What do you tell them to keep them pumped up and not too pumped up . Thats the key. This is the time when it is important as crew chief you know the players. You know what gets them motivated. There are some players on the pit wall. Go down and give them pat on the back and some you want to let be. They are ready for their time in the spot line to shine. And cars are starting to roll. We heard earlier critical situation as far as saving fuel for 48. They need to get back around. An they need to have pit road open by the time they get to turn four and come ton pit road. I want it sto see pit road o. If we can get it open now, restart with seven or eight to go. 47. A. J. Allmendinger. He is instructed by nascar to pass the pace car. Right by the pace car. A. J. Allmendinger has a free pass for the pace car. Get him caught up and to pit road. We talk about nascar and they take it rough of getting in a green flag laps. They want as much racing for fans as possible. This is outside normal procedure but allmendinger, go past the pace car, get to pit road. Can you see how allmendinger, when you are the pass around car, look, you will respect the safety workers and respect safety cars. You make sure you go slow around them. Pit road will be open. With a. J. Allmendinger going around the track. Talk about how the temperatures dropped and no more sun on the racetrack. This is a very sensitive racetrack to weather. Now start with that, too, steve when you come down pit road and what adjustments do you make . All eyes on pit road. Who stays out. Who comes in. Dave . Oh, a lot of them coming in, i think they overheard us talking. You see Brad Keselowski, bayne and johnson all coming in. They were told, get back out there and do the best can you in the words of trevor bayne and the words of the 6 car. It aint over until its over. They will all pit. Keselowski going for right sides. Same for bayne and same for johnson. Johnson was almost out of fuel. This was a god send for him to have the red flag. Sonoco fuel to make it to the end. Two cars staying on the racetrack. Race off pit road is to be on the inside lane behind the front row. 2 will be able to get out in front of the 48. Bayne, valeaiant effort. Came out, maybe second. Im not sure if Jimmie Johnson wasnt happy that bayne mo beat him off pit row. That moves him from inside two to inside three. We have to see where kasey kahne was in there. Kasey kahne stayed on the racetrack. We had two cars stay on the track. Kasey kahne and ryan newman. They are your two leaders. Thats first and thats second. So keselowski coming off pit road, first, thats going to put him starting directly behind kasey kahne on the bottom lane and we heard Jimmie Johnson say you want the bottom lane. And he will have four fresh tires. If youre the race leader though, would you choose the outsideline because you get to dictate the restart . No. You dont want outside and clear . Im choosing inside every time at indianapolis. It didnt work out for i understand. It didnt work out. But it is your job to get a jump leaned. I do not want to give the guy on the inside at indy. I will say this, it changes the game, if you are on the outside, can you suck that guy around and take grip out. Thats risky call though. Post race coverage and kissing of the bricks live from indy on nbcsn followed by victory lap. Other issue, that you have to assess, if youre kasey kahne your team is telling you, okay, ryan newman, he could have rolled 133. He does not have tires. He should not be able to pull up next to you going into one. Even if he is, you should have enough grip to drive away. In that situation with ryan newman with pitting on lap 133, you pit on lap 149, a hundred percent take the bottom. Kasey kahne and keith rodham had no idea when they called their car to pit row at lap 139 they did not know this was the moment that changed the entire r race. The caution comes out. That pit decision has given kasey kahne the lead. 102 races since kasey kahne has gone to victory lane. Keith rodham, crew chief, has never gone to victory lane as crew chief. You talk about moments, they had no idea that would be a special one to win brickyard 400. 