unite in the face of terror. >> we need to cry. we need to be angry. we need to scream. we need to comfort each other. >> reporter: it is important to note orlando police yesterday asked everybody to hold off on having large gatherings and vigil it is just so they could focus on the investigation. there's extremely large police presence here tonight and there's still more people arriving downtown. we're told in about a half an hour they're going to be lighting these candles in honor of all the victims. i'm michelle roberts, nbc bay area news. >> almost night fall where she is. 8:00 in orlando. there are new elements to this tragedy. we now have video that gives us just a glimpse inside that nightclub as the terror unfolded. you could hear the gunfire there. this video was released today. a woman who was inside the club recorded it. she was one of the 49 people killed by the gunman before he, too, was killed in a shootout with police. 53 more people are recovering this evening from their injuries. at least five of them remain in critical condition. >> a dancer, a theme park worker, an accountant. tonight, we're learning more about those who lost their lives from the people who knew and loved them. i know you spoke to a bay area woman whose ex-partner was actually the bouncer at pulse. what a devastating thing for her to hear. >> reporter: i did, an emotional interview. this growing memorial. we're at 18th and casho. the sign says rest in peace orlando. i had a chance to speak with the san francisco resident who says she had a close friend who passed away in the shootings and she wants to make sure her friend is never forgotten. she sent a simple text message to her ex-girlfriend on saturday night. she kind know it would be the last. >> i said, miss you. she wrote me back and her last words were i miss you too. >> reporter: kimberly k.j. morris was one of the victims. shelton says the the two them dated in boston back in 2014. eventually moving together to hawaii. they parted ways when shelton moved to san francisco for school and k.j. moved to orlando to be with family. k.j. just started working at pulse as a bouncer two weeks ago. >> i know that in her last moments it was to help people. she's never been a coward. she'd never run away from anything. she would do anything she could to help people. i know that's exactly what she did that night. >> reporter: she case k.j. was also her best friend. k.j.'s life cut short at the age of 37 and now her best friend wants to make sure her spirit lives on. >> i want people to know she's a wonderful person. a great spirit. always smiling. bringing joy to everyone around her. >> reporter: simply put, a life taken away too soon. shelton says she plans to fly out to orlando to help out with the throughout europe and asha. members of thailand's lgbt community honored the victims. hours after south korea south korea's gay pride par ride, participants assembled with flowers and candles. what you're looking at now in our own backyard, apple ceo tim cook opened the world wide developers conference in san francisco this morning with a moment of silence. hundreds of uc berkeley students gathered at spro plaza for a lunchtime vigil. they shared their reflections on the mass shooting with an emphasis on healing. grief counters were made available to students and staff. the story continues in san jose. healing and prevention. how can we keep our communities safe. tonight a rally at city hall. let's bring in nbc bay area's marianne favro from city hall with more. >> reporter: about 1,000 people are expected at 6:00 tonight. they will be mourning the victims from the orlando shooting but they will also be uniting to talk about ways to keep this community safe. as the pride flag was lowered to half-staff in san jose, the napes of the victims of the orlando shooting pierced the silence. today, about 200 gathered to mourn those killed in the massacre. >> it's just very, very hard for me to know that a lot of our brothers and sisters back in orlando who were involved in this terrible tragedy. >> reporter: santa clara county's first openly gay supervisor ken jagr organized the gathering. >> all of us are proud of the advancements we've made in the lgbt community over last year or so and then a tragedy like this one reminds us of how far we have to go. >> this is our moment to pull together. this is our moment to take a stand. >> reporter: a stand that includes heightened security. >> we're definitely going to be looking into how we can provide additional security to some of the gay bars in the area. we work very, very closely -- >> reporter: but some question whether it will be enough to ensure the lgbtq community feels safe. >> you kind of feel like you're still alone and, you know, we have to protect ourselves. >> reporter: at 8:30 tonight, there will be a candlelight vigil here at city hall. reporting live in san jose, mary an infavro, nbc bay area news. even before the shooting, a lawsuit was filed to stop san francisco's upcoming pride celebration and a hearing on that injunction is set for thursday. it was filed by lawyers for two men who say they were injured by gunshots after the 2013 parade. the suit claims it's impossible to guarantee safety. leaders of pride have dismissed the lawsuit as an intimidation tactic. the supervisor is taking