Matts been kind enough to yank himself away from the black jack table to join us. I was on a losing streak anyway. The press conference mike tyson had last week was exceptional. He was supposed to talk about his career as a boxing promoter. Instead he started talking about his demons. He said he was a vicious alcoholic, that he hated himself and was trying to kill him. It was a stunning public moment even for a guy whos had a number of stunning public moments. I sat down to talk about what appears to be the fight of his life. Well have that in the next halfhour. Back to you. We will look forward to that. Well begin with the breaking news tied to possible military action against syria. We have more from the pentagon. Good morning. Reporter good morning. This is clearly a new twist over the tensions between the u. S. And russia over potential u. S. Military attacks against syria. The russians announcing that they are sending a guided missile cruiser, the masva, and at least one antisubmarine warship into the eastern med where u. S. Warships are floating on standby. At this point u. S. Military officials are only calling it interesting and refuse to go so far as to call it provocative. Theyve point out that the russians normally have but b a dozen warships in the area and that they have their own military naval base there at tartus in syria. They acknowledge that in fact they do have some stake in the game. But as the u. S. Military has said repeatedly, theyre prepared to send a message to syria. It appears that president putin is sending a message to the u. S. Savannah . Jim miklaszewski at the pentagon where it will be very busy today. Thank you. Also today, the president will be making his case for possible air strikes in syria. Chuck todd is nbcs chief Political Correspondent and has more. Reporter today the white house is going to brief congressional leaders about syria and the chemical weapons issue there amid growing concern in congress that they should have a role in deciding about whether the u. S. Should strike militarily at Bashar Al Assads regime. Meanwhile, the president says he hasnt made a decision yet even as he starts to make the case as to why a shot across the bow at assad is necessary. President obama who ran for office on ending the iraq and afghanistan wars now admits hes on the verge of ordering a u. S. Military strike against syria because of the assad regimes use of chemical weapons. I have no interest in any kind of openended conflict in syria, but we do have to make sure that when countries break International Norms on weapons like chemical weapons that could threaten us that they are held accountable. Reporter in that interview with pbs, the president argued that because the assad regime has ties to terrorist organizations, u. S. National security is at stake. There is a prospect, a possibility in which chemical weapons that can have devastating effects could be directed at us. Reporter as the new cover of time out this morning demonstrates, this is a decision the commander in chief of a warweary nation enters reluctantly. And hes not alone. A growing number of members of congress on both sides of the aisle are calling for a vote to authorize a u. S. Attack. Republican House Speaker john boehner has penned a letter to the president filled with 14 pointed questions including what result is the administration seeking from its response and what is the intended effect of the potential military strikes. To address those concerns the white house will brief congressional leaders today. With u. S. Navy ships ready to strike if ordered, the president is emphasizing that any u. S. Intervention would be minimal. We are saying in a clear and decisive but limited way we send a shout across the bow saying stop doing this, that can have a positive impact on our National Security long term. Reporter one goal of the Obama Administration is to not go it alone in a potential military strike, but they may have to do that. As we found out now, the British Parliament is essentially holding up David Camerons plans to join in with the u. S. To do this, and according to Senior Administration officials here, savannah, whether the u. K. s in or not, it does not change the u. S. Plans. All right. Chuck todd, thank you very much. Lets turn to nbc news senior political analyst, david axelrod, former white house senior adviser. Good morning to you. Good morning, savannah. We know that congress will be briefed this morning on how the president justifies this action, the intelligence case for it. Do you think he needs to make that case in some public forum to explain to the American People why these actions are justified . Especially in light of the faulty intelligence that led this country into iraq . Well, without a doubt. If he makes a decision to go and i dont think theyd be having highlevel meetings with Congress Today if some decision hasnt been reached hell have to speak to the American People. Im sure that he will speak to the American People. This is, though, different from iraq because theres visual evidence that everyone has seen. Theres a brad con a broad consensus here. I dont think were facing the same skepticism where there was