Reporter raj, the 57yearold fedex driver was in court this afternoon. Security footage at all three of the homes that had burglaries show the same images of the same fedex driver, a driver that has a criminal history. In one case it was a door that was ajar, and the others were unlocked. Reporter open and unlocked doors proving to be too much of a temptation for one fedex driver delivering packages in atherton and menlo park. On tuesday Menlo Park Police arrested 57yearold kevin baker, charging him with burglarizing two homes in atherton and another home in menlo park. All while on his rounds for fedex. Police say baker is a convicted felon with a history of theft. Whether he disclosed all that or not or what efforts they make to do a background is not something that we would be looking into. Reporter a fedex spokesperson told me today their company does contract out drivers for fedex ground. They gave me this statement all individuals providing services on behalf of fedex ground undergo background checks. Baker has prior arrests from 1981 and 1988, so its unclear how he got the job at fedex with a criminal history. Yeah, i think that is a little bit unusual. Reporter now, fedex told me today that they are looking into exactly how he got this job as a fedex driver with that criminal background. Reporter an ad in silicon matchmackers caught her eye, touting itself as a personal and local dating service. Even more important, the Success Stories she heard during orientation. They had linked up so many people, so many Success Stories. They showed me a few of them, people that have gotten married through the site. Reporter maria bought in. She paid nearly 8,000 up front for 16 months of match making. But frustration soon kicked in. Maria says it turned out the service wasnt personal or local. She worked with multiple matchmackers, she says, by phone from a sacramento office. She says the matches they made were terrible fits. Im not being picky. Same mistakes over and over again. Its like, are you listening to what im saying to you, have you looked at my profile . Reporter marias member is about to expire. She says her nearly eight grand fee to Silicon Valley matchmackers brought her four bad dates. Theyre just taking advantage. I feel like ive been taken advantage of. Reporter kim williams has a similar story. She signed up with east bay matchmackers. She bought into the promise of local service and available men. Kim signed a 3,000 contract for six months of local match making. Its now up. She says she also had four dates, set up over the phone by people more than 100 miles away. Ultimately what it is is, you know, very Little Service for a lot of money. I feel like ive been totally taken advantage of. Taken to the cleaners. Reporter kim and maria went to different bay area offices but they were dealing with the same company. It operates at least four bay area match making companies. Plus more than a dozen around the country. All from its headquarters in oklahoma. Its Vice President of operations flew here to address consumers concerns. One of the complaints you get over and over again is that they were promised some different schedule of match making than what they literally just initially stated. Reporter hes right. Singles signed this contract that promises a match making membership for a period of time. It says the company does not guarantee a specific number of introductions, does not guarantee any specific outcome, and cannot make a satisfaction guarantee. I deal with professional, intelligent, articulate people. Theyre smart enough to understand the agreement that theyre entering into. Reporter more than ten clients like maria and kim came to us with complaints. Carol says that doesnt alarm him. He says more than 6,000 bay area singles have signed up over the past five years. And happy clients send letters every week. We get invitations to weddings, wedding videos, cards, thank yous. Reporter when we asked to meet one of those couples, the company introduced us to frank. Frank told us he paid 4100 for a match making that worked. A matchmaker in sacramento paired him with the woman who is his fiance. Were engaged, were happy, were looking for a house to move in. Living the dream. Reporter thats the dream kim, maria and others feel they were sold with testimonials like this on the matchmakers websites and pictures of happy couples like these. But this testimonial from blake, thanking Silicon Valley matchmacke matchmackers, also appears on east bay matchmackers and even one in nevada. A quick search of those happy couple pictures reveals theyre stock photos. Carell acknowledges the photos are not clients. He says theres a privacy concern. People arent real keen about putting their pictures up and stating, hey, we used a match making service. Reporter carell insists all testimonials are real including the testimonies salespeople share with potential clients in these local offices where they sign the contract. I think youre buying something sight unseen. And youre paying a lot of money for this. Reporter Santa Clara University law professor ana hun reviewed the contract and called it one sided. She says if hundreds of matchmackers feel they were lured in with false promises, they could file a class action lawsuit. If people are induced into signing a contract with fraudulent promises, they do have a claim. They can basically claim that they were asked to sign something under false pretences, that they were promised things. Reporter but singles like kim, maria and others we talked to want something else. I think it should be shut down. Everyone who reached out to us wanted refunds. The company said no. But it did extend their membership. A settlement with maria might be in the works. The company, by the way, is now running another dating service in the bay area called executive matchmackeker matchmakers. Professor hun says negotiate a pay schedule so you can cut loose without losing anything if you dont like the service.
