Five kids in the house. Theres ten kids in the house total. Were not allowed to go in our house. We are there with our sick mom. They wouldnt let my sister in. It was reduck lous. Reporter syed farouk and his wife were killed on this street. Where it all started, at the Inland Regional Center. I would never think anything would happen like that here. Then i look out my window and theres cops lining the streets, s. W. A. T. Teams. They have rifles in their hands. Definitely super, super scary. Wakes you up to everything thats going on in the world. Reporter a source within atf says it was unsophisticated, but they did follow simple instructions of bomb making. Moving our safety perimeter north. Reporter 12 pipe bombs were found at the home in redlands. The atf source adds with the hundreds of rounds stockpiled, they were ready for a miniwar. That agent really descriptive of what he was telling us. We should say that there were thousands of rounds of ammunition found inside the home in redlands. Similar to president obama, earlier today talking about this massacre, with us now here in San Bernardino is california governor jerry brown. He just finish eed addressing t media. My concern is to make sure that everything that can be done is being done and Going Forward that the state of california provides the resources and works very closely with both local officials and our federal counterparts to make sure that we can protect the people of california. Reporter that is a big concern for so many people. We talk about now the suspect here syed farook and his wife tashfeen malik. He was born in the united states. Grew up in illinois. His wife came to the u. S. Last year with a pakistani passport and a k1 visa. Authorities tell nbc news this is a new development that farook appeared to have been radicalized. He had been in touch with people in the l. A. Area who have expressed jihadistoriented views. Intelligence sources tell us farook appeared to be communicating with people overseas who are persons of interest to u. S. Authorities. Its a lot unraveling here. We talk about the suspects here. Syed and i had wife. More importantly now are the victims. There are so many friends and family members here at this vigil to honor those victims. Among them, among the 14 theres a long list here. Among the 14 victims, michael wetzel. He is a father of six. If you go online right now, theres a fundraiser launched for his wife and his six children. Its raised more than 100,000. He was a supervising Environmental Health specialist for San Bernardino county. We would like to raise as much money as we possibly can at this point. We know that its not going to take away the pain or suffering that the family is feeling. Obviously, it will hopefully alleviate some of the stress financially that shes bound to feel. She was a stay at home mom. Reporter so difficult. We had so much experience in dealing with the massacres that now we get personal stories about the victims. Another one, daniel kaufman, he ran a coffee shop there. His boyfriend received initial reports yesterday that he had survived the attack. But he learned today that daniel did not survive. Daniel kaufman among the 14 victims that died in this massacre in San Bernardino. The list goes on about all the people that did pass away here. Now, among we have multiple reports here. On scene we have reporters here. Peggy bunker is with us. Da lets start here in the ballpark here at the vigil. This has been a difficult day. What have you tracked down . Reporter very difficult as the stadium starts to fill up. We are learning more about the man and woman behind this massacre. Syed farook comes from a t turbulent pass. Syed farook was born in illinois. He worked for the San BernardinoPublic Health department. The community, including his brotherinlaw, remember him as a peaceful and devout man. I have no idea why would he do that . Why would he do Something Like this . I have absolutely no idea. Im in shock myself. Reporter before farook became associated with this deadly shooting, he had to endure a turbulent past. His mother filed for divorce in 2006. In those documents, she detailed the violent past where her children had to protect her from her husband. Today, the fbi gave the public insight on farook and his wife. We know there was international travel. They came into the u. S. , both he and his she was not his wife at the time but she is now. They both came into the u. S. In july of 2014. They have since had a baby together. Reporter as the fbi comb through a car outside farooks condo today, people in the community talked about the man and his wedding reception and not the monster the world sees him as today. I still remember it and many people in the Community Remember that night. I feel sad and sorry for what has happened. Reporter farook and his wife leave behind a 6monthold daughter. Back to you. Were on San Bernardino avenue. Its a major thoroughfare here in town. They cannot believe they may have worked with or knew syed farook. They