for iraq where the weapons of mass destruction were used as a justification for an attack. There clearly, something happened here, something dramatic, and the president feels he has to act. David, you know this president extremely well. You know him to be a man of caution. Particularly when it comes to intervening in conflicts in other countries. I have to ask you, though, is this a case where his caution has backfired . A year ago, every expert said it might have tipped the balance if the u. S. Had taken action. Even Hillary Clinton and David Petraeus urged him to take action in syria, and he rejected that. Did he miss the moment to really make a difference here . What he would say is he believes now as he did then that military intervention toward regime change by the United States would not have been the right thing to do. Here, hes reacting to a specific act, the use of chemical weapons, and presumably what they do will be to try and knock out the capacity to use them and send a strong message to assad that he cant use these weapons. And he feels that theres a national interest, National Security interest because of the relationship between syria and hezbollah and because of the violationf International Norms. You mentioned sending a message, and that does seem to be the objective is to deter but also to send a message. Some have said shouldnt there be a larger strategic goal. Is it a mistake to kind of dip your toe into this con one expert was quoted saying thats like winning a school yard fight than accomplishing anything of strategic meaning. The president said yesterday his view sending a strong message about the use of these weapons is the discreet mission. You point out he is leary about interventions and he ran for president in part on his view that iraq had been a mistake, we had to be more prupt how we . Jected military force. He wants to pursue it in that way and not a broader military attack. David axelrod, former white house adviser, good to get your perspective. There you new developments in the wild fire. Positive news this morning. Good morning. Firefighters are starting to make progress on a Massive Wildfire burning near Yosemite National park. The rim fire is about 30 contained. They still have a long way to go. Miguel almaguer has the laters. Good morning. Reporter as this monster fire closes in on 300 square miles firefighters are making progress as you mentioned, containment is up about 30 now, it should be 100 contained to say firefighters should have fire breaks around the perimeter of the fire within two weeks though this fire is continuing to burn, it will burn until first snow until winter. This fire is raging in forest land now. Its feeding on dry brush and wind. Some 4,000 firefighters are battling this blaze. They slowed the flames, not the smoke. Seen from 100 miles away. Poor air quality forced some sco schools to shut down. The fire fight tamron, continues. Thank you very much. U. S. Army major nidal hasan has been sentenced to death. A 13member courtmartial panel deliberated about two hours before reaching that unanimous verdict. Hasan was convicted for the murders of 13 people after a 2009 shooting rampage at ft. Hood, texas. The sentencing will be appealed. Caught on camera a massive land slide in Southern China brings traffic to a halt. Looked like a waterfall as it cascaded on the busy highway below. The landslide took out part of a communications station. Cars lined up for nearly two hours as drivers waited to go around. Officials say heavy rain is to blame for with what you are seeing. According to a government survey, about 12 million americans have used a sleep aid. Survey about 12 million americans have used a sleep aid just in the last month. Dr. Carol ash is director of sleep medicine at Meridian Health in new jersey. Good to see you, willie. 12 million in a month. A few years ago it was 60 million prescriptions written. That was up 20 from five years prior. Why this big spike . Its a real problem. Its an epidemic. 60 million prescriptions for sleeping pills alone are written. And this survey looked at not just filling prescriptions, but who is using the sleeping pills. What we found is 6 to 7 of people greater than age 50. It tends to be more common in women that are older, educated, and that to me speaks volumes. You put those together. Women, educated and older. Why that combination . Well, think about it for a second. Women have more physiologic challenges. They have the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause. Also more access, awareness and access to health care providers. Were finding doctors are still filling out prescriptions like candy and not getting at the root cause. Something that jumped off the page to me as i read this study, sleep aids used by people who get five hours or less of sleep a night. I get that. Also by a great number of people who get nine hours or more a night. Whats the deal with that . Really good insight on your part. Less than nine hours sounds intuitive. More than nine speaks to restless sleep. Youre not getting good quality sleep. One hour worth of sleep is not enough. You need more and more of it. When you understand how complex sleep