2014, atlanta, last time kasey kahne won a cup series race. Fresh tires starting opt front row. 31 on ryan newman. Brickyard 400 winner. Starting with older tires but right behind them. Brad keselowski who hasnt loved his car today. Remember at the red flag. Bayne got position with that unique fuel strategy. What a strong full row. Seventime champion on the inside. Another champion on the outside with matt kenseth. A lot of heat behind the front two rows. I have been in the position where people think you will wayne championship then you get on a winless drought. My heart rate is up for the position that kasey kahne is in. This is an opportunity to shut all those people up. Go win this race. It will be a sevenlap shootout. Kasey kahne on the inside. Ryan newman on the outside. Newman won the brickyard 400 before. Kasey kahne has not. Coming into the geico restart zone. Green flag back in the air. Can he clear it by turn one . Brad keselowski. All over the back bumper of kasey kahne as they go through one. Down the short chute. Into two. Kasey kahne. Now twocar length lead over Brad Keselowski. Fighting for position behind them. But the top two separating themselves early on this restart. Here comes the 48 battling back though in the third. Kasey kahne has 17 cup wins. He knows how to win these races. He hasnt won in a long time. Resort back in your brain to where you were in these races. Oh into the wall. 42 of kyle larson into the wall and caution comes out. Right in the middle of the front stretch. Flames from under the hood. See him having to get that hose unhook bred he can get out. Hose blows air into the helmet. Today g had to get that unhooked first. If you dont get that out, you wont get out of the race car. Looks like he is limping just a little bit. 12th position is where kyle larson was running before he hit the wall. Now we will have to look. If someone got into the back of him or if he was trying to take a position. See fluid running out. Under fr under the car. Ty dill yop, big block. But kyle larson couldnt have gone any lower. Put kyle larson in position where he would lift or wreck. Little contact by 21 blaney as well. Coming up the racetrack. So a lot of clean up that still needs to be done on the track. Parts to the 42 car. Much like what you saw with 7 will, rick. 42 makes contact multiple times with the wall. Descent contact. An huge impact. This one here though actually might have been one of the bigger hits and you see the red sparks. Finally catches some sort of fluid on fire up under the hood. Whether oirl fuel after knocking a line loose. He ran him so low. As soon as we see the dust, it is like the 42 came around. I dont know if he lost traction or what that low in the front stretch. I think two cars running that hard and maybe just a little bit of contact between the two. Blocking for every position. Ty really low trying to,000 wall to his advantage. Almost as a pick. All of the debris being cleaned up on the racetrack. Still under yellow flag condition. Cars rolling around the track. And five laps remaining. This restart. Is going to be add difficult or more difficult for the 5 kasey kahne. Now Brad Keselowski to his outside. Jimmie johnson right behind him on the inside line. Little bit of contact right before then. Larson moving left. The car moved back to the right. But youre right, steve, i think that this restart is going to be more difficult. Remember, that 31 of ryan newman, he had on older tires. Thats huge advantage of kasey kahne. He certainly you could beat ryan newman if you wanted to with the old tires. But now it is much more difficult. Not the caution you wanted to see. They got out to six or seven car length lead. Trying to clean up fluid on the track. Keith rodham, so much conversation throughout the garage, media, fan base, about ca kasey kahne and his seat at motor sports. Who will take 88. I will call them rumors because ive seen no official statement from anyone about kasey kahnes situation. I dont know his contract situation. But as those rumors floated, i have not heard in public or private, keith rodham say anything about his driving. He has been a hundred percent supportive about what he and his driver are doing about getting back to victory lane. Finding the speed that racy cane spo kasey kahne showed 102 races guy. It is easy to point fingers. The fact that kasey kahne and rodham could do not, never blaming one another, may pay off today. You have such high skpeb expectations. Remember, everyone here is a winner. To get here, you have to win. If you have to stay together. If not, it only gets worse. August of 2014 atlanta last win. That was a huge win to get him into the playoffs that day. Accident that took place earlier. Prior to, this one involving kyle larson, involving kurt busch and kelly caught up with him. Kurt busch released from the care center here in the garage area. Kurt, nowhere to go. How is it to navigate those situations . I saw 14 going left, 77 going right, trying to follow 1 in through there with be i had no idea the 14 would come shooting back across the track. Just wrong place at the wrong time. I mean, i feel bad. You know, im glad we won daytona, because we have done nothing in points this