If it is another thing silicone valley is known for it is building the future. Still there is plenty of history around us. The kind that comes with someone like al kuhn. A 78yearold face. This one man not just a witness to but a participant in the 20th centurys darkest hour and its greatest accomplishment. Many of my models look authentic ar al kuhn says its his hobby of model making, carefully piecing together miniature boats, planes, trucks and trains, that has kept his hands and his mind agile well in to his eighth decade of life. Which is of course good for al but good for the rest of us, as well. Because what a life its been. Al kuhn, you see, was born in germany in the 1930s. Hitler was in power. And the kuhns were jewish. A lot of people saw the writing on the wall more clearly than my family did because they lived in big cities. The night of broken glass was a turning point for them. The memories is as clear as if it happened now and it happened in 1938. Gosh, time flies. Als family was able to escape. We were literally the last jews to get out of town. Everybody who stayed never made it. They were all sent to concentration camps. Reporter but als brushes with history were not done. Reporter al was on the team responsible for the Rocket Propulsion for the lunar lander, the vehicle that got Neil Armstrong and buzz aldrin to the moon but more importantly for al got them off of it, as well. Im almost holding my breath for the moment when it would lift off. Reporter until our interview, al admits he never put together his special place in history. His connection to the high and the low. His message to the rest of us never forget either. The darkest day in the 20th century will and should be and must be preserved just as the greatest days. Reporter al actually has one more message for the rest of us and thats to reinvest in our Space Program and get americans excited about exploration the way they were in the 70s and 60s. I think that once you get out there and explore areas that you think you know that you havent been to you really dont understand whats out there. How this man got off the beaten track right outside of his front door and how he is showing all of us about the world we live in. Ask any new mom or dad about the stresses that come with the first year of babys life and get ready for a long conversation. For some, the stresses of parenthood start with simply feeding and clothing their babies. Some mothers need help with this. Thank goodness for them that lisa klein has a computer and a heart. The two combined in an unlikely way to form our next bay area proud. Spend just a few minutes wandering through the online bizarre that is craigslist and youll be amazed at the variety of what you can find. In fact, search long enough and you might end up finding a purpose in life. At least thats what lisa klein found eight years ago. I get goose bumps talking about it. Reporter in the days following hurricane katrina. Touched like so many of us were by the devastation she saw on the evening news, lisa searched for a way to help, searched craigslist new orleans. One posting in particular, from a Church Turned emergency shelter, caught her eye. Said we need absolutely everything. Blankets, sleeping bags, medicine, baby clothes. That was it. That was what i could do. Reporter so lisa, a new mother herself at the time, asked for doh nations from her friends. And i received 400 pounds of baby clothes in two day answer the next day i woke up and there was more baby clothes on my porch and the next day more baby clothes. From that single posting was born a Singular Mission to provide used baby clothing for children whose mothers are unable to provide it themselves. In a strange way i feel i was put on this earth to do this are use of baby clothes on a grand scale. I can not thank you enough for being here. Reporter on this day, 20 volunteers from a nearby aaa office have come to help lisa sort 500 pounds of donated clothes. Each box they fill contained enough clothing for a boy or girls first year of life. So many people need help. I could not do this on my own. I think that is one reason it is so successful is who doesnt want want to help a baby. They have created 8,000 boxes. The boxes are delivered to social workers across the ebay area who in turn give them to mothers in need they are women lisa never sees but sometimes hears from. My husband lost his job as a janitor. Reporter the letters these often very young women send letting lisa know what they were able to do with the money they didnt have to use for clothes. I cant imagine that. To know we are clothing these babies who were perhaps born in to a world they did not choose, i think that is why it has been so successful and people want to help.