steps to improve security. he tweeted the event will honor the pulse nightclub victims. coming up, more on how the orlando massacre is adding new fuel to the fight over gun control proposals spotlight. lawmakerses in sacramento poised to vote on a host of bills including one that could ban the range of semiautomatic rifles similar to the one used in the orlando massacre. in san francisco where members of the state legislature met to urge passage of these bills. mark. >> reporter: those packages put together after the shooting in san bernardino and now the orlando shooting focused more attention on the legislation inlewding one called the bullet button ban. for decades california's had a rule that any assault rifle must include a second step for removing the ammo magazine. the idea was to make it more difficult to reload. but on almost every one, manufacturers have installed a button. press the button and the empty magazine popped out and a new one can be popped in. effectively negating california's attempt to slow down high-ammo weapons. this assemblyman says he tried it himself. >> i was able to reload in seconds and i got no training at all. >> reporter: in the hands of someone familiar with the gun, the reload can take a second or two. >> do you listen to anybody who was there and they say it was bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang of course it was. he had an automatic weapon. >> reporter: at today's news conference, they said the magazine should not be so easy to remove. the owner of the store says the proposed legislation doesn't address the real problem. >> the folks who are doing the tragic acts don't feel constricted by the law. they won't pay any attention to what's going on from a legal standpoint. they will find a way and they will find a way to do things that they're doing. >> reporter: chris jacobs told me if the law passes the first thing that will happen is gun sales will jump up as people try to beat the law going into effect. and the second thing he says manufacturers will find a work-around as they did the last time. the public safety committees in both the senate and assembly due to take up the passage of the bill fund me page specifically for the shooting. this is where it sets itself apart. either penny raised will be distridi distributed to the victims and their families. that page has received c chris. hours after this massacre, people in orlando started lining up to give blood. it was a powerful scene over the weekend. almost as quickly though came outrage over the rules that restrict gay men from donating. the restrictions are meant to prevent the spread of hiv. but critics say the rules are outdated and discriminatory. bay area representative barbara lee is among lawmakers calling for change. the fda does point out that other people at high risk of hiv or other blood born diseases are also excluded from donating. let's bring things back to the bay area. it is monday morning and it is a little cooler than we've seen. >> certainly very enjoyable after some hotter weather on saturday and temperatures are going to drop a few more degrees over the next couple of day. we're looking at the possibility of rainfall. the 24 hour temperature change is showing that substantial drop down 8 degrees in san francisco, 10 degrees cooler in live more and 6 degrees cooler in san jose. again, super enjoyable. south bay at 75 and sunny skies. east bay 71. san francisco, 65. as we head through tomorrow morning's forecast, we do anticipate some clouds. temperatures in the 50s. also watch for fog returning to the insurance the peninsula and san francisco as well. tomorrow, temperatures going down a few more degrees. this will put san jose at 73 and also sunny skies. big differences here from pacifica, 60 degrees, over to palo alto, 72. san francisco, any kind of business meeting, take a jacket. it will be typical cool weather with temperatures in the 60s and areas of patchy fog. for the north bay, east bay and also for the trivalley, 70s all around. right near average here across the bay area. this leaves napa at 73 degrees. oakland at 70. for the trivalley, 71 in pleasant pleasanton, also 73 in livermore. the main reason we're seeing temperatures drop from some 90s we had on saturday is this area of low pressure and we're going to see it linger for at least the next three days. it does have some heavier rainfall with it. it's going to be headed to the forth. now there's an increasing possibility to get some showers from this. that's what i want to head to next. the time line on when we could get some wet weather. by wednesday, cloud cover increases throughout the bay. it looks like thursday will bring the best chance any scattered showers from middleton all the way down to san jose. we have a chance here across the bay area as we head mainly into thursday. the next question that always comes up, how much rainfall could we get? trace amounts to about 300ths of an inch wednesday evening, also into thursday. we'll monitor it closely because of course we could see this go u and increase the way things are trending right now. as we look ahead at the weekend forecast. another chance coming our way. with some hotter temperatures. check it out by this upcoming sunday. 90 degrees in the south bay, san francisco 71 and 89 in the north bay. busy
