Is it a harmless photo or a tone deaf response to racial tension . The San Francisco Police Officers association is facing some criticism over this ad which was placed in its union newsletter. Pictures like this one have been circulating on social media for a while. But when it appeared in the Police Officers association journal, some believed it was simply out of line. It shows a black labrador dog with a sign that reads black labs matter next to a yellow dog with a sign reading all labs matter. Dont play with this. Because you know, lives are being ruined, lives are being taken and families are mourning still. Next to the picture in that newsletter, there was a call to tone down the rhetoric. The Police Officers association declined to comment today. Whenever i see a stolen gun, i see a future robbery. I see a future homicide. I see a future assault. Tens of thousands of lost and stolen guns. Tonight we track thousands of those very same guns to the crimes where they were later used. Im stephen stock. Coming up, our exclusive and unprecedented investigation into exactly what happens to guns after they are stolen from lawabiding citizens. Nbc bay area cheryl hurd traveled to santa rosa where this news is bringing back painful memories, he is not welcome here at all. Reporter Daniel Garcia says he has no words for Law Enforcement official who promoted Sonoma County sheriffs deputy to sergeant. It makes me more sad than mad. Reporter gailhouse was promoted to sergeant in may after being at the center of a swarm of controversy and protests. Sonoma county sheriff supported his move on facebook. Reporter lopezs family attorney is disappointed by the promotion and his friend believes it means lopez is being denied justice. I knew andy. He wasnt a dangerous kid at all. And he just killed him right there. Reporter lopezs family filed a federal lawsuit. They declined to talk to us on camera. In santa rosa sack, cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. Cheryl, thank you. Well, its a growing problem that is also deadly. On the street, criminals consider stolen guns more valuable than gold. In an unprecedented project, weve teamed up with nbc stations throughout california to find out how many stolen guns contribute to other crimes. Its in the thousands. Lets bring in our Senior Investigative reporter stephen stock. Stephen . Reporter we worked more than six months and got records and data no one else has ever obtained. It all shows that lost and stolen guns kill and maim innocent people here in the bay area and around california much more often than you might imagine. As soon as you drive on to her familys Sonoma County farm, the legacy surrounds you. Olga was my sister, but she was my best friend. Reporter from the fruit trees to the rose bushes to the immaculate ground she tended daily. She left her mark. She always had a kind word for everybody. Reporter her death in 2015 carries its own horrible legacy. Police report shows the 84yearold olga was tied up in this chair in her home by two fugitives on the run from the law. Then she was shot to death where she sat. They tied her up with duct tape and they shot her. Reporter using data compiled by a team of nbc investigative reporters located throughout california, we traced three of the guns later found on the suspects in olgas murder to guns that had been stolen from a marin county home. Police say the fugitives later traded a stolen gun for a getaway car. It just happened for no reason. Reporter our investigation found that the use of stolen weapons to commit other crimes happens again and again. Using this unique database, we matched the serial numbers of 4300 stolen and lost guns dating back to 2010 with the serial numbers of guns connected to crimes from the same time period. Crime data obtained from more than 70 california Law Enforcement agencies who responded to our public records request. Whenever i see a stolen gun, i see a future robbery. I see a future homicide. I see a future assault. Reporter we were also able to match 2600 different lost and stolen guns directly connected to crimes later. Thing is even more. Reporter Graham Barlow is resident agent in charge of the federal bureau of tobacco, firearms and explosives sacramento field office. Very often we find people that own firearms are not aware of the serial numbers. Additionally, we know that people sometimes have guns stolen or pilfered from their collection by family members and theyre not even aware its missing. Reporter using this unique data we were able to track at least 35 lost and stolen guns that were later used in homicides or attempted homicides statewide. Those do not include the stolen guns used in four out of five high profile homicides in the bay area last year, including steve carter in marin county and audrey carey in golden gate park. Both killed with the same stolen gun, or kate steinle killed on pier 14 or antonio ramos, both killed with stolen guns from federal Law Enforcement officers. We also found lost or stolen guns were later recovered at 49 different robberies statewide, and more than 40 other shootings. That is thats a very large number. Reporter evan johnson grew up around guns and Gang Violence in sacramento. At about early age, you kind of get used to it. Reporter even as a youngster, johnson says he knew how to buy a gun off the street. Im sure most of them are still there. Reporter after the los angeles area, our analysis showed that many of the guns that are lost and stolen in the state come from the central valley, place likes the sacramento area, around bakersfield, and the stockton area. All higher than areas around the bay area like alameda county, San Francisco, and all of santa clara county. Firearms are of high value to people in the criminal community. Reporter and our trace found several guns appear to have been used two, three times on two, three different crimes. Does that surprise you . Not at all. Not at all, no. Firearms especially we see gangs when they acquire firearms and will pass a gun around among gang members so that it they use it like a community gun. So that its available for more than one person and it also lessens the responsibility on one person if they are caught with it. Kind of like the family is not the same anymore. Reporter larry and anne say their sister died in senseless violence that no amount of data will explain. But they say it doesnt surprise them that the people accused in olgas murder were also caught up in trading and using stolen guns as well. Sure, they can go steal them, but they dont have to go using