Swirling collection of thunderstorms off the coast of florida, but it wont be for long. And with the 4th on the way, the timing couldnt be worse. Forecasters are predicting a hurricane with 90 mile an hour winds at the core, just as the core is predicted to pass by the shore of the outer banks of north carolina, moving right on up the atlantic coastline, kicking up rain, high surf and winds as it goes right through vacation corridor for tens of millions of americans who are about to head to the coast line from florida to maine, if they arent there already. Its the first named storm of the 2014 hurricane season. Its where we begin tonight with Weather Channel meteorologist mike seidel on the beach in melbourne, florida. Mike, good evening. Reporter good evening, brian. Today the bahamas took a battering, gusty winds over 40 miles an hour, and heavy rain. Thats what were expecting here along the Florida East Coast beaches tonight and tomorrow. Here is the latest from are the National Hurricane center as of 5 00 eastern. It is a mid grade Tropical Storm winds of 50 miles an hour. Its strengthened this afternoon. Its drifting northwest at 2 miles an hour, paralleling the coast. Because it is not far offshore, Tropical Storm watches are up right now in the yellow shaded areas. The watches and warnings will be extended up the east coast tomorrow and thursday. As it feels the effects of the jet stream, arthur will start to accelerate, first north then northeast. And by thursday, expected to attain hurricane status off the carolinas. And by friday morning, the worst of the impacts, strong gusty winds surge moving across the outer banks, sweeping across the area. And then the consensus right now takes whats left of our hurricane out at that point out to sea. Were thinking for the Holiday Weekend only peripheral impacts in the northeast, that would be surge and dangerous surf. So listen to your lifeguards. Brian . Mike seidel, melbourne, florida. The other is dangerous weather in several other parts of the country, including severe storms that hit the midwest very hard. Nbcs katy tur has our report. Reporter a spectacle of light over chicago as lightning bolts hit the willis tower, the light show, high winds and heavy rain lasted for hours. Flooding chicago highways and causing sinkholes overnight. This morning, travelers were forced to abandon their cars in the hopes of making flights out of ohare airport. Theres absolutely no way into the airport. So here we go. Reporter the storm known, a rare weather event known as a derecho. Straight line winds with gusts up to 80 miles an hour rolled across five states, killing at least three people. We get thunderstorms, we dont ever get anything like this. Reporter in iowa, two teens were sucked into a storm drain after eight inches of rain fell in just a few hours. Late today authorities found the body of logan blake. His friend david bliss, who was trying to save him, went through a mile and a half of pipe before coming out near a local lake. It was pretty bad. The water was too powerful, and it was moving really fast. Reporter along the iowa illinois border, parts of the mississippi could reach their highest levels in six years. Overseas tonight, the response by israel was quick and powerful after three israeli teenagers were found dead yesterday in the west bank. Israel launched dozens of military strikes in apparent retaliation on what was a day of mourning for the three young men. Ayman mohyeldin is in telaviv for us tonight. Reporter tens of thousands of israelis turned out today for the three teenagers who were killed near the palestinian city of hebron. The bodies were discovered tuesday, nearly three weeks after the jewish settlers were kidnapped while hiking in the unoccupied west bank. Tonight israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is Holding Hamas responsible and is promising they will pay. The Islamic Militant group has praised the kidnappings, but denied responsibility for it. Overnight, israel demolished and ransacked the homes of palestinian families belonging to the suspects it alleges were behind the kidnapping, and detained about 400 individuals since the teens were kidnapped. In gaza, the Israeli Air Force carried out dozens of strikes on suspected targets belonging to hamas who, in turn, fired rockets into southern israel. Tonight, israels Prime Minister said they are prepared to widen operations in gaza. It has people here extremely worried that there may be more violence here on the horizon. Brian . More than 100 undocumented Migrant Children and their parents were flown from texas to Southern California today, in the latest chapter of what has become an overwhelming border crisis in this country. Nbcs Miguel Almaguer is back in murrieta, california tonight, not far from san diego. Miguel, good evening. Brian, good evening, at this hour, 140 undocumented immigrants from Central America have been diverted from this facility. They were supposed to be processed and released here, but many the buses they were on have been turned around, this was the scene earlier today at Lindbergh Field in san diego. One by one, many mothers carrying their babies were flanked by Border Patrol officers, as they boarded buses for the onehour drive to murrieta. Here they were greeted by angry protesters, furious they say, by what they call refugees being bussed into their small cities. They blocked streets, waved flags and squared off with immigration advocates as tempers flared. Police stood between buses and protesters as the vehicles turned around, headed back on a freeway toward san diego. This was expected to be the first of several waves of undocumented immigrants coming to this facility. Instead tonight they are at a facility in san ysidro. Brian . Still ahead on our broadcast tonight, new hope in fighting Food Allergies, especially peanut allergies, for so Many American children. And later, the realization among the crowd at wimbledon today, something was wrong with serena williams. Tonight, the official explanation for some bizarre behavior. At best they are aggravating, at worst they can be deadly for the estimated 15 million americans who suffer from Food Allergies, including about 6 million children and including the peanut allergies that have come out of nowhere in recent years. But now finally, some new treatments are showing promising results for those who wish they could eat but they cant. Our report from our chief medical editor, dr. Nancy snyderman. Reporter for most of her young life, severe Food Allergies kept 11yearold tessa grosso feeling different from other kids. I felt left out. Reporter her mom kim was terrified about potentially fatal reactions to dairy, wheat, egg, almonds and peanuts. I remember the first time she went to camp, i hired someone to shadow her, and then i went and hid in the bushes to make sure she was okay. Reporter two years ago, they joined a study at stanford university, designed to gradually build tessas tolerance to a combination of foods all at once. The team, led by dr. Kar kari nadeau, fed tessa tiny bits of protein from the foods she was allergic to. Gradually increasing the doses. Are you ready . Reporter they combined that with injections of a well known asthma drug. The result, she was desensitized to multiple allergens within six months. Much faster than previous studies using a similar approach. Even better, shes now able to eat many of the foods that once would have put her in the hospital. Its really exciting for me to say that for those people that stay in the study, they are having the same types of outcomes as tessa. How are things . Good. Reporter another promising treatment for Food Allergies is a patch to help kids like Spencer Beatty avoid severe reactions to peanuts. The goal of the patch would be to expose the skin to the food theyre allergic to in a way that is almost like a vaccination. Reporter the Study Results wont be released until october. But spencers parents david and elizabeth say its the hope of a future free of Food Allergies that keeps them participating in the research. Great if it helps him, but even better if this is the trend toward allergy treatment and we can help other kids and other families. Reporter theres no real cure for Food Allergies. But the hope is they can be managed so theyre not deadly. These treatments are not yet widely available. But things like the patch, as they await fda approval will keep you up to date. Brian. A brush fire churning through dry land, forcing evacuations and charring 2500 acres land. Good evening and thanks for joining us. Im jessica aguirre. And im raj mathai. It is massive and theres no stopping it. Our nbc chopper is on the scene. Can you get the scope and size of this fire. It started in the noon hour and is spreading fast. Its happening in the pope valley 20 miles east of calistoga. You can also see Lake Berryessa there. This is a rural area, but there are small communities throughout. They are surrounded by the dry brush fueling the fire, and they are on steep and rugged terrain. This has damaged at least five structures, forcing crews to evacuate more than 180 homes. At this hour, it continues to burn, but it is 30 contained. There are horse ranches in that area. Smoke can be seen. It is dark, ugly smoke. This is what it looks like from our san rafael camera.