year. We struggled. Running 15th there. Might have cycled back around to tenth. But we have to run better. Run better for Monster Energy, haas, ford. Good track with pocono. But im on a firstname basis with the doctors in there. Thats not good. Take a look at play off standings. As theyre running. Kasey kahne up there in 12th now. He is leading this race. He could definitely shake things up. This would definitely shake things up. You remember, you win youre in the playoffs. This is as if he wins the race. That moves clint bowyer out. Because you know, if you win, youre in the playoffs and rest are fueled by people that didnt win and points. This win by kasey kahne could put him in playoffs and move somebody out. Kelly . Kyle larson out of the infield care center. Hes been released down into that inside wall, what happened . I was inside, and he just kept running me down, running me down, running me down. To the end, im not going to lift. And he just ran me down far enough where i had nowhere to go. I clipped his left rear and it got me loose and came back across the track. A ton of blocking. Dirty blocking. I saw other people blocking aggressively. Pretty annoying. But oh, well. I dont know. I was there the whole time on that one. That was pretty bad. But this is indy. Thank you. Two to go. Kahne on the inside. Keselowski on the outside. Back to restart zone. Look at Jimmie Johnsons car. 48 will. Smoke rolling out from under the car. Still up to speed. Brad keselowski on the restart. The 5 wiggles. Up the racetrack he goes but stays straight. Side by side again through two. Keselowski strong jimmie said it was blowing up with be rick. Keselowski makes the pass. In front of the 5 but not completely clear. Here comes the 48 to the inside. 48 still smoking. Three wide for the lead as they enter turn three. Brad keselowski. Around goes the 48. 48 blows up and into the wall it goes. Caution comes out again. You want to know what winning a race means . It means three drivers are willing to drive three wide into turn three at indianapolis at over 200 miles an hour. Where there is barely two, one and half lanes for racing. Frustration. From Jimmie Johnson. You saw him throw the window net down. Keselowski running on the outside of kasey kahne. Making the outlied line work through turn two. Almost had the 5 completely cleared when they went down the back stretch and then the 48. Jimmie johnson, we can see there was a problem with the 48. Smoke rolling out from underneath it. But he was still able to surge ahead and get three wide. On the inside one into turn three. What a series of events. From the time the green flag dropped. Here kasey kahne under keselowski. Really loose. Able to maintain it. And good spot keselowski does everything he is supposed to do. Close to 5. Look at loose he kbets, inside the 2. Jimmie johnson with huge momentum with smoke coming out of the black of the car like its blowing up. Now kasey kahne aint lifting. I can promise you, been a long time. He will drive it into there. Every one of these guys wants to win. Gets loose. Around he goes. Dont tell me these drivers dont want to win this race. A car supposedly blowing up, and he was the one that made the move to had inside to try to take the lead going into three. Thats dedication. Heart, desire. Wanting a brickyard 400 trophy for keselowski, Jimmie Johnson, kasey kahne, hey, im back. How about trevor bayne . Able to avoid all that. Stay in third. Clipped the grass as he goes through turn three. Look at this. Man. Light contact between 5 and 2 of Brad Keselowski. Assuming it doesnt cut a tire. That should affect them on restart. I dont know what bayne was thinking going down the back stretch but we will have to find out after the race. Im sure he didnt know which one of the three he would follow into turn three. You know whats amazing about that . They knew they werent coming out. They knew, they knew they were going in there three wide. They were pretty sure they would be the one that came out but you have to know the three wide at indy, somebodys not coming out of that corner. And 48 is towed back into the garage. Kelly . We have scent 5 of kasey kahne barely able to hold off the 2 of Brad Keselowski. Team discussing strategy over this overtime restart. This cant be into turn one. Beat him on the one on the bottom we will be gone. But he was able to hang on you there. So whatever you think. We just need one more time here. It started with him asking, what do you think about taking the top this time . One other note before the last restart, i heard kasey say he was cramping up all over. I dont have a clock on how long this race has gone on but these guys have been behind the wheel