is, you have to break down the reasons why someone is not sleeping. Theres many, many reasons. If you go to a doctor and just say my sleep is restless, the knee jerk reaction is to write that prescription instead of diving in and finding out why. Quickly, for all these people who are taking these sleep aids, what do we know about long term effects . It can be a problem. They can be addictive. When you try to come off them you can see rebound problems with worsening insomnia. Youre at risk for falls, breathing problems and even bizarre behavior. There are simple solutions. Theres Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help you relearn how to sleep. Destressing with exercise, mindfulness, medication. And finding a sleep doctor that really can get to the root of the problem in helping you get past it. Still a lot we dont know about all these pills that are being taken. He has now been reunited with his rescuers. Nbcs john yank has the story. Nathan weossner returned to michigan city, indiana, in a big way. A ceremony with people hed never met. 139 police, firefighters and construction and utility workers who rescued him. Last month nathan was swallowed up by mt. Balldy, a 126 foot sand dune on the shores of lake michigan, falling nearly 14 feet into a sink hole apparently created by a decayed tree. It took more than three hours of frantic digging to get him out. He arrived at the hospital in critical condition. But he was home in just two weeks. They call it the miracle on mt. Baldi. Wednesday nations parents expressed their gratitude. He is alive because of the diligence and the grace of your hands and by the grace of god. We will always be so grateful for what you gave. And you will always be our heroes. Reporter those who saved him got awards. Nathan got a backpack for school and camouflage pants. The new first grader took it all in stride. But for his rescuers, it was emotional. Its a great feeling to know that hes still here and he gets to be a normal 6yearold boy. Mike tyson has never been shy about expressing his feelings and emotions in public. But last weeks press conference was candid even by mikes standards. He admitted to falling off the wagon, to having thoughts of suicide and even said hes not sure how much longer hell be alive. Its clear that whether hes battling an opponent in the ring or demons in his own head, mike tyson pulls no punches. When i start drinking and i relapse, i think of dying. Im in a real dark mood, i think of dying. And i dont know. I dont want to be around no more. Reporter mike tyson is known as a brutal competitor. Iron mike in the boxing ring. But it was his Brutal Honesty last week that has people talking. I wont survive if i dont get help. Reporter turning a press conference that was supposed to be about his first night as a boxing promoter into a public confessional. Im on the verge of dying because im a vicious alcoholic. Reporter the former heavyweight champion went off script. And into the deepest recesses of his psyche. Im negative. And im dark. And i want to do bad stuff. Reporter one of the moments of the press conference that struck me, and i watched it a couple of times, you pointed at your head. And you said, its dangerous to hang out in this neighborhood. Alone. Alone, yes. Up here, right . It wants to kill everything. It wants to kill me. All i could think of was what a tough way to go through life on a daily basis, kind of fearing whats going on in your own head. Im so happy you dont have to go through that. Yeah. It is kind of strange and scary. Reporter how long has that been going on . I was born that way. Reporter during the candid press conference, tyson confessed his latest sins. Falling off the wagon. And lying to friends and family about it. Ive been sober 12 days now. Its tough. Im mean and irritable. Reporter at the press conference it had been six days. You said this is heavy stuff here. I looked at your face as you were saying it. It looked like it was a real challenge for you to get through those six days. Yeah. Its a real challenge, because i dont like i dont know if i like this sober guy. Its hard for me to live normal. Straight is hard. Reporter tysons wife kiki is trying to keep him on that straight path. Whens our anniversary . June 10th. No. June you got the right month. Im sorry. 6th . June 6th. All right reporter cameras captured moments from their marriage for the new documentary series being mike tyson. Which also takes him back to his Old Neighborhood in brooklyn. In one scene we go to the school thats right down the street from our Old Neighborhood. And we go in there, and it reminds me of prison. Its just no its just chaotic. Its no control. People go nuts. The kids are beautiful. You know, and im just saying, wow, this is me at one point. I didnt know you know, i didnt really think reporter youre smiling about it. You didnt seem to mind it too much. No. It was fun. I found out a lot about myself. Reporter like . Im a very scared young boy. Reporter im listening to you say that, mike. Im thinking, this is the guy i watched terrorize opponents in the ring. And hes telling me hes a scared little boy. And it just doesnt make sense. Im very vulnerable, you