I always cringe when i watch, like, a heavy set female comedian make fat jokes. I dont know why. I know that its theres something about it that just makes me kind of cringe a little. I feel like the way he handled it on this show was great. I mean, i thought he really handled it. People in your life that have been teased and have had painful experiences, so youre sensitive to it. I think anyone who has ever been friends or known or been with someone thats overweight gets the feeling, or if youve been there yourself and i have been there, too, and you think is that a funny thing . Eventually when you write a number of a books in the series she suddenly sprang to life, and you eventually know what shes going to say and do and all of that. How does the writing process work with you two . Who does what . Very much together. We write every line together but we finish each others sentences. Sorry about that. Thats okay. Its very organic. Some writing partners take a chapter each or, you know it needs to have a singular voice through it. In other words, you got to start together and finish together. You know exactly otherwise its two voices making the one character. We have different strengths. Lets discuss those. In writing. Whats your mothers strength . Shes great about the big idea. She has these wonderful sweeps of imagination. Big picture. Shes great. All over the entrances and the exits. And what about you . What would you say is emmas strength . Shes all the nuts and bolts. Shes the big ark. The first act and the second act. Mom weve got to go here and do this here. Its more of a director thing, right . Yeah. I guess so. An editing thing. By far the better writer. Tremendous writer. Oh really . Well, in this book the character faces a little problem when she loses something that she needs so bad, and a lot of kids run into these kind of things. It was beautiful how it was dealt with, too, in the book. She thinks shes a fairy but shes far from perfect. Shes not at all what a princess should be. Her socks are about her ankles. Its more about sparkle and individuality and letting that come forward and celebrating it. Exactly. You know, when she forgets her valentines, and she has to somehow save the day, she tells each of her friends what she loves about them best. Thats a great lesson for grownups, too. Theres a reason theres 27 of them. You know, she says i like you you sparkle because or when. Youre going to do a little sparkle now with christmas coming up. Well have another one.
