He says a change in mood could show up five to ten years before the more recognizable symptoms, like a tremor. Hes not suggesting that parkinsons is what led to williams apparent suicide. A lot of people get depressed when they get diagnosed but ive never seen somebody commit suicide because of it. Reporter because it was an illness he struggled with in the past. A possibility in this case. Williams often spoke pub electrically about his decadelong struggle with depression. We always knew he was an incredible trooper. They are being forced to work mandatory overtime because of low staffing and some say its taking a toll that could impact Public Safety. The Police Department is slowly opening up this substation. There were 900 dispatcher applicants this goaround but today only three graduated. I present to you Public Safety dispatcher sarah johnson. [ applause ] reporter it was a big day for the new dispatchers. Robert pardine. Reporter the graduates are a welcome sight for veteran dispatchers struggling to keep things running with a dwindling staff. Probably the worst weve ever seen it. We have a lot of overtime to work. Reporter mandatory overtime that just kicked up again at the beginning of august. We are asking dispatchers to work 36 hours of overtime a month. Its a struggle and its hard to do that for 13 hours a day and much less knowing that youve got to go home and come back and do it again. We dont think its an ideal situation to be understaffed. Reporter the entire Communications Department is understaffed by 21 . The Dispatchers Union says its 30 for them. Dispatchers say three new graduates will help, but not much. Are you satisfied that its only three in. Wed like to have more. We had 900 people that were interested but not everyone is qualified. We have very high standards. Reporter they will do their best to send officers to a 911 call as fast as possible but low staffing is causing delays. The mayor and the Police Department say there are lots of opening for dispatchers. They are hiring. The starting salary, 53,000 a year. Were live in south san jose, damian trujillo, ncbc news. After our investigation, commissioners were getting paid for business trips. Joining us now is jenna. Raj, from weak internal controls to missing files, the audit calls for more oversight of travel. The audit confirmed what we reported. But some commissioners were overpaid and some trips, like one to las vegas, has no explanation. We spent months going through every trip taken by commissioners since 2010. The audit found what we did. Commissioners attending conferences with meals provided but picking up a daily stipend, per diem thats supposed to cover meals at the same time. The report shows commissioners doubledipped for about half of all meals. The audit also looked into several examples of trips from our report calling the amount of money an error, undetermined, and no record exists in the file. Now, we also want to know the audit found some instances of commissioners being underpaid, like tips for taxi rides. Bottom line, they will be fixing their travel vouchers. The travel policy was improved and procedures after our investigation aired. Those who live nearby are still buzzing about the troubling incident. It happened at the blossom hill road area and Playa Del Rey close to highway 85. Scott budman is at the scene with more details. Scott . Reporter good evening, peggy. Officers were called near the area on a report of someone with a gun was threatening family members. This usually quiet neighborhood was shut down for hours after San Jose Police officers got a troubling call. At approximately 10 36 a. M. , officers responded to a call about a female who was in possession of an uzi assault style weapon who was threatening to kill family members. Reporter a ups delivery man left his truck to warn nearby business people. He said there was a woman Walking Around with a shotgun and i thought he might have been trying to make a joke but he was very serious and that was all we did, was we brought all of the patients in and locked the door. Reporter ultimately the woman confronted officers. At some point the female exited the residence and at that point shots were fired. I heard it and i came from the that area and an ambulance was sitting in lucky. So as soon as the gunshot happened, the ambulance came down blossom hill because the street was blocked off. They came in and she was in the street. They picked her up and they took her. Reporter as for the gun, officers still have for the confirmed if the woman ever had one. Our chopper did see something sitting in the street outside of the house that looks more like a power drill. And after the shooting, the woman was rushed to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead. No other injuries reported in the incident. The city usually sees five or less in a year but this morning fremont saw its third Home Invasion in the last two weeks. The latest happened at a home on monticello terrace. The two armed men broke in before dawn and ordered them to hand over valuables. They told the victims to wait basically, to hide before doing anything. The victims are very shaken up. They are very scared. This is a very traumatic incident. Now, the other incidents, a man broke into a home and waited for his victims, a mother and daughter. Now, that man was arrested. And then two armed men bound a woman with duct tape while her baby granddaughter was in the next room. Those men are still on the loose. Well, get ready to pay more on your pg e bill. Regulators approved a rate height. They are allowing pg e to collect more from its customers to help improve the companys natural gas pipeline and also the electrical grid system. Pg e says the increase will amount to about 7. 50 per month and it breaks down to about 3 more for electricity and 4. 50 for gas starting in october. This is what the puc has determined is necessary to operate and maintain and upgrade our natural gas and electric infrastructure. Again and again what we hear from pg and ecthem is just give money. Reporter thats how the girl got her fathers attention. Once awake, he panicked. Dad trying going downstairs to escape but the heat and smoke made it impossible. My baby held my hand and said father, come back. We turned. Reporter the soontobe fifth grader had a plan of her own remembering Fire Prevention tips they learned at school, she shut the door and crawled her way to the secondstory window instructing her dad to break his way through. I saw the window open so i told my dad to lift the thing off. I think shes a hero. I think she did a great job. She really was the clear mind in this emergency where she was able to convince her dad that they need to go out of the window and not make a run for the front door. Firefighters told me that had they actually gone downstairs, they probably wouldnt have made it. One breath of that gas and super heat would have burned their lungs.
