Students on the lawn checking their emails at uc berkeley learned today that the popular astronomy professor, one of the worlds leading scientists in his field resigned amidst allegations of Sexual Harassment. Im shocked to see someone who is so well known would engage in such activities. The viens chancellor said the investigation said he violated Sexual Harassment policy at the school. The investigation began following complaints in 2014 from his female students who said he groped and even tried to kiss them. He apologized on a statement on his faculty page last week saying, quote, while i do not agree with each complaint that was made, it was clear my behavior was unwelcomed by some women. I take full responsibility and hold myself completely accountable. The university decided not to fire him, coming to an agreement he would be fired if he did it again. They cited campus policy as a challenge to firing him, stating, quote, discipline of a faculty member would include an additional facultyled investigation and it would be a lengthy and uncertain one. They said the facultyled process would be subject to a threeyear statute of limitations. The fact he wasnt fired is not sitting well with some students. I dont think they went far enough, and it makes me frown upon this university. The university hopes to make changes to the firing process for similar snenlts in the future. But today the a long running lawsuit has ended with a huge payout, but today, the families who won that award say theres no real celebration here. The case stems from a tragic and bizarre crash that killed three people on a foggy highway in Madera County outside of fresno almost three years ago. The third truck hit the bales, crashing head on into the accord. They were awarded about 2 million from two trucking companies. More importantly, provided answers and enough closure to move on.
