Today an update from the World Health Organization organization regarding the monkeypox. The w. H. O. Has seen 35,000 cases in 92 countries so far. Its resulted in a total of 12 deaths. Case numbers are up 20 from last week. Most of the cases are in europe and the americas, largely among men who have sex with menful World Health Leaders stress the importance of the vaccine in fighting this outbreak, but also express concerns about supply and access. We remain concerned that equitable access to vaccines will be repeated, and that the poorest will continue to be left behind. There have been breakthroughs in cases of monkeypox among vaccinated people, but they say this is to be expected and added that its important to allow time for an immune response after getting the vaccine. In addition to the vaccine, Health Leader says people can lower risk in other ways like reducing their number of sexual partners. Well, in terms of the spread of monkeypox here in the bay area, Santa Clara County is now officially using a controversial new vaccination protocol. It will stretch the current vaccine supply by giving each person a smaller dose. Here is nbc bay areas christie smith. Reporter Santa Clara Countys change follows an fda announcement green lighting a plan that effectively turns each regular dose of Monkeypox Vaccine into five vaccinations. The goal, to reach as many people as possible who need it. In Santa Clara County, every dose of the Monkeypox Vaccine is about to go a little farther, because each recipient is about to get a smaller amount. This has been studied previously for the Monkeypox Vaccine, and its found to be just as effective. Reporter dr. Jennifer tong is chief associate medical officer for Santa Clara Valley medical center. And says it takes one vaccination and divides it into five smaller doses will help address the gap between supply and demand. It also changes how the vaccine must be delivered. Intradermally instead of subcutaneously. It means giving the dose between the layers of the skin rather than being underneath the skin. Reporter some critics have said the intradermal shots are more complicate and easier to get wrong. But dr. Tong is not concerned. This is a standard technique taught to those who administer vaccines. Most are given by nurses and this is something that nurses learn during their training. It most often is used for tb skin tests. Reporter it makes sense particularly when there is vaccine scarcity. And the benefit being that only 1 5 of the dose is needed for the intradermal injection. So it allows a single vial of vaccine which was previous i will only enough for one patient, for that vial to be used for five patients and multiply our limited inventory five fold. Reporter at countyoperated sites, they started new protocol yesterday, giving over 100 of the new injections. Because of limited inventory, the county continues to require appointments for vaccinations. Christie smith, nbc bay area news. Christie, thank you. Meanwhile, the cdc is getting a makeover. But it was out there i guess. We had a few isolated thunderstorms. We had the humidity. We had the heat. Even some of that smoke from fires off to the north drifting in. So a lot of different layers. All in all definitely a strange day out here across the bay area. Lets sbriet that microclimate forecast. And we are going to start it off with a look at whats been happening. And you see in the satellite radar picture what were dealing with is not only the monsoonal moisture moving in from the Desert Southwest right up here, most of it going over the sierra. But we have this small system that is now moving up the coastline. And that also continued to contribute to our thunderstorm chance for today. Now this will be moving off to the north tonight. So i do see any kind of thunderstorm chances continuing to decrease here through the bay area. Totals not very high, but trace amounts to about. 05. We did not have any fires break out from the couple of lightning strikes we saw near the Santa Cruz Mountains earlier this morning. We do have a few isolated showers up into santa rosa. Otherwise, that is just about it right now. Anything breaks out on the radar, of course we are going to bring that to you tonight. But really, all in all i think the biggest chance is going to be over the sierra. You see it active here south of tahoe with lightning strikes. And that will continue to move off towards the north. If youre headed to tahoe this evening, definitely be very careful because of some thunderstorms that could continue overnight. As we roll it into the next couple of hours, this is the other thing weve been tracking. It was hot inland today. We did still have some mid and upper 90s. 94 in walnut creek. But its nowhere near that 105, 106 we had yesterday. Numbers starting to drop. Still going to be a warm night, though. Feeling a little sticky from some of that subtropical air. Kind of strange the next couple hours. Eventually down to some 70s by 9 00, 10 00 and 11 00. A lot of layers happening. Lets take you into tomorrows forecast. That area of High Pressure thats brought some thunderstorms. Also the humidity. Okay. See you later, goodbye. Its going to move off towards the south and also the east tomorrow. Thats going help set us up in a little more typical bay area day with some fog at the coastline. The air is going to be a little dryer for us. You can see tomorrow morning we have some fog and drizzle at the coast. By afternoon we get our sunshine returning. Temperatures are going to start off a lot more comfortable. A mix of 50s and 60s to start. A 56 here in the trivalley. Over to San Francisco, 59. Daytime highs tomorrow not nearly as hot. 85 here in san jose. 8in milpitas. Through the east bay, 93 in concord. 77 hayward. Peninsula, 79 in redwood city. San francisco 50s and 60s. A and the north bay 91 here in napa. The sevenday forecast shows in San Francisco we have 60s as we roll through the next several days with morning fog, afternoon sunshine. And here we go. Saturday and sunday, upper 80s and low 90s. Thats going to be some good weather to get some in and out or whatever you got going on. I know. I got to catch up. Im hungry. I had a cheeseburger animal style. Sounds like a wonderful one. Have i nothing to say to that. Thats the dinner menu right there. All right. Up next, tomato troubles. The new problem popping up from ar drought, we have a followup on that monkey that dialed 911, irritating some police dispatchers. We learned today the monkeys phone privileges have been suspended.
