trayvon martin's parents reacting to the verdict and what is their next move? we'll ask their attorney, benjamin crump, in a live interview "today," sunday, july 14, 2013. good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on this busy sunday morning. i'm lester holt. >> and i'm kate snow alongside jenna wolfe and diylan dreyer. erica hill has the morning off. the verdict was read just after 10:00 p.m. eastern time last night. this case has captivated people across the kcountry. as you can imagine there was emotional reaction to the jury's decision both outside the courthouse and all across the country as well as on social media which just lit up with responses both for and against the verdict. we will have complete coverage in just a moment. also, sad news this morning ought of the entertainment world. actor cory monteith, beth known for his role of finn be on "glee" has died. his body was found in a vancouver hotel room late saturday morning. no indications of foul play at this point. we'll have much more on his passing coming up. we do want to begin this morning with the george zimmerman trial and his acquittal on second-degree murder and manslaughter charges. two reports from sanford, florida, are reaction from trayvon martin's parents from their attorney, benjamin crump, and analysis from legal analyst lisa bloom. let's get started with kerry sanders. he was inside the courtroom when the verdict was read. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lester, the jurors did not look at juror are juror. then as they sat down and the verdict was read, again, not one of the jurors even glanced at the 29-year-old who they found not guilty. george zimmerman stood as the clerk of the court read the jury's verdict. >> we, the jury, find george zimmerman not guilty. >> reporter: as is custom, they were poll, not guilty was a unanimous decision. >> had is your verdict? >> yes. >> juror e-6 is this your verdict? >> yes. >> juror e-40 is this your verdict? >> yes. >> reporter: moments after george zimmerman left the courtroom a deputy removed an ankle monitor that he had worn for one year and eight days. as zimmerman's family left the courtroom in tears, his father said, our whole familiy is relieved. >> now that the jury decided he acted properly in self-defense, maybe we can give him a little bit of that understanding as well as he needs to get on with his life after having suffered several traumas. >> i'm thrilled that this jury kept this tragedy from becoming a travesty. lrp lead prosecutor ricardo rincon said this is only the second of more than 80 murder trials where he's failed to secure a conviction. >> am i disappointed, yes? i thought he was guilty. what matters is what the jury said and i accept it. >> reporter: he could not hide his frustration. >> it boils down to you have a 17-year-old kid who is minding his own business wearing a hoodie and gets accosted, gets followed by an individual who wants to be a cop. >> reporter: while trayvon martin's family had been in the courtroom for the entire trial, on saturday when the verdict was read, they were not even in the courthouse. their legal team says trayvon martin's parents are disappointed, but they accept the verdict. >> to everybody that put their hoodies up and to everybody who said i am trayvon, his family expressed their heartfelt gr gratitude. >> on behalf of tracy and sybrina who are heartbroken right now, we ask that you keep them in your prayers. >> reporter: george zimmerman is now free. his legal team says it's unlikely he'll be out in public because he still fears for his safety. lesser? >> kerry sanders, thanks. ron mott was outside the courthouse. >> when the verdict came down, you can imagine there were emotions running high. ron, to you now. good morning. >> reporter: kate, good morning to you. opinions have been sharply divided about this case for a long time, even before last night's verdict, and maybe they're even divided more after this verdict. a lot of people were wondering how this all happened. >> we, the jury, find george zimmerman not guilty. >> reporter: for some in sanford, the verdict is a painful exclamation point of injustice. >> how can you murder an innocent child and sleep at night? how can you? >> reporter: for others like kayla alexander, born and raised here, it signals another chance for sanford, for america really, to move forward. >> the verdict is the verdict and it can't be changed. i think as a community we have to pull closer together and try to make sense of everything. >> reporter: around the country, tv, online, on the street, a similar mix from d.c. to chicago, san francisco, l.a., to countless millions l on media worldwide. evidence of a verdict that mattered a lot to so many but certainly no more than to one. a sanford resident told me the cameras will leave. they, of course, will stay behind to live here. they're hurting but hopeful for healing. kate? benjamin crump is an attorney for trayvon martin's family. mr. crump, thanks for being here. >> good morning. thank