know. I was very vulnerable. Being in brownville, evoking memories. Reporter tyson has made amends to many old friends. And even some old foes. Oh, im in the dream day after day. Reporter but some things he wont apologize for. Ive heard you take responsibility over the years for a lot of bad behavior. Ive never heard you talk and say you want to take responsibility or even apologize for what happened with desiree washington. Im curious if youre at that stage in your life now. Well, i dont really think i have to make amends to that. Because ive done nothing. I really didnt do anything to her. I didnt rape her. I didnt beat her. I didnt do anything to her. And im not going to make amends. I made amends to myself. But to her, no. Reporter tyson was convicted on rape charges and spent three years in prison. So does that period in your life haunt you . Not as much as it used to. Reporter explain that to me. It just doesnt. It really doesnt. It just doesnt no more. Im at peace with myself pretty much. Reporter and he shows it. In the upcoming hbo special undisputed truth, a recording of the one man show he has performed on stages around the world. In it he shares the advice hetr and you remember, mike, be careful how you fight your fight. The way you fight your wife is the way you live your life. You said one time one of the things you learned is that to succeed greatly you have to be willing to fail greatly. Oh, 100 . No one failed more than i did. Nobodys seen more than ive seen. Im the king of the barbarians. Theres no one that could pass me in the pain ive endured. Reporter that brings up obviously tough memories for you, that pain. Yeah. Thats probably so. But i can deal wit. I can handle it. Youre going to see a lot more of mike tyson in the coming months. The show premieres on fox sports on september 22nd. Princess diana, just 36, killed in a paris car crash. The glamorous, world famous mother of two young princesses. Harry was just 12 years old. So the idea that she was murdered at the direction of members of the royal family seems farfetched. Yet the claim is made again in the new book. The author says diana was killed by members of the elite British Special forces known as the s. A. S. The bottom line for me is justice must be done. The truth must come out. People must know that diana was murdered and do something about i it. Reporter Scotland Yard is investigating claims which stem from a former s. A. S. Soldier. That commandos credibility is being questioned. One journalist who has followed the case closely says dianas death was an accident. I dont think the conspiracy theorists surrounding dianas death are credible. Reporter in the new movie, Actress Naomi Watts plays diana. The movie, too, is being described as speculation by the very man who was the focus of dianas attention. Dr. Hasnat kahn told a british newspaper it is a complete lie. I have never given any approval for the movie. It is based on got sissip, he s and dianas friends talking about a relationship they didnt know much about. And some of my relatives, they didnt know much about it either. One of the journalists to speak to diana just three weeks before the crash told nbc news via skype that she shared with him some of her hopes for the future. Her sons were suggesting that she might move to america. Reporter but he, too, does not believe she was murdered. He says 16 years after her death, the remaining question is simply this. You know, why does that make you i dont know. Because i think its a possibility thats beautiful. In every area, a lot of stuff that looks impossible is not. And every day, theres evidence of it. Reporter every six weeks an mri gives doctors a chance to see how the cancer is progressing. In june, the tail end of that three to sixmonth prognosis, harper with her husband by her side undergoes the nerveracking test. Im not expecting good news. I mean, i cant set myself up to that. Well just see what it says. Im a little nervous, to tell the truth. Reporter harpers doctor repeals the results and they are astounding. The scans showed a striking improvement in her condition. So if you were assessing vals condition in laymans terms right now, what would you say . Id say were getting pretty close to remission. Wow. Really . Yeah. Do you think she can beat this . It defies the odds. Its great to hear. Problem is, anytime this can change. Yeah, exactly. Its volatile. Tomorrow morning something could happen . You could get resistance to the therapy. I received an anonymous email from an anonymous person who basically was extorting me and blackmailing and attached newt todays of me. Saying if you dont do this well do this . Correct. Reporter the fbi is investigating. Youre about to see how easy it is for crooks to do it. We ask the this security expert to set up an experiment. From these teen girls to the entire family at the dinner table. Little did they know, thousands of miles away, our expert has broken into their laptops and turned on their webcams. People who are victims generally have no idea that they are victims. Reporter dont worry, we have the dads permission, but no one else in the family knew. Our expert got if by sending them this