From a troublesome design to outdated parts, now the big issue is high ridership. Nbc bay area Investigative Reporter looks at how the station was put in as an afterthought. It has now become the systems biggest choke point. Reporter youre looking at embarcadero station, one of the most crowded in b. A. R. T. s 100mile system. Every work day Transit Commission spokesman rand rentshcler says its literally not safe to put another train in there and unload it. People at the b. A. R. T. Stations know how tight it is, how hard it is to get out of the station. This is true in an operational way for b. A. R. T. Because they can only run so many trains to the embarcadero station. Reporter when b. A. R. T. Was built more than 40 years ago the embarcadero station was a smaller lastminute addition. Today its escalators which are prone to breaking down because they were built for indoor use, strain to handle the morning crush of 28,000 passengers into the city. Longtime b. A. R. T. Board member says there are no easy solutions. You running trains in faster, you bring more people into the station. Can they get up and exit the station. That vertical circulation, we call it, so the staircases, elevators, escalators in terms of getting folks down to the platform and getting them back up off of the platform. Reporter b. A. R. T. Hopes putting in an elevator here will ease the burden. They want to put doors in along the platform edge allowing more passengers on the platform while preventing them from falling on to the tracks. Operations manager says overcrowding is just one problem. Another is that the design does not allow trains to be diverted once they get into the b. A. R. T. Transbay two. Theres a saying when b. A. R. T. Goes down, it goes down big. The example of a tenminute delay at embarcadero at the rush hour will cause 20 to 30 late trains. Reporter system glitches, crowding, police emergencies. All cause b. A. R. T. s reliability to suffer. Once as high as 94 , it now stands at just 88 . The system operates on edge right now. Lets just be honest about it. Between trying to run a train every 2 1 2 minutes and the number of people that are packed on to those trains, theres just no margin for error. Reporter b. A. R. T. Hopes bringing in new threedoor trains like the ones rolled out today as well as an electrical overhaul and a reengineered control system will improve service. All of that being said, our goal is to sort of reverse the downward trend and start climbing back up again closer to where we were four or five years ago. But the fundamentals, you know, a sea change in terms of how we operate would require huge investments. Reporter those investments, a second transbay two, a second San Francisco line and a way past the transbay bottleneck would take years and cost billions. Retired b. A. R. T. Spokesman mike healy says the systems 1 billion price tag back in 1972 was still an incredible value. It was probably the best bargain the bay area ever made. If you tried to replace b. A. R. T. Today, it would be more like 40 million. B. A. R. T. s a great system and yes, it has problems but every great system has problems. Reporter the system has expanded far beyond the dreams of its planners, he says, now carrying millions of passengers. Millions and millions of passenger miles. And where would they have been otherwise . Theyd be on the road somewhere. Reporter b. A. R. T. Has indeed become indispensable for the bay area. Once revolutionary, it remains one of a kind. With design limitations and extra costs built in forever. Reporting for bay area news. If you would like to see other parts of our series visit nbcbayarea. Com.