you for having me. >> you had suggested trayvon martin's family that they not be in the courtroom for the reading of the verdict. can you tell us where they were, how they learned of the verdict, and what their reaction was? >> yes, we notified them. they were headed home. they agreed it was important for them to be in church this morning. quite simply they are heartbroken, trying to make sense of it all, as many around the country are this morning. they're talking to young people and their families trying to explain to them about the justice system. they had a lot of questions of us about the justice system and the jury and now they are putting their faith on a higher authority. >> let's talk about the justice system. you and i spoke in the days after trayvon martin's death and at the time you were saying we want an arrest. we want this to go before a jury. we want justice. well, all that happened. it went before a jury and they made their choice after 16 hours based on the evidence, based on what they heard, do you think this jury came to a reasonable decision? >> well, they came to their decision, we disagree with it, but we have to accept the rule of law. right now whether we as a country progress or regress is going to depend on what we learned from this tragedy. we take solace in knowing that millions of people, black, white, and hispanic, men, women, and children, especially young people, stood up for trayvon saying you have the right to walk home without being profiled, without being followed, and without having a bullet lodged in your heart. >> ultimately six people had the decision to make but anybody who was watching the coverage heard a lot of legal analysts talk about missteps, missed opportunities by the prosecution. in your opinion, did the prosecution drop the ball on any level? >> well, all lawyers have their different styles and different strategies. i thought their closing summation brought it right back to the heart of the matter when they asked if the situation were reversed and it was trayvon martin who profiled and followed george zimmerman and killed him, what would your verdict be? i still think right when you get to the heart of the matter, that's why so many people are watching this case and that's why so many people are heartbroken this morning. >> will the family of trayvon martin file any kind of civil action, or will anybody else that you are aware of, file a civil action? >> right now they're just trying to make accepts of this, lester. they're not thinking about that. they are trying to deal with the grief of losing their son and then not having his kill er hel accountable and so they're working on their foundation, things they can control to try to preserve the legacy of trayvon benjamin martin. >> benjamin crump, we recognize it was a long night and a long several weeks. we do appreciate it. >> yes, sir. >> we should note we invited george zimmerman's defense team to join us this morning, but they declined our request. for more analysis let's bring in "today" analyst lisa bloom. lisa, good morning. >> good morning. >> you've been following this all along. surprised by this verdict or did you see it coming? >> not surprised at all. i think the only decision that this jury could reach based on the way the case came to them, not the evidence, but the way the case came to them, was a defense verdict. >> you know, i asked mr. crump, were there missteps by the prosecution, they were criticized along the way. was it the way they handled the case or was it simply the evidence that wasn't strong enough? >> i was so surprised by many decisions that were made by the prosecution in had this case. chief among them in closing argument asking questions instead of giving an alternate nar it tirative to the jury, explaining a different story than what the defense was giving. essentially the jury only had one picture at the end of the fight, george zimmerman on the bottom, trayvon martin on the top. the prosecution missed throughout the trial that george zimmerman had said on video that the gun was holstered behind him inside his pants. if so lying on his back it would have been impossible for trayvon martin to see it. throughout the trial they were silent on that point. they mentioned it once only briefly in closing argument. they didn't do a demonstration. they didn't show the video. the prosecution was squeamish on subject of race. they didn't want to talk about race. they didn't want to challenge a defense witness late in the game who was a young woman who had been burglarized by an african-american man. what did that have to do with this case? it wasn't trayvon martin. are we to say that one african american burglar means that all african americans are suspect? in fact, that is what the defense essentially argued in closing argue frlt that trayvon martin was a match to that burglar. in other words, he had the same race as that burglar. in other words, it was apro appropriate to be suspicious of trayvon martin. totally unclhallenged by the prosecution. >> do