innocent looking ecard with a virus. They clicked a link in the card. In reality, i loaded a trojan in that computer during that time. Reporter we told carin, the mom and daughters we came over to do a general story about online security. Any problems here, anyone hack into your systems at home . I dont think so, no. Then downstairs, we let mom in on the secret. We actually recorded your family dinner the other night, no one was in your house except for you guys. Its really creepy. I mean, my children are in their computers in the evening in the bedrooms. Im a little frightened right now for their computer. Reporter so we took it up a notch. Having our expert hack into the webcam in her daughters upstairs bedroom where they were waiting with our producer. Were watching them live right now inside their bedroom. How is that morning commute going . Check in with mike. We have our chopper over here, this is an unusual pattern, used to seeing some backup to the san mateo bridge toll plaza. Look at this chopper shows you 92 off 880 toward the toll plaza, you are growing very, very slow traffic, all the way over toward the toll plaza and continuing across the bay. You are crawling 10 to 15 miles a hour at times, you head across the flat section there is the jam as folks try to avoid that bay bridge because they have to. You cannot cross on interstate 80. 92 very slow as well. 84, the dumbarton bridge, shows a heavy volume of traffic as well. The lighter traffic, folks planned other alternate routes or tried knot to go in today, 880 is slow but not as bad as we could see t again this is today and tomorrow and in through the weekend. Now, the eastshore freeway, very slow as well from berkeley and the area around the golden gate field area, you are losing a lane as you approach powell and then it is jammed approaching that brickley curve, north 880 and west 580, also slow into the maze as folks reroute around bait bridge and backup on the closure there. Ive been able to have this blessed opportunity to talk to other families with a similar situation and let their voice be heard. I love that youre taking something terrible in your own life and trying to make it something positive for other people. What kind of things will we expect to see in the show . Ive had an opportunity to travel coast to coast. We were in a blizzard in michigan and the heat of miami. There talking to families. Were going behind those headlines. Its easy to look at crime drama these days. People talk about these types of shows. But i really wanted to sit down and talk with people. I was with a dad whose daughter was killed. And he was breaking down in tears, and i said, i know where youre coming from. We literally hugged each other and wept together. Theres a lot of things happening. But i think it will be a show that brings people in and this is about heart and soul. Its about people who are behind the headlines. It means the world to me to have this opportunity. Id taken it off the hot part of the grill and let it sit. Now a great thing for this weekend, to me, those peppers, onions, everything, cucumbers, you know, theres so much of it in the market now and on the farm staff. So a little bit of orange juice a gazpacho. A cold, raw gazpacho. Orange juice, lemon juice, fresh. Olive oil. These recipes are so simple. Theyre on our website and the magazine. And the cucumbers, you put it all in the blender . In the blender. Er. S, a little habanero. And youre going to strain this after you blend it. Okay. Okay . So it will go. It churns up for you there. Im an introvert. Its true. Things like you find small talk incredibly cumbersome. You often feel alone in a crowd. Networking makes you feel like a phony. What are some of the other sort of signs of being an introvert . Another sign is that youre in a relationship with an extrovert. A lot of introverts tend to maybe take themselves a little too seriously. Its nice to have an extrovert who encourages them to have fun and get out. Another one is being called too intense or being called an old soul. Because a lot of introverts are very observant. Theyre deep thinker. They tend to be seen as very wise. Theyre not fear based. After theyve been in the spotlight they might need to rest and go home and have time alone. I think whats taxes for an introvert sometimes is constantly meeting people and being in very stimulating social environments where they have to do a lot of meet and greets and really excessive social interaction. How do you tell or can you tell early on in a child that theyre either shy or introverted . You look at even in an adult, you look at things like their sleep. Their ability to function during the day. Are they fear based throughout other parts of their life . Are they able to go to school, eat, all of the kind of medical types of things you would look at in Mental Health issues. But other than that, if theyre not really doing those things but they just kind of, like, know when they need to disengage and be in quiet time, theyre just probably introverts. That goes back to being sort of an observant, maybe a lot of writers and academics are introverts. I think it comes from that type of thinking. A selfcharger.
