And later a sunday sitdown with Little Big Town. The country whose four part harm mon harmony anies have made them a big success. I was so numb i couldnt even make a step on my own, and i would have breakdowns and they would cover for me or take me out or lay with me on the bed and cry and just encouragement that it was going to get better. Our sunday sitdown with Little Big Town. Plus, harry smith a bit later in the show. Lets begin this morning with the deadly tornadoes in east texas. Nbcs Charles Hadlock is live on the scene in canton, texas. Charles, good morning. Reporter good morning, willie. People in east texas were expecting bad weather yesterday, but nothing like this. This is where one of four tornadoes touched down yesterday destroying homes and businesses including an entire car dealership in canton, texas. Five people dead, more than hundreds others injured. This morning First Responders assessing the damage after a series of powerful tornadoes tore through east texas. Sawed the house off right on top of us. Me and a buddy of mine hid the kids. I dont really remember much except just watching the walls of the house fall off and everything around me being gone. Reporter cars were spun off the highway. This dodge dealership completely destroyed. Were hoping for the best but really expecting the worst. Reporter firefighters raced from house to house to search for victims. Every last one of us walked away, but we have nothing left. There was this loud wind. It got really dark and everything was getting thrown at the house. Reporter the twisters, part of a massive storm system racing across the country this weekend, causing devastating flash flooding for tense of millions. In missouri a state of emergency. At least one person dead, dozens of others picking up the pieces. This is all we have left. We built the house in 2011 and that creek out there was just a peaceful babbling brook. I came over here and the water had receded quite a bit, and i was able to wade through it and get my animals and take them back to the car and take them to my parents house. Reporter First Responders shocked at what they are seeing. Been here 37 years. This is the first time ive seen the water this high. Reporter with the sun coming up, the cleanup begins as this entire storm system moves east. Willie . Just astounding pictures there. Charles hadlock in canton, texas. Tens of millions of people across the country could see more Severe Weather today. Well get dylans forecast in a moment. Meanwhile, this is day 101 of Donald Trumps presidency. On saturday he commemorated the 100 day milestone with a big rally in pennsylvania. Reminiscent of the ones he held as a candidate. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell is live for us this morning at the white house. Kelli, good morning. Good morning, willie. The president made himself an antiwashington outsider telling the pennsylvania crowd he would rather spend time with them over a washington tradition. President trump became the first in decades not to attend the white house Correspondents Dinner. Even ronald regan recovering from a gunshot called into the event. Mr. Trump told that rally crowd about renegotiating nafta, repealing obamacare and building the wall but he spent the most of his time, a block of it knocking the media. Greeting thousands of fired up supporters in harrisburg, pennsylvania, saturday night, President Trump revelled in running another kind of campaign, an attack on the national media. They are gathered together for the white house Correspondents Dinner without the president. Balking decades of president ial tradition dishing out his own 100 day report card. I think we would all agree the media deserves a very, very big fat failing grade. Reporter back in washington the black tie event went on to celebrate the First Amendment and to refute accusations made by the president. We are not fake news and we are not the enemy of the american people. Reporter but the dinner is best known for being funny. The show went on featuring hasan minage. I would say it is fun to be here. That would be an alternative fact. It is not. No one wanted to do this. Reporter usually the president is on stage. Who is tweeting at 3 00 a. M. Sober . Reporter zinging the president , manage said was his free speech. The leader of our country is not here, and thats because he lives in moscow. It is a very long flight. It would be hard for vlad to make t. Vlad cant make it on a saturday, its a saturday. Reporter skipping the dinner extended to all the cabinet and white house members as well. President trump told the rally crowd he might attend the dinner next year. Of course it was his 100th day, and here in washington the peoples climate march brought thousands of demonstrators. They marched from the capitol to the white house, thousands of them outside the gates. They were protesting the president s policies at the same time noting that the epa removed from its government website Climate Change data and other scientific information. It was quite a day, willie. Kelly odonnell, thanks so much. Chuck todd is moderator of meet the press. Good morning. Good morning, william. Lets talk about last night. You had these two competing events on whats traditionally a night of detante. He makes some jokes at his own expense. Donald trump went another direction with it. The press defended his role, defended his first 100 days. He attacked the press. What was his objective last night and did he achieve it . Reporter i think his objective was to fire up the base a little bit and i think the split screen i dont think theres a politician in america that wouldnt have wanted that split screen, willie, where you are seen in the heartland of america talking with constituents up against press