you suspect, do you anticipate there will be a civil case, and how does that work? >> right. so a civil action has already been filed. now that george zimmerman has been acquitted, of course, he can never be retried for the same charges. but in civil court he no longer has the fifth amendment right against self-incrimination so he can be raequired to testify, he can be required to answer questio questions. we recall the o.j. simpson case where he was acquitted in the criminal case. the civil case he was held liable. >> i may have misheard this in the flurry of news conferences. i thought the i heard mark o'mara say he would go to court and try to get immunity for george zimmerman. is that something possible to get immunity in a civil -- >> i heard that, too. he would not have immunity in a civil case. perhaps when he meant was in another criminal case. the fbi opened an investigation some time ago, that investigation hases been on hold. the fbi could bring civil rights charges if they were different rights charges. we saw that in the rodney king case in the 1990s. if the charges are different, substantively different, they could go forward. >> lisa bloom, thank you very much. appreciate it. >> thank you. and george zimmerman's trial brought the issue of race to the forefront. president obama even weighed in on the case early on. now will he say anything more about this verdict? david gregory is moderator of "meet the press." david, good morning to you. >> good morning, kate. >> so let's start with that question. remind people that when president obama weighed in, he said the words, if it i had a son, he would look like trayvon. do you suspect -- the white house has said they wouldn't say anything until after the trial was over certainly, but do you expect the president to say anything at this point? >> it's possible. i don't know he wants to render judgment on the jury's verdict but there are still outstanding issues, a tremendous feeling of dissatisfaction derived from the outcome of this case. there are still racial attitudes at play, the attitude of gun laws in florida, the concept of self-defense. so i don't think this goes away and remember that the political fresh europe wpressure was a bi this, being charged after a long delay after the incident occurred. the challenge how to extrapolate from this case, a tragic situation with strong views about what actually happened. is there something clear enough for a political case to be made for more attention. >> we talked about the heated debate this prompted over race in this country, what it is like to be an african-american young man in this country. leaders expressed disappointment with the case. how do you see that playing out? >> again, i think president obama at that level has been careful about where and when he weighs in but he did in this case, he did in that case in cambridge with skip casing arrested, but he's done so gingerly and i think there's every reason to think that will be the case here as well. i think at the state level there's issues like the stand your ground law that could be debated in various states. i don't think it's totally clear how much traction this has as a political issue. >> this is being watched overseas as well as in the u.s. does it say anything about our legal system? >> i think what it says is that how often our legal system particular particularly in high-profile cases can fail to resolve issues as difficult as this. you know, this was a case whether he committed murder. of not whether a tragedy occurred. not whether a young african-american boy died but whether you could make it a murder charge that would actually stick. so that's why as you've been talking about with lisa, the legal execution becomes a big part of the debate as it's been in other high-profile cases. >> david gregory, we'll check back with you for a preview of what's coming up on "meet the press." meantime, sad news in the entertainment world with the death of cory recently checked himself into a rehab center. police say there were no immediate signs of foul play when he was found. an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow. and we will have much more on this in our next half hour. an update now on that 6-year-old boy rescued from a si sinkhole in lake michigan. he's holding on in critical condition. he was buried friday when 11 feet of sand suddenly collapsed on top of him. wildfire evacuees are going home today, ten days after being forced out of their homes in the mountains near las vegas. firefighters now have the blaze 60% contained. the fire has burned 44 square miles and at times could be seen from las vegas, which is 25 miles away. a huge comeback for struggling san francisco giants pitcher tim lincecum. he threw his first career no-hitter last night to beat the padres 9-0. why are the trophies sports guys win so delicate? teenage boy was killed at a party near mirthy drive and white road. police rushed to the scene around 1:00. at the scene, officers pulled over a car believed to be connected to the