a lot hooping this final day of january. the new covid rule that we could be seeing in a matter of weeks and some revealing comments about jimmy g, from him and the guy who is likely to replace him. that's all just ahead. let's start with the milestone. today marks two years, think about this. two years to the day when we first learned of the first covid case here in the bay area. we also got to know santa clara county health officer dr. sara cody who quickly established herself as one of the most proactive health officers in the country. >> we knew so little. we knew so little. and i hope that we communicated effectively and truthfully what we knew and what we didn't know. >> dr. cody and another bay area health officers would later become the first in the country to issue the stay at home orders because of covid and they took a lot of heat from it from a lot of people. so what's in our future? covid cases are changing rapidly. they are now talking about shifting our strategy in the next couple weeks. we'll be talking with one of our covid experts moments from now. some other stories we're wooching this monday night. tonight for the first time, san francisco police showing body cam video from a deadly shooting. a police-involved shooting at sfo. before we play this chip of video, we want to warn you what you're about to hear and see may be disturbing. >> that was the moment there that nelson was shot by sfpd officers. the video has been edited by the police department. in a virtual town hall this afternoon, an sfpd commander revealed what investigators say led up to this gunfire inside the international terminal last thursday. police say, you see him there, that he was armed with two handguns and a knife. a negotiator got him to drop the knife and one gun but he was still holding the other handgun when officers fired less lethal rounds at him twice. police say he walked toward officers and that's when he was shot. he fell to the ground but things didn't end there. >> he reached across his body toward the handgun on his left side. he then raised his right arm toward the officers. some or all of the four officers involved discharged their firearms which can be heard on the body-worn camera videos. >> officers did give emergency aid to him but he was pro announced de at the airport. you see the spot shadow, those two air soft handguns. this was all at the airport and he died there at the airport. multiple investigations continue today. also tonight, a hit and run in san francisco's sunset district is international headlines. police are on the hunt for a driver who hit an uber, killing the passenger inside. that passenger is a well known member of the irish community in the city. right now, his friends are gathered near the crime scene. there in the sunset district. sergio quintana is there for with us the very latest. what do we know? >> reporter: barry mcgrath is the name of that man riding in the uber who died in this crash here saturday night at this corner. i can tell that you according to investigators, the audi suv that crashed into the vehicle that he was riding in was reported stolen in the city, about a couple weeks ago. right now, i want to show you a couple dozen friends of his who are pretty close to the crash scene. a few of them say they are still shocked this happen, saying they were at a team meeting with him last week. now, he was an active member of san francisco's hurling community. that's an irish sport similar to rugby. many of his teammates say they're shocked and a memorial at the crash site is a chance to grieve but also to celebrate what the 38-year-old was able to accomplish. there's a sizable collection of flowers that has been left here by people who got to know him since he moved here in 2015. he was very active in several organized sports in the bay area and with the tight-knit irish community here in san francisco. >> it's a very hard thing for anybody to go through, particularly hard when people are away from home. so yeah, we just want to pass on our condolences to them. >> police are still looking for the driver of that suv that smashed into mcgrath's uber, then left the scene on foot. he is described as a what it male. more than six feet tall. bald and about 45 years old or so. police are hoping someone may have images of that vehicle or information about the driver of that suv. they are hoping to make an arrest in this case pretty soon. reporting live in san francisco. nbc bay area news. >> and while we have you, i saw a muni bus go behind you. what is the intersection behind you and is it pretty busy? >> you know, it's interesting. that's one of the complaints some of the neighbors have voiced to us earlier in the afternoon. they say since there have been some changes in traffic patterns, since the pandemic, it has created some traffic issues at this intersection in particular because it is squeezing traffic off the great highway on to lincoln way here. one neighbor who talked with us earlier this afternoon said that there are some people who will take this intersection here, going into the avenue at about 40 miles per hour. they've been concerned about the safety for quite a while now. >> okay. reporting there at that crime scene in the sunset district. we home there are some developments in this case. thank you. also, this has turned into maes, hasn't it? for several reasons. a kick in the gut for the 49ers, the 49er fans and if you think about it, a reality check for governor newsom and mayor breed. you probably saw the photos by now. today governor newsom responding to his critics. here you go. we've been doing these stories for so long now and it still elicits such a strong reaction. magic johnson with the governor as well as mayor breed and l.a.'s mayor, eric garcetti. there is a photo there. none of them wearing masks. many people in the stadium, the fans, rams and 49ers, were not wearing masks and nor was anyone in the private suite. the governor said he only removed it briefly for the photo but here's another photo 14 the rams' fan cam. it appears to show a mask hanging off the governor's ear while he's in his seat. so what are the rules? according to sofi stadium, the website, fans must show proof of vaccination or recent