friday, january 17th, 2014. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today." with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. >> and good morning, everyone, welcome to "today" on a friday morning. i'm savannah guthrie. >> and i'm carson daly alongside al roker, natalie morales. matt has the morning off. >> you have a problem with the new 50? >> i think 60 is the new 50. >> i'm glad we have something to look forward to. >> it's far off in the distance. >> oh. >> very far. >> coming for you. >> before we know it. >> well, let's get right to our top story this morning, the dangerous wildfire in california that's damaged or destroyed two dozen buildings and forced some 3,700 people to evacuate. >> this morning, nearly 700 firefighters are working to contain those flames. let's get to nbc's miguel almaguer, who is in irwindale, east of los angeles. miguel, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. fire season here in southern california is year round, but a blaze in the middle of january this size is unusual. this winter fire has destroyed already five homes and firefighters across the region are joining the firefight. >> reporter: overnight, fueled by wind chewing the bone-dry terrain, the so-called colby fire threatened to again go out of control. >> water dumped on homes. don't see that often. >> reporter: the blaze barrelled toward million dollar properties, the inferno moving so quickly, firefighters gave extra hoses to neighbors to join the fight. >> when it was coming down, it jumped like 50 feet in no time at all. flying down the hill. >> reporter: with hot embers flying through the sky and trees shooting flames into the air. >> everyone aware? evacuations in place? >> reporter: 5,000 scrambled to evacuate. most getting out with just the clothes on their back. the historic singer mansion owned by the famed sewing company singer was surrounded by flames. the guest home, a complete loss. ron galway barely escaped with his life. >> it went so quick. it was like, get out. >> reporter: the damage could have been worse because this area was already under a high fire threat. when the blaze broke out, crews were already scattered all across the region. >> reporter: this morning, three men are in custody. police say their illegal campfire sparked the blaze. with most evacuation orders lifted -- >> my structure is still standing, thankfully. >> reporter: -- crews warn the drought-stricken hills remain a tinderbox. this fire has chewed across nearly 2,000 acres. crews are making progress, the blaze at least 30% contained. the next few hours, though, will certainly be critical. savannah? >> we know you're watching, miguel almaguer, thank you so much. >> take a look at this photo. the fire is so intense, the smoke plume can be seen from space. we spoke with daryl osby this morning. >> we heard 30% contained, does that sound about right? and what are your biggest worries here today? as the sun rises, we will have additional wind and 80 degree weather. we have crews working all night to keep all embers contained within the fire perimeter. >> it seems unusual in january to have a fire this continues. the drought continues and winds to battle. what is the red-flag warning that was issued until friday? >> the red flag warning is for high temperatures, low humidity, in the northeast. this is extreme drought season. this is a third year of an ongoing drought in southern california. and we kept records for over 100 years. and this is the driest year on record. to date we've had less than 1 inch of rainfall, and the hills and brush and trees here are critical stage as you would see in the summer in dryness. ripe for a large and wildfire. >> how on edge do other communities in the area need to be? >> we're extremely concerned because this is a third year of an ongoing drought. everything's extremely dry. result in 100% chance of a fire. our ten-day forecast indicates no rain in sight. we'll have warm temperatures. all people need to be aware of potential fires. >> thank you and thanks to the firefighters on the ground there. great job. >> thank you very much. >> let's get to al because as the chief just mentioned, weather is a huge factor here. >> there is no end in sight. here is the pattern, the same pattern, jet stream up to the north. and big ridge of high pressure has built in. and this is the next ten days at least. and as you can see, look at how extensive the extreme drought is. in the last week it's extended 27% to 62% in california. here's the fire from space, the satellite, the colby fire. and they'll continue to blow. the santa ana winds. coming down the mountain. dry, humid warm air. there's no humidity in the air. vegetation very dry. this is critical for rapid fire growth. look at the red flag warnings, how huge they are throughout much of california. and you can also see for today the fire weather forecast is extremely high throughout southern california. and, guys, this ridge is staying in place. it's not going anywhere soon. they're going to have big problems for at least the next 10 to 15 days. >> does not bode well, especially this time of year. al, thank you very much. after months of criticism over the nsa's spying programs, president obama delivering a major speech today planning to announce big changes. andrea mitchell is nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent. she has the latest on this. andrea, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. the president is expected to find a middle ground today, permitting the nsa to keep collecting telephone records but adding privacy protections and new restraints on the surveillance of foreign targets. today's reforms are partly a response from embarrassing leaks from edward snowden who revealed the u.s. listened in on german leader angela merkel's cell phone. and spied on brazil's president dilma rousseff. rousseff was so angry, she cancelled a state visit to washington. the president signaled he would order changes. >> just because we can do something doesn't mean we necessarily should. and the values that we've got as americans are ones that we have to be willing to apply beyond our borders. >> reporter: the white house is expected to call for privacy safeguards for foreigners, a first. until now such limits only applied to americans. the president is also expected to propose a privacy advocate for the secret intelligence court. despite objections from the court's judges. >> that would at least allow the court to hear both sides of the argument in these important cases. and certainly, that would be helpful. but it's probably not a substitute for actually reforming the laws and policies themselves. >> leading critics want the president to end the massive collection of telephone records now stored by the government. >> it was necessary to prevent terror attacks to existing authorities would