Foxboro 14 inches, new york 10 inches, boston 7 inches so far and heres the spin, you can still see weve got more snow coming in. Were going to be looking at another three to five inches for the eastern half of massachusetts into hartford, connecticut, bridgeport, connecticut, one to three more in new york city. In just three hours time we expect an announcement on when the conclave, the papal election, will start. Cardinals are currently voting in a building just to my right here. Beneath it you can see the entrance where they have been coming and going, the Side Entrance to the vatican. We expect an announcement shortly after they emerge from there in a few hours time. They are already preparing in the Sistine Chapel. Im told theyre even preparing to block cell phones around the Sistine Chapel where the voting for the conclave will take place to ensure there are no leaks. Another sign that we are moving forward, the papal vestments have been moved to the vatican in three different sizes to fit whoever gets in the end twothirds of the vote and becomes the pope. But were told by a vatty can spokesman, a hint that it might be beginning early next week. The vatican spokesman joking it could be monday or tuesday, or wednesday, or thursday. We saw some of the preparations under way right now. Is there any logistical impediment for them starting say as soon as tomorrow if they wanted . No. If they wanted to they could start as soon as they wanted to, once they voted on it. However, not in terms of logistics, basically the plan has been give them a lot of time to talk now because once the actual conclave starts, that means the voting begins. So right now its time for them to get to know each other. More than 100 cardinals have spoken up until now, which is quite indicative. You have just over 150 in there among the electors and those over 80. So the fact of the matter is, a great number have spoken, but also in the time these meetings and also the time between these meetings, theres time for them to get to know each other. This weekend also, the cardinals have their own sort of what are known as churches, each has his own church in rome. Theyll probably be headed there to pray, also part of the process. I know campaigning and lobbying is not part of the process, but during these meetings theyve had this week, is there at least a chance to get a measure of each man . Well, there certainly is. You know, the cardinals, many of them dont know each other. They dont meet all that often, to tell you the truth. They do know each other, the ones from the same continent, often from the same language groups. Its like you may know another reporter, but youve never met him or her. You run across them on a story and suddenly you sit down and have a cup of coffee, that certainly happens. They get to know each other. That campaign was launched earlier this week in new york city and critics are already lining up, saying it unnecessarily targets Young Mothers and their babies. Its an antiteen pregnancy message right from the mouths of babes. Ads, featuring toddlers saying things like dad, youll be paying to support me for the next 20 years. Honestly mom, chances are he wont stay with you and one toddler in tears proclaims im twice as likely not to graduate high school because you had me as a teen. New york city is now unveiling the ads as part of their new antiteen pregnancy campaign. Roughly 4,000 posters are going up all over the city. Its a strong, pretty intense poster. I wouldnt call it exactly offensive, but i dont know if its necessary. Its brutally honest and thats what some people need. Its a wakeup call. Reporter new york city already requires sex ed and provides emergency contraception in some schools. This is the citys latest crusade since its ugh obese sbit smoking campaign. I chose to smoke and then this is what this decision cost me. We want to make it clear to teenagers that there are significant responsibilities and burdens that come with parenthood and teenagers need to hear these strong messages. Reporter some are crying foul over these babies, saying they unfairly stigmatize teen parents and their children. A mentoring program for teen moms gave birth to her son when she was just 19 years old. I believe the citys new campaign is negative toward teen moms and it perpetuates a stereotype that teen moms are not successful when, really, thats knotted tnot the case an teen moms defy the odds. Reporter they do work, after milwaukee started using strong ads their teen rate dropped. Its decreased nearly 35 since the inception of this campaign in 2006. Reporter new york hopes to see same results, using little messengers to address a big problem. Ads also include a number that the teens can text to get more information about unplanned pregnancies. More than a week after his resignation became official, there are still a lot of controversial theories about why Pope Benedict xvi stepped down. Nbcs chief correspondent Richard Engel is looking into them at the vatican. Richard, good morning. Reporter good morning, lester. Just the first bit of news today. Vatican spokesperson said we should know the date of the start of the conclave some time this afternoon, rome time. Thats the process by which the cardinals will elect a new pope. But what we still dont know, not definitively anyway, is why Pope Benedict decided to retire. And the main theory is that it wasnt just because of his age and health, but that he became aware of a number of controversies among the vaticans top leadership, first exposed by an italian investigative journalist. Are you the man who brought down the pope . Translator no. How can you think a journalist can bring down a pope . Reporter but many believe thats exactly what happened. This journalist exposed