covid test to get inside. once inside, we're used to these rules, right? you have to keep your mask on even in your seat unless you're actively eating or drinking per l.a.'s health order. here's what the governor said today when asked about the photos. >> given your history with this issue, should you have maybe reconsidered taking the mask off for the photo, the image? >> yeah. of course. i was trying to be gracious. i made a mis -- i took it off and i took it off for a brief second. >> is this much ado about nothing or emblematic of his leadership? he said he took off his mask when he was having a glass of water. this isn't the first time we've gone through this, facing criticism for not wearing the mask at the french laundry. people say it is a double standard. >> he took it off. emfor a brief second. the problem is that with this governor and a series of other incidents, it is hard to know whether it is a brief second or longer or what. and that's what gets people upset. >> and this touches a nerve with parent, especially with kids and masks in school. many point to photos and say it is time to give california children the choice to take off masks in campus. >> for them to do that and then act like it doesn't matter that kids have to wear masks all day and they've had to wear them eight hours a day for months and months is just absolutely insane. >> let's move this forward now. governor newsom said he's working a new covid endemic plan, not pandemic, endemic. there is no word what that will include. if it includes lifting mask mandates in schools. so what will they look like? let's bring in one of our experts over at ucsf. nice to have you back on the program. let's start with the governor. are you surprised with the reaction so far? >> i'm not surprised at all. i think we've all been up and down this roller coaster with masks, no masks, restrictions, i think people are just tired. and i think it is completely understandable why they might feel frustrated. >> doctor, i don't like the mask rules either for my kids in school but do i listen to what doctors advise, including you. when it will be safe? forget the politics. when do you think it will be safe to drop the mask mandates on campus? >> well, i think we're almost there. i think all. us want the same destination. we're rapidly approaching that. probably not exactly the right time yet. but by the time people agree on it, i would say two weeks might be a good destination point where we might be close to where we were around thanksgiving time. >> two weeks is valentine's day, as we head into february. what other rules can we relax with the endemic from a medical point of view? >> i think in terms of just masks indoors, i think that will probably be relaxed as well. i think that restrictions on sizes of indoor gatherings will be relaxed. we already see that. sofi stadium has allowed people with a negative test in addition to vaccines. if we look at the example of parts of europe like denmark, they went from very strict to very liberal including public transportation, where people aren't wearing masks this week, in fact, they are changing that. so i think all these things we can expect to change. but again, encouraging everyone to remain flexible because we'll probably have a break for a few months. i will hoping it will last a lot longer but we may have to be prepared for another round. hopefully that won't be for some time. >> your business is not to predict but are you optimistic about the next three to six months? >> i'm very mefk about the next three to six months. because we have a large field with natural immunity, boosted immunity, together which will, i think, keep us down for a while in terms of numbers of cases. our hospitals are pretty good right now. but again, everyone is watching ba.2. i don't think it will be responsible for another surge but may, you know, make it slower. in my heart of hearts, i don't think it will be much of an issue. at least the next few months. >> just to clarify. ba.2, that's the variant of omicron, correct? >> yes. the evil step sibling of omicron. >> always appreciate your time and your insights. we have more covid coverage ahead. it includes our covid faq. the link is at the top of the rage. it includes an explainer on the new less restrictive mask rules coming to san francisco, tomorrow those rules, and how to choose the next mask. up next, the wind is about to pick up and that could be a problem in next 48 hours. we've had a very dry january. will we be in trouble as we head into february? and yes, covid tests, security points and staying inside the bubble. we're getting an exclusive look at all the steps you have to take to get to the winter olympics in china. you're watching nbc bay area tonight. i didn't have health insurance, not because i didn't want it. i worried it was too expensive and i was having a hard time paying our other bills. but now for the first time in our lives, i can do both. covered california makes health insurance easier in every way with financial help for millions of us and free assistance to compare your options. covered california. this way to health insurance. enrollment ends january 31st. go to coveredca.com welcome back to nbc bay area news tonight. we're seeing a lot of this in the last several weeks. a beautiful sunset and another dry day with no rain in sight. we had such a good start to the rainy season. but all this month, hardly any rain. when february starts tomorrow, we might be dry until maybe valentine's day? on top of that, the wind is picking up. a couple weeks ago we saw this big fire near big sur. we usually don't see wildfires like this in january. let's bring in jeff. we had all that rain and then almost no rain in january. >> in big sur, somebody was doing a big burn. we shouldn't see that coming up. the dry, this goes down in the history books. we went from all that rainfall in october and november to this. for most area, the top ten driest on record. for san jose, the one spot where we will be the driest ever in january. we only had trace amounts. the last time it was this dry it was 2015 when we recorded 100th of an inch. >> does this put us two step back early in our drought? >> excellent question. at this point, we