gunfire and found the teenager inside. the victim was taken to the hospital where he died. police have not arrested a suspect or released a motive for the killing. it was the city's 28th homicide of the year, the third in six days. >> a developing story, hundreds of protesters furious over the not guilty verdict in the george zimmerman trial, said they'll take to the streets once again today. last night, about 100 people marched through oakland, breaking windows, vandalizing cars and spray painting buildings. some even lit flags on fire and set fires in the street. this is video from the crowd from our nbc chopper. the protest was organized over twitter by occupy oakland. police dressed in riot gear kept a close eye, but this morning, no words of arrests. across the bay, some 200 peach marched down mission bay. people held signs reading things like "the whole system is racist" and "guilty." >> verdict, we the jury find george zimmerman not guilty. >> the six-woman jury deliberated a total of 16 hours. zimmerman claimed he shot and killed 17-year-old trayvon martin in february of last year in an act of self defense during a confrontation in sanford, florida. the prosecution claims zimmerman is a cop wanna be who followed martin and shot him because he wanted to. that's their quote. the prosecution and defense legal teams spoke after the verdict. >> am i disappointed, yes, because i thought he was guilty. what matters is what the jury says, and i accept it. >> obviously, we are ecstatic with the results. george zimmerman was never guilty of anything except protecting himself in self defense. i'm glad that the jury saw it that way. >> trayvon martin's parents who had been in the courtroom for most of the trial, were not in court for the verdict. they have asked for their with "glee" star cory monteith. cory monteith shot to stardom playing the jock turned singer on the hit tv show "glee." starring along side his real life girlfriend, actress lea michelle. >> i have something to say. something happened to me. and i can't really get into it. >> and today his many fans are mourning the death of the 31-year-old actor. police say his body was found saturday in his hotel room in downtown vancouver. they've not given a cause of death and say there's no sign of foul play. the native of british colombia had been open about previous battles with substance abuse and saying he was "lucky to be alife" and according to representatives checked himself into a program for substance addiction in march. an autopsy is planned for monday, today his friends and fans are remembering the talented young actor. the producer of "glee" which is about to enter its fifth season released a statement saying in part "cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person. he was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. ♪ try to make his way home >> alicia corals a correspondent for e. what more do we know about this? >> we don't know a lot right now. the autopsy is going to be on monday. cory had substance abuse problems and we don't know if this is an overdose. we'll have to see. he was found in his hotel room at noon yesterday. he was suppose today check out. when he didn't check out, the staff went in and found his body. and he was seen with people earlier in the day, but this is a shocker. >> no sign of any foul play. >> no. >> at this point. and we don't know if it's linked to his addiction, but he has been very vocal about that, open about it. >> absolutely. he said from the age of 13 he took any and everything. so from alcohol to pills. at 19 his family had an intervention and he entered rehab for the first time. and then he was back in rehab just a few months ago. he got out, we interviewed him, he seemed well. seemed life was going good. his girlfriend was wearing a necklace that said cory. >> that's also his co-star. have we heard anything about her whereabouts? >> we have not. i've interviewed her several times and she talks about cory and her eyes light up. so she's got to be just devastated. they took vacation not that long ago. i'm sure the cast and leah's in shock. >> the show's got to be devastated by this. what do they do? hate to ask, but they're going into a big season this fall. how are they going to cope with the loss of their star? >> that's the big question. the show's creator is going to have a lot to deal with. the cast was just together doing photos for season five for pro moes coming up. cory had so much to look forward to. this is a surprise. >> you know, again, we don't know the cause of death or exactly what happened here, but a lot of people's minds go to that same place. we've seen this before. we saw heath ledger. how many stars who have struggled with substance abuse are found under similar circumstances. >> so many. go from heath ledger to river phoenix. and these are young talents that are gone too soon. and in cory monteith's case, he says i have these addiction issues, but celebrities they've got to be up all the time, on all the time. things are accessible to