several hours today. Thats interesting. We know kasey kahne is an unbelievable athlete. Does triathlons. Unbelievable athlete. Works out, trains all the time. But that conversation, steve, about which lane to take, became more complicated right there. That set of circumstances, those incidences, look at the side of the 2 car how beat up it is. Keselowski gets on the back side of me, he can pull me around. Difficult decision here for kasey kahne. Lets listen in to the 2 radio talking about that damage. You did what you had to do there. Good job. Check my left side damage. Check my left side. I think youre okay. Dont see anything smoking when you rolled by. So the 2 has damage. We heard kasey kahne ask about restart. Jeff . I just dont think you can give Brad Keselowski the bottom. I think brad did a remarkable job on the outside. But i think you have to take the bottom and force brad to the top but kasey kahne disagrees. He will start on the outside. I have to tell you, with what i just saw, i dont know that kasey kahne ahad a choice. I think kasey kahne goes into three, three wide and is lucky enough to come out of it. That means being on the bottom wont work again. Try to be the guy on the outside that pulls the 2 car around. Difficult decision. I dont know if it is the right or wrong decision. Well remember my career is on top of the pit box. Ive never driven these cars into turn one. Ive had talented drivers give me their opinion. I think starting on the outside he has got to accelerate out of the zone first. Thats what it is all about. You have to be you beat him to turn one, your life is way easier. In overtime. Sponsored by capital one bank. There is the line. Stretch between two and three. If they are able to get to overtime line after the initial green, that comes out, if they are able to get to overtime line before a caution comes out, then the race will finish under that condition. They will not try another restart. If they dont get to the overtime line and caution comes out, they will try another restart. As we talk about front row, lets not forget about second row. Bayne, hamlin, we saw 48 will get three wide off second row and third row has mcdowell and newman. Mcdowell with one career top five. He is running in fifth position. What an incredible track it would be to get in your second top five. Or possibly a win. Kahne chas choshas chosen the outsideline. Keselowski on the inside. It will be two laps to go. Kasey kahne, determining restart. Once he entered restart zone. He gets a shot, green flag back in the air. Caution comes out. Wrecking behind him. Erik almirola. Ryan blaney. Look at all the damage to the 15. Smoke coming out of the 11. Gaulding involved in the 55. This wreck is because youre coming, green white checker, and Everybody Knows if you push the guy in front of you, its going to make that line go faster. And this is pushing gone wrong. We saw the car just behind kasey kahne. He was pushing kasey kahne before they even started. He pushed kasey so hard he pushed him side ways and hurt his restart. Ryan blaney disappointed. Climbs out. The 21. Trevor bayne also out of the car. Trover bayne third. Just behind Brad Keselowski. 3 of Austin Dillon also in there. Look here. Look at kahne. Keselowskis hand out the window. He is asking. Asking for help. Push me. Give me a push. Thats what this is all about. And it helps Brad Keselowski. He gets ahead of trevor bayne, i believe. This push from the 6 car is better than the push from the 11. 11 pushing kahne knocked the rear tires off the ground and push for 6. Pushed the 2 car ahead. Michael mcdowell and 9 r5 pushing 6 and pushed him right around. I think the heard of this race just switched. I think Brad Keselowski is going to be the leader of this race. Again just everybodys pushing. Long straight aways. Everybody wants to be the first line into turn one. It heard it reference but looks like kasey kahne chooses to wait until the end of the restart zone. He can do that. Fire the race any time and start that zone but problem when you wait, is everyones trying to anticipate so they roll up on you, roll up on you. Here you see the zone. Looks to me like the 5 chooses not to go. Here as you get close to the zone the 5 waits. Look at the gap behind the 95. And behind the 20. Thats what all these people are trying to do. Trying to time when to go and when to make that push happen all those timing happening right went up with this bunched up group. Thats what it is. Dooen hamlin accelerates like the 5 is at the start of the zone. You see how Much Movement there is left to right and finally 6 just gets pushed out of line. So now basically the leader will be decided from a loop line. Last