them. Reporter now this project captures just one snapshot in time. And we want to emphasize that many Law Enforcement agencies around california refuse to cooperate with our project. In fact, experts we talked with estimate that the number of lost and stolen guns later used in crime is six to seven times higher than the data we obtained shows. Now we have a breakdown of all this data, all about guns all over the state. You can find it on our website, nbcbayarea. Com. Click on the special web page, guns in the bay. Guys . [ light laughter ] jimmy i want to show everyone a clip, if you havent seen it. Here is Lorne Michaels describing how working with comedians is like watching monkeys at the zoo. [ light laughter ] this is comedians in cars getting coffee. And then and then before you leave theres the monkeys. Theres something about the joy, the sheer fooling around because it is what comedians do. You know, you cant tell when theyre working. You know what i mean . You cant tell what theyre doing or how theyre working. And its disorganized and chaotic and they are doing it to make each other laugh. Yeah. And they never seem to be settling down and getting work done. No. Theyre talking in the hall about sports. Yeah. And somehow at the end of the week there is a show. Exactly. So you cant run that through a a normal organizational because theyre the monkeys. Yeah, because theyre the monkeys. [ cheers and applause ] jimmy yeah, exactly. Thats the problem. Were the monkeys. [ cheers and applause ] i note the obvious differences in the human family. Some of us are serious, some thrive on comedy. Ive sailed upon the seven seas and stopped in every land, ive seen the wonders of the world not yet one common man. I know ten thousand women called jane and mary jane, ive not seen any two who really were the same. Mirror twins are different although their features jibe, and lovers think quite different thoughts while lying side by side. I note the obvious differences between each sort and type, but we are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. Why be in the kitchen. When you can be in the moment . Olive garden now offers catering delivery. We make the food and deliver it to your door. So you can enjoy whats important. How does oh, screw off. This. To this. [ cheers and applause ] jimmy youre in a great mood tonight. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you, thats wonderful. Jimmy you have a history of following Jerry Seinfeld. I do have a very unfortunate history of follow Jerry Seinfeld. When i was, like, 14 years old, i wanted to be in the just for laughs comedy festival which is in montreal, and to audition for it, i had to fly to los angeles, which is weird because im already canadian, dont ask. I get there, im 14, super nervous and im at a showcase at the improv. Jimmy on melrose . Yeah on melrose, and so im about to go up, and someone tells me seinfelds coming. I was, like, what . Hes coming, and if he gets here before its your time, hes going to go up, and then youll go up. I was, like, no, man [ laughter ] jimmy you cant follow seinfeld. Tell them no. And they were, like, we cant do that. Thats not how it works. And so i literally remember seeing a porsche pull up out front so i was like no. I know him and his porsches. His jewish parents should be ashamed, by the way, but anyway. [ laughter ] so a porsche pulled up, my parents would kill me. And then i see i see him getting out, and he goes up, right before im supposed to, and he, like, annihilates like hes very funny. Hes talking about missing socks, you know, whats the deal with airplane food . Its the hits you know. Jimmy he has all the hits. [ light laughter ] hes the greatest. Yeah, yeah. And he, like, annihilates, and the whole time im just standing there, like, i hate you Jerry Seinfeld. [ light laughter ] how could you do this to me . Jimmy you ruined my whole shot of going to montreal. Exactly and i get up on stage, and i have, like, what is to this date the most comedicly traumatizing experience of my entire life, and i remember, like, microphones give up just an electric hum if you dont hear anything else, its like the sound of a speaker, and i remember being on stage, and to this point i remember the moment, where i was, like, man, i can hear that buzz really loud right now. Jimmy oh no, im so sorry. Never has a room full of people been so silent. [ laughter ] jimmy oh, my god. Yeah, and to this day, i personally dislike Jerry Seinfeld. [ laughter ] jimmy and he did it again tonight. He did it again tonight. Ruining it again jimmy i really had the same thing. Really . Jimmy well, i had to follow jerry at the improv. He came in, i saw the car outside. What is he doing . Jimmy i just i think hes making us tougher. Yeah, i dont know. I think he finds out something cool were about to do and then does it first. [ laughter ] i like, see him leaving my wifes bedroom. [ laughter ] dont bother, pal. [ laughter ] jimmy well i took care of that. [ laughter ] jimmy lets segue into the movie. Thats an organic. [ laughter ] jimmy thank you for the setup, Sausage Party. Im sorry you have to talk about it. I have to apologize, like i talked to the New York Times about it. Im like, you guys should not have to talk about this. I apologize. Jimmy well, ive heard a a lot of things i like about this. Number one is you have been working on this for, like, ten years. Yeah, which is humiliating to say about a talking hot dog movie, but, yes. [ laughter ] a third of my life, ive been working on making this movie. Jimmy you wanted it to be good, and the animation is spectacular, by the way. Thank you so much. We really wanted it to feel like a pixar movie and have the skin and vibe and the overall feeling of a pixar movie, and then we made it completely deranged and insane, and, you know, pixar is so good at examining the secret life of cars and toys and bugs, and were like, well, if you look at the secret life of food, its horrifying because you eat it. And [ laughter ] jimmy yeah. So to us, it was a brilliant movie idea. [ laughter ] jimmy the cast is jonah hill, michael cera, kristen wigg, james franco, paul rudd, Edward Norton, its unbelievable, and the music is by allen menken, whos won oscars. Hes won like eight oscars i think. Jimmy how did you convince him . He did like little mermaid. He did the aladdin and the little mermaid. Jimmy how did you convince him to do Sausage Party . This is fantastic it was great. We offered him money and then he [ laughter ] jimmy oh, okay. I think he probably called the academy to make sure they
