and quiet time. the silent movie "the artist" makes a big noise at the golden globes with its three wins. all eyes were on ricky gervais after his controversial isn't as host last year. >> where was i? nervous? don't be. this isn't about you. right. hello. >> how did he do and how did everyone look on the red carpet? we are live in los angeles with complete coverage today, monday, january 16th, 2012. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is a special edition of "today at the golden globes." with matt lauer and ann curry. live from los angeles. >> and welcome to a special edition of "today." we've got our dance music on. still dancing all night. i'm natalie morales along with savannah guthrie and al roker. matt and ann have the day off. you guys had a good night, right? >> what a night. good morning. the golden globe for biggest party animal goes to al roker. >> i got about 45 minutes of sleep. >> and you got two hours. i think i got three. i think i was the good girl. >> we want to apologize right now for anything that goes wrong in the show. it was such a good night. some of hollywood's biggest names were out including walking away with awards meryl streep, george clooney, madonna and martin scorsese. could it be a preview of what's to come at the oscars? we're going to break down the winners just ahead. of course, as you know, we can't talk about awards show without taking a look at red carpet. who rocked it? who did not make the cut? there's certainly a lot of standout looks. angelina jolie, reese witherspoon among them. gorgeous. >> so which outfits worked? which ones missed the mark? we're going to get into that as well. both for the men and the women. >> all right. but we're going to begin with the winners on stage at the 69th annual golden globe awards. >> reporter: from scorsese to spielberg, streep to the sigh lent era, it was a night that saw hollywood honor its past while celebrating legends who are still creating some of their best work. "the artist" set before talking movies began took best picture for musical or comedy along with best actor for the star, dejardins. >> you were told you could not be an actor because your face was too expressive? >> the camera don't like that, don't like your mouth, your nose. that's my face. i don't understand. >> so something with the eyebrows. >> that's true. they're very indifferent. >> they are very expressive. >> yes. >> are they excited that you won the golden globe? >> yeah. >> reporter: best drama went to "the descendants" and best actor in that category to its star, george clooney. >> and especially thank you very much to alexander payne who makes wonderful films and is a great friend. >> reporter: the great christopher plummer has been in more than 100 films. but until his supporting actor role in "beginners," he had never won a golden globe. how does it feel at 82 years old to be collecting all of these accolades? >> they're a little hard to lift. >> reporter: the two top actress awards went to stars playing real-life stars, meryl streep as margaret thatcher and michelle williams for the title role in "my week with marilyn." i heard you even had to learn how to wig. . wiggle. >> it's not a swing. is it a figure 8? is it an undulation? it's all kinds of things. >> reporter: it's never a surprise when meryl streep wins, but somehow she makes it memorable every time. >> oh [ bleep ]. oh, i'm going to have to remember my speech. >> reporter: so you just abandoned the speech? >> i hadn't -- yeah. and i had everybody's names. all of these incredible actresses. >> reporter: but instead the "f" word came out. >> yeah. >> reporter: what happened? >> i forgot my glasses. >> reporter: cable shows once again dominated television category. showtime's "homeland" won best dramatic series along with lead actress claire danes. president obama is said to love this show. >> that's like the biggest accolade. >> it makes me feel a little weird that the president's seen me naked. other than that i'm good. >> reporter: martin scorsese took best director for "hugo" while steven spielberg's "the adventures of tin tin" won for best animated feature. your golden globe without asking. that probably violates golden globe etiquette. >> i don't think so. here. why don't you hold it the whole interview. >> i don't think i could. >> it matches your dress. >> reporter: perhaps no one enjoyed the evening more than octavius spencer who won for "the help." >> words can't describe how overjoyed i am and the fact that it's happening on dr. king's holiday feels like the perfect bow. >> congratulations. and here you are on "today" where you belong. >> let's see what's happening in your neck of the woods. >> well done. al, you have some competition. we'll have much more on the golden globes throughout the morning. including a live interview with the man behind "the artist" and the red carpet fashions. for now here's natalie. thank you. now to italy and the investigation into that deadly cruise ship disaster. a sixth body was found in the wreckage overnight as new details emerged about what may have been critical errors by the ship's captain. nbc's michelle kosinski is in italy. michelle, good morning. >> reporter: hi, natalie. from the beginning, questions surrounded the captain. he was arrested, under investigation. well, now his employer says he made an unauthorized deviation in the ship's course, bringing it too close to shore, then made mistakes handled it. and now investigators say he himself was on shore while passengers were still scrambling to get off that ship. this was friday night. the latest rescue from on board was yesterday. the pictures emerging from the ship. screams. and just after passengers experienced a loud rumble, shake, then tilting but had a very reassuring announcement. >> the situation is under control. >> reporter: the calm lasted about as long as the life vests. >> people were passing out. people were getting nervous. people were having chest pains. i was having chest pains. i was having anxiety because i don't know how to swim. >> reporter: panicked passengers separate for escape. some fought for lifeboats. >> we were dangling above the water with the lifeboat probably for about another hour before they even released us. >> reporter: one to two hours on a swiftly sinking ship. >> when we actually got into the water, we couldn't get away from the ship because it kept towing in. >> reporter: many finally just jumped. into the cold black water. >> they were saying that it was just an electrical problem, but it wasn't. we saw the big rock outside. >> reporter: the rock that ripped a 160-foot gash in the hull. at least five people have died. more are missing. including we now know two americans. and now the company owned by carnival reveals in a statement there may have been significant human error. the vessel appears to have been too close to shore. the captain appears not to have followed standard costa procedures. but he says navigation systems showed the way