cant understand why he would leave such a murderous m rampage on his coworkers. They live on San Bernardino avenue where the suspects lives came to an end. The black car. Reporter this woman works as a local restaurant and remembers syed farook, a health inspector, coming in to inspect the restaurants. We had a health inspection. I believe he was our health inspector. Reporter many of his county coworkers say they remain stunned at his rampage because they remember him as a quiet, nice person. She does, too. I remember his face. He was talking to another manager. I said hello. He seemed friendly. He seemed nice. He seemed normal. Reporter this woman lives five houses from where the Police Shootout took place. After hearing about the shooting, she agreed to pick up her roommate who was also on lockdown at her job. She works at amazon. She didnt want to be there. She was freaking out. I was like, i gotta come get you. Reporter little did they know their street would become the least safe place to be. Hit the floor. I was panicking. My roommate was crying. I was shaking. Reporter they shot cell phone video of police and cars racing by, chasing the black suv that syed and his wife were driving. We were terrified. My daughter couldnt sleep. She cried all night. Its scary. Reporter for those that live in this quiet neighborhood, it doesnt make sense. Its senseless. Senseless crime for no reason. Reporter tonight, that suv is in the exact same spot where it was stopped yesterday during that shootout with police. Thats when 21 officers descended on the suspects who were killed inside and outside of the suv. We are watching fbi and Police Continue their investigation. Still an active scene. Back to you. President obama ordered flags across the nations capitol lowered in honor of the victims of the mass shooting. The proclamation calls for the flags to remain lowered through monday. Since we have been here for more than 24 hours now, the town has pretty scarce. But tonight theres a sense of warmth here. Lets show you inside whats happening, inside this Minor League Baseball stadium. More than 1,000, maybe 2,000 people are gathering right now just for prayer, just for reflection and really to be around the community that they grew up in and live in here after this massacre. We have more news, more questions after new video surfaces showing San Francisco police opening fire on a suspect and killing him. This is a followup to a story we brought you last night. The reaction from the police chief who is defending his officers actions. Reporter thats right. Theres a vigil tonight. Many people in the community frustrated and upset. They think this shooting could have been avoided if police had acted differently. Police say they tried many different options first. In the bay view neighborhood, there are flowers, candles and a growing sense of frustration. You could have had one officer who had a gun drawn if that needed to be drown and other officers could have used things like night sticks. Reporter San Francisco police say the 26yearold was suspected in a recent stabbing and had what appeared to be a six to eightinch knife. Video posted to social media shows how it escalated as officers moved closer. The police chief says they tried a number of tactics. They used at least five rounds of what we call less lethal, the beanbag guns, at least four of those rounds where the larger impact. You can see them in the video. He doubles over one time. Thats from the striking of one of the beanbags. Theyre very powerful. Yet he would not drop the knife. Reporter he looks like he takes a step. An officer moves toward his path. Shots ring out. Other videos show a reverse angle. I thought it was shocking. Reporter records show he has prior convictions. This public defender says the past is not the issue. The key is the danger posed at the time. Theres no indication he is lunging at the officers or trying to hurt or kill anyone. So why are the officers then taking their guns out and shooting him . Reporter the police chief says he would like to see more video of what led up to the confrontation in the first place. Were told that five officers involved in the shooting are now on leave. Traffic though, still pretty bad. Earlier today, the rain fell heavy at times. This is what it looked like in emeryville. Embrumbrellas and windshield wi came in handy. Interstate 80, highway 50 up above 4,000 feet, covered in snow. Thats likely to continue for the next three to four hours. Very treacherous, chains are required. Through tomorrow morning, we expect spotty showers to continue. Nothing too heavy but the roads will be wet. Temperatures starting off in the 40s. My kids were there. My wife was there. The first time they got to see dad do anything. They ask me about my job. I dont say much about it. They heard everyone else calling their dad a hero. I think once they heard that, their fear turned into pride. Reporter a spokesman for southwest said the airline does not track how often the employees are assaulted.