are still holding on to the gain because we had so much record setting rainfall. we were just three to 600% of normal. this is october 1st before we got the storms and you will see most of the california was in extreme to exceptional drought. we will advance this and fade it into the current. you can see the gains we made. the state is in severe to moderate drought. we're holding on tom. do i anticipate in the next couple weeks if we don't get rain, we will see us take some steps back. >> the wind could be problematic in the next couple days. >> yes. what we're looking at in that long range, it is the storm systems. you can see them developing here. they're just continuing to move off to the north. i do think at this point we're only looking at a 55% chance. we get a moderate system many here the end of february. >> that's still three to four weeks. >> i know. it is not what any of us want to hear. so with this wind coming in, the fire danger will be elevated. these areas in orange over the northeast and southeast in the mountain, 40 on 60 miles an hour. that's a lot of us. >> yeah. no burning. watch out for your neighbors if you see anything suspicious. don't hesitate to report it. we could see a fire pick up pretty fast. >> okay. this kind of snuck up on us. we're looking at the calendar, the ma'am, and all of a sudden we're talking about winter olympics. thursday, in fact. we're getting a behind the scenes look in beijing. our own janelle wang arrived in china over the weekend. she posted this, leaving the hotel quarantine. our producers and photographers there, all from nbc bay area, in two layers of quarantine. and just getting to china was a multistep process. one reporter documented his journey from california to beijing. >> in order to get here, there are a bunch of steps we must complete to set foot on chinese soil. china has what it calls a zero tolerance policy for covid-19. 14 days prior tower departure, members of the media have to start monitoring their hotel this app. 96 hours before our flight into beijing, we have to take a covid-19 test. that of course has to come out negative. the 72 hours before our last flight are crucial. we must take another covid-19 test and get had a is called a green health photo. when we boarded, we were greeted by very nice attendants. once in the air accident it was a very normal pandemic flight. face masks on at all times except when eating or drinking. upon landing, i noticed a group of people in hazmat suits waiting for us. flight attendants told us officials would come on board to check our at that. but then we were told to deplane first. the second we entered china, there is another requirement. we must wear approved face masks which include n-95 and kn-95 masks. after getting our olympic credentials activated, we were taken to baggage claim where we were then able to board the bus to our hotel. we are very limited to where we can be. only our hotel or official olympic venue and we can only get there in official olympic shuttles. we are not allowed to walk or take public transportation or cabs to those venues, and no, you can't go on outdoor runs. after we got to our hotel, we were instructed wait for our negative results to come back. at around noon that day, the results came in. great news. just got the email. our team is cleared with those negative covid tests from the airport which means now we get to go back to our section and finish the check-in process. >> it is a tough process just to get there and then essentially, a soft quarantine once they're there. that was fernando. you can watch our journey to the winter olympic special. download it and look for it unour winter olympics play list. up next, what's next for jimmy g and his likely replacement, trey lance? all right. how are you feeling? unless you win it all, it's usually a gut punch when the season ends. the 49ers and niners fans feeling that gut punch today. is this the end of the road for jimmy g? most likely. not just his fault though. plenty of blame to go around. bottom line, the rams made more plays yesterday. they're going for the super bowl. the final pass as a 49er, here it is. ill advised. it is this interception in the final minutes. here's jimmy g. >> that's it in a nut shell. we were 3-5 at one point. we just kept fighting. that's what good teams do. that's what tight brothers do. i have no regrets. >> this whole year, whether it is convenient, or media is asking questions, nothing but great to me. everything he's opportunity and how he's handling everything. he'll be one of my best friends my whole entire life. >> that's a class act. really good citizens there. we'll hear from coach shanahan tomorrow. that's it. what a wild ride for the 49ers. i think niner fans are pretty happy. so what now? not the niners, jeff. who will we root for? >> stay with cali. >> i assume so. we'll have the olympics and the super bowl all day, all night. in one day on nbc. >> that will be busy. we are tracking some wind. we talked about it earlier. across the mountains. we are looking at wind gusts from the northeast. 40 to 60 miles per hour. this warning starts at 3:00 and goes in the 9:00 a.m. on thursday. the fire danger will be with us the next two days. we'll start sunny, mostly clear. for the afternoon, lots of 60s through the bay area. and in the seven day forecast, no rainfall. we'll stay with 60s as we move through the next seven days. morning temperatures in the 30s to 40s. the 49ers, what a comeback. like two months ago, everybody was writing them off. >> yeah. a great season. that will do it for us at 7:00. for everybody here, thanks for joining us. enjoy your evening. rihanna, do you hope to have a baby soon? >> rihanna and asap rocky are having a baby and you'll love what she once told us about her parenthood plans. >> will you have the same rule for your own kids? they are going to the super bowl and only we have the wonderful ups and frightening downs of matthew and kelly stafford's journey to this moment. >> by two-year, we call it an anniversary, because my brain tumor -- >> the bigger the butt, the bigger the career. >> 13 surgeries to remove all that silicone. now kay michelle shares her story as a warning to others. >> you almost lost your
