Worked greatly. Reporter they installed them in the 90s and apparently never upgraded them. It all came to light when a rider was shot and killed on a train and bart failed to release images from inside the car. It seems like they were just waiting for something to happen in order to be caught, when why not have them work all along . Reporter bart says they hear the concerns and will work to install all the cameras in the cars in the coming weeks. If it happens, its great and will help to solve crimes. Reporter but many riders feel bart is simply doing damage control and are angry that the damage control has taken so long to add the trains to the train cars. They have been lying so long, its supposed to be a Transit System . No. Reporter now, bart insists that their system is safe but they also want riders to feel safe again. They say they will begin to install the working cameras on board all their trains in the next few weeks. Reporting live in the east bay, im jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. Riders may take comfort from that. More details, bart says crime is actually down on some of their trains. They say they saw just over 3,000 crimes. The year before the Police Arrested 3300, there were 330 arrests in 2015 compared to 119 in 2014. Bart carries more than 400,000 passengers every weekday. And were following some developing news on the peninsula, the coast guard has pulled an unconscious man from the water after he and a woman were swept out to sea. Our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is tracking the dangerous surf. But well start with Marianne Favro in pacifica, and marianne, we understand you just spoke to the man who helped with the rescue. Reporter i did, raj, i spoke with Trevor Griffith who was on the beach this afternoon when he heard a woman call for help from the ocean. He later jumped in to save her. She said she was wading in the water when a wave knocked her down and pulled her into the ocean. Her husband went to help her and he, too, was swept out. Trevor griffith and another man went in to save the woman who was being pulled under by rip tides. Kind of got ahold of her, and we both tumbled in some shore break for at least you know, a minute or Something Like that. Got sucked back out. Tumbled again. And then when we got pushed up on the shore i kind of wedged myself between her and and the ocean to keep her there. Reporter her husband was swept much farther south. A coast guard helicopter lowered a rescue swimmer into the water and lifted the man out carrying him in a basket to the beach where rescue crews responded. They then took him by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Rescue crews are not saying whether the man was alive when they pulled him from the water. And witnesses tell us he was in the ocean for at least 20 minutes. Reporting live in pacifica. Marianne favro, nbc bay area news. Well, we certainly hope them the best, thank you, marianne. Lets talk to chief meteorologist jeff ranieri who has been tracking the dangerous surf. Right now it is not about the waves being extremely high but its the fact we have strong rip currents but waves will increase over the next couple of days. The reason why is we have plenty of storms in the pacific. While we have not had plenty of rain here, all the storms are heading up to canada and alaska making the seas turbulent. So as we see the buoys off the shore, the reads could go as high as nine tomorrow. So if you decide to go into the water which is not advised you do not want to turn your back to the water again, because it can become very dangerous and fast as we just heard in the earlier story. Now, in terms of the waves and the forecast it would get nearly double and triple in size as we head to the immediate coastline, 15 to 18 feet on thursday may even hit close to 20 feet by friday. And that includes the mavericks and Pillar Point Harbor which is affected to start on friday. Well have more details coming up in ten minutes on the forecast. And you just heard jeff talk about the daredevil surveyors, called the super bowl of surfing, they received their heads up this morning, that is how long they have to get to Half Moon Bay for the big surfing event, as jeff said likely to go until friday. The last time the maverick surf contest took place was january 2014. Last year the swells were just not big enough to hold the contest. You can track the surf and the contest on our app store and click on the weather tab. A group of chp officers jammed into a San Francisco courtroom today, there to watch noel corpuz face a judge. He is accused of slashing a kidn chp officer. Mark matthews is there, what is the status of the injured officer . Reporter well, raj, andre sorrenka is doing better. Noel corpuz was chained at the ankles and wrists, no cameras were allowed, but they were allowed a week ago when he was arrested. The chp officers say they responded to a report of someone walking on the freeway on ramp. When noel corpuz described sorrenko. Corpuz, who was described as a native of hawaii, was arrested and charged with attempted murder. Today, chp officers showed up in force to witnesses arraignment. You know, they call this the hall of justice and were here to see justice served. Reporter no cameras were allowed back in court, the public defender said there were identification issues with potential eyewitnesss. Afterward, he described a little what was in the witness report. There was a report of taser used, something that looked like a firearm to was being pointed at the person. And that is when we believe the stabbing occurred. Reporter corpuz has prior drug offenses but no history of violent crime. Officer andre sorrenko was knifed in the throat. And at the time the chp called the wound lifethreatening. He is out of the hospital now and expected to return to work. And the San Francisco Police Department much criticized for the shooting of mario woods, there is this comment. And i cant say how professional and how great the sfp was in helping us out in our time of need. Reporter noel corpuz is being held on 500,000 bail. The Attorney Says it is excessive. The hearing is set on february 24th. Reporting from the hall of justice, mark matthews, nbc bay area news. Mark, thank you, now in the south bay happening at this hour the city of santa clara at a crossroads. Who will take over as mayor . Jamie matthews unexpectedly resigned yesterday and still had two years left in office. The Council Members will vote to determine who will take his place, the council will make this a special election on the november ballot. And taxpayers in the south bay will be asked to solve a lot of problems with their wallets. Talking about tax measures totaling billions of dollars. Nbcs robert honda has more on how the locals will react to so many new taxes. Reporter well, that is right, you know, governor jerry brown rescued the area with the local tax, but they say they need billions and it all depends on the taxpayers needs. Reporter the project needs more money to reach downtown of the that next phase is one of a 6 billion sales tax measure being developed by the valley transportation agency, they oversee all local transportation projects including roads and bikes. But the vta is concerned all the positive reviews it got for handling super bowl crowds may make voters think it does not need more resources when it does. The reports we get from local sales tax that can be levered down the road. It is proving successful when it comes to bart phase one, for example. Reporter today, they began to perform recommendations for the share of the vta money, if and when the vta passes. But the city council was supposed to consider its own Quarter Sales tax measure today for a june ballot, to address other needs such as public safety. But the issue was put off to conduct more voter polls because the mayor is worried about tax fatigue. It is important for me that we are very honest with our voters about what exactly they will get. If theyre going to pay more they better get more. Reporter the Silicon Valley Taxpayers Association says the agency should be worried especially when two thirds voter approval is needed. I liken it to an analogy. You go to a restaurant, you get bad service and bad food. You say the next time you go there, you want them to increase the price and get better food and pricing. Reporter now the vta pulled back a similar measure two years ago because polls indicated voters were against it. Both the vta and san jose will begin to poll voters again soon to see if the voters will have a better reception this time around. Live in san jose, robert honda, nbc bay area news. I want to see where the money is going. Reporter weve done it as a pay as you go. The funds that were generated will come back into the lanes to pay for operations and maintenance. Reporter here at Nasas Ames Research Center in Mountain View, the focus is getting to mars. Nasa even released a 360degree view of the martian surface, and talked about how a return trip to the moon may actually help things along. Is a moon a possible place to go to in order to learn how to get to mars . So as far as a journey to mars it becomes a proving ground area and an area that is still relatively close to the earth. Reporter it will take a lot of green to get to the red planet with a lot of the work happening here in Silicon Valley. Another note from todays nasa briefing. The new astronaut class was announced, made up of four women and four men, the first time in history that number has been equal. Reporting live, scott budman. Would you like to go to mars .