them. so their battle's even harder than a lot of other people. >> alicia, lot of humidity. and tomorrow it gets even hotter. the start of another heat wave in the northeast. hot across most of the country except back into parts of texas and oklahoma where it's going to be about 20 degrees below normal. we could end up over the next 48 hours in areas like abilene, texas, with about five inches of rainfall. scattered showers and storms all through the gulf coast states about last week. an american woman and her 6-year-old daughter, they're back home in the u.s. after being stuck in brazil for nearly two months caught up in a custody battle with the girl's brazilian father. michelle franzen has their story. >> reporter: a big welcome home for shauna hadden and daughter ava, back in the u.s. after being stranded in brazil for nearly two months fighting an international custody dispute. until a judge ruled earlier this week that mom and daughter were free to leave. >> i was so nervous that i was going to be there forever and i was going to lose my job, i was going to lose my education. >> reporter: the massachusetts mother and daughter traveled to brazil in may for a planned visit with the girl's father, the first visit in nearly four years. >> i crossed all my ts and dolted all my is and still it happened. which it's still a little bit of a shock to me. >> reporter: despite having full custody herself, hadden said it wasn't until she landed in brazil that she learned ava's father was also now seeking custody. >> that's when he said to me you're in my place now. things are going to change. it's my way now. >> reporter: when staying with friends, hadden says brazilian authorities acting on a judge's orders came and seized the mother and daughter's passports. >> they demanded i get my passports immediately and hand it over. >> reporter: but hadden went public with her fight creating a facebook page and seeking advice from david goldman, the new jersey father who battled brazilian courts to bring his own son back to the u.s. >> with the world coming to be such a global community with international relationships and marriages, we really all need to be very mindful when traveling with children outside of our own country. >> reporter: nbc news reached out to attorneys representing ava's father but have not yet received any response. now, back at home hadden says she's just grateful the long ordeal is finally over. >> that ask them questions. pro fab, they'll take knew a clinical east behind the stands somewhere. parents at a youth game don't have much of an option. >> i have three sons and we don't have a doctor on the sideline, so parents and coaches have to make that judgment, has the child had a concussion? if they're knocked out, that's always a concussion. if they look dizzy, is that a concussion or not? this app can help. >> demonstrate this app. this is something a coach or parent can use on the sideline. >> right. and it's also other apps, other programs, other things. i'm going to play a role here. go back 25 years and pretend i'm in high school football. it's preseason. we will take a certain test and have a baseline score. games are on. you might think i have a concussion. pull me to the sideline, take this test. we have a baseline score here of 40 seconds. we start the test. the first one is just a demonstration card so we'll skip that and so now i'm asked to read these numbers left to right. the first one is the easiest. we have these horizontal cues. and then we get to the next test which is a little trickier. now the lines are not there so you can imagine if you have double vision or problems concentration. >> if i took a big hit to the head this might be difficult. >> absolutely. and it gets harder. the third test, so you have to have good vision, good concentration and be able to speak all of the things that help us discern. >> if a kid can't do that you're taking him to the hospital? >> listen, son, we let you play but you agreed we would give you these concussion tests. >> so you at least can get medical follow-up. it may not be a big dael or it may be. >> it can help you at the sidelin sidelines. >> talk about that decision making right now for parents whose kids are playing youth sports. what things do we need to know about the risks of head injuries? >> well, sports have tremendous value. i'm a sports fan. i think parents would only pause something that could cause a lifelong intellectual disability. that is the risk with repeat head injuries and not just repeat head injuries, second hits. so anytime a kid plays sports and you think they have a concussion, please do not put them back in the game and have them see a doctor. i have three sons. they all want to play football. we're going to wait until age 4 14. this is a personal philosophy. the neck is more robust. they are getting skills in flag football. when they do play, we will be at the sidelines. they are going to take their hits but we're not going to let them get that second hit. >> what's the name of the app?
