This is today with lester holt and erica hill live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning, everyone. Welcome to today on a sunday morning. Im lester holt. And im Chris Jansing in for jenna wolfe. Welcome back. You made it. In san diego for comicon and took the red eye and got in moments ago. You were working . I was working. An important point. There is no cape. For those who have hd, youll know why they call it the red eye flight. Its kind of a tough turn around. We are happy to see you here. Thank you very much. We have a pretty gruesome case unfolding in cleveland. Police found several bodies and are searching for more as they try to figure out if there is a serial killer behind the murders. Kobe bryants parents are finally making money from selling his memorabilia. Able to auction off some of his stuff. Well tell you how much they were able to get. A little later as the world continues to wait and wait and wait for that royal baby, we will ask how will the queen do as a great grandmother . And what about Prince Charles as a grandfather . Do you think theyll spoil that child rotten . I think just a little bit. Possibility. Before we get to all that, lets turn to dylan with news in the east coast, that the heat wave is over. The heat wave is over officially. I want to remind you, its going to be cooler, but not necessarily cool. Were talking upper 80s instead of upper 90s. It did spark off heavier downpours, isolated thunderstorms. Boston hit a record high of 99 degrees friday. In new york city, this is the longest heat wave weve seen since 2002 and saturday in philadelphia was the seventh day of 90 degrees or higher. We are going to see much more comfortable temperatures, especially up across new england. Boston should hit 81 today. 82 tomorrow. Still in the mid to upper 80s in philadelphia and new york city. Each day will get progressively better. We are going to see those 80s hang on through much of this upcoming week. Were done with the 90s for a while and were done with the oppressive humidity. It is still very warm when you step outside this morning. It is summertime, after all. Chris . Dylan, thank you. Investigators are trying to figure out how a woman was thrown from a roller coaster at six flags in texas, an accident that ended up being fatal. With the latest on the investigation, good morning. Reporter good morning, chris. 51yearold Rosie Esparza of texas. It was her first visit to six flags and she was having a good time. A thrill ride that turned deadly within seconds. Investigators today are working to answer tough questions at is six flags over texas in arlington. A day and a half after a woman was ejected from the texas giant roller coaster. The guys that were sitting right behind the lady said right when they came down off the first bump and hit that first turn, she flew out. Witness reports are revealing terrifying moments and possible insight into the cause of the accident. Carmen brown told the Dallas Morning News the victim had expressed concern about the security of her safety restraint before the ride. She asked them more than once. The guy was like, as long as you heard it click, youre okay. Six flags has not commented on the safety restraint but did issue a statement that reads in part, it would be a disservice to the family to speculate regarding what transpired. This is the second deadly accident since the opening. A woman drowned and ten others were injured in a rafting accident. The texas giant is one of the biggest thrill rides at the park, with a drop of 47 feet. For now it remains closed as officials figure out how the ride went from thrilling to deadly in mere seconds. This morning, the texas giant remains at a standstill until investigators figure out exactly what went wrong. Chris . Charles hadlock, thank you. People are vowing to keep up the fight in honor of Trayvon Martin across the country. Thousands came out to remember martin and ask the federal government to step in and look into the circumstances surrounding martins death. Michelle franzen has more. This is about justice. Turning outrage into a call for change. I am trayvon. Trayvon martin. Trayvon martin. Reporter thousands turned out in a show of solidarity at justice for trayvon vigils coast to coast. Reverend sharpton organized rallies in 101 cities with several thousand turning out in new york, including the star power of beyonce and jayz, who were there to support Trayvon Martins mother. Not only do i vow to you to do what i can for Trayvon Martin, i promise you im going to work hard for your children as well. The common theme being a widespread call for the Justice Department to file federal civil rights charges against george zimmerman. Trayvon martins father, in miami, says its time to turn the anger and anguish into action. One of my missions is to make sure that we advocate against violence. An echo of the president s words after he unexpectedly spoke out on the verdict and likened himself to Trayvon Martin. Trayvon martin could have been me 35 years ago. Reporter those words hit home this weekend. When he stands up and says, i i was Trayvon Martin 35 years ago, it