was clear. he was arrested for questioning under suspicion of manslaughter and abandoning ship. days after the disaster, rescuers keep looking. this man, was found on board yesterday afternoon. this honeymooning couple saturday night. but searchers also found the bodies of two elderly men. 120 americans were on board. families from all over the country headed home with some awful memories. they never dreamed possible. >> it was virtually a scene from the "titanic." it was very -- it felt like we were doing the actual scene. it was surreal. >> reporter: these are live pictures now from the scene. overnight rescuers pulled the body of a sixth victim from on board. but this morning they've had to suspend their operations because that ship is still sinking. conditions are just too dangerous. those two americans who are still missing have been identified by their local paper as gerald and barbara heil from minnesota. natalie? >> all right, michelle kosinski, seeing those pictures there, it's just unbelievable. thank you. the family was among the last to leave the ship as it lay on its side, and they just got back among the last to leave and they just got back to the u.s. good morning to you all. >> good morning. >> how are you all holding up? you just got home last night. >> just been home a few hours. i think we're doing as best as we can at this point. >> we just feel blessed to be alive. >> you certainly are cindy, describe the moment when the ship hit the rock. >> we were sitting in the dining room, just eating our family meal and all of the sudden, everything just started shaking and a people were running and there was just a blackout. we just didn't know where to go. >> valerie, you described this experience as being pretty much like exactly what happened with the "titanic." describe the chaos on board. what were they telling you to do? >> it was very sad. the chaos was something that you see in the movie "titanic." there was no direction by any of the crew. a lot of the passengers were panicking rather than trying to stay calm and think things through. people were falling, things were flying. it was just a very -- >> how would you -- i'm sorry. we have a little bit of a delay here. georgia, let me ask you. in a statement the cruise company say in handling the emergency the captain appears not to have followed standard procedures but it is becoming clear that the crew acted bravely and swiftly to help evacuate more than 4,000 individuals during a challenging situation. georgia, in your experience how were the crew members handling this emergency? >> first of all, i have been on over 75 cruises. i have a lot of experience. there was absolutely no leadership provided. there was no direction. there were no officers available. everybody was one man for themselves in this. the only way people got off the ship was not with the help of the personnel. you did not see one officer there. people did not know how to do anything. it was very disorganized and there was no help. you were on your own. >> georgia, i know you describe an encounter you had with a young couple from argentina with a baby. they asked for your help with their baby. can you tell me what happened? >> yes. we were trying to get to a banister to get as high as we could. we had first been in a lifeboat they didn't know how to get started and they couldn't function well with it, so we had to get out of it. as we got out, this family we had been in the lifeboat with came up and they tried to get up to the banister where we were, where we thought we were safe and they turned to me and said, take my baby and they gave me their 2-year-old and i held onto the baby as long as i could, but we were at the top of a stairwell and i was holding on with one hand and i was afraid that the baby -- because the ship kept going back and sinking hr and i was afraid i would lose balance and the baby would fall down the banister. >> do you know what happened with the couple or the -- >> no. i would love to know if they survived. there were a lot of people -- >> dean, i know you were, in fact, one of the last to get on a lifeboat. can you tell me how you finally got out? >> i never got on a lifeboat. yeah, we got a lifeboat but we had to climb up. when the ship turned over completely 90 degrees we were actually walking on the outside walls. >> you were walking on the very outer perimeter of the ship? is that right? on top of the ship? >> yes. on top of the ship because we were all down below on the interior passageway. a ladder came down and we all climbed up the ladder, hundreds of us. >> how long then before -- from the moment the boat started to list to when you were able to get off the boat, how long did that rescue then take? >> we were on the boat between 9:15 and 9:30 in the mediterranean. we didn't get off until 2:30 in the morning at that time. >> wow. >> there was only two crew members behind me. we had to get up actually on the outside of the ship. we walked along where the windows were. i don't know what deck it is. there was an open deck area. with help from others, some german nationals and an austrian national which actually put their lives on the line, helping us pull passengers up. we had to crawl along and there were license left from the boats that were guidelines. they eventually cinched them off down where the last boat was coming around. we shimmied down those ropes and had to jump into the lifeboat. that was not far from where the damage was from the rocks. >> what a harrowing experience you have all been through. george, dean, valerie, cindy. we are glad you're safe and sound and back home once again. >> thank you. >> thank you so much. >> now here's savannah. >> now to presidential politics and another shake-up to the republican field. jon huntsman is quitting the race just five days before south carolina's primary. peter alexander is in charleston, south carolina, this morning with the details. peter, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. and then there were five. governor jon huntsman will make official today the announcement he's coming out of the race at 11:00. one adviser says huntsman's concern was that his path going forward would only take votes from governor mitt romney saying he was not one to stand in the way of a candidate best able to beat barack obama. just hours after winning the endorsement of south carolina's largest newspaper, former utah governor jon huntsman told advisers he's dropping out of the race. short on cash and struggling to revive the campaign after a third place finish in new hampshire he's expected to endorse mitt romney today. barely a week ago he got into this exchange with mitt romney. >> this nation is divided because of attitudes like that. >> reporter: south carolina may also be the last stand for romney's remaining republican rivals who this weekend courted the large block of social conservatives. >> we are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights. >> who will be faithful to your values?