be sufficient to deal with those threats. >> the president's changes will limit the telephone collection program, which is sure to create a furor with nsa supporters. >> this is not a rogue agency. this is an agency that's pretty much followed the rules and has a very high level of compliance most corporations wouldn't be enviable of. >> the president will say the government should no longer hold a massive collection of telephone records, but leave it up to congress, instead, to decide who should take that on before reauthorizing the program next year. that's a compromise that will only prolong this contentious debate, savannah. >> andrea mitchell in washington. thank you. let's bring in michael hayden, a former director of both the nsa and cia and now a principal with the group in washington. good morning. thanks for being with us. >> good morning, savannah. >> we now know the broad outlines of some of the changes the president is recommending today. do you think this will significantly change the way the nsa does business? or is this largely window dressing in your mind? >> no, i think it's a little bit more than window dressing. with regard to who holds the data, frankly, no one will hold it, as well, in all dimensions of the word well. than the national security agency. it's no surprise the president has punted that question to congress. with regard to querying the data, it appears the president will now demand that the nsa go to the fisa court before they ask the data a question. savannah, i was a director of nsa on september 11th. that procedure reminds me of the way we operated before the september 11th attack. now, that makes me uncomfortable because in addition to this specific thing, it sends a message to the bureaucracy that we're trending back to the old ways of doing business. >> do you think this policy debate, this conversation has been good and healthy? and honestly, do you think it would have happened if not for the disclosures by edward snowden? >> it probably would've happened. there are some powerful tectonic plates moving with regard to overall government transparency. snowden accelerated it. but savannah, snowden also misshaped the debate. there's a recent poll that said 25% of all americans believe nsa listens to their phone calls. and that's a product of what snowden put out there in a sensationalist way and the way it's been reported. >> we've seen so many disclosures. seems like once a week we're hearing about some new program that the nsa had. do you feel the nsa's playbook has essentially been exposed? and at what cost. >> this has been serious irreversible harm to the ability of the national security agency to collect legitimate foreign intelligence. matt olson the head of the counterterrorism center a few days ago pointed out that terrorists have already changed their communications patterns. look, people around the world now know more about the american intelligence process than they know about their own country's intelligence processes. that's not good for civil liberties or security. >> former nsa and cia director michael hayden, always good to get your perspective, sir. thanks for being with us. natalie's here with a new twist tied to chris christie's bridge investigation. >> new developments in the bridge backup scandal that's rocked the state of new jersey and its governor chris christie. 17 people and three organizations are now being issued subpoenas as part of the investigation. nbc's kelly o'donnell in trenton, new jersey, with the latest. good morning, kelly. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. the committee is expected to release the names of those after it is served. the list includes current and former staffers in christie's inner circle, his campaign and port authority. both the committee and the office of the governor have brought in former federal prosecutors to assist while the governor is on the move. >> reporter: arriving at a private home thursday night, governor chris christie attended a fundraiser for a fellow republican. just hours after state lawmakers launched a special committee. >> there's been an abuse of power. >> reporter: and issued 20 subpoenas aimed at christie's inner circle, his campaign and the port authority. to find out more about who ordered the traffic lane closures and why. >> there's no intention right now to subpoena the governor. >> reporter: christie did not take questions about the bridge traffic scandal. >> governor, can you be as effective given the investigation? >> reporter: but he said plenty that referenced the troubles. while visiting hurricane sandy survivors at the jersey shore. >> there are a few more cameras here today than we might have originally thought for a sandy event. >> reporter: christie promised that nothing would distract him from his day job. >> this is where i intend to spend the rest of my life. and whatever test they put in front of me, i will meet those tests because i'm doing it on your behalf. >> reporter: and governor christie will head to florida to assist governor rick scott and other republicans there. that is part of his role as the chair of the republican governors association. natalie? >> thanks so much. some terrifying moments thursday for united airlines passengers on a flight to beijing. the pilot was forced to retu th hitting severe turbulence and injured five flight attendants. passengers were rattled but uninjured. >> it was really fast. we lost a little bit of altitude and the plane went side to side. it was nerve-wracking. >> the flight attendants suffered minor injuries. united offered passengers hotels for the night and arranged for a new flight this morning. the man forever known as the professor has died. actor russell johnson played the professor on the 1960s tv show "gilligan's island" which ran for three seasons. then became a classic in reruns. the show is well known to several generations. russell johnson was 89 years old. and hollywood also mourning the loss of dave madden, best known for his role as ruben kinkade the child-hating band manager on "the partridge family." dave madden was 82 years old. and happy baby news to report, queen elizabeth welcoming her second great grandchild to the family. zara phillips has given birth to a baby girl. her name will be released in due course. this is the first child for phillips and her husband. the 32-year-old phillips is an olympic equestrian and the daughter of princess ann and captain mark phillips. and notice, i didn't have to be there standing outside for days and days on end. >> this is a royal baby you can get behind. >> trivia bonus. >> okay. >> what was the professor's name? >> oh, on the show? >> on the show. >> the professor. we only know him as -- >> roy hinkley. >> let me ask you a question. alice on "the brady bunch," what was her last name? >> i don't know. >> well, i do. >> you want to know?