in black tie in a ballroom. A politician in that split screen is going to win that short term every time but, look, long term i dont know if this fight with the media is healthy for him. I think whats interesting, willie, if you think about it, up until last night he had actually toned down the media bashing over the last month and i wonder if just last night was just about the dinner and whether hell continue on that toning down as the year wears on. There was some irony in that he was attacking many of the same people last night to whom he gave interviews this week and over the last couple of weeks. Lets talk about his agenda. There was an extraordinary moment in his speech where he singled out two congressmen who said, we better get health care done or im going to be very angry. Hes now had a couple of bites at it. Hasnt gotten anything done. Members of the freedom caucus, republicans believe theyll get something. Where is he looking right now . Where is the white house looking for its first legislative victory . Reporter i think thats the biggest story of the first 100 days. Theyre not on track for a major legislative victory anywhere. No. Reporter could he get something passed out of the house on health care . Maybe. Even if it passes out of the house, its going nowhere as it stands on a repeal and replace bill in the senate. Tax reform looks like theyre not even at the starting blocks. They have the one sheeter out, but they havent even gbegun th process. The reason its the story of the first 100 days, willie, if you look at the past five president s in the modern era, they already had a major legislative achievement by their 100 day mark or they truly were on track within another month or two just after and its not there. Look, the first 100 days politically is usually your best as far as Political Capital is concerned and approval rating. Things are only going to go downhill on that front from here. In that interview i mentioned with reuters this week donald trump said he thought it would be easier, asked to reflect on the first 100 days. I thought the job would be easier than it is. What do you think hes learned, chuck, in 100 days that may signal to you in some ways he might do something differently to get one of those victories in the next 100 days. I think he realizes you cant take a sledge hammer to everything. I think that he is starting to learn that washington moves at a different pace than he does and it never will move at the pace that he likes so ive actually seen some patience that hes look, its still not a lot. I still think that in many ways washington is educating President Trump more than sprump educating washington. Over time thats not a good place for the president to be, but i do think he is starting to understand that, hey, washington is a very process oriented town and you better understand how that works. Chuck todd, a lot for you to talk about on meet the press. Chuck has an exclusive interview with Vice President mike pence. Also this morning, a u. S. The city took over and used it as a place to take care of recovery workers. After a very grueling experience working the pit there, they needed the break. That basically fed the body but fed the spirit, the soul. Cant imagine what those people went through. Im extremely proud of that fact, as well. Thats what our church can do to lend a hand to that process. Reporter amy mccarthy kurta have been coming to the church since 1999 and livered ed live apartments above. I looked out the sight. Reporter the area was evacuated for months when the parishioners came back, they immediately got to work rebuilding the damaged chapel. Part of the wreckage, the interior was devastated, as it was coming back to live it showed that the community outside the chapel came to life. Reporter st. Josephs came back as more than a church. It was rededicated in 2005 as a memorial. Its walls are lined with patron saints symbolic of firefighters, police officers, rescue workers. To have that feeling. Sustained through them. And also we werent giving up. The message of 9 11 that we all embraced was, never forget, you wont be defeated. Reporter and yet while 9 11 couldnt defeat the church, rising rent in the increasingly posh neighborhood might. In 2014, the chapels annual rent spiked from 85,000 to 263,000. The archdiocese says thats unsustainable. The parish is sinking further and further into debt. Its just not a situation that can continue indefinitely. Reporter the families in the community dont want to see it go. How would you feel if st. Josephs had to close . I would feel disappointed because its such an amazing place. And so many people feel the same way. Ic thatting away this church takes away a nerve, i believe, to the city of what happened in events of 9 11. Its a pure and simple and quiet space that is a part of living history. And i dont know how you can take that away and not feel the loss. Now, the churches down there, dylan, like this one were so critical in those days after 9 11. People forget they were housing for the First Responders. They provided food and clothing and everything else. Theyve become historical sites. The parishioners are praying for a miracle. Whether a large donation. Im a member of the parish, so, i know how much it means to the community, and it would be really sad to see it go. Lets hope they get the help they need. Dit dylan, great story. Born and raised in miami as a teenager, demme started out as a film publicist before trying his hand at writing and directing movies himself. Sufficed to say, that experiment went well. In addition to movies like married to the mob, something wild and rachel getting married, demme directed one of the great documentaries ever made, stop making sense, a concert film about the talking heads.