resonates. That, you cant weep under the rug. Reporter for today, michelle franzen, nbc news, new york. Lets bring in David Gregory now, moderator of meet the press. Good to see you. Good to see you. Dismissed the idea of some kind of federal commission. Was there a call to action, a dialogue he plans to lead . He was humble in his approach, as you say. Not saying that he as president has particular power but may have influence as an africanamerican. As you reread his 2008 speech, you see from the president someone who tries to provide context to these discussions, racially charged discussions in the country. And it was the stream of consciousness but more restrained remarks to try to seek some of that context. This next question may be more legal than political in nature. To the extent he talked about this experience, suggesting that this killing was racially motivated or somehow racially linked, does that make it more difficult as the federal government tries to look at whether there are federal charges to be filed here . Does it give the impression that the president is laying some pressure here . Thats a good question. I dont know that i can put my finger on it legally. I find it striking that the president , i thought, was trying to diminish expectation that there would be federal charges. That will go to the legal points of what the burden is on bringing kricbring ing civil rights charge. He wanted to avoid a clash with states over the stand your ground clause, he made it very clear as a former law professor, he thought it was unjust to expand this concept of selfdefense as it was used in the zimmerman case. I want to get your thoughts of the passing of helen thomas, true pioneer. You shared the front row there at the white house. What are your thoughts . I was intimidated when i first met her. I was able to learn from her and recognize what a pioneer she had always been. She was at a stage in her career where she was more opinionated, more openly so, with her columns and so she had taken a bit of a turn in terms of her role in the press corps. But she always taught us it was so important to challenge, ask tough questions of anyone in power and to not let up when youre in that press corps. Good to see you. Well see you on meet the press a little bit later. Helen thomas was a legend in this business and fellow journalists are remembering her fondly today. Andrea mitchell has a look back at her life and her legacy. What is our policy . For more than half a century, she was the first lady of the White House Press corps, covering ten president s, making history herself, born of lebanese immigrant parents, she landed a job with united press international, pioneer woman in a mans profession, not afraid to ask tough questions. Closing press conferences with her trademark, thank you, mr. President. I saw that kennedy was really in a bind, trying to answer questions. And he went on and on trying to find the answer. So then i got up and i said, thank you. He said, thank you. Thank you, helen. I had taken him off the hook. She was named bureau chief. First time in history that a woman has been selected for that high post. We congratulate you. I know nancy upstairs would die, shes watching upstairs on television, if i didnt call on you in that pretty red dress. Your decision to go to war has caused the death of thousands of americans. To assume i wanted war is flat wrong, helen, in all due respect. No longer in daily criticism, she drew criticism for taking sides on the Israeli Palestinian conflict. By then she was already a legend. What do you want to have said about you in your time covering the white house . That she asks good questions. That she asked why. Nbc news, andrea mitchell, washington. Lets get to more news, including that very disturbing case in cleveland. Investigating a possible serial killer. And jenna wolfe has more. You are correct. Remember the big fight 2010 kobe bryant and his mom . She wanted to auction off his stuff. He went to court to stop her. Im sure this happens all the time in your house with all the volleyball trophies. The two settled on allowing the parents to sell six items. They raked in over 400,000 items saturday, auctioning off several Championship Rings and high school jersey. Some money went to charity. The rest of it went right to the parents. While it is understandable that kobe would be upset about this i would be, too. Youre fighting with your mom. Thats your personal stuff. My mom got rid of my michael j. Fox collection. No one bought it. Just know kobe will rake in 30 million. So if he wants it, he can go back and buy it. By his definition, he has yet to do the one thing since he came back from the scandal that means the most to him. Behavior that exposed the former golden boy as a serial cheater. Woods saw his wife walk, his sponsors drop him and his popularity and golf game plunge. This year, he has roared back, announcing he is dating olympic ski champion lindsey vonn, who has taken to twitter and instagram in support of her new flame. He hasnt been able to capture success in major championships, which leads some to wonder has he really recovered .
