep quicker, but unfortunately there is a rebound effect with alcohol and you wake up a lot more at night, even if you dont remember awakenings, you have fragmented sleep. What about tv, a lot of people have the tv on while crashing. A lot of men like to use television and their partner, if it is a female, has to suffer through that as well. It decreases the amount of melatonin we produce. For women, we have a decreased melatonin, decreased amount of sleep, we have a higher risk of breast cancer. For men, it is a higher risk of prostate cancer. Shut the television off and get that out of the bedroom. Youre a lovely man, but unbelievably depressed. What kind of mattress, pillows and stuff are the best for a good nights sleep . It is all about support. Whether it is a foam mattress, memory foam, latex or inner spring mattress, that really isnt what matters. That is prifrnieferential. Small levels of support change are going to impact how you sleep and the pain you have the next day. All kinds of beds now that are one partner can have it one way and the other person can have it the other way. Thats great. That never existed before. Exactly. That is a good idea. If you can do that and have a different surface, you get the support you need. Thats a wonderful idea. Real quick, we have a couple of questions. One short one, corrine says she has trouble sleeping because her mind is too busy to rest. I think a lot of people have that. We do. Were actually kind of working all the way up until the time we go to bed, were watching television, on the computer, were on facebook, were doing a lot of technology. Right up until the time to go to bed. We shut it off and expect our mind to shut off. It doesnt work that way. Prepare for bed. Get in a dark environment, do stretching, meditation and thats going to help you fall asleep. Get down on your knees like this, hodi. My knees hurt. I cant do this.