some of the vaticans most guarded secrets. A scoop seen in italy as big as watergate. Italians call it vatileaks. The popes butler passed about 100 pages of documents he photocopied and smuggled out of the popes own apartment to this journalist, now an nbc consultant. It was a cloak and dagger operation, with meetings between he and the butler in public squares, conversations only by oldfashioned public telephones. The butlers leaked documents revealed problems in the vatican bank, and allegations of a twisted web involving money, power and sex. He says the butler thought he was trying to help the pope. The butler described himself as an infiltrator for the holy spirit in the vatican n a sense, i think he thought he was making history. And i think, as things turned out, he really did. Reporter the vatican bank has denied allegations of corruption, but several vatican experts have a theory, that the pope resigned not only for health reasons, but also because he didnt have the strength to deal with the scandals inside the vatican. Experts told us his resignation was an act of sacrifice, to save the Catholic Church. My view is that it was a very courageous act, actually. And perhaps at the end of the day it will be seen as the defining moment of his papacy and his real legacy. Reporter so the only way for him to bring down those around him was to fall on his own sword . I think thats right. This was not just his resignation. It was a way of firing everybody. Reporter the pope sealed the 300page report on the vatileaks schedule, saying it can only be read by his successor. Its contents may be the one vatican secret that will never be revealed. The more i wrote about ronan, the more i understood that the only way grief would not take me down completely was to greet his diagnosis head on and make my world big, make his story known. We lifted ronan from his crib and kissed him. There was joy. We laughed. We lived. I took him hiking and rubbed his fat feet in the dirt and lifted his face to the juniperscented breeze. He went on road trips, parties, coffee shops. He was our xcompanion, our chil, our beloved. After ronans diagnosis i often stood over him, sleeping in his crib and wriished i could lie nt to him, press him to me, untangle his dna, restitch it, rebraid it, fix it, make it right, take it back somehow, change the odds. I marvelled at how beautiful he was, how wonderfully made and yet from the moment of his birth and even before, it had been chipping away at him. Emily rapp joins us now. Good morning. Good morning. Im so sorry, you lost your son. Its hard for me to even think about this, but you lost your son three weeks ago. How are you doing . Okay. You and your husband are okay . Ronan was very ill and at some point when youre that sick, its better to be in another place. So im happy that hes released from his body but, of course, i miss him. You had three years with a beautiful little angel. Beautiful. And the message that we read in your blogs that are, by the way, on our website at today. Com and also in this beautiful book still point of the turning world is wonderful. Its really about embracing every moment and living with that joy. Thats right. And living as a parent, embracing your children every day. Yes. I think its really important. The message that i want the book to convey is that we should love our children for who they are in the moment right now, no matter what they become or what they achieve and that thats an incredibly Important Message to send to parents of healthy children or terminally ill children. Its sort of the truth of ronans life. You write ronan was ronan. He was never just a sick baby. My life as his mother was more tan just managing the illness and the many difficulties it presented. Explain how you got through daytoday. I got through ronans illness and his death by writing this book, which saved me in every way, and by reaching out to other people so that people in the national organization, my Amazing Group of friends, my family. Everyone sort of surrounded me and supported me. I did not feel isolated at any time during this journey. You call the mothers and other parents who have been through this, who have also experienced loss dragons. Dragon moms. Dragon moms. What do you mean by that . I like the image because a dr dragon is medieval, rare, inconvenient. And its a very rare illness and also a medieval illness. Were big and unwieldy and are loud and have fiery magic and all of those things. You describe what rick went through as well. He fathered ronan beautifully, attentively, lovingly. His parenting approach was patient, soft but intense, earnest and honest and above l all, vigilant. Yes. Rick was a beautiful father to r ronan. Any kind of diagnosis like this, you can imagine, is delvastatin to individuals and couples. He was an amazing father. And you write for today. Com and you advise all parents, a child is a person, not a project. Enjoy your time now. Rest and relax. Try to stay in the moment before its gone. Ease up. Take it easy and responses from our today moms community, for the most part they dont even know how you can be so strong in this moment right now but really taking a look at and embracing exactly that sentiment, one mother even saying after a very long morning of toddler tantrums that have stretched my nerves to the breaking point, i think i was meant to read this. Thank you. What do you want to say to parents out there . That woman said it perfectly. Being a parent is really difficult, but i think the message that the things that ronan taught me about staying in the moment which is really difficult to do, are lessons that can be applied to anybody, not just with your children, but the people that you love, just trying to be present with them.
